RE: WLKMMAS
Ray, Like you, I never planned any of this! I guess the only thing a degree has helped me with is having a formalised approach to problem-solving and project work. For my last degree, I worked on network security algorithms but whilst I was at the college I helped in the college's labs with the networking and admin. Since I've left college, I've never touched a network security job again. So even with a relevant research degree, there's no such thing as a projected career path. I'm quite happy with what I've achieved and know that I've worked hard to earn something. That's the satisfaction of degrees to me. But I'm also as satisfied with the fact that I've built up a small company (which is being sold) and hopefully helped a few people along the way. The thing that means the most to me though is that I've gained freedom of choice through my hard work. I'm retiring from computing at the end of this year. I crave new challenges now. Kevin -Original Message- From: Ray Zorz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 05 April 2002 18:42 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: WLKMMAS Well, of course, YMMV. And I wouldn't trade my college years for anything primarily because of the social aspect. But career-wise, unless you consider that the guy that gave me my first real job ($4/hr. fixing printers) gave me a shot because I had a degree (Business) and was therefore trainable, it hasn't helped much. Of course, I could've tried to find something else. Getting into IT wasn't a dream of mine at the time (1978). It was the first job that I could find. -Original Message- From: Paul Green [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, April 05, 2002 10:25 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: WLKMMAS If someone asked me, I would tell them to go to college. Personally, I think a college degree is a nice thing to have no matter what field you go into. I'm 21 and like many, my experience was gained through not having a social life when I was a teenager ;) (Though things have changed now), I am still gaining tons of experience. I left as an assistant here to work for Microsoft as a contractor when I was 19. After a year there, and loving it, I decided I just wanted to go back to school and finish up a 4 year degree- in whatever it may be, and probably return back to the Redmond area. In the meantime I landed a position back at where I was an assistant, as their admin and have gained even more experience, while attending college. I have no certs, but it's something I figured I would try to get as well, to get them out of the way. Why not? At any rate, I feel a college degree is worth it. paul green seattle -Original Message- From: Ray Zorz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Friday, April 05, 2002 8:54 AM Posted To: Exchange 2000 Server Conversation: WLKMMAS Subject: RE: WLKMMAS I'll agree that getting a college degree, or certs, does not guarantee competency. Not all doctors and lawyers are competent any more than all MCSE's are competent. You still have to prove yourself. The problem is somebody has to give you a chance. Unfortunately, having MCSE's on staff is part of the marketing hype used to sell services. You, and other MVPs, have kind of transcended the need for a MS cert, but you're probably more the exception rather than the rule. It does seem, though, that many of the MVPs do have MS Certs. I don't know what I'd tell a high school senior that wants to get into a technical career. -Original Message- From: Missy Koslosky [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, April 05, 2002 9:25 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Re: WLKMMAS Re: b) I don't think that's true in most cases. Many of the great consultants I work with (or have had working for me when I was in a regular company) didn't have degrees. And I don't have a degree (or any certs, for that matter), and I certainly seem to have had zero problems finding a job with a large consultancy. BUT... I do think that college degrees are valuable things, and wouldn't mind having one. Finding time to go back and get one at this point is something I'd like to do, but other things keep cropping up and I haven't dedicated myself to doing it yet. RE: Computer Freezes using outlook
We had a problem last week with the same sort of problem. We had a link down to the site that was involved. They had a domain controller there on site, but they had about 20 clients that were locking up when accessing Outlook. The link came back up and the problem went away. Another member of this newsgroup said they found that DNS and WINS problems can cause this kind of stuff. We are now trying to fix this so it doesn't happen again. In general we have around 1000 mailboxes on each MSX server. Our clients are equipped with Windows 2000 and Outlook 2000. The problem that occurs is that on several clients using outlook the program stops responding varying from 1 second to a couple of minutes more times a day. We already put a sniffer on the client to find out the reason. The only information we get back from this snif is that it tells us that at the moment of the freeze it is waiting for the Exchange server to give data back. It is on all our servers and not clientlocationspecific too. Does anyone know what the possible reason of these freezes can be, and/or which data he is waiting for? OWA/IIS question
