RE: Database recovery help

2002-01-10 Thread larry . manno

I had the same type of problem with a corrupt database with no good
backups. We worked with MS and ended up shipping them a tape with an
off-line backup of the bad databases and they were able to extract almost
all the email from it. Now at the same time the company had agreed to sign
up for a Permier support contract, (lots of bucks). So, if you talk to
the right people and have enough they can get mail out of the
database.

Unfortunately not this time. I don't know if they have the option of
taking the database and working on it but they did not offer that solution.
I believe the exchange database is so sensitive to corruption that there
isn't much that can be done once it is corrupted, unlike a SQL database. I
know SQL can be difficult to deal with but at least you can extract
individual tables to recover some data. I also don't like the fact that
the Exchange database relys so heavily on log files.

I've had good luck with MS assistance as well and it is worth the money.
Unfortunately MS was not able to help this time. I don't think there is
anything available to recover the database but I wanted to investigate it
first before I gave up hope. Hopefully a miracle will happen and someone
will have a utility that might help. They are running with a database from
Nov. 3rd so they didn't lose everything, only the last 2 stinking months of
e-mail, but that makes a big difference to management.

Yup...just went thru the scenerio described...my database went bad...only
to
realize we were backing up the wrong info...spent 3-4 hours running all the
esutils with no luck...called MS support at 11:30pm (thinking there was no
way they could help me with no backups)...they had my Exchange up in 20
minutes...and worked to clean out the database thru the next day (I was so
so relieved..)...also taught me how to backup (correctly)...boy did I learn
a lot. Best $249.00 I've ever spent...saved my ass and my job.

A client of ours has a corrupted database that we attempted to recover with
Microsoft with no luck. I was wondering if anyone has any input on a 3rd
party utility that might assist us in recovering at least some of the mail?
I know restoring from backups would be the ideal solution but we don't have
that option, I know, I know, it's a long story but unfortunately we don't
have that option at this time.

problems everything works fine. The 2 frontend's are setup the
same(services, software,...) as far as I can tell. I have even went so far
as to reinstall the OS (advanced server) from scratch and reinstall exchange

We have three Exchange servers (5.5 SP3) in the same site. Two of the
servers are in one NT 4.0 domain, the third is in a W2K AD domain.

This was working, until we had to change the IP addressing scheme in our
NT 4.0 domain.

We changed the address for the DNS and WINS server in the Echange server
in the AD domain. We can ping the other two servers by name form the AD
domain. The users on the Exchange server in the AD domain can send mail to
each other, just not to anyone on the NT 4.0 Exchange servers.

I've restarted the servers with no success.

The error log shows the following errors repeated;

Technet issues refer to a connection or DNS problem, but the diagnosis

When you create a DL in the GAL you can select an Owner of the DL. This
owner will be able to make changes to the DL. Just make this user the

That's the problem. With older versions of Outlook pre 2000 you can only
create distribution lists in either the GAL using the exchange admin
utility
or in the Personal Address Book. The problem is that list in the GAL is a
pain to administer ( this user expects to be able to do things by himself)
and the pab list cannot be shared. I expect with Outlook 2000 it is
possible to create the DL in this PF and give it permissions as you have
stated.

Hi gurus,
I have the following setup and need to resolve the situation if possible.
Exchange server is NT4 sp6, Exch 5.5 sp3
client is Outlook 98
I have a user who has setup a contacts folder in a public folder and would
like to create a distribution list in this folder that can be accessed by
the staff in his group. I have found a couple of ways of doing this. The
first is to install Outlook 2000 ( I believe the CAL for Exchange allows
this) which apparently can create a distribution list in any contacts
folder
( http://www.slipstick.com/contacts/dl.htm
<http://www.slipstick.com/contacts/dl.htm> ). I would need to get hold of
the media or the install for this so I don't know if this is an option.

The second option also comes from the slipstick.com site and is a utility
called contlist.exe which allows you to create contact lists in any
contacts
folder (including public folders) for OL98. The problem I have here is
that
the file provided is only a 30 day demo and the company that supported it (
Simplecomputing.net) is no longer around. Can anyone tell me where I can
contact the author (Stephen P. Johnson formerly of Simple Computing LLC) of
this program to try and organise a license for this program as this is the
simplest solution for me.

I have a weird problem (not really a problem, but something weird
happening)

Here is the setup:

Windows 2000 Server SP2

Exchange 2000 SP2

NAVMSE 2.6 for EX2K

Message tracking in EX2K is on.

This is a "test" machine setup to practice with before our actual
migration. It is a fresh install with all patches and hot fixes installed.

It is statically assigned in internal address (129.168.1.250) and is not
connected to another site or NAT to any external addresses. (it is on a
subnet with another domain, but is a different domain - no connectors or
trusts)

I was testing NAVMSE by sending some test emails and making sure it was
scanning them. Overnight, I left the NAVMSE statistics screen up. When I
arrived at work the NAVMSE statistics showed several hundred emails
scanned. However, message tracking says no emails were sent through the
server. Being interested in what is causing this, I set up a second test
machine in the identical fashion. This machine also shows emails scanned
by NAVMSE but no messages have been sent through the server.

Again, these machines are not "on the Internet" and have no MX records
pointing to them. They are single machine domains. (Native mode in W2K and
E2K)

What is NAV scanning?

I know many of you will say to use different anti-virus software. This is
not an option at this point.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and input.

Re: exchsvr\imcdata directory full of garbage?

2002-02-15 Thread larry . manno

The imcdata\in\archive and imcdata\out\archive folders have mail in them
because you have diagnostic logging set in the IMS for "Message Archival".
Trun this off and that will stop. For the imcdata\in and imcdata\out here
is a little into to explain them:

There are four queues for the Internet Mail Service. Outbound messages
travel from the MTA's Internet Mail Service queue (Exchsrvr\Imcdata\Out) to
the Internet Mail Service's MTS-OUT queue in the information store. The
Internet Mail Service converts the messages and places them in the Out
queue until they are sent. The Internet Mail Service places messages
received from the Internet in its In queue (Exchsrvr\Imcdata\In). The
messages are then converted by the Internet Mail Service and moved to the
MTS-IN queue in the information store.

Hope this helps.
