RE: Attachment sending problem

2002-05-02 Thread Neil Hobson

The mailbox limit won't override the IMS. Let us know what happens when
you disable the size limit on the IMS and restart it.

The IMS connector is set with 10MB limit but for my mailbox I have given
100MB. I have not restarted IMS as I didnot changed IMS settings. I
however can change IMS setting to NO limit and then test the attachment.
If I enable the log file will it be of any help in trouble shooting this
problem.

That assumes properly configured and RFC compliant MTA's on the
recipient end as well.

Well, just to be sure, Anwar, did you stop and restart the IMS after
making changes to the limits?

Possibly. But if that's the case, wouldn't the reporting device be the
remote MTA and not the local IMS (confusing with the domain name being
ims as well!)

I'm sure I've seen the local IMS report a similar error before, but hey,
it's been a long week so far and I could easily be wrong here... :-)

I am trying to send a 8MB file to a client. I have checked at my end and
dont see any problem but still this the attachments are not reaching the
client. I have removed all mailbox size limits on Exchange 5.5 and don't
know what else to do so that the attachment will reach client. I checked
with the client and they said that they dont have any restriction at
their end. Following is the NDR I am getting. I will appreciate if any
one can give any suggestion how to trouble shoot this problem

RE: PST Bad - why?

2002-05-02 Thread Snook, Kevin S (ITD)

PST=BAD is a bad equation. It should be PST=Usually Bad. Sometimes, you
don't have any choice. For instance, when doing migrations or moving
mailboxes. However, generally you shouldn't use them for permanent storage.
They are actually very similar to the old MSMail format for storing mail
which was also prone to failure.

Hello all sorry to ask a stupid question, but my pointy haired boss is
looking at implementing PST's here and I know many people say pst's are not
good, could you guys give me some ammo to argue why PST's aren't a good
option and what problems will end up occurring if it is implemented.

Thanks in advance.

Please elaborate more on the issue. I'm also in a dilemma. My users are hard headed when it comes to mailbox size.
One way is to go .PST. My disk space is now only 560k.

Wally,

Kumusta po kayo?

The
.pst will take up disk space. Some companies will have separate budgets for NT
servers and Exchange servers so you end up with lots of disk space on home
drives but no spare capacity in the Exchange server IS. A choice a lot of
companies make in this scenario, is to go down the .pst route. The .psts are
stored on home drives so get backed up. A certain large oil company I worked for
deployed over 300,000 .psts in this way. Probably best not to START with that
strategy but sometimes you've just got to run with whatever you're
given!

Sige!

AW: Removing Unknown SMTP/ESMTP Message Headers/Keywords

2002-05-02 Thread Rickenbacher Beat

The
only thing I experienced with watchguard was that there are/had
beenproblems with other mail servers if you use the
standardEHLO-Command (ESMTP-Command).It seems to get an error at
AUTH GSSAPI NTLM LOGIN probably causeit's an ESMTP-Keyword with spaces in
between.
After
I checked the watchguard log and then decided to switch to HELO at the E2K
server it worked fine! (No, I didn't like the solution...)
Perhaps if one configures the watchguard firewall properly this wouldn't
be an issue...

We use a watchguard firewall which, by

keywordsthat have beenrejected by our firewall during the past

interested in the security ramifications of adding these (we use Exchange

PST=BAD is a bad equation. It should be
PST=Usually Bad. Sometimes, you don't
have any choice. For instance, when doing migrations or moving
mailboxes. However, generally you shouldn't use
them for permanent storage. They are
actually very similar to the old MSMail format for storing mail
which was also prone to failure.

RE: Attachment sending problem

2002-05-02 Thread Anwar Qureshi

I have changed the IMS connector from 10MB to NO limit and all attachments
are going through fine. The 10MB limit was setup for past 6 months and
doesnot had any problems. One of my user yesterday was trying to send 4MB
attachment and was still getting the same message 'Message exceeds size
limit'. After changing to No limits everything is working fine.

I will try to put back 10MB limit on IMS connector later on just to see if
it works this time

Thanks everyone for your valuable feedback.

Possibly. But if that's the case, wouldn't the reporting device be the
remote MTA and not the local IMS (confusing with the domain name being
ims as well!)

I'm sure I've seen the local IMS report a similar error before, but hey,
it's been a long week so far and I could easily be wrong here... :-)

I know what you mean; some NDRs are very misleading. I agree, the 4Mb
problem does seem weird; even with a hefty 40% encoding on top, that
doesn't make 10Mb.

Mind you, I have seen some strange things recently with a customer who
had a message storm caused by what was originally a 2k message being
shown as a 2Mb message in the MTA queue.

Your receovery server has to exactly match your production server. Same OS
same OS service packs same OS security patches. Same Version of Exchange
and same exchange patches.

I did this last week if you like I can send you step by step notes on how I

Hey there,

I am in the process of setting up a recovery server, Exchange 5.5 SP4,
NT4.sp6.
When I restore the IS, like all the TIDS say, I can never get the IS to
start. The error I get is related to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q200941. Basically
I want to start the IS and then exmerge some data out. I am using arcserve
2k with sp3 and restoring to a non-production server with the same site ID
and org names. The events I get are 1080 and 5000.

