You should not use FCM for Exchange.

Use Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup -status and
Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroupNetwork.

Subject: EXCHANGE 2010 SP2 UR3 two node DAG and 1 FileShare witness server

Greetings
W2K8 R2 SP1
EXCHANGE 2010 SP2 UR3 two node DAG and 1 FileShare witness server for quorum.

Very simple configurations as listed above and has been working for a couple of
years with no changes.

Recently, when we tried to roll DBs on the DAG for MS UPDATES, we found our
witness server was not working even though it was on line so we were stuck.

We determined that the FileShare witness server directory had lost all rights
for unknown reasons so even though the witness server was on line, the failover
cluster could not properly access the witness server directory.

We recreated all the folder rights and eventually got everything working - so
far with no errors.

My question is how can we proactively monitor the quorum status to make sure it
is all working?

Failover Cluster Manager DAG1 shows Quorum Configuration and shows the proper
path to the witness server.

Failover Cluster Manager NODES shows both our EXCHANGE servers up.

Failover Cluster Manager NETWORKS shows both our EXCHANGE servers up.

What I cannot find yet in the Failover Cluster Manager GUI is where we verify
the witness server is up at the application witness server level?
(We know the witness server is up and running as it is a DC.)

Am I missing another GUI screen?

Is there any non-invasive command line to check to make sure all three hosts
are responding and on line for a quorum?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dana

RE: Exchange 2010 SP2 which rollup

2013-01-24 Thread Heaton, Joseph@Wildlife
The message in the KB is actually telling you that the native image thing is
normal, but if you don't have internet connectivity, you can't do that step,
but it takes time for the request to time out, which causes the extreme length
of time for the install.

I think the wording on the documentation should be better. I also now think
the message is what you normally see, but they worded it in such a way that it
can be misleading. It had me thinking maybe it should be saying something
different than native images. But all looks good. It installed and no errors
in the logs or otherwise.

Thanks again for the reply!

very slow install which is not happening. Perhaps someone could confirm... as
I don't have long install time, but I do see that message during install.

When you install this update rollup on a computer that is not connected to the

receive the following message:
Creating Native images for .Net assemblies.
This behavior is caused by network requests to connect to the

requests represent attempts to access the certificate revocation list for each
assembly that native image generation (NGen) compiles to native code. However,
because the Exchange server is not connected to the Internet, each request must
wait to time out before the process continues.

I have full internet connectivity so I don't know if I am experiencing the
issue they are talking about or not. I went ahead and followed the work around

Am I running into the problem they are describing or not?

Should it be NOT saying native images?

With Exchange 2010 SP2 there are some rollup's available.

Which one is recommended by the gurus at this time?

I know a number of people who are just on rollup 3, some one rollup 4 and a few

Should I go ahead and go with 5v2 or step back to 3 or 4?

Re: Exchange 2010 SP2 which rollup

2013-01-23 Thread Greg Saunders
I think the wording on the documentation should be better. I also now
think the message is what you normally see, but they worded it in such a
way that it can be misleading. It had me thinking maybe it should be
saying something different than native images. But all looks good. It
installed and no errors in the logs or otherwise.

Thanks again for the reply!

Just recently installed these roll ups. Got the same message and took a

I noticed they took longer on our mailbox servers (for what ever reason).
I actually did go into the IE settings and unchecked the Check for
publisher's certificate revocation and then enabled it after setup was
complete (even though the servers have internet access).

 ** **

I would think that the message should come up regardless and will take
time depending on how long it takes to compile the images.

Hmmm maybe that is what it should say and the problem (if one has it)
is very slow install which is not happening. Perhaps someone could
confirm... as I don't have long install time, but I do see that message
 during install.

Guys... not sure if this is a problem or not. I am installing Rollup 5

 and following screen says:

The setup wizard has finished generating native images for .NET
 assemblies

Now my concern is over what I read here
 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=2785908 which states:

When you install this update rollup on a computer that is not connected
to the Internet, you may experience long installation times. Additionally,
you may receive the following message:

Creating Native images for .Net assemblies.

