[expert] Misbehaving "ls" error in console
Dear friends: I am experiencing a strange bash error IN THE CONSOLE ONLY, that is in the real console, NOT in xterm. At the user prompt (even after reboot), I type pwd, and I get the correct answer: $/home/sher But when I type "ls" I get a long series of similar lines listing all the contents of my home directory as follows: [home/sher]$ls bash: 34mDesktop: command not found bash: command not found bash: lynx_bookmarks.html: command not found bash: command not found bash: 34mwp80 command not found bash: command not found etc. etc. Every file or directory in my home/sher directory is listed. Some have a number plus "m" prefixed to them (usually 34m or 31m) and others just list the file name. I don't have the faintest idea what this means. Could someone please enlighten me on this. Thank you so much. Benjamin -- Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net

FTP is very tough - so many cracks have been done with FTP that it's a bitch to configure and always tries to fail safe. To do what you want, you'd add ftpuser and apacheuser to the same group, then give that group permissions to the directory with chown -R :servergroup /home/httpd/html/ and chmod -R g+rw /home/httpd/html/. You'd also have to change the default users for apache and ftp since neither has write access anywhere IIRC. > > Pointers to a good book or a good FAQ would also be most welcome. > > Thanks in advance, > Lyle

To make it happen all the time, add that command to your .bashrc file in your home directory. That file is a shell script is run every time you log in (kind of like your own personal autoexec.bat) Or you could add that line to /etc/bashrc if you want it to take effect for all users' logins. Here's a reply I received from Jeff Stewart that will fix the Samba printing problem. His fix worked for me. Good luck. Darrin > I've found a fix for this, although it's probably not the "Best way" (tm) to do it. After comparing an lm6.1 machine (that works w/ an SMB printer), and the lm7.0 (that doesn't), I found that /var/spool/lpd/lp/.config was mode 644 on the 6.1 machine. Obviously not good. The .config on the 7.0 box was 640, root.root. Changed the .config on the 7.0 machine to 644 and printing thru smb works. Didn't like having .config world-readable, so I changed it back to 640, root.lp. This works. I've just noticed that if you run printtool and rebuild the .config, it sets it back to root.root. DrakConf will leave the owner.group perms the same as they were originally, root.lp in this case. Bottom line, the .config should be owner-root, group-lp. -- _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ Jeff Stewart _/ _/ _/ Computer Sciences Corporation _/ _/_/_/ _/Corporate Technology Center _/ _/ _/ 3170 Fairview Park Drive _/_/_/ _/_/_/ _/_/_/ Falls Church, VA 22042 703.641.3317 / [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Thu, 20 Jan 2000, dagnir wrote: > I've experience a number of weird things installing Mandrake 7.0 and > have gone through the install 3 times and have managed to get past all but > one problem. [expert] MDK7, somne small issues...
Hi... Just installed MDK7.0 today.. it went about fine, tho' I noticed something that got on my nerves, backspace and/or doesn't seem to work in nxterm properly. Might be other things too, but this is what Í noticed. [root@betty /root]# rm foo rm: remove `foo'? I can't delete if I make a typo when typing yes or no on that question... it always end up something like ^H or ^[7~m when I press backspace or delete ... it didn't happen before. I guess I can change the term variable to something but that shouldn't be necsseary. Any ideas? I also noticed that licq instantly set me in N/A mode after going online... and I can't get the N/A mode go away. MIGHT be due to config files from my own compiled licq I used before, but it was the same version and all so I doubt it. (my own compiled version died on my cause it was missing some lib after the upgrade, so I had to replace it) Any ideas on this one... or should I just do rm -rf ~/.licq? Another thing, which may not be an issue with mandrake, but I tried to compile the mx300 (Vortex2) drivers from Aureal with the mandrake 2.2.14-15mdksmp kernel installed, I didn't succeed, I ended up with missing symbols. ;( It worked fine with the 2.2.13 kernel I used before. So... anyone got this working? :) Well... Maybe Mandrake 7.0 was a little rushed out... or maybe it's just me, but many people seem to have problems with it. I think MDK 6.1 worked like a charm... I'm sure 7.0 do to.. but it's the little bugs that kills... less of those, and it would have been even better. /* END OF RANT */ Thanks, Rickard.
[expert] Gnome-media features missing?
I've just moved over to linux mandrake 7.0 from RedHat 6.1. One thing I noticed that RedHat's version of gnome had was a control panel option to auto play audio cds, auto unmount on pressing eject, auto mount a data cd and bring up gmc, etc. Under mandrake it's not so. I tried downloading RH 6.1 SRPMS for gnome-core, gnome-media, and control-panel and recompiling but didn't get these options. I even tried just using RH's RPMS instead but no go. Anyone have any ideas on how to get these options back and where they came from? Also, on an unrelated note. Does the gcc that comes with mandrake default to pentium optimizations or does egcs need to be installed for that? Thanks! Ti

