RE: WLKMMAS

2002-04-08 Thread Snook, Kevin S (ITD)

Ray,

Like you, I never planned any of this!

I guess the only thing a degree has helped me with is having a formalised
approach to problem-solving and project work. For my last degree, I worked
on network security algorithms but whilst I was at the college I helped in
the college's labs with the networking and admin. Since I've left college,
I've never touched a network security job again. So even with a relevant
research degree, there's no such thing as a projected career path.

I'm quite happy with what I've achieved and know that I've worked hard to
earn something. That's the satisfaction of degrees to me. But I'm also as
satisfied with the fact that I've built up a small company (which is being
sold) and hopefully helped a few people along the way.

The thing that means the most to me though is that I've gained freedom of
choice through my hard work. I'm retiring from computing at the end of this
year. I crave new challenges now.

Well, of course, YMMV. And I wouldn't trade my college years for anything
primarily because of the social aspect. But career-wise, unless you
consider that the guy that gave me my first real job ($4/hr. fixing
printers) gave me a shot because I had a degree (Business) and was therefore
trainable, it hasn't helped much. Of course, I could've tried to find
something else. Getting into IT wasn't a dream of mine at the time (1978).
It was the first job that I could find.

If someone asked me, I would tell them to go to college. Personally, I
think a college degree is a nice thing to have no matter what field you
go into. I'm 21 and like many, my experience was gained through not
having a social life when I was a teenager ;) (Though things have
changed now), I am still gaining tons of experience. I left as an
assistant here to work for Microsoft as a contractor when I was 19.
After a year there, and loving it, I decided I just wanted to go back
to school and finish up a 4 year degree- in whatever it may be, and
probably return back to the Redmond area. In the meantime I landed a
position back at where I was an assistant, as their admin and have
gained even more experience, while attending college. I have no certs,
but it's something I figured I would try to get as well, to get them out
of the way. Why not? At any rate, I feel a college degree is worth it.

I'll agree that getting a college degree, or certs, does not guarantee
competency. Not all doctors and lawyers are competent any more than all
MCSE's are competent. You still have to prove yourself. The problem is
somebody has to give you a chance.

Unfortunately, having MCSE's on staff is part of the marketing hype used
to
sell services. You, and other MVPs, have kind of transcended the need
for a
MS cert, but you're probably more the exception rather than the rule. It
does seem, though, that many of the MVPs do have MS Certs.

I don't know what I'd tell a high school senior that wants to get into a
technical career.

Re: b) I don't think that's true in most cases. Many of the great
consultants I work with (or have had working for me when I was in a
regular company) didn't have degrees. And I don't have a degree (or any
certs, for that matter), and I certainly seem to have had zero problems
finding a job with a large consultancy.

BUT... I do think that college degrees are valuable things, and
wouldn't mind having one. Finding time to go back and get one at this
point is something I'd like to do, but other things keep cropping up and
I haven't dedicated myself to doing it yet.

a) You won't be able to get a job outside the US - most countries
require a
minimum academic qualification for immigration now (there are
exceptions -
Canada and Australia being the main ones)
b) Simple fact is though you won't even get invited for interview at a
lot
of companies. Most large consultancies are like this.

So to say you can choose your own career path is simply not true.

Folks...

We need to update OL2000 public holidays with 2003 UK holidays. Is this
something Microsoft provide updates for, and if not, any thoughts on how we
can roll this out to all our desktops?

As always, any help greatly appreciated

I've come up with a utility that will do this centrally i.e. you run the
app. once and it updates all user's calendars. Drop me a line at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want it. It's called calload.exe

Folks...

We need to update OL2000 public holidays with 2003 UK holidays. Is this
something Microsoft provide updates for, and if not, any thoughts on how we
can roll this out to all our desktops?

As always, any help greatly appreciated

2002-04-08 Thread Snook, Kevin S (ITD)

Apologies but someone contacted me about an add-in for Outlook that would,
when someone sends on behalf of another user, write items to their Sent
Items folder as opposed to the primary mailbox's Sent Items folder. Sadly,
I've forgotten who it was, so could you drop me a line again:

I would recommend the IM client from here:

That won't solve your logon problem though.

