RE: Orphaned exchange 2007 server.

2010-11-10 Thread Sobey, Richard A
Remember the installer for Exchange is fully contained in each Service Pack so
you should be able to download just the appropriate SP to get going with
/RecoverServer.

I really wouldn't go messing in adsiedit unless you don't need the server any
more and all other options are exhausted..

I'm trying to currently rebuild a 2007 multi role server which was rebuilt
without removing exchange properly and we haven't got the correct version of
exchange to install so it won't let me do a recovery on the server.

I tried editing the serial number in adsiedit but it still wanted the newer
version. If I remove the server object entirely in adsiedit will this be
enough to allow me to do a fresh install?

RE: Orphaned exchange 2007 server.

2010-11-10 Thread Steve Szabo
As has been mentioned, you just need to download the appropriate SP and use
that for the DR install. I ran into the same problem a few weeks ago (along
with a slew of others). If you post the version that it is looking for, the
error message should have it, one of these bright minds here will be able to
tell you which SP it is looking for.

We have a sister company that implemented it and they haven't complained
at all. Pretty quick to install and set up. Users were removed from my
full BES and activated on their BESx and can't tell the difference.
Whole lot faster than using BIS or Http. And yes put it on it's own

Yes BESx can be put on your exchange box but there's plenty of arguments

RE: BESx?

Express is free other than tariff costs to have a Blackberry. Regarding where
to install it, my understanding is you can install it on the Exchange box for
less than 75 users, but it's recommended to use a dedicated box regardless
(apparently "reboot the BES" is quite a commonly proffered solution to problems
but that's anecdotal).

MS Support on VMware?

2010-11-10 Thread Phil Hershey
Under what conditions, if any, will MS support Exchange 2010 on VMware
vSphere? Our current Exchange 2003 is running on an IBM blade/NetApp
iSCSI SAN on ESX 3.0.2, and performance sucks. Unfortunately the 'let's
virtualize it' flu is running rampant here, although my vote is to take
the Exchange system physical (~450 users and 500GB in EDB, STM, LOG
files).

Thanks.

Philip

RE: BESx?

2010-11-10 Thread Paul Hutchings
Just to throw one out there, we're looking at Blackberry right now though it's
currently not past the "let's see if we can get some on loan" stage.

Can anyone throw anything at me from the BES Express perspective that is either
spectacularly good or spectacularly bad?

We're just looking to do the "usual things" and have some management of our
mobiles - I don't think right now that we want to get especially control freaky.

Under what conditions, if any, will MS support Exchange 2010 on VMware vSphere?
Our current Exchange 2003 is running on an IBM blade/NetApp iSCSI SAN on ESX
3.0.2, and performance sucks. Unfortunately the 'let's virtualize it' flu is
running rampant here, although my vote is to take the Exchange system physical

Not sure thats the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the
truth..

There are some specific exceptions for Exchange in Virtual.

1) Mixing Database Availability Groups and VMWare availability tools
(e.g. HA) is not supported. I guess the issue is that the database may
fail over while the machine is being migrated. See the blog some one
else has just posted. This makes designing a supported solution
"interesting" because it would be nice to have your "Live/production"
database server in a VMWare cluster for hardware resilience and have a
second standby server on another site for disaster recovery. This is
unsupported.

To be supported you must put TWO virtual servers in the local VMWare
farm and exclude them from HA and have a third at your disaster recovery
site.

2) The Unified Messaging role is not supported in virtual.

RE: MS Support on VMware?

2010-11-10 Thread Dave Wade
Possibly but I thought it a valid question and worth pondering
on

I suspect that the existing performance sucks because iSCSI SAN can't
deliver the IOPS Exchange 2003 needs. Our main Exchange servers are
Exchange 2003 still on real boxes and performance is generally "Ok(ish)"
but we have dedicated raid arrays in a Fibre connected the SAN for both
the logs and databases. When the Raid Groups were shared with other high
performance servers we did get performance issues. I suspect if Phillip
downloads the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant (TSA)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=4bdc1d6b-de3
4-4f1c-aeba-fed1256caf9a&displaylang=en

and runs it it will help him understand why the existing server
performance sucks. Until he understand what's wrong with the existing
system he won't know if moving forward will cure it or kill it. So if
the TSA reports no issues on the Exchange boxes then it could be network
issues are causing the slow down.

We also run an Exchange 2007 system for our school staff in Virtual
(VmWare 4.0u1) but with an Hitachi Fibre SAN with dedicated Raid-10
drives for the mail box stores. In general performance is OK but it did
graunch a tad when we were migrating data.

