Blackberry devices Push Email

2010-05-28 Thread Ellis, John P.
A quick question.
Can a Blackberry device such as a BB Bold 9700 support push email
without having a BES server, maybe using the BB equivilant of
ActiveSync?
We have a few a Windows/Symbian based devices that have push email to
the phones. The Windows based ones use ActiveSync and SSL cert and the
Symbian ones use Mail For Exchange and a SSL cert

Thanks

Hi John,

We support a few users who uses a program called BlackBerry Desktop
Redirector to do just this. I think it needs to be running all the time and
therefore ties up the user's workstation, but if you can live with this then
enjoy...

Kind regards,

Andrew

BIS is Blackberry Internet Service. It will sync via your OWA portal.
BES express is free so $$ shouldn't be an issue any more if that's

BIS is actually handled by Rim and works with your phone carriers. It's a
portal you login to and setup your connection or you can configure Internet
email right on your phone. It in turns polls the mail servers and then
delivers the email to your phone. It works perfectly with OWA on Exchange 2003
- 2010. No additional charges other than how your carrier charges for Internet
usage. Also pop services..
www.blackberry.com/go/vzw for example

BES Express, latest version. Is completely free. If you have an Exchange
server you can install it on your server or a separate server and it will sync
all contacts/calendar/emails/tasks. You must have your blackberry provisioned
for BES services by the cell carrier. Some charge for this; others include it.
Bes professional 4.x charged 99.00 per blackberry that is no longer the case in
bes express version 5.

Actually with the BES Express some carriers allow you to use the BIS
plans instead. This was a new change with the Express version only.
T-Mobile allows you to use a BIS plan but you won't get OTA activations
for your devices, they would need to be connected to the server. I know
Verizon does require you to have a Enterprise plan even if you use the
BES Express server.

BES does that. You need to make sure wireless synch is enabled for the
email account on the Blackberry.

One caveat though is that if you delete it from the mailbox, it can take
a bit to delete from the phone. But it will remove it.

For BIS, in the portal there is to Synchronize deleted items from mailbox and
phone...or something to the like. On the phone you have to go to email options
and make sure that the delete on option is set to mailbox and handheld.
BIS will then delete messages from outlook that you have deleted on your phone.
FYI this requires connecting with an exchange url not pop3.

RE: Blackberry devices Push Email

2010-05-28 Thread Simon Butler
ActiveSync is available for the Blackberry, but it is a third party
implementation. AstraSync or NotifySync are the two main players in that arena.

If you are using the Blackberry with a BES, either BES or BES Express then you
just need to change the option in the handset to delete the email on the
mailbox as well as the handset.
If you are using BIS only, then no, because it effectively a poll only - like
Pop3.

A quick question.
Can a Blackberry device such as a BB Bold 9700 support push email
without having a BES server, maybe using the BB equivilant of
ActiveSync?
We have a few a Windows/Symbian based devices that have push email to

Symbian ones use Mail For Exchange and a SSL cert

I'm curious - since your BB can be set to cycle out mail after a specific time
why do you delete messages off it at all? Do you not get to your Outlook often
enough to manage your mail? I can't tell you how many times I've had to do mail
restores for C level ID10Ts that accidentally deleted the wrong message(s) on
their BB and came crying to us to that they had messages mysteriously
disappear out of their mailbox. Support nightmare having that setting.

BES does that. You need to make sure wireless synch is enabled for the email
account on the Blackberry.
One caveat though is that if you delete it from the mailbox, it can take a bit
to delete from the phone. But it will remove it.

RE: Not all headers included when forwarding as attachment

2010-05-28 Thread Joe Pochedley
Michael,

To pick a fine point I wanted to say that I wasn't arguing with you
specifically about the feature or Outlook. Though my last couple statements
may have veered that direction, those weren't specifically directed at you.
(Sorry if there was misunderstanding.)