When you set up the IM Home server, what did you enter as domain? Does it
work with:

I would recommend the IM client from here: http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/downloads/2000/default.asp

That won't solve your logon problem though.
When you set up the IM Home server, what did you enter as
domain? Does it work with: username@imhomehostnam

RE: Computer Freezes using outlook

2002-04-08 Thread Cross, Tom

We had a problem last week with the same sort of problem. We had a link
down to the site that was involved. They had a domain controller there on
site, but they had about 20 clients that were locking up when accessing
Outlook. The link came back up and the problem went away. Another member
of this newsgroup said they found that DNS and WINS problems can cause this
kind of stuff. We are now trying to fix this so it doesn't happen again.

Subject: Computer Freezes using outlook

We have several NT 4.0 servers running with Exchange 5.5 on top of it. In
general we have around 1000 mailboxes on each MSX server.

Our clients are equipped with Windows 2000 and Outlook 2000. The problem
that occurs is that on several clients using outlook the program stops
responding varying from 1 second to a couple of minutes more times a day. We
already put a sniffer on the client to find out the reason. The only
information we get back from this snif is that it tells us that at the
moment of the freeze it is waiting for the Exchange server to give data
back.

It is on all our servers and not clientlocationspecific too.

Does anyone know what the possible reason of these freezes can be, and/or
which data he is waiting for?

OWA/IIS question

2002-04-08 Thread Thompson, Elizabeth

NT 4 SP 6 with NT Option pack 4
IIS 4.0 with up-to-date patches as of 2-22-02
Exchange 5.5. SP4 with IMC connector

No mailboxes are physically on this exchange server as it acts as a
gateway only. This machine is a newly constructed machine built on 2-22-02.
This is the only exchange server on site with iis installed. All internet
mail is routed through this machine.

We are running the OWA off of this machine. It works fine most of the time,
then suddenly it will give ASP error 0115: unexpected error when you
attempt to access the web interface.

The application log shows the following:
Date 4-8-02
time 08:43:53
Source: Active Server Pages
Category: None
Event id:5
Error: File /exchange/USA/root.asp Unexpected error
data: empty

It will continue to give the error till the machine is rebooted. As far as I
can tell the IIS seems to be functing ok, and stopping and restarting the
service doesn't solve the problem. Some people are still able to get in and
access their mailboxes while others can't. I could once while my partner
couldn't. If you are in your mailbox via the web when the error starts
occuring you are fine till you log off. The asp error doesn't occur on a
regular basis but once it does, it requires a reboot to clear.

I do not know if this is an NT or exchange issue.

Any suggustions would be appreciated,

Thanks

ASP0115 Errors Logging into OWA
Asp0115 errors can occur for various reasons on an OWA server. Factors to
check will depend on the version of IIS that you are using. When you attempt
to log on to http://servername/exchange, you may either have a problem with
the browser hanging indefinitely, or it may return an error similar to the
following:

error 'ASP0115'

Unexpected error

/vroot/page

A trappable error occurred in an external object. The script cannot continue
running.

If you are using IIS 3.0 with Exchange 5.0 or 5.5 and OWA, a fix to correct
session variables is available at the following Web site:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/iis/iis-public/fixes/usa/asp/asp-sesfix/

If you are using IIS 4.0 with Exchange 5.5 and OWA, a fix to correct heap
corruption is available in the latest Exchange Server service pack. You may
need to upgrade your server to at least Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 1.

If you are using IIS 4.0 with Exchange 5.5 and OWA and have installed
Service Pack 1 and experience this error, a fix to correct this problem can
be found at the following Web site:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/exchange/exchange-public/fixes/Eng/Exchg5.5/P

The above listed fixes are for specific problems associated with ASP0115
errors. Be sure to check for appropriate Microsoft Knowledge Base articles
describing these fixes before implementing them. You may also wish to
contact Microsoft technical support to confirm before installing these
fixes.

