I have
a good working relationship with my rep at CDW.  Their pricing is usually
quite good, although Amherst (www.Amherst1.com) has done better for me
recently on HP servers.  Amherst also went the extra mile when I
experienced an out-of-warranty issue with an HP DLT library last
spring.

I
typically purchase miscellaneous hardware and software from www.provantage.com.  The Provantage
site is incredibly easy to use to use, their pricing usually beats
CDW's, their shipping is fast, and customer service has been great
(only needed it twice).

We use www.zones.com . They are in Washington
state so that is kinda close to you. I like them a lot. Our rep is
pretty good and always gives us great prices with next day shipping.
Have used PC Connection and CDW in the past and was not that impressed.
Bad sales reps I guess.

I have
found that CDW prices are on the high side. If I have the need to deal with that
type of supplier I go with PC Connection. Excellent customer service. Decent
prices. If I'm buying a server I deal direct with Dell. Superb customer service
before and after the fact.

That's
my story and I'm sticking to it.

of line either, when I got defective or misshipped equipment, which was
  rarely.

  On
the other hand, I currently don't have a land line (since I have a cell phone,
and since DSL isn't available in my area, I figured it was a waste to get
one.) They wanted a lot of documentation faxed to them before they would
believe that I was who I said I was, in spite of the fact that I specified

went to another vendor, which I'd dealt with before, and had no

There are a lot better faster and cheaper servers
around that don't have a name brand. We used to shop around until we found a
dealer that did white boxes. These are genuine Intel Boxes that cost a hell of
a lot less. My last server we got 2 weeks ago was a 4U box with quad
Xeon  700's with an external DPT array holding 7 36GB harddrives and 4
Gigs of memory. It is a beast of a box that cost us around 16K.  I know

6-7k easy. If anyone wants a contact please feel free to email

What's

RE: CDW

2001-08-21 Thread Bill Kuhn - MCSE

I agree on everything except the brand.

When servers are involved, I don't want to have to sort out which vendor
is telling me the truth when sh*t happens and the fingers start
pointing. Buying a solid name brand single vendor server is worth the
extra $$ in my time and my peace of mind, not to mention company
downtime.

I was solidly a Compaq server kinda guy until the last couple of years.
Compaq has been going downhill in support and overall reliability. I'm
much more likely to go for a Dell these days.

I've bought name brand and off brand and had good/ bad experiences on
both. One office right now has a Gateway 2000 PC as it's server (only 5
people so there's not much load) but it has hardware problems. The only
way I can resolve is to call Adaptec on the controllers, Seagate on the
drives, Kingston on the RAM and GW2K on the motherboard. My point is
this, with Compaq or whomever, you call Compaq for all the hardware
issues and they replace with very little hassle. If you piece meal a
server from another company or yourself, you now own the component
warranty and it's a pain in the A$$.

Now from what I have heard, GWK sells a server and there are a million
small shops selling servers - will they be here in 1 year when the
market continues to spiral down. What utilities and installation
software routines do they accompany with the products? I stick with
Compaq on the server as they are simply the best.

My
experience is stay away from noname brands for servers...  always buy a
real server, more than you'll need too so it sits there and hums and you get no
support calls.  we bought dual X400 with 512 Mb of ram just for an NT
file/print server...  (120 users).  like them a lot  IBM
5500.

RE: CDW

2001-08-21 Thread David James

I can tell you what I know about Compaq. They do tosses with the resellers,
so no matter what pricing you get, ordering from a vendor is still better,
because they can compete on a margin comparable to cdw and then some. When
I say toss, I mean "dealer kickback" off of the sell. That helps the
resellers margin. Honestly, I'd find a local Compaq vendor and see what
price they give you. They should come out and give you onsite service with
what you're looking at, (on the hardware), plus the price is gonna be the
same or better.
I don't know, maybe they don't have local Compaq vendors way up there in
Alaska!!!
GL!

I was
told by a CDW rep that they actually have a contract with Compaq that states
they can't undersell CDW. I'm assuming this only applies to purchases made under
a corporate account.

I
purchase everything over the net. Pcconnection is usually my first choice
followed by CDW. CDW is much more prone to have items backordered when they are
marked on the site as being available. PCConnection is just the
opposite.

CDW
Sorry for the OT
post, but I'd like hear the general consensus about CDW. Are they fairly priced?
Adequate customer service? Prompt shipments? etc. etc.

What's everyone's
experiences with them? I've never purchased from CDW before but a recent quote
on a new exchange server is the best I've seen yet.

Regards,
