RE: Exchange GAL

It's only useful in a handful of circumstances. It's not written in Cobalt,
Cobal, CObol, Cabal, Caval, Naval or Babel. It's just plain old VB, that's
Visual Basic. Code available - contact me of list, Matthew.

Is there anyway to export the GAL to a remote user that is using outlook

not attached to the exchange server to use any of the resources that are
setup on it. Any help would be appreciated

RE: Transition from Cobalt Qube 2 to Exchange 5.5

2002-05-21 Thread Crossan Hays

We will be connecting via a WAN link to their office. We don't have the
funds to buy another server. This will have to be sufficient. We have a
firewall that connects us to their office that gives us access to the common
drives and things of that nature. Also, our server is open for their access
via a firewall on their end. Looks like I need to do some reading on how to
do this and execute accordingly. Thanks

The PSTs will remain as they are... They will not be automatically imported
into the Exchange store, you will either have to do that manually for each
client station, or maintain them as a secondary store.

The easiest way to import the PSTs would be via EXMERGE. Set up the
Exchange mailboxes, prime them with a welcome message of some form, and
consolidate a copy of the PSTs into a single folder, naming them according
to the mailbox alias in Exchange (IOW, if user Joe Blow's alias is JBlow,
name his PST jblow.pst (case insensitive)). You can then automate the
import via EXMERGE. DEFINITELY read the docs beforehand and plan out what
will need to be done.

Alternately, each user can import the PST contents themselves. File |
Import, once their Exchange profiles are set up and their Exchange mailbox
is the primary delivery location.

What architecture are you looking at going to? Will your clients be
connecting via a WAN link to the external office? Is there anything keeping
you from bringing an Exchange server online in your area as a member of the
remote Exchange organization (different Site, but same Organization)?

preoccupation deals with the process of including the psts and the archived
folders that each computer currently has. Will all of these files become a
part of the new accounts on the Exchange box once the connection is made?
What will happen to the contacts that are in the psts? I am sure that many

system that the messages came from. I need some ideas to calm my bosses.

Verisign will take care of the renewal. The catch is the domain wasn't
originally registered with Verisign. It reminded me too much of the "long
distance wars" of a few years ago.

2)Call center support
This was a problem in the past, but I think they have updated their tech
database. We created the problem by moving a server to a different domain and
upgrading to 2K. During the move, the current cert expired. It was a situation
where the cert (not the request) had to be manually created. Second tier
support did this without a hitch. The struggle was getting past the call
support to get this done. It wasn't in their script so to speak. I guess that
is somewhat typical of most helpdesks.

Not really any serious bitch about them, but they do remind me of the Borg. :)

We love DirectNIC for managing domains. We have about 100 and they have

RE: Messages not arriving from particular addresses

2002-05-21 Thread Rob Wilcox

If 34 is a front-end server, you can't have mailboxes on it can you? Or
can you?

Thanks
Rob

PS Did you look at the IIS SMTP Logs from 34 and 35, you might have to
turn up the detail that is being logged because by default you don't get
very much.

I don't think you'd see the bounce in the server 35 log if the message
never cleared the initial SMTP dialog, which would be the case for an
RFC rejection of the MAIL FROM address.

At this point I'd suggest an analyzer which can display the smtp traffic
between 34 and 35.

Or, to further rule out things and confuse yourself, put a mailbox on
server 34 and see if the message comes in OK. Or bypass 34, having the
mail deliver directly to server 35.

Good luck.

Unfortunately 34 is, indeed, Exchange.

Plus, if server 35 (the mailbox server) was bouncing
the messages (for whatever reason), I should see the
fact that it was bouncing it. But there is nothing,
nada, like a void reaches out and swallows up this
guy's messages somewhere between Exchange Server 34
and Exchange Server 35 (both 2000 and both at SP2).

An even more fun aspect is that if [EMAIL PROTECTED]
sends to my Yahoo.com address, it arrives with no
problems at all. Bob also tells me that he is sending
to other businesses with no problem. Crazy crazy
crazy.

Thanks though!

to obtain a certificate from a certificate providing authority. Takes too
long. I gotta go out to his house this weekend.

It was bizarre because it had a delay around 11am and then it went
normal
again. It only happens to people already migrated in exchange 2000.

RE: Mailbox archiving/moving

2002-05-21 Thread William Lefkovics
Title: Message

My
archive is a few GB in several themed .pst files.  I have shied away from
.msg or .eml files as an archive.  I like being able to easily sort and
search by subject, sender, etc.

At
some point, file storage is not as readily or efficiently retrievable/sortable
as a database backend, even if it is .pst.

Now if
you scripted an import of the .msg files into a SQL2000 database, you'd have
something.

