ex07 pf replication

2010-08-30 Thread Lists - Level5
We are migrating away from an SCR 2007 cluster to a single vm box for our
mailbox database. We have 4 DB's and have been moving mailboxes over the
past several weeks. Our PF DB is about 40GB. When I looked at all the PF's
they had a replication of the new server, and all the stores were set to
point to the new server and everything was fine.

When I went to decommission the server I noticed that the entire PF db on
the new server was still at 0 even though everyone had it listed as their PF
for the database. I tried doing the moveallreplicas.ps1 script and waited a
day, and I see all kinds of event logs about incoming message replication ,
processing message but the new server still showing 0 messages.

What made it worse was after the script people this morning said all the PFs
were empty, so I repointed the DB to the old server and re-ran the
moveallreplicas.ps1 back to the old server they are good now, but Im not
sure of what Im missing.

Thanks for reading my long winded post J

I recommend that you:

Adding Members from Account Forest to Resource Forest

2010-08-30 Thread Chris Pohlschneider
Hello,

I am trying to add members from an Account Forest to an Exchange 2010 Resource
Forest Distribution Group. We currently have no GAL sync utility and I cannot
find the correct command on how to do this (if it is even possible). I have
been able to successfully add a user account from the account forest to have
permissions on a "resource mailbox" in the Exchange 2010 resource forest using
the following command:

Add-MailboxPermission -identity "resource mailbox" -AccessRights
ReadPermission,FullAccess,ExternalAccount -user "Account forest domain\user"
-Inheritancetype all

The users that I am trying to add have not been migrated to the new Exchange
Server yet and that is why I am trying to find this workaround. I have no
problems adding members that have already been migrated to the new Exchange
2010 resource forest. Trying to use a cmdlet like the following below and it
keeps failing. Any help or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

Add-DistributionGroupMember -Identity "Distribution Group" -ExternalAccount

2010-08-30 Thread Chris Pohlschneider
Michael,

I don't think you can do this in 2003 ADUC because we created a domain local
test distribution group and added the distribution group from the account
forest to this test distribution group. Nothing shows up in the GAL on the new
Exchange 2010 server. I think that is because anything you do Exchange related
is to be done from the Exchange 2010 server. I saw a couple of things about
creating contacts to get around this, but I was hoping not to do extra work.
When you brought up the suggestion long ago about a Gal Sync utility, I
researched this and suggested to management that we should get a utility that
will sync the GAL's. However, they denied it. I guess until the right person
feels the pain of dealing with these types of issues during the migration, I
will have to find work arounds for everything a GAL sync utility would do for
us.

Thanks,

Chris

Sorry, answered my own question by looking at your blog a second time:

"There is some question about why these fixes aren't available on WSUS or
Microsoft Update; and the answer is simple: these are not security related
fixes, *they are not Exchange fixes*, and they will not affect every single
Microsoft server installation. However, they *are* known to affect Exchange
and thus need to be installed on Exchange servers."

2010-08-30 Thread Level 5 - Lists
Thanks, I will try that. Last time I looked about 3 weeks ago SP3 didn't
show up on windows update although I saw many people talking about it.

Im already forced to restore from backup because somewhere along the line I
now have several folders with 0 items that had thousands, not all folders
just some .. using pfdavadmin shows me no deleted items and reflects the
same item counts .

I have to wait until after hours to take the PF DB offline since RSG seems
to only work with mailboxes (something I did not know previously).

So it looks like that moveallreplicas script really screwed the pooch for me
this time, I did use it a few times before without incident FWIW

We are migrating away from an SCR 2007 cluster to a single vm box for our

past several weeks.

2007 server and sending mail. There are some domains where the mail will
not be sent. Other domains are just fine. I have done the RBL thing via
MXToolbox, and we are not listed on any of the lists they cover. Checked for
any solutions to possible grey listing, and come up with no answers there
other than that Exchange can handle it. Black hole routers seemed a
possibility, but if the server is restarted, all mail in the queues goes
out, which pretty much rules out an MTU problem. DNS problems were
suggested, but I do not think that is a problem as mail goes out after a
restart, the internal DNS is located on another server, The initial
connection with the SMTP servers receiving mail is successful, and pinging
here, there, everywhere by name returns an IP and usually returns a
successful result for the ping.

