Which version? 5.5 (and 2000 AFAIK) is fine, but anything less and you
need the annoying Microsoft Exchange Connector disk.

Blocking External E-mail

2001-10-03 Thread McCready, Robert

Were using Exchange 5.5, SP4, on NT 4.0, SP6. I know if I remove the SMTP
address
from a users mailbox, they will not be able to RECEIVE incoming E-mail from
outside
of the company. I can't remember what setting I change though to block them
from
SENDING E-mail outside the company. A point in the right direction would be
greatly
appreciated.

Thanks!

Robert

RE: EXchange 5.5 OWA on different server.

2001-10-03 Thread Richard McMahon

Install IIS on server
Put EX5.5 CD in drive
Run setup
Deselect everything appartfrom OWA
Following instructions on screen and specify the remote exchange server
Install SP of your choice for exchange

Thats basically it. You do have to make some changes for ssl but this will
get it running fairly quickly.

Oh yeah point your browser at http:\\servername\exchange\

Hope this helps

Hey all another quick question..

I've read it's possible to put OWA on a different server then your exhange

just see little things here and there saying it's possible, but nothing
going into detail on how to do it... Can someone point me in the direction
of some good material? thanx!

Exchange upgrade question

2001-10-03 Thread psmith

Hello all. I have a problem with Exchange 2k and AD (or, at least I think I
do!).

I have an Exchange 5.5 server in my domain, I built a new Exchange 2k
server, and am using the move mailbox method to move users to the new Exch
server. I first created an AD Connector to replicate the info from Ex 5.5
to AD, and it seemed to work. Several hours later, I ran the /ForestPrep
utility before installing Ex2k. I have now fully installed Exch2k, and
patched it with the latest sp.

My problem is, when I right-click on a user in AD, and select the Exchange
Tasks option, the only available Exchange option is Enable Instant
Messaging. There is no Move Mailbox option which, according to
everything I've read, there should be.

Anyone seen this? Anyone have any ideas what's going on? It's as if the
Exchange services didn't get installed on the new box. Help!

Pat,

1.) Are you using the ADC from the Exchange CD?

2.) Do you have one-way or two-way replication setup?
I believe you need to have two-way. I had two-way replication
setup during my migration and everything worked fine. I did the move
mailbox method.

3.) What machine are you using AD Users and Computers from? Do you have
the Exchange Admin tools on the machine you are using?

hidden recipients can't log into exchange via web outlook

I'd like to know of a way to hide names from the global address list via
Exchange 5.5 without losing the capability for those hidden users from

2001-10-03 Thread Andrew Chan

You need to install the Exchange Admin tools to what ever computer you
are going to manage from. If that is your DC, yes, you need to install
it on it.

The LDAP issue only applies to the situation where the Exchange is on a
DC.

Yes, I used the ADC from the Exch CD. I have 2-way setup. I set up a
brand new Win2k box that is the AD PDC, if you will. I did NOT install
the Exch Admin tools on that box, but rather the new Exch server.
Should I set up the Exch Admin tools on my AD Controller?

Thanks for the info. I'm also seeing some articles regarding LDAP and
port 389. Some say that the connector should run on something other
than 389. Did you change your LDAP port before doing the connector?

My problem is, when I right-click on a user in AD, and select the
Exchange Tasks option, the only available Exchange option is Enable
Instant Messaging. There is no Move Mailbox option which, according
to everything I've read, there should be.

Anyone seen this? Anyone have any ideas what's going on? It's as if
the Exchange services didn't get installed on the new box. Help!

Microsoft say...Because OWA uses a MAPI session for name resolution, a
hidden recipient cannot
be resolved to a user name. This is by design.

Though someone may know different. I'd like to know if it is possible too

I'd like to know of a way to hide names from the global address list via
Exchange 5.5 without losing the capability for those hidden users from
logging into the exchange server via web outlook. When you hide
mailboxes/usernames in exchange's Advanced tab, those selected can no
longer

access their mail via web. They'll get the message: OWA was unable to get
to your inbox. When disabling Hide from address book option box, the user
can log in. Anyone know what's the workaround/fix for this?

