I second that emotion...

Nanny Nanny boo boo.. We just bought Sybari[1]. Merry Christmas to me! It
is posts such as this one (out of about a thousand) that I have printed out
and handed copies to my managers to show them that I am not alone in my
grief.

[1]Hi Kelly[2]
[2]Thanks again for helping me convince my manager.

HOWEVER...

If you do decide to try GroupShield from Network Associates, do NOT,
repeat NOT, test it out on a server you care about. Do it on a test
server that you build just for the purpose, on a separate network and in
a separate Exchange organisation from your production environment. If
you can arrange to do it on a separate continent (or better still
another planet), that would be even better. ;)

Seriously... having looked at several products, GroupShield is the only
one that causes lasting damage. You'll spend weeks trying to rid your
organisation of it's left-overs (changes to your organisation forms
library, just for example) if you try to uninstall it. GroupShield
sucks. It's terrible. It is truly awful software. Frankly, it makes
Lotus Notes/Domino look like a pretty good piece of code in comparison
(one of these days I'll get around to writing up my Why Notes/Domino
Sucks web site, but I'll need to find an ISP that gives me more than my
current 100Mb of web space first to be sure I can fit it all in... G).

My personal favourite Exchange AntiVirus product is ScanMail. ScanMail
is cool. It's completely reliable. It caused me no problems at all in
three years. In THREE YEARS (yes, that's thirty-six months), I didn't
have any reason to call for support - not once. It just installed,
worked well, and caused me no problems. I've heard similar reports about
Sybari's Antigen, though I've never tried it myself. I deployed ScanMail
to eleven servers spread across a slow WAN and eleven separate countries
in just under eleven minutes. It took me four days and approximately
twenty calls to NAI support to get GroupShield just to install on one
Exchange server (OK, the first ten installs were quite smooth, but FOUR
DAYS to solve an installation issue on the last one??? Go figure...).

I used GroupShield years ago. It sucked then. I was forced to switch
from ScanMail back to GroupShield recently against my better judgement
(Enterprise licensing deal... I couldn't persuade the pointies that the
free software thrown in with the big desktop AV software deal was
worth exactly what they were paying for it). In the six weeks since
then, I have had at least DAILY dealings with NAI support. And every
day, I find a new reason to wish I was still using ScanMail.

RE: Anit-Virus Software for Exchange

2001-12-22 Thread Clark, Steve

I've always heard the same thing. It was a dead toss between Trend and
Antigen. However, I attempted to contact Trend regarding some questions I
had about the product and a potential relationship. They snubbed me. I
contacted Sybari, got right through and was able to set up a relationship
with ease.

Since adopting the product in all offices, I have found the product to be
fantastic with little or no problem what so ever. When I did have to contact
support, the issues are not only resolved - they follow up with me when I'm
not forthcoming on the results.

Extremely impressive.

My vote from not only product capability but from world class support is
Antigen.

Cost reasons? Is the NAV product renewed after a set term?

How many servers/users?

I think the two most recommended for your messaging gateway are Antigen by
Sybari and Trend Scanmail by TrendMicro.
Each supplemented by desktop deployments of alternate A/V products.

Leaning toward it for the Exchange Server? You have a
fight ahead of you. Other than user forums I can never find anything Anti
CA. I have looked for "Official" ammo but I never found any real
dirt. Use their crap and you will learn real fast...

We use CA's IncoulateIT on the desktop and I am not impressed.
Can anyone give me some "NICE" Examples of CA's
IncoulateIT crashing or messing up the server.
Unfortunatly, that is the direction my boss is leaning right now.

Antigen and Trend are the best... Any CA product is usually the worst, and
there are quite a few that are not at all fond of Groupshield either.

We are currently using Norton Anti-Virus for Exchange which oldly enough
has been working fairly well. My boss, for cost reasons, wishes to examine
Alternatives.

Can you guys recommend some products? and Which products sould I try to
tell him no way, if you want it to work! on?

So far we have looked at F-Secure. Any other thoughts?

Thanks For your comments!!!

I would look into Trend Micro's exchange product. I've used the demo
version a couple of times and it's easy to work with. I don't know about
costs but I like it better than Nortons or InoculateIT.

 h. Is it a setup or a stickup?

Personally, Norton is working, so if it is not broken don't fix it. But my
boss wishes to save some money during this recession. I want a virus
 checker that will work!!

It maybe the best but if cost is an issue and you are using NAV now - where
do you go?