Near as I can determine, this is the end of the failed transactions:
MAIL FROM: SIZE=20007,
RCPT TO:,
250 2.5.0 Address and options OK.,
421 4.4.2 Timeout while waiting for command.,
QUIT,

Using TELNET to send to the problem domains is a crap shoot. Sometimes it
works, other times it times out as above.

Remember, this only happens with some domains, not all. I can send to AOL,
but not Verizon.net. I can send to Gmail, but not to the domain of one of
our customers. A restart of the server, not a restart of services, will
resolve the issue for a period of time, but not more than a few hours. This
is hard to tell, since we never know what domains we will have problems
with, though Verizon (who is also our Internet and phone provider, seems to
be a constant).

ActiveSync with Windows Mobile

2010-08-30 Thread Cameron Cooper
Newbe with ActiveSync here...

We are setting up a user for ActiveSync with a Windows Mobile phone and
when sync'ing we get the following error: 0x85010001.

System Specs:

- Exchange server 2003 (only one server)

- We use RSA SecurID with OWA and have SSL required/enabled

- OMA is not set to use RSA SecurID

Has anyone else used ActiveSync with RSA? Would I need to create
another Virtual Directory?

Exchange 2010 RDP/Powershell issue

2010-08-30 Thread Jim Slattery
Just checking to see if anyone else has had this issue:

When I run a get-mailbox shell command/script, one of my databases doesn't
reply with data. This happens if I run it without an argument or if I try to
specify the database.

Without an argument, I get results from my other two databases, but not the one
in question. When I do specify the database, the return is empty with no error
message. Also, the EMC does list all users in all databases. Anyone seen or
experienced this, or have a suggestion where I should be looking? I'd normally
be thinking RDP communication issues, but with no errors, I'm a bit lost.

TIA for any assistance,

Thanks Michael, I figured it would be done under the current maintenance
schedule which is now set for 1 am to 5 am. Its late, I'll reconnect the

How long should it take from the time a user account is deleted before it
shows up as a disconnected mailbox in Exchange 2007? Whatever process that is,
is there a way to manually start it?

Multiple databases?

2010-08-30 Thread Steve Hart
I'm setting up a new server on Exchange 2007 SP3. We have 120 mailboxes ranging
in size from 2.5 GB down to nothing. 3 TB of hard drive space.

Do you see an advantage in using multiple storage groups and databases?

RE: Multiple databases?

2010-08-30 Thread Campbell, Rob
The biggest advantage to splitting it up will be how fast you can get it back
online in a DR situation.

If you keep the databases on separate backup tapes, you can multi-thread the
restore and have everything back online a lot faster.

RE: Multiple databases?

2010-08-30 Thread Joseph Heaton
Absolutely. Recovery time should be your BIG focus when determining how big
you want to allow your databases to get. I know with 2010, in a DAG, they say
you can go as high as 2TB per database, but only 100GB if they are standalone
databases. Not sure about 2007.

Exchange 2010 Client Access Array question

2010-08-30 Thread Joseph Heaton
Hoping someone here can answer this:

We are setting up Exchange 2010 in our lab, in preparation to migrating to it
sometime in the near future. I just finished setting up the DAG, with 2
interfaces, one for MAPI traffic, and one for DAG traffic. Now, I'm moving on
to the CAS array. Our thoughts are to have the same setup, one interface for
client access traffic, and one for the cluster traffic. Is this the
recommended method? Or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

One other question to this:

The IP that I create a host record for, in the initial steps of setting up the
CAS array; is that the FQDN that all clients, internal and external, will be
connecting to? i.e. is that the FQDN that my OWA users will be typing in their
address bars to connect?

RE: Exchange 2007 Send Issues

2010-08-30 Thread Steve Szabo
That's what I was going to do this morning-update the NIC driver if a newer
one was available and it was. Not only a Monday, but a first day back after
vacation. I updated just before I had to run out of the office and it looks
like it went OK. I just sent a message through to test, and the message went
right out, and none were hanging in the queues. But time will tell if this
does the trick.

Based on the fact that a reboot temporarily fixes the issue I would look at:

NIC firmware / driver

Firewall

packet sniffing after a reboot until failure

We have been having a problem the last couple of weeks with our Exchange
2007 server and sending mail. There are some domains where the mail will not
be sent.