Thanking you in advance,

Jim

2001-10-03 Thread STEVE BROOK

Hi Drewski,

Can you expand on this?

Are you saying unhide the recipient then create an address book view
showing only the ones you wish to be seen. Then set permissions on who can
search the list. Do you then have to reset each client machine so the
default address book view points to your list instead of the GAL. How do
you stop people looking at the Global address list where they will see the
guy you are trying to hide?

NTBackup is a fine way to do your online backups. Provided that,
at least XAdmin is installed on the backup box. It does not do BLB's,
but if you read the Ed C. Never Restore Method, you won't have to restore

OK I'm doing
this correctly this time.
Does anyone use the native "NTBACKUP" utility
on their EX 5.5 installations to backup their Exchange IS's online? Recently
Microsoft recommended we use the native NTBACKUP utility to do the page
layer online backups. Just looking for input from anyone on this list
currently doing this, rather than going to a 3rd party application for
backups.
Also, do any of you know if individual
mailboxes can be restored when using NTBACKUP as the backup solution? I'm
not sure on this aspect, but I would suspect not, I don't think NTBACKUP
does brick layer backups.
Thanks for any input you have,

those great discussions. I personally try to unsubscribe to as many as I
can. Sometimes you can view source and go right to the unsub

If the
e-mails shouldn't be going to someone else (like their replacement,
manager, etc.) you can create a DL called Ex-employees and add the
addresses to the smtp address list. They just disappear.

Hello,

We have
deleted approximately 100 mailboxes that belonged to former
employees. Our administrator mailbox usually
received all Inbound mail
failures. Many of these email failures are due to users
subscribing to
various email services like horoscopes, daily sports news,
marketing news,
job news etc. Is there a way to block these emails from
evening entering
our Exchange server? We get a ton of Inbound Failure
messages everyday and

99percent of them are just useless listings that former employees
had
subscribed to. What is the best way to prevent these Inbound
Mail Failure
messages? Do you recommend putting all of these email
address in Message
Filtering? Is there a better option?

Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

It's one of those
great discussions. I personally try to unsubscribe to as many as I
can. Sometimes you can "view source" and go right to the unsub
screen.
If the e-mails
shouldn't be going to someone else (like their replacement, manager, etc.) you
can create a DL called "Ex-employees" and add the addresses to the smtp address
list. They just "disappear".

Subject: Notification Inbound
Mail

Hello,
We have deleted
approximately 100 mailboxes that belonged to former employees. Our
"administrator" mailbox usually received all Inbound mail failures. Many of these
email failures are due to users subscribing to various email services like
horoscopes, daily sports news, marketing news, job news etc. Is there
a way to block these emails from evening entering our Exchange server? We
get a ton of Inbound Failure messages everyday and 99percent of them are just
useless listings that former employees had subscribed to. What is the best way
to prevent these Inbound Mail Failure messages? Do you recommend putting
all of these email address in Message Filtering? Is there a better
option?

Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

actually, I was hoping to jumpstart my brain, but it appears that my backup

However, a search of Technet for Address book views reveals... not a whole
heck of a lot. Mutter.

Microsoft say...Because OWA uses a MAPI session for name resolution, a

I'd like to know of a way to hide names from the global address list via
Exchange 5.5 without losing the capability for those hidden users from
logging into the exchange server via web outlook. When you hide
mailboxes/usernames in exchange's Advanced tab, those selected can no longer

access their mail via web. They'll get the message: OWA was unable to get
to your inbox. When disabling Hide from address book option box, the user
can log in. Anyone know what's the workaround/fix for this?

Thanking you in advance,

Jim

Site connectors between NT 2000 server

2001-10-03 Thread Paul Owen

We have two Exchange 5.5 SP3 servers in different domains, one on NT4 and
one on 2000 Server (don't ask why, way too complicated political). Users
homed on the 2000 server now need access to calendars on the NT server.
The 2000 server is NOT a domain controller. The two domains have a 100Meg
LAN link.
I can't get Exch5.5 on the 2000 server to communicate via a site connector
with Exch5.5 on the NT server (still with me?), I get a
DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM error.
Technet article Q150880 seems the only article remotely relevent, and says
If the Exchange Server computer is only a member server of the domain and
not a PDC or BDC, remote administration will not work. The Exchange Server
must be either a BDC or a PDC.
Anyone know if it's possible to get around this, or am I missing
something? I don't really want to have to remove 2000 for NT, nor do I
want to install Active Directory.

