RE: Circular logging with mailbox level backup

2012-10-19 Thread Michael B. Smith
I wouldn't recommend it.

Brick level backup and restore is not supported by Microsoft. Period. If you
have a database where you have done a brick level restore, then your database
is not supported.

This is not a change. This has always been true. If you are happy and believe
that your backup vendor can do everything for you, support-wise, then don't
worry about this.

Subject: Circular logging with mailbox level backup

Hi all,

Our offsite backup program now has mailbox / brick level backup, however it
doesn't seem to purge/truncate log files
I have tested restoring random maiboxes and it works fine,
would it be safe to enable circular logging?

TIA

Re: Circular Logging setting

2008-10-14 Thread Alex Fontana
Depends on what your RPO is. By setting circular logging you are limiting
your recovery to the last full backup. With circular logging disabled you
can recover up to your latest consistent log files.

RE: Circular Logging setting

2008-10-14 Thread Carl Houseman
Use an Exchange-aware backup program daily and the log files will be
automatically removed. If you are generating more log files than there is
space within a 24h period, increase the available space.

Circular logging means that older log files are thrown away before being
backed up, and in the event of a disaster recovery from a failure of
database storage, you could not fully recover all messages received prior to
the failure. Of course any such disaster recovery also depends on proper
backups and separation of logs from database, which you may or may not have
done or be doing.

RE: Circular logging?

2002-06-26 Thread Benjamin Zachary

I know it's a bad idea, but for some reason if we don't backup on the
weekends which we usually don't, some of our clients fill up 3-5 gigs of
hard disk space. So I had to turn it on in a few places. I don't manage
huge (over 250) user bases in exchange for most of our clients, so not
sure how important it is for more simple installations. In ex5.5 Ive
never had a problem restoring w/o the logs, and luckily havent had to do
one yet on e2k. Im sure more people will elaborate as to the nightmares
etc etc ...

Yea, that's what I am going to wind up doing. I will bring a W2K laptop
and install the Exadmin on it. Will this work on W2K pro or does it need
to be server? We have TechNet so I wont need a demo to install it. I
would reinstall the tape drive but the idiots can find it so I am stuck
in that situation.

Anyway, some of the logfile have been moved from the Exchange partition
to another and there isn't enough space to put those log files back. I
will have to compress all that I can to get them back on there which is
almost like 2GB. Once I get all the log files in place I will perform
the backup using NTBackup and hopefully this problem will be solved.

As far as who is handling the installation, it is a lost cause. This
company is cheap and doesn't listen to our recommendations. I told them
to purchase the Exchange Agent about 4 months ago when this issue first
arrived. Since it was working they choose to ignore me. I gave them the
alternate solution of using BackupExec which was previously installed on
the box to back up the other server since it already had the Agent. Its
hard working for cheapskates that only care about things when they start
to have problems.

Well let me get to work and see what happens!

Yes, that is correct.

Run setup, select the admin portion only and NTBackup is replaced with
an
Exchange-aware version.

Heck, in Paul's case, he could download a demo of W2K server, throw it
on a
P133, install exchange5.5 admin, run NTBackup over the wire to disk in a
pinch.

Otherwise, whoever is handling this installation should be replaced.

Just my thoughts.

Well, the problem I foresee currently is that when I moved the files
prior to this incident the space got used up very quickly. So I have no
space to move those logs files back onto the drive when we implement the
Exchange Agent for them. Now I can move some more logfiles but then
there will be more log files moved and probably no space to accommodate
them later. These logs files date back from 6/10/01. Can I compress say
6/10/01 to 10/30/01 to gain some space? If so, can I move the previously
moved files back to the Exchange partition when I get the agent and not
have problems when that backup is finally run?

Okay, this sounds like a great idea, but unfortunately there isn't one
W2K machine in that office. So what other choices do I have. Circular

partition containing Exchange dB's and logs. the other partitions do not
have enough space to move the dB's or the logs too. So I am stuck. I can
probably compress the logs but I still need to get it backup somehow to
get the logs moved off of the server. Any more ideas?

If this is Windows2000, use NTBackup to disk if you have to until proper
deployment of Exchange aware backup software is done.

Do not implement circular logging. IF you are able to do an online
backup
tonight AND the log drive is full causing services to stop, then pick a
couple of logs and compress them with NTFS compression. This is NOT for
regular use. Only for emergency to free up space. Do the online
backup.

Then look for someone to take the fall to set an example to the others.

Run NTBackup. You may need to move your tape drive. It will clear the logs
as Backup Exec once did.