RE: Messages not arriving from particular addresses

2002-05-21 Thread Mike Rausch

Oooohhh, what a great idea. Should have though of it
myself.

I will move them to server 34 tonight. At least, if
they start getting the emails, I can narrow the
problem down to either the communication between
server 34 and 35, or server 35 itself.

It is so odd though, in the fact that it is only this
one guy, everything else seems dandy.

Thanks for idea.

RE: Messages not arriving from particular addresses

2002-05-21 Thread Carl Houseman

I don't think you'd see the bounce in the server 35 log if the message never cleared
the initial SMTP dialog, which would be the case for an RFC rejection of the MAIL FROM
address.

At this point I'd suggest an analyzer which can display the smtp traffic between 34
and 35.

Or, to further rule out things and confuse yourself, put a mailbox on server 34 and
see if the message comes in OK. Or bypass 34, having the mail deliver directly to
server 35.

Good luck.

Did you look at the queues on the Exchange 5.5 server, and see if the
mail is sat in a queue? Does the connector have some sort of schedule
associated to it? What happens when you send a mail from Exchange 2000

We have exchange 5.5 site containing an old exchange 5.5 server(where
all
mailbox are currently running) and exchange 2000 where we have all the
other test mailboxes in place. There seems to be a delay when sending
messages from a mailbox on exchange 5.5 to a mailbox on exchange 2000.
What is the reason for this? It takes over one hour before the message
can be recieved by the recipient mailbox. Any thoughts?

RE: Messages not arriving from particular addresses

2002-05-21 Thread Carl Houseman

This sounds like Bob has messed up his reply address. His mailbox is sending out a
MAIL FROM address (the address to which NDR's are sent) which

a. Has bad syntax RFC-wise
b. Due to (a) attempts to return the message undeliverable fail.

Now why do you see the message pass from from server 34 (front-end) to 35 (Exchange)
if the RFC syntax is bad? Well server 34 probably doesn't check for RFC compliance as
strictly as Exchange, and passes the message along. Server 35 rejects it but of
course server 34 can't get the NDR back to Bob.

I am of course assuming that server 34 is not Exchange. HTH.

Subject: Messages not arriving from particular addresses

I did a search and did not find anything on this, so I apologize if this
has been asked before.

Pertinent information: Exchange 2000 SP2 2 servers involved. A front-end
server we will call 34, and a mailbox server we'll call 35

We have 2 users experiencing the same issue. They do not recieve emails
from a specific email address.

1 user, we'll call Jim, does not recieve any mail sent from Bob (Bob is
outside the company). We'll say bob's email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Jim recieves email with no problem from 2 of Bob's coworkers
([EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]). Bob does not recieve a NDR. I
have Bob send a couple of test messages to myself and another user, we
receive nothing as well.

So in an effort to track down where these messages are disappearing I do a
message track. I track all messages that come from Bob's address, and are
sent to Jim in the last 12 hours. About 5 messages appear. I go ahead
and double-click one to get the details. It shows the message arriving at
server 34, getting processed, and then handed off to server 35. But when
I switch to track it on server 35 it has no record of it. I do a search
on the specific message ID and again, server 35 has no info on it.
Nothing in the Event Logs of either server. No NDR created. Nothing.
Queues on both servers are completely empty. It's like they are
disappearing in a black hole.

Has anybody seen anything like this before?

Anybody have any ideas on what else I can do to try and track this down?
It's bizarre.

delay when sending messages from exchange 5.5 to exchange 2000

2002-05-21 Thread Jimmy Dejesus

We have exchange 5.5 site containing an old exchange 5.5 server(where all
mailbox are currently running) and exchange 2000 where we have all the
other test mailboxes in place. There seems to be a delay when sending
messages from a mailbox on exchange 5.5 to a mailbox on exchange 2000.
What is the reason for this? It takes over one hour before the message
can be recieved by the recipient mailbox. Any thoughts?

Hmmm
... this does seem strange, have you looked at any of the q articles about
running exchange behind isa ?

Getting to the ports typically is the major part of the problem, and I
know it shouldn't matter but I recall in proxy 2.0 you had to change settings on
the proxy to allow incoming port 25. Whats the deal with reverse lookups and the
new RFCs? just tossing at straws. If you come in to an smtp server and it cannot
reverse lookup the ip to a domain name it may get held up. Also, we had some
queue problems, (Kevin members), and I went into DNS, Advanced, and wiped the
caching out and whala...

is setup to forward any email coming into [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (his old email

  this

  CABLE--->USR Cable modem--->ISA
  Firewall--->Hub--->Exchange 2000 Server

  we are using a
pop downloaded to download messages from datacruz and put them into
exchangewhich is working fine, the problem is with outgoing
mailE2k SMTP is setup to deliver mail itself no smart host.  All
email is in the "retry" state in the queuesand the queue's say "the remote server did not respond to a connection attempt" we
cannot figure this out, as to we were having this problem before but it
went away and im not sure what I did to fix it.  But it was working
and now its notthe weird part is that lets say he is sending email to
hotmail.com and the mx record for hotmail.com is mail.hotmail.com, he can
fully telnet into port 25 on mail.hotmail.com from the exchange boxwe

Is there anyway to export the GAL to a remote user that is using outlook

exchange server to bounce their mail to their ISP mailservers. So they are
not attached to the exchange server to use any of the resources that are
setup on it. Any help would be appreciated

check search sub folders, it doesn't let you? How would you conduct a
search through the entire hierarchy?