NT 4 SP 6 with NT Option pack 4 IIS 4.0 with up-to-date patches as of 2-22-02 Exchange 5.5. SP4 with IMC connector No mailboxes are physically on this exchange server as it acts as a gateway only. This machine is a newly constructed machine built on 2-22-02. This is the only exchange server on site with iis installed. All internet mail is routed through this machine. We are running the OWA off of this machine. It works fine most of the time, then suddenly it will give ASP error 0115: unexpected error when you attempt to access the web interface. The application log shows the following: Date 4-8-02 time 08:43:53 Source: Active Server Pages Category: None Event id:5 Error: File /exchange/USA/root.asp Unexpected error data: empty It will continue to give the error till the machine is rebooted. As far as I can tell the IIS seems to be functing ok, and stopping and restarting the service doesn't solve the problem. Some people are still able to get in and access their mailboxes while others can't. I could once while my partner couldn't. If you are in your mailbox via the web when the error starts occuring you are fine till you log off. The asp error doesn't occur on a regular basis but once it does, it requires a reboot to clear. I do not know if this is an NT or exchange issue. Any suggustions would be appreciated, Thanks Liz Thompson List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

There is an AGE LIMIT available that will automatically delete articles from your PF's. You can set these on either the PUBLIC INFORMATION STORE object to set a default for all PF's or you can set it individually on the LIMITS tab, in the Exchange Admin program. Watchout 5.5 SP4 Migration Issues to 2000 SP2
In our lab we have been unable to succesfully join an Exchange 2000 server into an existing 5.5 site running SP4. All that is required to make this setup work is downgrade to SP3. I was hesitent to believe this was the problem, but we have relicated this setup twice in the lab. Is this documented anywhere? I've had a tough time getting motivated to keep up with the latest I guess. -Original Message- From: Snook, Kevin S (ITD) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, April 08, 2002 1:58 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: WLKMMAS Ray, Like you, I never planned any of this! Hmmm. Certs are just that -- Certifications for a specific item/entity/product. Certs are great if you want to focus on that particular part/parts of IT. They are not necessary, but every cert course I've taken I've learned at least one nugget from the course, and probably 10 from the folks taking the course with me. But, a college degree can do many things for you: 1) Lots of jobs (not just IT) want that BA, BS, etc or equivalent experience Proving that experience may be easy, but many a hiring person doesn't want to take that time to prove to the HR folks this was good. Basically, it makes it easier to hire you. (certs help here also) 2) Having a degree in Computer Science can be very helpful. Sure, you didn't learn how to install Win2k, Exchange or configure a router, but you probably (hopefully) learned the theory behind routing, programming, operating systems and such. Database theory, probability, etc. Heck, even ethernet protocols and such. When you have to troubleshoot a large problem, having some background in all those areas can come in handy. 3) Getting thru college proves you can deal with the system. They have to manage your time, follow the rules, get the forms done correctly, take the classes, deal with all the good (and not so good) instructors/professors etc. In the real world the skills you obtained doing all these come in handy. 4) College, unlike the workplace, is a great place to co-mingle. RE: Calendar problem
Hi Graham, I did the cleanup like you suggested but it didn't fix my problem. Just to inform everyone, I have this one user that is having all his items moved to the deleted items folder as the day goes by. He has a delegate set up but there is nothing I can see that should have this effect. (No rules to do a cleanup..nothing). Thanks, Rodney Rodney, I had a similar problem only with Exchange 2000 and Outlook 2000 David Michel came up with this solution which worked for me: Open Outlook for the secretary and remove the CEO's mailbox from opening then close it. Then go into Outlook for the CEO and remove all permissions from the delegates tab. Next, right-click each individual folder in the folder list and remove any permissions set here. The exception is that you want to make sure the Folder Visible tab is checked on the Outlook Today permissions tab for whoever you want to see the contents. After you remove all permissions go back to the Delegates tab for the CEO and re-add the secretary with whatever rights you want. Lastly, go back to the secretary and open Outlook using the /cleanviews switch and then re-add the CEO's mailbox to open. This worked for me so hopefully it works for you. Obviously just substitute CEO and secretary with your two users...Might be worth a try Cheers Graham -Original Message- From: Rodney Li [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]=20 Sent: 02 April 2002 19:36 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Calendar problem Hi All, This user is having a problem with his calendar. The organizational units divide our users into several Recipients. I would like to move these email accounts from the Recipients folder to the other sub organizational folders. Can this be done? RE: Installing E2K System Manager
If you don't want them to have admin access, why don't you try setting up a performance monitor on their system? There are a number of Exchange specific values in Performance Monitor that give a lot of information about the queues and incomeing/outgoing traffic. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, 9 April 2002 5:33 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Installing E2K System Manager Are there any DLLs you can register to load the Exchange 2000 System Manager on a system without having to run setup off the CD? We're trying to find a way to allow non-administrators to monitor some aspects of our E2K servers (such as mail queues) without giving them admin-level rights to E2K. Any ideas? Thanks. LDAP Servers
Hi guys, Just wondering if someone may be able to shed some light on an issue for me. I have a client with Exch 2000 sp2 and they are affiliated with a large number of other offices. Their head office has setup an ldap server with the entire address book for all offices. How can I make this available to all users through Exchange? RE: LDAP Servers
Were you thinking of synching directory information? Or just querying? Can the users not access the LDAP server directly?