[expert] Home LAN: RJ45, phone or AC ?
>>Posted for Dan Woods<< Subject: Home LAN: RJ45, phone or AC ? Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 15:56:22 -0700 From: Dan Woods <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Organization: U of Calgary Newsgroups: comp.os.linux.networking I was trying to decide the best approach for connecting my old computer to the new one to share my (not yet installed) cable modem, and printer. I know Linux supports two network cards and RJ45 wiring between them (with or without a hub). Does Linux support the options that allow you to connect thru your phone lines or AC outlets ? Do these options really work, and what speed do you experience ? I understand that the network cards will be the most reliable, but wiring RJ45 lines would not be simple where I the computers are. I believe that Diamond now has a 5 Mbps telephone line option and this seems to be a viable option, since it allows a PC to be anywhere near existing phone jacks. What are your opinions or suggestions on this issue ? Thanks... Dan.
Re: [expert] RE:Replace MAC Address/Filter on MAC
Not really. The mac address only applies to local ip's. Your router would sub for all the other ip's, so the only mac address you get is the router's address for your cable modem customers. [expert] ANNOUNCE: KDE2 prealpha RPM's available
Hello! I have built a new set of binary distributions based on a CVS snapshot at 8:00am EST 1-25-2000. I have created both a RPM and a -BIN.TAR.GZ distribution. To those who have downloaded QTCOPY dated 01-19-2000 - You do not need to update this. Continue using the same qt copy. (file name qtcopy-01192000). This should save you some download time. These binaries are ALPHA code so the only guarantee you have is that they will take up hard drive space. Please read the README in the FTP / HTTPD directory before downloading anything. These binaries are know to work on Redhat 6.1, Mandrake 6.1, and SuSe 6.3, and I think someone got them working on Caldera (no idea which build). If you get them working on something else other than what I just listed, please let me know so I can add them to the list. You MUST install: Qtcopy (or leave it installed) KDESUPPORT KDELIBS KDEBASE And then whatever else you desire. RPM - You will most likely need to use the --nodeps flag and the --force flags. Make sure you install qt copy first. For those upgrading from my last distribution: To be safe you make want to: Mv /opt/kde2 /opt/kde2.old Prior to doing this install. That way you still have your last version. Of course you can do what I do and just over-write it or delete it. So, where do you find this great stuff? ftp://nebsllc.com/kde2/current or http://www.nebsllc.com and follow the links for kde2 alpha code. I monitor the kde users list (mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and (mailto:kde- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) if you need help. I can not reply to all the personal emails that I get, please write to the list first.

If you want to change your network card's MAC address use the following two commands: ifconfig ethx down ifconfig ethx ether hw aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff Where ethx represents your network card (eth0, eth1, eth2, etc.), and the colon seperated list represents the new MAC address. Now just rerun your networking startup script or reboot. Hoyt

Re: [expert] Want to Move HD to new system
I was once running a Cyrix 233MX processor on a Biostar TX board, then went to a DFI VIA Apollo board with an AMD K62-400 processor, and had no problems with a Mandrake 6.0 install. That is, the install from the 233 worked on the 400 as well. (Of course Windows had to be reinstalled, but) I too use loadlin, which is much less picky (in my experience) than lilo, and encountered no problems there either. I think Windows gives users problems because it configures itself pretty well to the hardware it runs on, whereas Linux is designed (more or less) to run on anything. It should work. Same IDE devices, video card, etc. The IRQ for the modem may change but that is all stuff you can fix nothing major like the computer not booting up that I can think off. [expert] Want to Move HD to new system
I have Mandrake 6.1 installed on what is now a dual boot system (98, MDK). My second HD has a win partition on it (FAT 16) for storing of files, and the rest is Linux'd. My system is currently a P233mmx (Gigabyte board). My new board is a Gigabyte BX chipset. CPU will be a PII 450. I am (for now) going to take all the parts out of the 233 to make the new system runable. So the question is: Since I have Linux installed on it's own drive, can I just pull the drive out and install it in new machine with successful bootup? I don't use lilo now, I use loadlin. Will this be a problem? What problems will I encounter in this swap out ?? Brian D. Klar - CVE OTS WPAFB (937)257-5773 937-973-3125 (Pager)

You can hack your kernel (the ethernet module) to do that, I imagine. Re: [expert] Upgrade to 7.0?