I am about to start migrating the 2003 boxes to 2010 and don't really
expect too many issues with performance, but I did stick an extra 16Gb
of RAm in the VMWare hosts I am going to use.

One "problem" with Exchange 2007 and 2010 and VMware is that they
reduced the disk performance needs by using "large" amounts of RAM as
disk cache. So when you stick them in VMWare you need to make sure you
have enough free RAM for Exchange to use So I think some of my
managers are going to miffed when I say they can't get 10 x Exchange
Mailbox Servers with 7000 users on each in a the size of VMWare box they
are currently buying. (But I will now let them use most of the disk
space).

Thanks to all that replied with info. Very, very helpful, since MS
disagrees with the 'official' VMware position that was presented to us.
And the original question was researched for a while, but as usual
checking here for informed, practical opinions was more efficient as I
hadn't found the Exchange Team blog.

RE: MS Support on VMware?

Thanks, Dave. I expect a large part of the reason our performance is so
poor is that we haven't had the ability to dedicate spindle sets on our
NetApp to Exchange or the SQL servers either. These each get a blade of
their own natively running the OS/app (not virtualized), but they're all
sharing just a couple of 'aggregates' between a number of machines that
are shared with 4 blades running ESX 3.0.2 and hosting a number of
'small' servers. Of course the NetApp vender said this would be just
fine. Horse-hockey. I'll definitely be running the TSA as soon as I can

Not knowing your configuration in detail leads to more questions than
answers. But, a properly configured ESX/iSCSI setup will absolutely
scream. I have yet to virtualize our Exchange environment but our SQL
server performance increased at least 50% on average when we went from
direct attached Ultra 320 SAS drives in a raid 10 config to our EQ SAN
with SATA's. The physical box and ESX Host were identical servers. And
that was mostly because of increased spindles and a whole lot more cache
on the controllers. I know it's like comparing apples to oranges with
your environment but generally speaking there's best practices for ESX
and iSCSI no matter who your vendor is. EQ has some excellent white
papers for properly configured VM Exchange servers using iSCSI with MPIO
inside the guest. And the examples they test are running 5000 users per
guest with varying mail store sizes. I'm sure IBM does to. And
starting with ESX 4 you can do MPIO with your iSCSI storage at the Host
level which is suppose to increase performance also.

generated messages (such as NDRs) or automated replies (such as OOOs) are
being blocked. The NDRs copied to me indicate *#5.1.1 SMTP; 550
Blocked *reported
from my upstream gateway. Am I missing something obvious in the Barracuda
config that would result in this behavior? Barracuda support was supposed to
remote into the box today and poke around but I haven't heard back from the
SE assigned. I've already tried the following options:

Allow Empty Inbound Sender Domain
Allow Empty Outbound Sender Domain
Disable Sender Spoof Protection
Disable Check SPF for Bounce Recipients

RE: BESx?

2010-11-10 Thread greg.sweers
The case for Blackberries over Iphone/Droid/WM currently is pretty straight
forward.

1.Security on the phone is hardened. Its tried/trued.

2. Management. There is nothing you cannot control about a Blackberry
from the tools. Droid, Iphone, WM, you have some semblance but not even close
to a Blackberry

3. Activation. Its easy. Ensure your provider has it provisioned. They
receive it, create the account on the BES box, give them a password or send it
to their email through the tools and walk them through it. Done. Very hands
off. Send one to the other side of the world and a monkey can activate it.

4. If you need to access files/folders or web sites on the same network
as the BES server without complicating VPN's etc. They can do it all from the
phone. Web access is built right in, files/folders takes some config work on
the BES box.

5. Wipe and ensure your data is gone. Cant guarantee that with any of
the other phones. If it gets the kill, it's a brick..

6. Downsides. Management..Server resources..Another app to babysit, when
it breaks..It breaks big..in my experience.

7. Free software, no cals required, free installation support, optional
tech support contract, does 90% of what you want to do. Big Daddy BES does
things with MDS, apps, tracking of SMS messages, "compliance things mostly"
etc..Things most of our SMB's don't deal with.

Saying all that we have 8 clients on BESx moved from SMB edition or
Professional. Very little issues overall.

I'll concur. I reboot my BES about 3 times as often as the Exchange server.

I have heard conflicting feedback the BESX does not have to be on separate box

We have a sister company that implemented it and they haven't complained at
all. Pretty quick to install and set up. Users were removed from my full BES
and activated on their BESx and can't tell the difference. Whole lot faster
than using BIS or Http. And yes put it on it's own machine or VM.

Hi folks,

Has anyone out there deployed Blackberry Express? Yes, the free version of BES.
