I'm
using Symantec Exchange AntiVirus 2.1. It allows you to block attachments
with a registry hack, it doesn't seem to let me blcok more than 10. I
guess that should suffice, I was just wondering if there was something out there
with more advanced features. It will probably cost $$$
though

NO! It blocks them on the Client side. You are, after all, relying on a
security patch on the Client to enforce those settings. Blocking them on the server is having
an AV package strip them as they are scanned, before they get into the
Information Store. More clear?

No
problem. Plus, you have to
remember that since it is the client, (OLSecPatch), it doesnt actually delete
the attachment, it only blocks access to it. If you were to access that e-mail from another computer that
didnt have the patch installed, you would be able to get to the offending
attachment just fine. I read in
one of your later posts that you had NAV for Exchange. I would try and do some more checking,
maybe even a call to Symantec, regarding the attachment blocking. It is hard to understand that it would
limit you on the number of attachments it can block, but there are plenty of
things that we dont understand whey they are. Hope you get this resolved.

Why on earth would you want to list every specific file name for such
file types when you can easily use a wildcard?? e.g. *.bat

  No
  problem. Plus, you have to
remember that since it is the client, (OLSecPatch), it doesn't actually delete
the attachment, it only blocks access to it. If you were to access that e-mail from
another computer that didn't have the patch installed, you would be able to
get to the offending attachment just fine. I read in one of your later posts that
you had NAV for Exchange. I would
try and do some more checking, maybe even a call to Symantec, regarding the
  attachment blocking. It is hard
to understand that it would limit you on the number of attachments it can
block, but there are plenty of things that we don't understand whey they
  are. Hope you get this
  resolved.

NO! It blocks them on the Client
side. You are, after all, relying
on a security patch on the Client to enforce those settings. Blocking them on the server is having
an AV package strip them as they are scanned, before they get into the
  Information Store. More
  clear?

They
block virus and/or attachments at the IMS level before they hit any
mailbox/machine/server. They also can be set up to send the offending
party a email message stating that they are sending out a virus. This last
feature will cut down the number of virus you get significantly. Many
organizations upgraded their AV after the sales/marketing/CEO type get a message
back stating that they are spreading "X" virus

  I'm using Symantec
Exchange AntiVirus 2.1. It allows you to block attachments with a
registry hack, it doesn't seem to let me blcok more than 10. I guess
that should suffice, I was just wondering if there was something out there
with more advanced features. It will probably cost $$$

Anybody have any ideas on what extensions to block for viruses I
have (.vbs, .bat, .com, .exe, .vbe, .dll, .mp3) any others?

I've set our software to block any email that contains a system file or
executable, including.bat, .com, .pif, .bin, .chm, .cmd, .cpl, .dl?,
.drv, .exe, .ini, .js?, .ole, .ov?, .reg, .scr, .shs, .sys, .vb?, .vxd,
.wiz, .xml, and

We also block Office and other program's scripts, macros, or similar
dangerous files, for example, .dot, .msg, .xlt, and others.

We don't block Office documents, but quarantine any that contain macros. We
also don't block movie, picture, or sound files, but we would consider that
if bandwidth becomes a problem over e-mail. We've got 10mb mailboxes, so
not much goes through.

We allow compressed files, but the virus scanners do block executables
there, too. If we have a legitimate need to receive one of these files, we
have several options - transfer by FTP or web, temporarily disable the
protection, or sneaker net.