Hi Rodney,

Since it seems that you have played around with

The res1.log and res2.log are log files that are

The .pat files are normally seen when backups are

running such an application on your exchange server.

If you
must, exclude the drives/partitions with Exchange on it. It does nothing
but totally slow your server down during the defrag and increases potential
corruption in the store and logs should you apply it there.

I have changed the IMS connector from 10MB to NO limit and all
attachments are going through fine. The 10MB limit was setup for past 6
months and doesnot had any problems. One of my user yesterday was trying
to send 4MB attachment and was still getting the same message 'Message
exceeds size limit'. After changing to No limits everything is working
fine.

I will try to put back 10MB limit on IMS connector later on just to see
if it works this time

Thanks everyone for your valuable feedback.

The IMS connector is set with 10MB limit but for my mailbox I have given
100MB. I have not restarted IMS as I didnot changed IMS settings. I
however can change IMS setting to NO limit and then test the attachment.
If I enable the log file will it be of any help in trouble shooting this

That assumes properly configured and RFC compliant MTA's on the

Well, just to be sure, Anwar, did you stop and restart the IMS after

Possibly. But if that's the case, wouldn't the reporting device be the
remote MTA and not the local IMS (confusing with the domain name being
ims as well!)

I'm sure I've seen the local IMS report a similar error before, but hey,
it's been a long week so far and I could easily be wrong here... :-)

disadvantage but so does letting the users run your IS out of space! We have
more problems with OWA only users running their mailbox out of space then with
psts.

BUT I would
not advocate them for everyone, as you must be ready for the inevitable failure.
You will have to sit down and figure out what
is best for your company, where you have the space and what polices can you
serious implement. (we had users using pst prior to our

  The
.pst will take up disk space. Some companies will have separate budgets for NT

Hello All, I having an error pop up in exchange adminstrator when I try to
pull up someone's mailbox. The error message is: Extension'FUSEREXT' could
not be loaded. The specified module could not be found Microsoft Windows NT
ID no: 0xc002007e. We had just changed the service account password and this
error had popped up after we did that. I can click ignore on the error, and
it brings up the properties for the mailbox. Then I try to change the
primary windows NT account for the mailbox and it says access denied. I
then check the service account and it is locked. Any ideas would be helpful.

Do you use any 3rd party apps that integrate with Exchange? Fax server
maybe? Could be a password problem with that Extension.

Outlook Team Calendars

2002-05-02 Thread Desiree Herrmann

Does anyone have experience working with Team Calendars in Outlook 2000? I
have been instructed to implement Team Calendars, but the support at
Microsoft doesn't give me much to go on for troubleshooting. I've gotten
them to work on all W2K/Office 2K systems, but am having problems with about
1/2 of the W98 workstations I have. I get a CDO error which instructs me to
install http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/office/outlctlx.cab
/default.aspx?scid=http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/office/out
lctlx.cab I have not had luck getting this to work. Does anyone have any
suggestions? The Outlook Team Folders Wizard doesn't seem to be available
any longer, or at least I haven't found it...
Thanks in advance.

I am trying to export my gal to a file . How can I
include the last logon to the mailbox in the .csv file? When I go into
Servers,Server,Priv,Mailbox Resources it show that detail. The only way to get
this info is to screen print it. Is there a way to capture this

No. Just the last time they physically
logged into the Exchange server.

If you want to look
at the last access time, go to Logons and check the column Last Access
Time.

1/2 of the W98 workstations I have. I get a CDO error which instructs me to

I guarantee you you've got another service out there using the same service account
with the old password. It will keep locking out your account until you get it
changed. My suggestion... change the password back to the old password and adjust the
services you know about to get it back running. Then do a detailed search of your
network to detect the offending service.

I learned this the hardway. Don't use your exchange service account for other
apps/services.

Hello All, I having an error pop up in exchange adminstrator when I try
to pull up someone's mailbox. The error message is: Extension'FUSEREXT'
could not be loaded. The specified module could not be found Microsoft
Windows NT ID no: 0xc002007e. We had just changed the service account
password and this error had popped up after we did that. I can click
ignore on the error, and it brings up the properties for the mailbox.
Then I try to change the primary windows NT account for the mailbox and
it says access denied. I then check the service account and it is
locked. Any ideas would be helpful.

SUCK!! SUCK I say! SUCK!

I
have gone to using the Filtered SMTP service for now instead of the Proxied
SMTP service. You will notice other email problems down the road as
well when using the SMTP proxy. Such
as other internet providers being unable to send you mail. This is
because the stupid a$$ SMTP proxy transforms the mail from 8bit to 7bit
among other things.

My

Just my $.02 mind you, but the WG FW SUCKS!!!

several folders and rules. Problem is sometimes rules wizard does not
work and messages pile at INBOX.

There is nothing wrong with the rules because when this happens, I
manually run the rules in the Inbox and messages are delivered to
correct folders.

Any idea why is this happening ?

