Good
grief, don't do that!
Put a
simple SMTP machine in your DMZ to forward internet mail to your Exchange server
(leaving Exchange inside). Only allow external SMTP traffic to Exchange
via the external SMTP server (through your firewall).
That'll be $10,000 (consultant's fee) - please.

Your consultant
is wrong. Very wrong. Ask for your money back.

Essentially, yes,
you can move your exchange server into a DMZ, but you will end up punching so
many holes into the corporate LAN, that you DMZ will be worthless.

I would be akin
to putting up a nice security door, then taking the locks
off.

You
could put an SMTP relay on a server in the DMZ and have it relay to your
Exchange server. ButI would avoid putting the Exchange server on the
DMZ. Relay such as NA WebShield SMTP (I can't believe I just suggested an
NAI product, use TREND's if you do this). You used to have Sendmail for
SMTP but that is no longer available. Heck, I think you could even use the
SMTP in IIS as a relay to internal email if you really want to segragate your
Exchange server from the outside world.

RE: Moving our exchange 5.5 server to DMZ

2002-03-19 Thread Chris Hampton

This may require a little translation. ROTFLMAO?

Don's and my opinions may differ on the equipment, but
I think everyone will recomend a proxy instead of
sticking your email on a dmz. too Many holes. You may
want to specify the the ip of that machine only.

I think everyone will recomend a proxy instead of
sticking your email on a dmz. too Many holes. You
  may
want to specify the the ip of that machine only.

Much like Don I use a smtp proxy on a watchguard
firebox with a sendmail esk email server in it. It
works amazing and allows me to control address
attachments all in one location. I would highly
recomend this route instead.
Thanks

You could put an SMTP relay on a server in the DMZ
and have it relay to your
Exchange server. But I would avoid putting the
 Exchange server on the DMZ.
Relay such as NA WebShield SMTP (I can't believe I
 just suggested an NAI
product, use TREND's if you do this). You used to
 have Sendmail for SMTP
but that is no longer available. Heck, I think you
 could even use the SMTP
in IIS as a relay to internal email if you really
 want to segragate your
Exchange server from the outside world.

Good grief, don't do
that!

Put a simple SMTP machine
in your DMZ to forward internet mail to your Exchange server (leaving Exchange
inside). Only allow external SMTP traffic to Exchange via the external
SMTP server (through your firewall).

That'll be $10,000
(consultant's fee) - please. :)

dothose that can't, consult
