Spam Control

2002-07-09 Thread Stefan Jafs

I'm using Trends NeaTSuite with eManager to limit spam.

I'm blocking about 250 - 400 messages per day. We have about 50 users. I'm still
getting maybe 150 junk message trough. Is there any way of bring that number down? Any
ideas.

RE: spam control

2002-02-13 Thread Toni, Randy

Another vote for Mail Marshal. It slices, it dices, it even makes Julienne
fries - why, just look at that tomatouuuh, maybe that's the Ronco
Mail-O-Matic that I'm thinking of?

Sorry - I think I just had a non-maskable interrupt. Yeah, I like Mail
Marshal - not particularly just for spam but also for all the other great
features. I don't have anywhere near the degree of Exchange expertise that
you find here on this list, so it's nice to have an easy-to-setup-and-use
system in front of the Exchange server that let's me completely customize
how I want to
handle/forward/quarantine/kill/modify/return/notify/quantify/report/relay/bl
ah blah blah... in test it has been working like a charm.

Trend also gets a lot of great reviews on the list(s). Beyond spam - and
regardless of what product you may choose - it can be another layer of
defence. I sat a Marshal test box behind our existing SMTP relay (proxy
service) for some initial testing and one day about 42 instances of "my
party" blew right by that proxy (bug!) where it should have died, but got
hammered by Mail Marshal before even touching Exchange - and at least a few
got in before our client AV sigs got rolled across the site. Granted, an
Exchange pro could set it up to do a lot of this right at the server as well
- and maybe the 3rd party is overkill in some situations - but for me (a
highly paranoid aspiring semi-pro), it's a solid, easy to use, completely
customizable "email pre-processing plant" that adds another layer of
security.

As for spam itself, lots of (most?) spam is end-user self-induced. I don't
know if I would push for any (possibly expensive) 3rd party solution just
for the sake of spam elimination - especially given that we don't get
anywhere near what others on this list have talked about in the past. A big
flood of spam might change that attitude pretty quick, but fortunately the
3rd party stuff out front makes my life a lot easier if & when that becomes
necessary.

Re: spam control

2002-02-13 Thread Don Andrews

I'd agree with the 3rd party - we have various internal systems (MVS,
Tandem, most flavors of unix, various web servers in addition to our
primary end users mail system) that can send and in many cases receive
internet mail - our 3rd party system sits between all these and our
internet facing sendmail relays - does virus scanning, content
(including spam) filtering, attachment blocking, S/MIME proxying etc.
for all of them. The only thing not handled by an external 3rd party
system is cleaning up internal mailboxes should a virus get in somehow.

2002-02-13 Thread Allen Crawford

I sort of agree, but I have (had) an @home.com email address and only had it
because I was a cable modem subscriber. I never used this address for
anything other than checking it once a month for my billing information.
Guess what? I get about 8 junk emails each day on that account now. I know
that I never filled out any form anywhere with it. So, I'm guessing that
good old bankrupt @home sold it. I guess that probably wouldn't happen with
any of our companies since we wouldn't sell the address, but it wouldn't be
difficult for that address to get leaked out by someone else or through a
business card or something like that.

As for third-party spam-control software, we currently use nothing. I find
it hard to justify the cost because not everyone receives the spam or as
much as others. I typically get about 5-10 a day here myself, but I've
filled out countless forms for product evaluations and such. Shift+Delete
works fine for me, just a bit annoying is all. I am considering evaluating
eManager to go with our ScanMail, but I'm in no hurry. In the meantime, I
just keep adding domains to block when they are obviously not a company we
plan on doing business with anytime soon. Em5000.net, 0mbranetworking.com,
optinmembers.com, stuff like that...

RE: spam control

2002-02-13 Thread Matthew Carpenter
Title: RE: spam control

Well for us, the spam slammer is a very welcome side effect. We needed the app to do confirmations. We receive data attachments from clients to enter into our own database, and to verify that data, we have the app force an email to KNOWN regulatory email addresses to verify that the data is valid. The app is a great spam stomper to boot, so I am happy.

I sort of agree, but I have (had) an @home.com email address and only had it because I was a cable modem subscriber.  I never used this address for anything other than checking it once a month for my billing information. Guess what?  I get about 8 junk emails each day on that account now.  I know that I never filled out any form anywhere with it.  So, I'm guessing that good old bankrupt @home sold it.  I guess that probably wouldn't happen with any of our companies since we wouldn't sell the address, but it wouldn't be difficult for that address to get leaked out by someone else or through a business card or something like that.

As for third-party spam-control software, we currently use nothing.  I find it hard to justify the cost because not everyone receives the spam or as much as others.  I typically get about 5-10 a day here myself, but I've filled out countless forms for product evaluations and such.  Shift+Delete works fine for me, just a bit annoying is all.  I am considering evaluating eManager to go with our ScanMail, but I'm in no hurry.  In the meantime, I just keep adding domains to block when they are obviously not a company we plan on doing business with anytime soon.  Em5000.net, 0mbranetworking.com, optinmembers.com, stuff like that...

RE: Spam Control

2002-07-10 Thread PSmith

I'm also using eManager, and I've seen a lot of spam that contain no words,
only pictures. At that point, you have to open the email and View, Options,
and add the sender's domain to the Anti-Spam tab as a new rule, with their
domain in the Routing Domain line. If you've already done this, then I'm
out of ideas.

For instance, we get a LOT from Korea, and they're all pictures, so I've
added co.kr in the Routing Domain line, and that takes care of a lot. I've
also set this rule up to Quarantine instead of Delete, in case we get a
customer inquiry from that country.

Also, I have set up a Spam Archive public folder for the users to place
their Spam mail in. Keeps my inbox free from forwarded Spam.

I agree with someone else's response (sorry I can't give due credit, already
deleted it before responding to this one) that there is a time/cost factor
involved. I try to spend 10 or 15 minutes each week updating my rules.
It's an ongoing process that will never be 100%

I'm using Trends NeaTSuite with eManager to limit spam.

I'm blocking about 250 - 400 messages per day. We have about 50 users. I'm
still getting maybe 150 junk message trough. Is there any way of bring that
number down? Any ideas.

Mm...
Pizza.

Internal SPAM can be a huge problem. More so than external. In a
organization of 20,000 users, how many really need to see that the East
Nowhere Site basement fax machine is down?

Sure you can. Disconnect from the internet.

You need to weigh the costs of the time it takes your users to delete the
ones that get through vs. the time that it takes you to administer the
content filter. When the costs of your time and equipment become greater,
you've done too much.

That's why DL's that include everyone are usually restricted to senders with good
judgement, right?

At our place they are. Well, sort of, restricted to use by President's (of
university) Office and the various vice-president's office. And only
generic "office" accounts, which only certain staff members in those offices
are given permission to send as.