Hello all. I have a problem with Exchange 2k and AD (or, at least I
think I do!).

I have an Exchange 5.5 server in my domain, I built a new Exchange 2k
server, and am using the move mailbox method to move users to the new
Exch server. I first created an AD Connector to replicate the info from
Ex 5.5 to AD, and it seemed to work. Several hours later, I ran the
/ForestPrep utility before installing Ex2k. I have now fully installed
Exch2k, and patched it with the latest sp.

Help!

Also, according to the article, you have to call MS to get it. Is that because it's

If the error Martin describes comes up just click ignore or whatever and
continue on. It works fine.

It was a fresh Windows 2000 Server installation, no service pack yet
installed, installing from a Select CD containing Exchange EE 5.5. I
don't recall the exact error message, as this was a week or two ago and
the machine is no longer in my hands, so I can't re-create the problem.
Sorry this is so unhelpful. I guess I'll try it again in a week when I
get that box back. Maybe I just goofed something up.

Thanks, Sean

Hello,
We have deleted approximately 100
mailboxes that belonged to former employees. Our "administrator"
mailbox usually received all Inbound mail failures. Many of
these email failures are due to users subscribing to various email services
like horoscopes, daily sports news, marketing news, job news etc. Is
there a way to block these emails from evening entering our Exchange
server? We get a ton of Inbound Failure messages everyday
and
99percent of them are just useless
listings that former employees had subscribed to. What is the best
way to prevent these Inbound Mail Failure messages? Do you
recommend putting all of these email address in Message Filtering? Is there
a better option?

Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

  It's one of
those great discussions. I personally try to unsubscribe to as many as I
can. Sometimes you can "view source" and go right to the unsub
  screen.
  If the e-mails
shouldn't be going to someone else (like their replacement, manager, etc.) you
can create a DL called "Ex-employees" and add the addresses to the smtp
  address list. They just "disappear".

  Mail

  Hello,
  We have deleted
approximately 100 mailboxes that belonged to former employees. Our
"administrator" mailbox usually received all Inbound mail failures. Many of
these email failures are due to users subscribing to various email services like
horoscopes, daily sports news, marketing news, job news etc. Is
there a way to block these emails from evening entering our Exchange server?
We get a ton of Inbound Failure messages everyday and 99percent of them are just
useless listings that former employees had subscribed to. What
is the best way to prevent these Inbound Mail Failure messages? Do you
recommend putting all of these email address in Message Filtering? Is there a
  better option?

  Any suggestions
  would be greatly appreciated.
  Thanks,

RE: MS crop tool for PST files

2001-10-03 Thread Matthew Western

we have the same problem here.
1. Separate into years (1999.pst, 2000.pst, 2001.pst)
2. archive old years to CD
3. put the old years .pst files to the hard drive some place where they
can't find them and open them in mail folders and don't back them up to the
file server..that way you can search the file server for .pst files and
if one appears like 1999.pst you can just blow it away knowing that it's on
their CDs in their drawer...

use multiple PST files.

Meanwhile, it seems like half our customers just have an Inbox with
2000+ messages in every one. *sigh*

2001-10-03 Thread Joe L. Casale

Wow dude, so you built another server entirely, not at all connected to
the original? What ware did you use to do the restore, and what was the
config of the orig server compared to the config of the second, ie sp
levels, exchange HF's, names, all that. Also post back your steps, and
order of installing all HF's, and sps, and then restores etc...

Hi

We r using exchagne 5.5 sp4 on NT4 sp6.
I restored IS and DS on another server having same settings as the
original one. But now when i want to make any changes to any setting in
exchange or want to install antivirus, it gives me following message:

The Directory is busy. Wait a few seconds and try again.
ID: DS_E_BUSY.

What should i do. I have spent two nights and still stands nowhere.

I havent mixed that kind of config, but I would suggest, IMO, to keep
the server config consistent across a site... They play nice that way,
well, most of the time
