Hi John,

We support a few users who uses a program called BlackBerry Desktop
Redirector to do just this. I think it needs to be running all the time and
therefore ties up the user's workstation, but if you can live with this then
enjoy...

Kind regards,

BIS is Blackberry Internet Service. It will sync via your OWA portal.
BES express is free so $$ shouldn't be an issue any more if that's

BIS is actually handled by Rim and works with your phone carriers. It's a
portal you login to and setup your connection or you can configure Internet
email right on your phone. It in turns polls the mail servers and then
delivers the email to your phone. It works perfectly with OWA on Exchange 2003
- 2010. No additional charges other than how your carrier charges for Internet
usage. Also pop services..
www.blackberry.com/go/vzw for example

BES Express, latest version. Is completely free. If you have an Exchange
server you can install it on your server or a separate server and it will sync
all contacts/calendar/emails/tasks. You must have your blackberry provisioned
for BES services by the cell carrier. Some charge for this; others include it.
Bes professional 4.x charged 99.00 per blackberry that is no longer the case in
bes express version 5.

Actually with the BES Express some carriers allow you to use the BIS
plans instead. This was a new change with the Express version only.
T-Mobile allows you to use a BIS plan but you won't get OTA activations
for your devices, they would need to be connected to the server. I know
Verizon does require you to have a Enterprise plan even if you use the
BES Express server.

BES does that. You need to make sure wireless synch is enabled for the

One caveat though is that if you delete it from the mailbox, it can take

For BIS, in the portal there is to Synchronize deleted items from mailbox and
phone...or something to the like. On the phone you have to go to email options
and make sure that the delete on option is set to mailbox and handheld.
BIS will then delete messages from outlook that you have deleted on your phone.
FYI this requires connecting with an exchange url not pop3.

ActiveSync is available for the Blackberry, but it is a third party
implementation. AstraSync or NotifySync are the two main players in that arena.

If you are using the Blackberry with a BES, either BES or BES Express then you
just need to change the option in the handset to delete the email on the
mailbox as well as the handset.
If you are using BIS only, then no, because it effectively a poll only - like
Pop3.

Do any of these solutions work similar to ActiveSync, specifically in regards
that when you delete e-mails from either place, it gets removed (hence the
Sync) from the other?

I went from an ActiveSync device to a BB (running on BES) and I really am
bothered by the fact that I have to do double the work.

A quick question.
Can a Blackberry device such as a BB Bold 9700 support push email
without having a BES server, maybe using the BB equivilant of
ActiveSync?
We have a few a Windows/Symbian based devices that have push email to
the phones. The Windows based ones use ActiveSync and SSL cert and the
Symbian ones use Mail For Exchange and a SSL cert

Thanks

2010-05-28 Thread John Cook
I'm curious - since your BB can be set to cycle out mail after a specific time
why do you delete messages off it at all? Do you not get to your Outlook often
enough to manage your mail? I can't tell you how many times I've had to do mail
restores for C level ID10Ts that accidentally deleted the wrong message(s) on
their BB and came crying to us to that they had messages mysteriously
disappear out of their mailbox. Support nightmare having that setting.

BES does that. You need to make sure wireless synch is enabled for the email
account on the Blackberry.
One caveat though is that if you delete it from the mailbox, it can take a bit
to delete from the phone. But it will remove it.

BIS is actually handled by Rim and works with your phone carriers. It's
a portal you login to and setup your connection or you can configure
Internet email right on your phone. It in turns polls the mail servers
and then delivers the email to your phone. It works perfectly with OWA
on Exchange 2003 - 2010. No additional charges other than how your
carrier charges for Internet usage. Also pop services..
www.blackberry.com/go/vzw for example

BES Express, latest version. Is completely free. If you have an
Exchange server you can install it on your server or a separate server
and it will sync all contacts/calendar/emails/tasks. You must have your
blackberry provisioned for BES services by the cell carrier. Some
charge for this; others include it.
Bes professional 4.x charged 99.00 per blackberry that is no longer the
case in bes express version 5.

BIS is Blackberry Internet Service. It will sync via your OWA portal.
BES express is free so $$ shouldn't be an issue any more if that's
what's stopping you from running a BES server.