Hello.

We are currently experiencing problems with our OWA. The application will
fail and become inaccessible with the following message appearing on the
server screen; Inetinfo.exe Entry Point Not Found. The procedure entry
point ?HTMLEscapeW@@YGXPBGAAVCVirtualString@@K@Z could not be located in
the dynamic link library QUERY.dll

Once we click on the OK, the OWA service resumes. There are no entries in
the Event Viewer to assist us with this problem.

We are using Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT.

Thank you.

Messages not arriving from particular addresses

2002-05-21 Thread Mike Rausch

It's bizarre.

they aren't blocking the port because we can go into cmd, and run "telnet

how
can DNS be broken, when if we do a "telnet mail.domain.com 25" it resolves it to

Re: desktop?..

2002-05-21 Thread Matt Moore

I have seen KLEZ do this. You may be able to get to the desk top with some
remote control software. I've used Dameware. Then service pack it. It
took three hours for service pack 6a to load. Do you have an up to date
erd? Good backup?

Associating Exch2K mailboxes with NT4.0 accounts

2002-05-21 Thread Scott Yorga

Hi.
We have Exhange 2000 SP2, with no Exch5.5. We have 2 domains, one
Exch2K domain, and one NT 4.0 domain which trusts the Exch2K domain. For
legal reasons the Win2K domain cannot trust the NT4.0 domain.

We want to have Exch2K mailboxes accessible by users in the NT4.0
domain.

Is there a way to associate a mailbox in the Exch2K organization with a
userID in the NT4.0 domain? The only way we can make it work is to
introduce an Exch5.5 server into the Exch2K org, create an Exch5.5
mailbox (linked to an account in the NT4.0 domain) and let the ADC
replicate the mailbox to the Exch2K organization. We're trying to find
a way to make this work without having an Exchange 5.5 server in the
environment.

thanks,
Scott Y

Since you don't have a backup, if you've got another machine at the same SP level you

Also - are your Org and Site name absolutely identical

Subject: Strange OWA problem

I am using Direcway satellite to access the Internet and also use ICS to
share a couple of pc's. Direcway suggests using a proxy statement to
speed up web access. In tools, options, connections, lansettings. I check
use proxy server and go into advanced and enter the gateway
pc(192.168.0.1) and port 85 for http only. When i do this it does
dramatically speed up inet access but when i sign into owa after
entering my alias i get a white screen. If i disable this proxy setup it
works. anyone seen this. why would changing my local proxy have any
effect on my owa server at the office.

anyone.
thanks

Just a shot in the dark:
Are you certain, both your machines are SP3?  SP4 made some schema changes,
so if one of them is at 3 and one at 4, that may cause
problems.

Also - are your Org and Site
name absolutely identical to your production machine - I've run into that before
- a missing "." in the org name - D'OH !

You can edit the default value. On the average server, lowering the
number to 10 or 15 should have minimal performance effects.

RE: User Permissions

2002-05-21 Thread Rich, Dave

To force an update go to configuration, server, directory service - update
now, - do this on all servers to replicate changes.

The information store keeps a cache of directory permissions. It
refreshes this cache every 120 minutes by default. Permission changes
will take "up to" 120 minutes. This is configurable by registry entry.

  William,
Surprisingly, I've talked to a number of people
who still haven't grasped that concept. Most of the organizations were
smaller and didn't have dedicated email administrators, just people doing
the add/moves. Unfortunately, they don't read most of the documents about
Exchange 2000 and rely on broad articles by pulp magazines to decide in
which direction they will go. The unfortunate side affect of
Microsoft growing up as an "easy to use" desktop operating system is that
many managers think that all Microsoft products are easy to use. Microsoft
has changed a great deal since those days (as you well know) and you need
to have professionals to architect and run your applications.

I don't know why I'm pontificating this morning,
maybe it's the meeting I have to go to this afternoon with all the oxygen
  thieves.

RE: User Permissions

2002-05-21 Thread William Lefkovics

You can edit the default value. On the average server, lowering the
number to 10 or 15 should have minimal performance effects.
