Re: Equivalent of Exchange 5.5 "routing" in Exchange 2000

2001-08-29 Thread Tom . H . Burke

Well I;m coming from the other direction - I know a bit about E2k but nothing
about Exch 5.5.

I think the reason is that because smtp is a native transport protocol for E2k,
it can do smtp as part of its normal routing.

Subject: Equivalent of Exchange 5.5 "routing" in Exchange 2000

Hi all,
In exchange 5.5, on the properties page of my Internet Mail Service
connector, there is a routing tab. This is where I told exchange to
accept messages from vjungle.com and route it to . I also had
another entry here: smtp.vjungle.com that routed to vjungle.com. Where
is this equivalent setting in exchange 2000, or is there one? I have
looked at smtp virtual server, smtp protocols and the actual stmp
connector and don't see it.

Thank You,

Danny

Re: Question with Exchange and AD Setup

2001-08-29 Thread Tom . H . Burke

An E2k organisation has exactly the same boundaries as your AD Forest. Put
simply (possibly even simplistically), the E2k org uses the Global catalogue,
and there is just one of them in an AD Forest, and all user objects in domains
within that forest can access it. So, if the 'child domains' are in the same
forest as your other domains, then they will see all the users (and vice versa).
This is true even if the new domains aren't in the same tree; ie, if your forest
includes domains 'acme.com' and 'sales.acme.com' and you later add a new domain
'roadrunner.org' *to the same forest*, all the users in the three domains will
use the same Global catalogue. If you put 'roadrunner.org' into a different
forest, however, then is uses a different global catalogue (one is created
automatically when you create the forest) and its users won't be able to see the
users in acme.com.

There are metadirectory products that would, in fact, allow visibility between
GCs in different forests, but that's complicated.

Subject: Question with Exchange and AD Setup

Hey Guys & Gals,

Quick question, in AD if we create Child Domains will the E2K
servers we setup have all our users corporate wide or just the users in that
Child Domain. Is there any performance advantage to using Child Domains for
E2K? The only connection to the internet is at corporate headquarters so
the Child Domains will have to use that T1 to send emails out. Is this a
sensible option or should we look at making OUs for our satellite sites with
DCs and E2K backup servers. Please let me know.

Thanks

The server that generated the error is our Main server which has the IMC

This is one of a few errors logged..

E2K Routing

2001-08-29 Thread Clayton Doige
Title: Message

This may be long winded, so I will
apologise off the bat. Here goes.

Our mail is
hosted by someone else at the moment, but we need to move that to our control
in the next few days. All our existing mailboxes are on serverX, and have
recreated these boxes on serverY which is sitting waiting for me to make the
change (delayed for various reasons not important here). Until I can make the
change our current users will use the existing serverX for email. But, we just
registered a new domain name, and set the MX records to point to our server. Of
course no one can access any emails here unless their Outlook is configured to do
so, which it aint. In the mean time Marketing has told people to go ahead and give
clients the new domain name for sending email. Cute.

To further muddy
the waters: if I try and send an email to serverX from serverY (both behind the
firewall) it does not go through, which tells me I need to configure my mail server
to forward mail for given domains to their mail server's internal IP. How
do you do this. In 5.5, it was all in the IMC, but I can't
seem to spot similar in the SMTP connector.

Your wealth of knowledge
in much appreciated (in advance!) J

Clayton

RE: Blackberry and Virus'

2001-08-29 Thread Jim Holmgren

Interesting question. I believe Blackberry's convert everything to plain
text. You can load applications onto them, but you need to have it
connected to your desktop to do so. Because of this, I don't think they
would be susceptible to email worms.
I don't believe they handle attachments, however I also recently read that
in a future version of the software they will be able to receive and read
MS-Office attachments.

I can just see it now -
User: "I need more space on my Blackberry, its full"
Me: "Delete something. Maybe some of those MP3s or MPEGs?"
User: "No. I just need more space, why can't you just order me a new one
with 8GB of memory?"
Me: "OK, Give me your credit card number."

Start a Telnet session by using the following command:

If this works, you receive the following response from the IMC:

Begin communication by typing the following command:

HELO test.company.com
You receive the following response:

250 OK

Type the following command to tell the IMC who the message is from:

You receive the following response:

Type the following command to tell the IMC who the message is to (Do *!NOT!* use a valid Microsoft Exchange recipient's SMTP address).

RCPT TO:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
You *!might*! receive the following response:

RE: SMTP Servers

2001-08-29 Thread Paul Armstrong

Is the IIS Smtp Svc just for SMTP, I don't think it supports mailboxes
cause then it would be a POP3\SMTP Server. I have never used the SMTP
service and never looked into its workings but I don't think it could be
used. If it can be, can someone point me to some good information on its
usage and configuration?

Lets see the error
I could be the recipient mail system.
You may also want to advise your user that many mail systems will reject
these messages and many users just don't want files that big.

