DS_E_INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_RIGHTS

2002-07-23 Thread MJohnston
Title: DS_E_INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_RIGHTS

I have a friend who is having a problem with his Exchange 5.5, SP2 server. The admin left and someone deleted his account instead of just disabling it and/or changing the password. Now only administrators can see the GAL. I think the problem is that the search permission is set, but when he goes into the administrator program to change it, he gets this error:

You do not have the permissions required to complete this operation.
DS_E_INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_RIGHTS

He's logged on as the Exchange service account admin and everything else is working except access to the GAL - can't see it can't resolve names.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've been looking on Google and MS and haven't really come up with anything. Also, I don't know if this makes any difference, but the Exchange server is also a BDC.

TIA, MJ

I would be careful about bringing down the hammer. She doesn't know what the workload of the department is like and there may be other higher priority items the IT staff is working on. The best way to prevent someone from forgetting is to put it in writing - send an email or submit a help desk ticket, whatever the company uses. When stopped in the hall about a problem, I always tell the user to send me an email so I don't forget to take care of the problem. It's not that I have a bad memory, but I have a million other things I'm working on. If she makes another attempt at getting her problem solved without success, then she can escalate. I wouldn't be too quick to jump to conclusions.

Just my opinion, of course.

This is a query on protocol.

My girlfriend calls me and tells me that her Outlook has lost several
personal calendar items. This caused a double-booking of conference
rooms and much pain and suffering. She is on a Mac with Outlook and I
would imagine the servers are Win2K/Exchange 2K but I'm not certain.

At any rate, she tells the helpdesk people that she is missing items
among other things. They come look at it, shrug their shoulders and say
they'll be back later. They never return. In fact, she calls them and
they forgot all about her problem. (Others have this problem as
well.) I don't know about you but if someone tells me something is
missing from an email DB, I get right on it to figure out the issue
(which is usually larger than just a few things missing).

I told her that this is NOT acceptable IT protocol. I would like to
think that a smooth network is one where workstations and servers are
humming, no one has problems with the equipment or software, backups are
working, and security is tight. Am I wrong here? Am I overreacting
when I tell her that she needs to bring down the hammer on these
so-called network professionals?? She is in no position to do anything
but complain to her boss who doesn't seem to care much...

Your thoughts...

Sounds
like you are doing a migration, not an upgrade. We are in the process of
migrating everything from the 5.5 box to a new W2k/E2k box and our 5.5 server is
on SP4 and I have not had any problems thus far. Perhaps the SP3
requirement only applies to an in-place upgrade? Check out the MS Exchange
site. There is lot of useful information in the deployment guide including
step-by-step how-to instructions for the tasks you have to perform. You
just need to wade through all the stuff that the little guys like us are not
going to do, like creating a team of 20 different people, taking the network
admin out to lunch, etc. If you are like us, you are the network admin, the
exchange admin, the security admin, and any other admin you can come up with.
;-)

The
TechNet CDs have a ton of info on upgrading/migrating to E2k as
well.

I think you are doing it correctly. When you make that change, it should
dismount the store, move it and remount.

The .stm file is the streaming version of the Information store.

This local drive is not the M:\ drive, is it?

  Why
not add the second domain to your existing Exchange server (different

1. Just use the email of the person in the department you want to receive the resumes.
2. We could create a few distribution lists (for running multiple jobs at once) and
they can add and remove users at will.
3. They could set up rules on the current mailbox to route based on job posting number
or some other piece of information.

I don't like the idea of creating an email address every time they do a job posting.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had to deal with a similar situation and if you
found a workable solution.

I agree with you and that's how they are currently doing it - single mailbox that
someone checks. I guess they are SOO overworked up there, that they just don't
have the time to continue doing it this way. ;-)

I agree. I don't like that idea either. But now they are reaping what they
sew, and it sounds like they don't want to do THEIR jobs.