Computer Freezes using outlook
We have several NT 4.0 servers running
with Exchange 5.5 on top of it. In general we have around 1000 mailboxes on
each MSX server.
Our clients are equipped with Windows
2000 and Outlook 2000. The problem that occurs is that on several clients
using outlook the program stops responding varying from 1 second to a couple
of minutes more times a day. We already put a sniffer on the client to find
out the reason. The only information we get back from this snif is that it
tells us that at the moment of the freeze it is waiting for the Exchange
server to give data back.
It is on all our servers and not
clientlocationspecific too.
Does anyone know what the possible
reason of these freezes can be, and/or which data he is waiting for?

Thanks

You
might have email addresses ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) try using [EMAIL PROTECTED] ie
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also
check if your Virtual messaging server is set to host messaging accounts, also
make sure you type the full domain name in the DNS server
field...
Thats
what worked for me..

Service Pack 1 and experience this error, a fix to correct this problem can
be found at the following Web site:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/exchange/exchange-public/fixes/Eng/Exchg5.5/P
ostSP1/CDOHtml-fix/

The above listed fixes are for specific problems associated with ASP0115
errors. Be sure to check for appropriate Microsoft Knowledge Base articles
describing these fixes before implementing them. You may also wish to
contact Microsoft technical support to confirm before installing these
fixes.

Thanks

2002-04-08 Thread Tom.Gray

Hmmm. Certs are just that -- Certifications for a specific
item/entity/product.
Certs are great if you want to focus on that particular part/parts of IT.
They
are not necessary, but every cert course I've taken I've learned at least
one
nugget from the course, and probably 10 from the folks taking the course
with me.

But, a college degree can do many things for you:
1) Lots of jobs (not just IT) want that BA, BS, etc or equivalent
experience
Proving that experience may be easy, but many a hiring person doesn't
want
to take that time to prove to the HR folks this was good.
Basically, it makes it easier to hire you. (certs help here also)
2) Having a degree in Computer Science can be very helpful. Sure, you
didn't
learn how to install Win2k, Exchange or configure a router, but you
probably
(hopefully) learned the theory behind routing, programming, operating
systems
and such. Database theory, probability, etc. Heck, even ethernet
protocols
and such. When you have to troubleshoot a large problem, having some
background
in all those areas can come in handy.
3) Getting thru college proves you can deal with the system. They have to
manage
your time, follow the rules, get the forms done correctly, take the
classes, deal
with all the good (and not so good) instructors/professors etc. In the
real world
the skills you obtained doing all these come in handy.
4) College, unlike the workplace, is a great place to co-mingle. This is
usually
frowned upon in the workplace! (grin)

But in the end, real world experience and your own personality/work ethic
should
provide you the vehicle to travel down your career path! The rest is just a
bunch of options that might make the journey easier!

 Rodney,

I had a similar problem only with Exchange 2000 and Outlook 2000

David Michel came up with this solution which worked for me:

Open Outlook for the secretary and remove the CEO's mailbox from

folder in the folder list and remove any permissions set here. The
exception is that you want to make sure the Folder Visible tab is
checked on the Outlook Today permissions tab for whoever you want to
see the contents. After you remove all permissions go back to the
Delegates tab for the CEO and re-add the secretary with whatever rights
you want. Lastly, go back to the secretary and open Outlook using the
/cleanviews switch and then re-add the CEO's mailbox to open. This
worked for me so hopefully it works for you.

Obviously just substitute CEO and secretary with your two users...Might

 Subject: Calendar problem

 Hi All,
This user is having a problem with his calendar. It seems that all his
appointments are disappearing as time goes by. Basically, what happens
 is
as the week goes by, his items will disappear. For example, it's tuesday
and all his items on monday have been deleted and they are in the
 deleted
items folder. When it's wednesday, all the items on tuesday are moved to
the deleted items folder. If I do a restore from the deleted items
 folder,
those items will stay in his calendar.
The system is Exchange 5.5 and the client is outlook 2000. Now, I have
 to
specify that there is a delegate to the user as well who does the
modifications to the calendar. This problem started about 2 weeks ago
 and
nothing has been changed. I checked out the rules and there is nothing
 in
the rules that should delete those calendar items.
If anyone has ideas, please advise.
 Thank you,
 Rodney Li

DSAMAIN

And they actually pay us to do this...oh sorry wrong group!!!

