Sent Items - oddity or by design?

2009-04-23 Thread Moss, Susan K
Outlook 2003 sp3 with the latest patches
Exchange 2003 sp2 with the latest patches
Windows 2003 sp2 - patched
Enterprise Vault 7.5 sp2

I don't know if this is by design of if somethings wrong with my
Exchange stores, but here's what's happening.

A couple staff here send All Staff messages, Bcc'ing everyone - but -
when they open the item from their Sent Items folder the Bcc list does
not show. If you choose "Actions ->Resend this message" you can see the
Bcc list. If you switch Outlook to Cached mode, you can see the list.
If you move or copy the item to a Personal Folder, you can see the list.
Lastly - if you archive the item (to Enterprise Vault) you can see the
list. This seems to happen only to messages with a very large Bcc list
- one or two people in the Bcc is not a problem.

No errors in the event logs, and it doesn't appear to be limited to a
particular store. Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Did some
recent patch change the way Exchange treats Bcc lists? Are my stores
corrupt? Is there any logging I can crank up to get more info? Anyone
else seen this?

I've googled and searched MS KB - the closest I've come is other reports
of the same thing with no answer or solution - along with many unrelated
reports, like "how do I view/print the Bcc of a message".

TIA!

Are you certain that this isn't an EV issue?

The only difference in how Exchange stores those lists is when a list exceeds
the capacity of a single database page, the page is turned into an LV list
instead of a simple data page. But that happens below the Outlook level.

As a matter of fact, yes - you can have more than one manager - but you
would add the "extra" managers (or security group) to the Security tab
and give them the Advanced permission "Write Members" on "this object
only" (from the properties tab in the Advanced permissions).

I shall check the security settings and see what they are set to.
Is there a list of specifi permissions that need to be set in order to

Joe,

If you select the option in ADUC that 'Manager can update membership
list' on the group object then that selected group manager should have
no issues adding/removing folks from within Outlook using the GAL.

We do it here all the time.

I have a director, who would like to manage their unit's distribution
list. By default, users don't have access to adding/removing members of
the list, through the GAL. I also know there is a way of setting this
up so that you can give someone rights to do this, but I can't seem to
think straight enough to remember where I saw it. Is it through
Outlook, as an admin, or is it on the backend somewhere?

Also, the director that I'm speaking of is not a technical person. Is
it wise to allow users this type of access?

Thanks,

An offline-defragmentation will not provide you the Exchange server performance

Offline-defragmentation is only useful to reclaim database whitespace, and
should only be performed if the physical database size is nearing or has
exceeded the amount of free disk space for which to adequately perform a
database restoration process, so that any internal whitespace can be reclaimed
as free disk space.

Online-defragmentation otherwise provides internal defragmentation without
altering overall database file size. Unused database space is managed
internally as whitespace available for new data to be written to without also
having to expand the physically database size in the process.

2007 EMC and EMS barf under this condition too.

Exchange runs re-discovery (AD Topology Mapping) every 15 minutes. When you
start EMS or EMC (actually, when you create a PowerShell RunSpace that includes
the Exchange snap-ins, if you wanna get technical) a variable called
$AdminSessionADSettings is created that defines which DCs and GCs to use. If it
changes, just restart the session. (You can manually update the variable too in
EMS, but it's generally easier to restart the session.)

Problem with Meeting room resource.

2009-04-23 Thread Kevan Dickinson
Hi

We use meeting rooms as a resource (As I presume many of you do) to
allow people to book meeting rooms via there Outlook Calandar when
scheduling meetings.

We have had a user access a meeting room calandar directly and book a
private appointment. Because the meeting has been booked as Private no
one can see who has booked the room.

1) I need to know who has booked it.

2) I need to stop this happening in the future.

We don't mind people viewing the meeting room calandars directly but
they must not be able to book them directly.

What permisions should I have on the meeting room mailbox that will
allow people to view and book meeting rooms as a resourcethrough their
Outlook when scheduling a meeting but not be able to edit / book the
meeting by directly opening the meeting room calandar via Outlook
Calandar, File > Open other Peoples Folder > Calandar.

Can anyone help please?

This may have been discussed before, but I'm in a pinch. I have a user
who is a developer and I want to restrict his e-mail to only send mail
to internal users, no external mail. I'm ok with him receiving external
e-mail; he just won't be able to reply. This is exchange 2003 in a W2k3

Re: Restricting outbound mail

2009-04-23 Thread Sean Martin
We've been using the same process for quite some time with no issues. The
only difference is we block everyone, except for members of a specific
group. It didn't appear to be mentioned in the article, but I believe one
best practice is to ensure you do not nest groups within the group you're
using to accept/reject e-mail from.

Before I go out and write one again. Does anyone have a canned
response that I can send to a customer who asks " to increase server
performance I want to perform an offline defrag of all of the databases

I HIGHLY recommend using ERM (Exchange Resource Manager).
I believe it is free if you only need to monitor 2 resources.

Regards

Third party Spamfilter for Outlook 2007

2009-04-23 Thread David Baca
I thought i would pass this email on to see if anyone at sunbelt had a answer
for how to deal with this.

In addition to our corporate spam gateway, I’ve been
using a local spamfilter for a partner called iHatespam for a few years. The
product is great.
However, the latest version (the only one supporting Office
07) uses a different method of scanning email for spam. IHateSpam version 4
used heuristic methods while IHateSpam version 5 scans using a Global Rating
Scan, there are no local definitions stored. The Enemies/Block list is no
longer a feature therefore, I can’t use the list of email addresses collected
over the years.
Do you know or use a similar product which has an option to
import blocklist and actually works well? (The built in Outlook filter has a
limit
which constantly produces a pop-up reminding you of this fact).

Identify Senders to a Domain?

2009-04-23 Thread Roger Wright
We have 4 domains on our Exchange 2003 server and most mailboxes have
addresses for all 4 domains. We wish to drop a couple of those domains
but don't want to risk not receiving messages from senders who may still
be using those old addresses. We'd prefer to notify specific senders of
the new addresses before dropping those domain names.

Is there a simple way to query via ESM Message Tracking Center to see
who may be sending to those domains over the past 90 days or so?