On a side note, how many slides are in this presentation. Chances are
the user is putting something like 300DPI images in them and they could
be greatly reduced with a little care and manipulation.

It seems to me like you are being rejected by the system you are sending
mail to. Talk to thier admin and see what you can do, or create a CD and
snail mail it.

One of my users wants to send out attachments that are 20 MGB or more.
These are PowerPoint files that he wants to send to clients. We are
running Exchange server 5.5 in NT 4.0 behind a Raptor firewall. When
attempting to send out this large a file, a reply comes back from the
system administrator to the effect that it is beyond the 5MGB limit.
How do I change this limitation?

I don't know if you do.
If the guy was able to pass a 20MB attachment though your IMS, I would
imagine not.
You can set the size to allow through the IMS properties (sorry I cant
be more specific, it is slipping my mind right now).

Trouble sending to one domain

2001-08-29 Thread Larry Penrod

I am unable to send to a paticular domain: larkin-grp.com

Messages just sit in the queue and eventually time out.

I went to http://www.zmailer.org/mxverify.html and it appears happy with
their mail server.

When I telnet into their server (216.61.124.81 on port 25), it does some
strange things. I try to enter EHLO beap.com or HELO beap.com and I get
a 250 OK before I finish typing. Then everything I type after that is
Command not recognized.

If you try that do you get the same thing?

How do I go about troubleshooting this?

Larry

Command not recognized.

If you try that do you get the same thing?

How do I go about troubleshooting this?

All:
I need some of the new OWA features offered by exchange 2000. We are
currently running exchange 5.5 on an NT box. If I install exchange 2000
OWA on another server running win2000, can I access the exchange 5.5
server? Has any one done this? Did you have any problems or suggestions

access Exchange 2000 mailboxes though (but not what you want). Sorry.

I could be the recipient mail system.
You may also want to advise your user that many mail systems will reject
these messages and many users just don't want files that big.

On a side note, how many slides are in this presentation. Chances are
the user is putting something like 300DPI images in them and they could

I wouldn't. Getting started on Sendmail is more of a career choice than a
configuration exercise. There's a reason why the O'Reilly book on it is 700
pages long.

Michele has the right answer - this it the moment to call in your friendly local
Linux consultancy, who will not only solve your immediate problem but will also
be happy to give your Linus box a health check and even provide Linux support
(for a fee, of course). The issue you're currently facing is an example of why
you need this.

This is in no way a criticism, btw - you are an Exchange admin, not a Linux

RE: I'm concerned with this (Answer part 2)

2001-08-29 Thread Gary Jackson

If you are running a newer version of sendmail, I believe that relaying
is denied as the default. If you are using an older version of
sendmail...maybe you can upgrade to the current version or upgrade your
version of Linux. If the Linux box is relaying then someone changed the
default settings and I would look for a sendmail.cw or check sendmail.cf to
see what domains ( sounds like all ) that sendmail will relay for.

2001-08-29 Thread Michael David

You are very correct. I have been avoiding messing (learning) with this
box (only Linux I have) since the local fee based Linux consultant
installed it. Luckily I have never had trouble with it. I was bored
today so I started looking through the NDRs and noticed all the
potts@. records. Thank you for the help and advice. BTW anyone
else seeing the potts@?

I wouldn't. Getting started on Sendmail is more of a career choice than
a
configuration exercise. There's a reason why the O'Reilly book on it is
700
pages long.

Michele has the right answer - this it the moment to call in your
friendly local
Linux consultancy, who will not only solve your immediate problem but
will also
be happy to give your Linus box a health check and even provide Linux
support
(for a fee, of course). The issue you're currently facing is an example
of why
you need this.

This is in no way a criticism, btw - you are an Exchange admin, not a
Linux
admin.

We use a backup
tape.  Restore to recovery server.  Review as
needed.

Exmerge can export to pst files.  This could be scheduled for weekly
for example.  An alternate means of backup for important
mailboxes.

RE: SFWR: Adjusting male size

2001-08-29 Thread Lefkovics, William

I like it when the recipient SMTP handler returns the maximum male size
limit in the NDR, like the one below. Not all of them do.

That way you can assess if your male package is the right size for the
recipient to take delivery. Without that information, one might try sending
and resending until the male fits.

I like it when the recipient SMTP handler returns the maximum male size
limit in the NDR, like the one below. Not all of them do.

That way you can assess if your male package is the right size for the
recipient to take delivery. Without that information, one might try sending
and resending until the male fits.

How
do I change this limitation?