Instead of doing any forwards or CRs, just create a single mailbox. Put
everything in there, and tell them how to open it to read mail. Then they
can do it at their convenience.

Running Exchange 5.5, SP4 on NT4 SP6a.

Our HR department currently has an email address set up for job postings so
people can email their resume. They are getting so many that they no longer
want to process them. What they want to do is create a new email address for
each posting that would go to the appropriate person in the department with

Well as stated already you do need to have an AD environment. However
you can upgrade your domain to AD, Install the ADC to sync your Exchange
5.5 server with AD. Then install the temporary Exchange 2k server into
the same Organization as your Exchange 5.5 system. Move the Mailboxes.
Redo you Current server (OS, and Exchange2k with new name or same name)
and then move the mailboxes back.

We didn't have an NT 4 domain to start with but we did have an exchange
5.5 server in our W2k Domain and this is how I upgraded to Exchange 2k.
I didn't do an inplace upgrade because I wasn't sure how well it would
work and I felt this was safer.

Exchange 2k does not work with out and AD win2k. Until you upgrade your
PDC to Win2k you don't have to worry about Exchange 2k. Exchange will
also not install on a workstation.

The only way what you want to work to happen would be with Exmerge. The

Will The Ed Crowley Server Move Method -

build a new server and then move the mailboxes and public folders to the

According to the Antigen documentation, it checks the file header to
determine the type, not the extension. So if you want to block all EXE
programs, you put in a file name of *.* and a file type of EXE and it will block
all EXE programs no matter what name or extension.

Antigen is (currently) not checking the type of the

You could install an additional product like MailMarshal or
MimeSweeper to catch renamed files like this. They also have the ability to
do an AV-Scan...
They act as a Mail-Server in front of your exchange box and will
forward the mails according to your rules to the exchange

If
on the same server you have to change the smtp port for the exchange

Can't add public folder as contact list

2001-12-10 Thread MJohnston

This may be a limitation of Outlook 98, but I didn't come up with anything on a search
of MS.

Exchange 5.5 SP4; client = Outlook 98

Within a public folder, user has created a contacts list. User has owner permission to
both public folder and contacts. When she right-clicks on the contacts and selects
properties and then the outlook address book tab, the option to show this folder as
an email address book is grayed out. I have the option, but I'm using Outlook 2000.
Is this a permissions problem or an OL98 problem?

I know, but I had to have users archive to PST because our store was
reaching it's 16GB limit. So, of course, my boss is the one having a
problem now with a corrupted PST that is over 2GB.

Has anyone used this tool?
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q296/0/88.ASP It
sounds like there is no way to recover all the data in the PST file. If
that is the case, does anyone know of any other tools that allow you to
recover all the data?

Also, according to the article, you have to call MS to get it. Is that
because it's not free?

Thanks, Michelle

Sorry,
I'm on 5.5, not 2k. However, you might try what I'm doing. I have the
public folder in my favorites and I view it that way. I don't know if that will
solve your problem or not, but I guess it's worth a try.

Ok, I have it setup and I'm receiving mail now. Only thing
that is kind of annoying is not knowing what mail is new and what is
old. Since everyone can view it, the bold on new messages
dissapears after anyone has viewed it. Anyway around this?
Also, is there a way to have exchange automatically delete messages
after they are a certain number of days old, so it doesn't get too
  full?

  Thanks,
  Paul

This link explains how to send as a public folder. It is for
subscribing a public folder to a mailing list but might help you figure
it out.

Exchange 5.5, NT4.

I set up a public folder for collection of various email messages. I'm
the
owner and I gave myself user permissions on the folder as well.
However,
when I try to send an email with the email address of the public folder
as
the from address, it tells me I don't have send on behalf of
permissions.

I set it up yesterday and tried various things with no success. On
another
mailbox I can send as, the permissions are the same. Is it not possible
to
send as for a public folder?

Thanks, Michelle

I had done everything but add them to my PAB/contacts. Once I did that and
selected the from address from there, it worked. Thanks again.