RE: Outlook Team Calendars

2002-05-02 Thread Nikki Peterson - ITCX

I found that in our environment: OL2K SR-1 and SP2, IE5, XCNG 5.5

These worked very well. The only problems were with folks that had:

IE5.5 with NO SP's.
CDO was not installed
(never tested with 98)

We were all supposed to be up to IE5.5 SP2. The one's who couldn't use it
had a problem with not being up-to-date on the IE service packs. And CDO was
supposed to be on all machines.

This just uncovered a consistency problem with our clients...

I figured that it would probably be too good to be true, something that
would work that we wouldn't have to pay for. I had a design engineer
introduce Team Calendars to VPEngineering, and he loved it, but, can't get
them to work on his machine. VP, Well, it's working on Joe's machine, I
need it now. I've already suggested the fact that it's not exactly a
supported app, and we may need to purchase something that was built for our
uses... Don't you all love those users who introduce things that you can't
really provide?

A Bit Frustrated...

Does anyone have experience working with Team Calendars in Outlook 2000? I
have been instructed to implement Team Calendars, but the support at
Microsoft doesn't give me much to go on for troubleshooting. I've gotten
them to work on all W2K/Office 2K systems, but am having problems with about
1/2 of the W98 workstations I have. I get a CDO error which instructs me to
install http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/office/outlctlx.cab
/default.aspx?scid=http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/office/out
lctlx.cab I have not had luck getting this to work. Does anyone have any
suggestions? The Outlook Team Folders Wizard doesn't seem to be available
any longer, or at least I haven't found it...
Thanks in advance.

Happens to me all the time. Only after the Current folder highlight gets
stuck and I have to close outlook. This was a feature in 98 and is back

It will only happen when you first open.

Exchange newbie

2002-05-02 Thread John R. Clark III
Title: Exchange newbie

I am trying to upgrade an NT4.0 Exchange 5.5 sp6 server that is in use full time to a Windows 2000 Exchange 2000 machine.

The exchange 5.5 server has been used for some 5 years with no problems. The old server was misconfigured to with a different netbios name from mx record, with aliases in the user mailboxes.

I ran the exchange server migration wizard and migrated the messages to the new mailboxes without errors or warnings.

What I have and would like to know...

oldserver

netbios = some_name
dns = another_name.subnet.domain.edu
mx = mail.subnet.domain.edu

newserver

netbios = newname
dns = newname.subnet.domain.edu

I would like to move the mx record and start getting the mail delievered to the new server...am I going to have problems?

Is there a way to syncronize the 2 servers so that mail is delievered between to 2 servers to the old and new mailboxes?

I am afraid that I might miss some messages durring the mx record changeover and will need to syncronize them.

I am also worried about the mailbox rules people have defined.

so
I take you were not happy with your Watchguard box ;) Maybe you should
look at setting up a Linux firewall. Then you can modify it to your
heart's content.
I
understand that PIX has it's own set of idiosyncrasies when related to
email.

I have a theory on Watchguard firewalls. They SUCK!
SUCK! SUCK!! SUCK I say! SUCK!

I have gone to using the Filtered SMTP service for now instead of
the Proxied SMTP service. You will notice other email problems down
the road as well when using the SMTP proxy.
Such as other internet providers being unable to send you mail. This
is because the stupid a$$ SMTP proxy transforms the mail from 8bit to 7bit
  among other things.

My new PIX's have arrived and I can't wait to get them into
production and toss these POS Red boxes in the trash.

Just my $.02 mind you, but the WG FW SUCKS!!!

IssuesSubject: Removing Unknown SMTP/ESMTP Message
Headers/Keywords

We use a watchguard firewall
which, by default, removes all unkown SMTP headers and ESMTP
keywords. The following is a list of 41 headers and
keywordsthat have beenrejected by our firewall during the
past week. I am consideringadding some of these to the
firewall's list of known headers/keywords. I'm especially interested in the
security ramifications of adding these (we use Exchange 2000).
Does anyone know of a specific reasonTo/NotTo add
these?

RE: SMTP Error 550.5.7.1

2002-05-02 Thread Tom Teater

I have seen this occur when a remote IMAP user access
the exchange server through a PIX firewall. The PIX (by default) is configured
to use "MailGuard", and this will prevent the remote user from sending email.
(The error refers to "relaying denied" issue, as I recall.) Microsoft has posted
a Q article on their Knowledge Base regarding this, but I cannot remember the
particular article number.
We resolved this issue by using the following command on
our PIX: no fixup protocol smtp 25

There
may be other issues at play here - I'm only relating what we discovered on our
system.

Cheers...
 Tom

INbound IMC mail conversion processing SLOW

2002-05-02 Thread Rose, Adrian

Hi,

We have a dedicated IMC/MTA, top notch hardware etc..

NT 4 SP 6a Exchange 5.5 Sp4

CPU/MEM usage etc minimal however

We seem to have a problem with inbound IMC traffic being
converted to MSExchange format.

Sometimes conversion can take over 40 mins!

Once conversion has been completed and message is placed in
the 'MTS-IN' it is processed real quick and delivered.

Anybody had similar issues?