I agree with Bill on this one..
Hey, what about OpenBSD using smtp/sendmail? It's free, the most unhackable non-MS OS(due to it's constant updates)
and is easily configured(as UNIX goes). SMTP is fairly simple(sorry for the pun)

RE: SFWR: Adjusting mail size

2001-08-29 Thread Jeff Schuckert

We have this same issue with our marketing department. They have a need to
transfer large files (+40mb) Been through the zipping, chopping &
compressing routine - it's a royal pain and usually creates more confusion
than anything. What I ended up doing is setting up a temporary FTP site.
When we need to send these large files, I have our marketing department let
me know and I start the FTP services for them to use. Depending on the
content and length of time I need to keep the services running, I will
password protect access. I use different IP's and only have it available
for a short period of time - usually a few hours. Generally the information
is only going to a few recipients so it may not work for a mass email of
sorts or when the information needs to be available for long a period of
time. You'd need to consider all the security factors then.

..my 2 cents

There's your answer - @home.com has a size limit on mail messages. Try
compressing or splitting the files and sending them in sections...

Windows Update

2001-08-29 Thread Sean Martin

Is anyone else having problems with windowsupdate.microsoft.com? I can
connect to the site but it never finishes loading. Ping requests are timing
out (207.46.106.88) and tracert shows a drop after some router (as far as I
can tell). It's probably a problem somewhere along our LONG route, but I
thought I'd ask if anyone else was having problems.

I agree with Bill on this one..

Hey, what about OpenBSD using smtp/sendmail?
It's free, the most unhackable non-MS OS(due to it's constant updates) and is easily configured(as UNIX goes). SMTP is fairly simple(sorry for the pun) to setup on it.

I like it when the recipient SMTP handler returns the maximum male size
limit in the NDR, like the one below. Not all of them do.

That way you can assess if your male package is the right size for the
recipient to take delivery. Without that information, one might try sending
and resending until the male fits.

I like it when the recipient SMTP handler returns the maximum male size
limit in the NDR, like the one below.  Not all of them do.

That way you can assess if your male package is the right size for the
recipient to take delivery.  Without that information, one might try sending
and resending until the male fits.

How
do I change this limitation?

Message Tracking

2001-08-29 Thread Drew Sanders

Is there a way to track/log Internet Mail Service messages so that if
necessary could go back and identify who sent what message to whom?

I thought enabling message tracking would do this, but that doesn't give
much info except the where it was being sent to.

Turning on diagnostic logging (message transfer and addressing) didn't seem
to give the info I am looking for.

Is this possible with simple exchange tools? If not, is there a third party
application that serves this purpose?

  Not all of them do.
That way you can assess if your male package is the right size

Meeting requests, personal folders and delivery locations

2001-08-29 Thread Philippe W. De Roover

Hello,

[Exchange Server 5.5/Outlook 2000]

The default mail delivery location of a user's mailbox was set to a personal
folder due to limited assigned space on the Exchange server. For this reason
(Technet Q197273), accepted meeting requests were automatically updated in
the calendar where the default inbox is located, this means the PST's
calendar, which cannot be seen by other people. According to the article's
explanation, the default delivery location has been modified to the mailbox
on the Exchange server. Due to the same limited assigned space on the
Exchange server, a rule has been created to automatically move all the
messages from the default inbox to the PST's inbox, which means that meeting
requests are again updated in the PST's calendar...
Is there any possibility in this scenario to keep only the meeting requests
in the default inbox or must incoming mail be delivered to the mailbox on
the Exchange server for an appropriate use of updated meeting requests in
the calendar located on the server ?

Thanks in advance !

Sincerely regards,

Linux, because rebooting is for adding new hardware...

I won't question you on that one, William, as I have never had the need to
use it. I have maybe played around with it a little bit, and seemed that
for basic needs, it might be adequate. The other thing that I thought about
was that if cost is a prohibitive option, it is free. (I am sure that there
are other Free SMTP servers out there as well).

BTW - do you thing MS improved upon IIS SMTP server with W2K, or not? Just
curious.

RE: SMTP Servers

2001-08-29 Thread Lefkovics, William

Please do. Sometimes I answer these things off the cuff.

IIS SMTP is an SMTP transfer agent. It's not good for providing mail
services for a company. It will send email for a web-based or other
application. It's certainly good for mail relay purposes:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q230/2/35.asp

A mail server that this person is looking for would require a five mailbox,
client accessible solution.
Some options:
pmail http://www.pmail.com/
qmail http://www.qmail.com/
imail http://www.ipswitch.com/products/imail_server/
jmail http://www.jmail.com.my
dmail http://netwinsite.com/dmail_first.htm

Hmmm... seem to have a theme here.

How about with two letters:

slmail http://www.slmail.com/
ntmail http://www.ntmail.co.uk/

Microsoft has a list as well:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/partners/findoffering/commserv/Mail.asp

DL's in OWA

Strange problem -

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT 4 sp6a

User created DL's available in Outlook - stored in their Exchange profile are not available from OWA.  I see several blank contact records that I am assuming are these but no way to access them.  Is there a workaround for this?  I searched MS but could not find anything.

TIA
