RE: SMTP relaying to multiple internal domains

2008-09-17 Thread Stuart Tonge
Yes that is the current configuration.

Internally, it works fine. But external email is receiving the 'relaying
denied' error message.

SMTP relaying to multiple internal domains

2008-09-16 Thread Stuart Tonge
I have two domains configured on my exchange server:
domaina.com & domainb.com.

domainb.com is the default domain.

I have the exchange SMTP virtual server set to disallow relaying.
However, these settings seem to also be stopping the server from receiving
email for domaina.com.

I can send between the two domains internally using outlook with no issues, but
externally when sending to domaina.com I receive a 'relaying disallowed' error
message.

Can anyone offer any assistance?
Stu.

SMTP Issues.

2008-09-11 Thread Stuart Tonge
Hi all, been awhile since I setup a new exchange server so I am a bit rusty..
In order to allow clients to access the server across the web via SMTP and POP3
is there anything specific I need to do?

I have:
Enabled the POP & SMTP protocols & allowed access through the firewalls.

I can use POP3 and SMTP internally (on the LAN) and it works just fine, however
one remote user is reporting error messages saying that relaying is disallowed.

My relay settings are: (on the SMTP protocol virtual server):
'allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay, regardless of
the list above'

however, this doesn't seem to work, nor does deselecting the above and manually
specifying that the user is allowed to relay.

Even though adding by username doesn't seem to do anything, if I add the user's
IP address to the 'allow relay' list then they can send normally. Unfortunately
however, none of the users have static IP's.

I do not have any authentication enabled on this virtual server as it's the web
facing SMTP handler.
Should I be using an additional SMTP V/S with authentication enabled for remote
users who need to be able to relay?

Any advice or suggestions would be great!

Thanks, Stu.

That was my first thought, too. But management is still in the "give the
users enough rope to hang themselves" frame of mind. As I said, we are
attempting to "retrain" our management.

Based on numerous posts here, we have decided to eliminate the use of PST's
(and light beer) in our company and go with info stores in the mailbox. We
are running Exch 5.5 Standard SP 4 on NT4 SP6a. There are about 2,000 users
in our site. I'm curious how large some of your databases are and any
difficulties associated with handling large Exchange databases. I am trying
to "retrain" our management here to think in terms of limiting mailbox
sizes, establishing a retention policy, etc., etc. But, in case we don't
get there, other than the 16 TB limit, are there any other "gotchas" out
there waiting for me?

Hi all,

I'm hoping you can help me with this problem.

When sending to a particular destination the queue is holding the message
with the following error, SMTP Protocol error occured. I can however, send
mail to this domain from another account (hotmail etc).

At first I thought it could be because our service provider had neglected to
add a PTR record for our mail server. Thi has now been corrected but the
problem still persists.

We are running WIn2K SP2, Exchange 2000 SP2 with the admin patch and the new
smtp patch.

Can anyone tell me what causes this? or is it exchange saying "i really
don't know why I can't send this"

How can I troubleshoot this?

any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Stu

You can edit the default value. On the average server, lowering the

RE: User Permissions

Thanks William.
Is there any way to force the exchange server to refresh immediately?

The information store keeps a cache of directory permissions. It
refreshes this cache every 120 minutes by default. Permission changes
will take "up to" 120 minutes. This is configurable by registry entry.

Hi all.
I'm using groupshield (boo hiss) on an exchange 5.5 server.
I am quaranting most attachments to a directory such as .exe etc.

Is there any way for me to find out who sent the offending attachment?

I know this can be done if they are quarantined to a database but what about
a directory?
If not - then is it possible to open the quarantine directory to see what
files are in there?

Cheers

True but I don't think GroupSUCKS will let you specify to block everything
(*.*) and then specifically allow certain files that you need.
This is what William was talking about (and probably has implemented in his
Exchange paradise) and I like the idea very much myself..
Another point to Antigen..

Yes, Antigen allows you to block filename or *.extension. However,
Groupshield will allow you to block filename and extension - but it requires
service patch 7 obtainable from their prime support.

Speaking of blocking *.*, does Antigen allow you to do this?
In GroupSUCKS you can specify which attachment types to block but not vice
versa..

Do you have a fulltime attachment blocker admin?

How about *.* except what you need?

Some of you might be interested in specific attachments to block?

These are from known viruses. The list does not include every know

Not
really, except if exchange starts ripping your server down or uses too many

Time
is not the most important IT commodity.  The point of IT is not to
stand around and thump your chest and declare yourself king.  Your job is
to do what you can to alleviate a problem as simply, quickly and coste
ffectively as possible.   If you're any good, most of the time you
can.  Sometimes you can't.  That's why you ask questions on thesel
 ists.

That
being said, I think it's about time for Kevin Snook to chime in:

Unfortunately Michele you don't get it IMHO...

To
almost all IT professionals time is the MOST important commodity. If you did get
it, then why would you spend spare time(that is rare and almost non-existent in
the 10+ years I've been doing this) fixing a problem you've already corrected at
the Exchange level. Seems like duplication of effort.

I
understand it's still "not right" as the scripts should be corrected. But why
would the IT professional need to do this??? He/She didn't write the bad
code??

I'd
make THEM fix it while I spent my precious "spare time" doing something more
constructive like exploring XP, Learning MSI, etc...

The problem is that we
have over 100 different clients sites with over 20
different programmers with over 10 different managers.  Do you get the idea now.  It is going
to take me weeks just to get the info out to the field of what they have been
doing wrong in the past.  Then I
will have to justify why it's wrong to use a first and last name instead of an
email address, so on and so on.

I am just trying to
find a way to force Exchange to misbehave long enough for me to fix the real
problem, ignorance.

Otherwise, I have to
dust off my Linux and sendmail books which I really,
really, really don't want to do...

Hi all,

I have a problem where I have 2 servers in 1 site. All mail is received by 1
server (I'll call MainMail). When MailMail has mail that needs to be
delievered to my second server (I'll call ExtMail) it just getts queued in
the MTA. If I reboot ExtMail, all queued mail on MainMail destined for
ExtMail gets delievered. I've checked for any type of replication or
transfer limitation and have not found any. Any Ideas?