NT4 SP6a
Exchange 5.5 SP4

After about three days the directory service (DSAMAIN) starts using around
70% CPU usage. It runs like this for a few hours then crashes the server.
No event entry at all. Any ideas as to why? Or is this caused by another
problem.

Distribution lists and Custom Attributes-HELP!

2002-04-08 Thread Kevin Fricke

In Exchange 2000, can you make membership in a distribution group
dependent on a Custom Attribute? So if I set up a group, everyone with
that Custom Attribute would automatically be in that group?

We used address book views in Exchange 5.5 in lieu of setting up any
distribution lists. Now, I want to avoid having to create and populate all
of those groups in AD.

Is there a better way to do this?

but there is nothing I can see that should have this effect. (No rules

Thanks,

 Rodney,

I had a similar problem only with Exchange 2000 and Outlook 2000

David Michel came up with this solution which worked for me:

Open Outlook for the secretary and remove the CEO's mailbox from
opening then close it. Then go into Outlook for the CEO and remove
all
permissions from the delegates tab. Next, right-click each individual
folder in the folder list and remove any permissions set here. The

2002-04-08 Thread Mike Zatkalik

Wow, never thought this thread would still be going. :) Anyway, I just
wanted to take a minute and thank everyone for there input, as it seems
like there are a lot of people in the same position as myself. I agree
and if I could do things over, I would have definitely finished college,
but in my situation, I couldn't do it, due to financial issues. Being
25, living alone and supporting myself with a full time job, I just
don't have the time to go back to school and finish my degree. I am
thinking that in my case, it would probably be most beneficial to get
some certs for now and, grin if things slow down /grin, may be able
to go back to finish this up.

Hmmm. Certs are just that -- Certifications for a specific
item/entity/product.
Certs are great if you want to focus on that particular part/parts of
IT.
They
are not necessary, but every cert course I've taken I've learned at
least
one
nugget from the course, and probably 10 from the folks taking the course

They
have to
manage
your time, follow the rules, get the forms done correctly, take the
classes, deal
with all the good (and not so good) instructors/professors etc. In
the
real world
the skills you obtained doing all these come in handy.
4) College, unlike the workplace, is a great place to co-mingle. This
is
usually
frowned upon in the workplace! (grin)

But in the end, real world experience and your own personality/work
ethic
should
provide you the vehicle to travel down your career path! The rest is
just a
bunch of options that might make the journey easier!

Ray,

Like you, I never planned any of this!

I guess the only thing a degree has helped me with is having a
formalised
approach to problem-solving and project work. For my last degree, I
worked
on network security algorithms but whilst I was at the college I helped
in
the college's labs with the networking and admin. Since I've left
college,
I've never touched a network security job again. So even with a relevant
research degree, there's no such thing as a projected career path.

I'm quite happy with what I've achieved and know that I've worked hard
to
earn something. That's the satisfaction of degrees to me. But I'm also
as
satisfied with the fact that I've built up a small company (which is
being
sold) and hopefully helped a few people along the way.

The thing that means the most to me though is that I've gained freedom
of
choice through my hard work. I'm retiring from computing at the end of
this
year. I crave new challenges now.

Well, of course, YMMV. And I wouldn't trade my college years for
anything
primarily because of the social aspect. But career-wise, unless you
consider that the guy that gave me my first real job ($4/hr. fixing
printers) gave me a shot because I had a degree (Business) and was
therefore
trainable, it hasn't helped much. Of course, I could've tried to find

If the timezone settings are correct, you might start looking for
communiction problems between the servers. If it's a managed switch check
the switch stats for errors on those 2 ports. If you see anything in the
Late Collisions counters start looking for a duplex mismatch.