This behavior is caused by network requests to connect to the
 http://crl.microsoft.com/pki/crl/products/CodeSigPCA.crl website. These
network requests represent attempts to access the certificate revocation
list for each assembly that native image generation (NGen) compiles to
native code. However, because the Exchange server is not connected to the
Internet, each request must wait to time out before the process continues.

I have full internet connectivity so I don't know if I am experiencing the
issue they are talking about or not. I went ahead and followed the work
around in the document and started again, but I see the same thing.

Am I running into the problem they are describing or not?

Should it be NOT saying native images?

 Greg

With Exchange 2010 SP2 there are some rollup's available.

Which one is recommended by the gurus at this time?

I know a number of people who are just on rollup 3, some one rollup 4 and
 a few on rollup 5v2.

Should I go ahead and go with 5v2 or step back to 3 or 4?

Sigh,
Nice vendor, they should have at least walked you through the logs to see why
the lb thinks node1 is not available.

Did you look in the iis logs on the first node?

Subject: Exchange 2010 SP2 UR3 upgrade - load balance issues

Greetings,

Exchange 2010 SP2 UR3
W2K8 R2 SP1.

Two Node DAG.
SERVER1 and SERVER2 each run MAILBOX, CAS and HUB TRANSPORT roles.

Hardware load balancer (Not MS NLB).

SP2 UR3 applied successfully ( thank for all the list planning tips as that was
a big help).
SERVER1 is the active mailbox and mailboxes are available.
End users are not seeing issues best we can tell.
SMTP load balancing appears to be working per Hardware load balancer connection
screens.
However, looking at Hardware Load Balancer screens, we see about 160
connections to SERVER2, and only a couple to SERVER1 and normal on this LB is
pretty even 50/50 mix. The load has not evened out over the last 24 hours.

We verified server1 is responding by bypassing LB and going direct to
SERVER1/OWA with no issues.

I have a call to LB vendor support, but of course they want me to verify that
all is well on the MS end and rule out anything that might have been caused by
the SP2 UR3 upgrade.

I have looked at the SERVER1 basic EVENT logs for anything that sticks out and
not seeing anything.
However I don’t have any experience troubleshooting the EXCHANGE LB
application operations side, just the configs on the Hardware LB, and from what
I can tell at this point, the Hardware LB all looks normal and connected to
both SERVER1 and SERVER2.
The load is simply not balancing and most connections seem to be going to
SERVER2.
Where would I check on the MS EXCHANGE side for data on what is happening for
load balancing.

Thanks for any ideas as I sift through google searches and TIDs.

Dana

As others said you need to test where it matters to you; no doubt the technet
forums will be awash with people who'd had issues and it's worth watching for
anything not caught by TAP.

My personal experience with SP2 via TAP was that it was a fairly painless
upgrade (across a fairly large multi-site Exchange environment); as with SP1
reading the release notes, using ExBPA to clear up any underlying issues and
looking for any non-default/unsupported settings should assist with making sure
nothing bites you; and of course having a test environment with a similar
configuration to your production environment will help no end in testing.

Is there a must have that should drive me to install this SP?

SP2 of 2007 gave me no end of nightmares!

Cheers,

Phil.

RE: Exchange 2010 SP2 is now available

2011-12-06 Thread Michael B. Smith
I personally have not, but many members of the TAP were using BES. I know it
works, but I believe there was some minimum level required. It should be on the
RIM site.

Curious if anyone has loaded SP2 with BES services in the mix. We have two
clients that still run BES with Exchange 2010 and the Gal segmentation is a
biggie for them.

2011-12-06 Thread Michael B. Smith
Not to my knowledge. The goal was to provide guidelines which, when used along
with ABP's, were supportable; and then to provide a certification program for
vendors. There is a webpage that lists the vendors who are either certified or
in the process of being certified here:

I asked, but got no response.

I would suggest you go with 5.0.3.

Just an FYI..

Their site is not updated for Sp2 yet.
Haven't been able to find anything through google. Do you have any direct

That's an easy one: deploy it when you feel that your own testing is completed,
and/or you have appropriate recovery procedures in place should the worst
happen.

For me, I'm going to deploy it on a single server basic installation, and build
a full Exchange test site based on 2010 SP1 where SP2 will be the first to get
the testing treatment.