ARCServe will work eventually, probably after much pain - good luck with
that. Have you still got the BE licences? Maybe its not too late to back
track?

No, but do you have a different computer that has Win2K on it? It will have
the option to backup to a file. Install the Exchange Server Admin tools on
it and then do a backup from that computer to a file on that computer. It
should work just fine.

The only backup I use to backup Exchange is NTBackup in Win2K. Forget
ArcServe.

NTBackup (free with the O/S) would work just fine. You could even write
up
a little bat file to automate it, to a point.

Hello All,

I have a question about a current situation that a client of mine is in.
They have an Exchange 5.5 SP2 server which has run out of space! They
originally had a tape drive installed on the server and was using Backup
Exec with the Exchange agent. they had circular logging enabled but it
wasn't a problem because they were backing up every night a the logs
were cleared. Now they recently implemented another server and had
ArcServe installed on it. They didn't want to maintain two backup apps
so they uninstalled BbackupEXec from the Exchange serve and maintained
the ArcServe. The ArcServe doesn't have an Exchange agent installed so
there is no current backup of that server except for any files on it. I
recommended that they get the ArcServe Exchange Agent.

AnyHoo, a couple of months ago they ran out of space and they called me.
I found out that it was due to not having a recent backup of Exchange
and the logs had taken all available space. At this time, backupexec was
still installed so I performed a backup and the space was cleared and
the server was able to be started again. Now last week they have come
across the same exact issue again and the tape drive has been removed
and BackupExec uninstalled. So all I could do was move some of the log
files to another server and again recommend that they get the ArcServe
Exchange Agent. now, they recently got hit with Goner and there back to
the space issue again. They have finally approved the Exchange agent but
we are waiting for it to be delivered. So right now, the server is down
because Exchange wont start due to lack of drive space. I cannot move
the log files anymore because the prior relocation took up the space on
another volume. I am thinking of disabling circular logging to let the
logs files not take up the space they are currently using. Is this a
wise move? What other options do I have. Any immediate answers would be
greatly appreciated! TIA!!!

If this is Windows2000, use NTBackup to disk if you have to until proper
deployment of Exchange aware backup software is done.

Do not implement circular logging. IF you are able to do an online backup
tonight AND the log drive is full causing services to stop, then pick a
couple of logs and compress them with NTFS compression. This is NOT for
regular use. Only for emergency to free up space. Do the online backup.

Then look for someone to take the fall to set an example to the others.

No. NTBackup on W2K only will backup to file.

Also, you can install Exchange admin on another box other than the exchange
server to perform this.

Okay, this sounds like a great idea, but unfortunately there isn't one

have enough space to move the dB's or the logs too. So I am stuck. I can
probably compress the logs but I still need to get it backup somehow to
get the logs moved off of the server. Any more ideas?

Well, the problem I foresee currently is that when I moved the files
prior to this incident the space got used up very quickly. So I have no
space to move those logs files back onto the drive when we implement the
Exchange Agent for them. Now I can move some more logfiles but then
there will be more log files moved and probably no space to accommodate
them later. These logs files date back from 6/10/01. Can I compress say
6/10/01 to 10/30/01 to gain some space? If so, can I move the previously
moved files back to the Exchange partition when I get the agent and not
have problems when that backup is finally run?

TIA!!!

do a full backup using ntbackup. This will have been modified when Exchange
was installed to be able to see the exchange organisation. This will also
clear the logs without having to install the AArghserve client.

I think William has said this previously but yes, it changes some of the
dll's so that it can see the Exchange organisation.
I've just stopped using AArghserve and started using NTbackup. It seems to
get through the backup much quicker than AKserve ever did. Probably because
we had BLB's enabled. :)

probably compress the logs but I still need to get it backup somehow to

If this is Windows2000, use NTBackup to disk if you have to until proper
deployment of Exchange aware backup software is done.

Do not implement circular logging. IF you are able to do an online
backup
tonight AND the log drive is full causing services to stop, then pick a
couple of logs and compress them with NTFS compression. This is NOT for

TIA!!!

Yes, that is correct.

Run setup, select the admin portion only and NTBackup is replaced with an
Exchange-aware version.

Heck, in Paul's case, he could download a demo of W2K server, throw it on a
P133, install exchange5.5 admin, run NTBackup over the wire to disk in a
pinch.

Otherwise, whoever is handling this installation should be replaced.

Just my thoughts.

No. NTBackup on W2K only will backup to file.

Also, you can install Exchange admin on another box other than the
