[expert] Server not coming up in KDE

2000-02-11 Thread Eric L. Damron

I just installed a Mandrake 7.0-2 server at home. I chose the server
option. It seems to be running fine except that the windows manager is not
KDE. It looks more like a regular terminal then a GUI. Whatever the
default Xwindows manager is for the server configuration, I don't like it.
I want KDE!

How do I tell Mandrake to default to KDE?

Thanks.

1)Grap the source from:
http://advancedextranet.com/pub/AES/SRPMS/MySQL-3.22.30-2mdk.src.rpm
This is the latest MySQL version, with a few Mandrake adaptations (bzip'ed
source, man pages, spec file that uses RPM cflags, etc.)
2)rpm -i MySQL-3.22.30-2mdk.src.rpm
3)cd /usr/src/RMP/SPECS
4)rpm -ba mysql.spec --target i686
5)The rpms will be built in /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686

Hi,
I have ASUS P3B-F motherboard with ASUS ASIC hardware monitor,
I was trying to find info about that "ASIC", but did not succeed.

The question is - can I have control of the temperatures&volts on Linux
with this motherboard?
I'm aware of lm_sensors module, but I don't think it supports ASIC.
Or could you just point me where I can find info on that topic.

Thanks a lot, Art.

[expert] Other distros

2000-02-11 Thread Civileme

Well, much has been said about Mandrake 7.0 problems. I
thought I would look at some other distros with a nice GUI
INSTALL to see if anything was better:

Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 -- SEVERE problems with dhcp
(basically unusable) And if your sound card isn't supported
at install the chances of getting anything working are quite
small. Even their distro of OSS doesn't seem to be able to
overcome the problem with COAS and the ability or (lack of it)
to load modules. OTOH, if you are not using dhcp and if your
sound is detected and properly set up, it is fairly nice.
Just DON't try to load Sun's version of StarOffice on it,
because you get annoying and inconsequential error messages
with every GUI logon(Sun assumes the directory structure is
different for KDE). Also, all systems I have tried with it,
the way to get from GUI to console and back without going to
the gettys is to restart the system. It hangs going from
GUI to console at the login screen, and also in console mode
if you type startx or kde.

Corel Linux 1.0--Not a whole lot there, but it seems to be
good. However an nmap -sS scan puts it down (no joke). Now
back to the REAL OSes. If nmap broke it from inside, that
would be OK, but on a LAN or over the internet a scan against
its IP made it hang.

RH 6.1 -- In the category of "interesting" but hardly
useful. Non-detection of mice seems to break the gui install.

Independence--Not there yet, but better at modem setup and
Kppp than Mandrake. It is more oriented toward the user who
will use it as the only system on a modest computer, and it
does better at that task than any other I have checked.

I use KDE and the problem was so easy
As I wrote before I found out that I missed some files. An other guy with the same

in kcmkisdn you have to set up the path to the pppd to where it is and not where they

When you take the browser to search for the file it will be shown at once but the path
isn't the same as it is

pointing to the right place and ISDN is up and running :-)

To be more specific --
FP extensions is installed on my box and for the main server it works great.

However, when I try to add a virtual server I get an error on the *.cnf
file, "no port or server root specified". I've tried every *.cnf file on
the server with no luck. Do I need to compile a cnf file myself?

Russ,

Have a look at my frontpage rpm at:
http://coruscant.netrevolution.com/pub/AES/frontpage/

You simply install it, then run /etc/pkgconf/frontpage, and everything you
need is working.

Full documentation will be in http://localhost/manual/mod/other/frontpage.
You'll have two directories, serk, which is the whole documentation

Re: [expert] Kernel

2000-02-11 Thread Karsten Roemling

Hi!

I don't know exactly the behaviour of make install in kernel compilation,
but I always use make zlilo (or bzlilo if need be). This just needs a
prepared lilo.conf (i.e. with two entries, one for vmlinuz and one for
vmlinuz.old) and takes car of moving the old kernel and System.map and
stuff.

Another thing to take care of, when using kernel sourvces from the net, is
the install-path statement in the Makefile. It is set to / as standard, you
have to uncomemnt the /boot path for the kernel to go into the right
directory.

Hope this helps,

[expert] Kernel

2000-02-11 Thread Werner E. Niebel

Hi everyone...

Ive made some posts recently regarding kernel compilation/installation..

Ive tried several suggestions with no luck getting my smp stuff to
work

If I compile and install a new kernel I do:

make clean && make dep&& make bzImage && make modules && make
install && make install_modules

Right after I run lilo although I think make install does it.

The computer now boots but has problems with the sound modules (I had to
compile the AIC7xxx driver into the kernel)

If I upgrade (or downgrade my kernel) using the binaries(RPMs), what is
required to change the kernel..

Could someone please educated me a bit on what the kernel requires at
boot and educate what these things are:

initrd - I understand this is the RAM disk at boot but what needs to be
done with this if the kernel changes

System.map - Have no clue

module_info

When I try to link these manually I still get a kernel panick on my SCSI

module

Kernel panic : aic7xxx.o not compiled for current kernel ___smp.
Module was compiled for ___linus.

Something to the effect of the above line occurs.. Ive tried linking
vmlinuz and module_info and such to the new SMP info and then ran
lilo...

Im simply confused as to where the SMP module is trying to load this
from... Shouldnt it load it from the smp modules directory?

Ive even tried to pull down a redhat smp kernel module and I get this
same kernel panick. I know this kernel works since its running on an
identical machine. Consequently, I know that I must have forgotten to
link or run some script...

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Change the entry for HorizRefresh in the XF86Config-file

You can try:
- making a file /etc/kppp.allow in wich you put users' names,
each line one name.
or
- "chmod u+s pppd"

I resolved similar problems in different Linux distros.
I don't remember what I did in Mandrake.

Re: [expert] PPPD dying, return of the Jedi

2000-02-11 Thread Audrey Beck

I belive it has to do with PAP or CHAP. How to fix it, I don't know.
There have been discussions on it the newbie and expert lists. I think
it's also discussed in the PPP HOW-TO and on the mandrakeusers.org site
and linuxnewbie.org site. Try those to see if they will help.