My main argument was about your statement that Outlook retains 100% fidelity
on the RFC defined headers. I think I've shown that Outlook may not maintain
100% fidelity on forwarded headers in all cases. As such, your statement,
while accurate within the context of the original recipient, is not accurate in
the context of forwarded mail. Since the original discussion was regarding
forwarding messages, I chose to view your comment in that context where it is
not accurate... Maybe the statement should be that Outlook retains 100%
fidelity on the RFC defined headers when viewed from the original destination
mailbox, but only 99% fidelity when messages are forwarded with full headers
intact. :)

Peace.

Joe you are arguing with the wrong person. I have no vested interest in this
either way.

I argued against the named property change, but I lost. The reality is that it
would tend to cause Exchange I/O to be higher when the driver in 2007 and 2010
was to get it as low as possible. The decision is made and the functionality
has been ripped out of the store. I don't expect it ever to come back.

I know how Outlook works at the MAPI level, I know why it works that way (for
many but not all things - I do understand address resolution in detail though),
but I have nothing to do with the decision tree of how/why
features/functionality get implemented or not.

Outlook 14 (2010) is locked and loaded. There may be a minor number of new
features in future service packs, but core functionality won't change. Your
best bet is to get on the TAP/Alpha/whatever for OL 15 and plead your case with
the OL team then.

Subject: RE: Not all headers included when forwarding as attachment

Michael,

I have to take exception to the statement that Outlook retains 100% fidelity on
the RFC defined headers. In multiple tests I observed Outlook change the
original To: header line when forwarding an email to an external source.

While the argument could be made that both addresses are correct from an
original destination mailbox standpoint, the fact is that the SMTP To:
address was changed in the forwarded headers. Hence 100% fidelity was not
maintained on the RFC defined To: - Destination Address Field.
(http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5322#section-3.6.3) .. Note that I didn't
test whether a similar issue happens with Cc: and Bcc: fields too...

Since the incoming mail flow path is different for our org depending on the
actual To: address, this could lead to some really confusing situations in
trying to troubleshoot a delivery problem if headers get mangled during the
troubleshooting process...

I agree with Jason in that Outlook should *not* touch the internet headers on
forwarded messages. This is a poor decision on Microsoft's part.

You don't have to pay to make bug reports. You ask for a non-dec and they give
it to you. However, you do have to offer a CC up front.

Outlook retains 100% fidelity on RFC headers and on pre-existing NAMED
PROPERTIES. MAPI maintains 100% fidelity on transport headers at incoming
bridgehead (hub) but since Internet named properties are no longer propagated
by default as of Exchange 2007 sp2, Outlook 2010 doesn't try to either. That
behavior may have been introduced as of Outlook 2007 sp2, you might want to
check with an Outlook MVP.

The easiest solution, I believe, would be to create an Internet named property
for your mailbox databases for the headers in question. There is information on
how to do that at msexchangeteam.com; there are a number of posts on that blog
from last year about named property behavior changes. I think I blogged about
it too; I can't remember. Ah yes, here we go:

You guys are most likely running the RTM/SP1 ver of the tools.
In a SP2 there is a blocker so you cannot install the tools on Win7.
While there are always ways to hack the tools in it will be unsupported

You can do an in-place upgrade to Win7 and get the tools – but they aren’t
 supported.

You can install either RTM or SP1 of the tools – but they aren’t supported.

BIS is actually handled by Rim and works with your phone carriers. It's
a portal you login to and setup your connection or you can configure
Internet email right on your phone. It in turns polls the mail servers
and then delivers the email to your phone. It works perfectly with OWA
on Exchange 2003 - 2010. No additional charges other than how your
carrier charges for Internet usage. Also pop services..
www.blackberry.com/go/vzw for example

BES Express, latest version. Is completely free. If you have an
Exchange server you can install it on your server or a separate server
and it will sync all contacts/calendar/emails/tasks. You must have your
blackberry provisioned for BES services by the cell carrier. Some
charge for this; others include it.
Bes professional 4.x charged 99.00 per blackberry that is no longer the
case in bes express version 5.

BIS is Blackberry Internet Service. It will sync via your OWA portal.
BES express is free so $$ shouldn't be an issue any more if that's
what's stopping you from running a BES server.

John,

The latest version of BIS supports this. My Bold 9700 is able to
send/receive email from one of my Exchange servers without being on BES.

Thanks
