While it's true that you see more and more MBs without ISA slot,

Could you please give us examples (to be avoided ...) ???

Bonjour,

j'utilise Mandrake 7.1, l'ordinateur fait parti d'un réseau et je l'ai

host name + domain name: wumpscut2.domainname

If IP adress works, but not name, i'd said it is a DNS problem 99 %.
That's is the DNS task to associate a name with an adress. Here it seems
it isn't the case.
Use nslookup [IP to test] to see what's going on.

Here is the result of nslookup [myIP]:

Server: nts-oef-dhcp.XXX.YYY.com
Address: myIP

*** nts-oef-dhcp.XXX.YYY.com can't find myIP: Non-existent host/domain

So, how can I fix that? As you can see I'm totally lost. I've just checked
the IP of my DNS and it's OK.

Sorry, all i can say from your nslookup output is your box is not known
from the DNS. I think it should be a DHCP failure, as i imagine it's
DHCP server to register a new host in DNS, but i'm really not a

It's supposed to do that as far as I know. I've got an old Slackware box

No way! that stuff is "spyware" and poison to an operating system. In
linux we use gFTP, IglooFTP-PRO, ncFTP, so and so forth. gFTP supports
resume and append, and most FTP server do also so that makes gFTP a

Here's an odd thing . . . if I add freedb.freedb.org to my server list,
then kscd segv's whenever it tries to access the data base, from
QString::find().

Since it's compiled without debug info the details of the bug are
elusive. I could, if I were more enthusiastic, build a debug version
and track it down and/or contact the kscd folks, but I thought I'd first
see if somebody was already familiar with this and if it's already been
fixed.

It's easy to work around, of course; I just don't use freedb.freedb.org.

Downloader for X. It isn't integrated in the browser, like GetRight for example,
but it works nice enough... If you play a bit with the settings, you'll see
there's an option called "monitor clipboard". Activate that option, start your DfX
and minimize it, and when there's a file you wich to download, just right click
on it in the browser, and select "copy link location". A popup from Downloader
for X will appear, and you can begin downloading the file.

Odd. After I added several of the servers folks on the list suggested, I
found kscd segfaulted. I made no effort to find the problem as I had other
problems. After reading this, I removed all references to
freedb.freedb.org from the config file, /root/.kde/share/config/kscdrc. It
still segfaults. H

However, when I move the existing kscdrc file aside ("mv kscdrc
kscdrc.sav"), kscd runs and generates a new rc file. This suggests that in
my copious free time I can add the changes back in one at a time and find
the problem. In my copious free time.

I don't see any way to get the version, but the RPM package is:

root@charlesc # rpm -qf /usr/bin/kscd
kdemultimedia-1.1.2-3mdk

This on Mandrake 6.1.

Two thoughts on the problem: 1) I see that some of the lines in kscdrc have
trailing commas. Perhaps this is the problem? 2) Perhaps it is not some
specific item, but a line length or some such generic characteristic?

A download manager is something that automates the 'resume' if the

Hi Rob

I had a similar prob. The documented id & passwd of superuser/123 didn't
work.

I did the following

cd /var/zope
zpasswd -u superuser -p test access

to reset the passwd. Killed and restart Zope.

I could then authenticate onto http://localhost:8080/manage and was fine
from there.
I also tried accessing it based on my hostname but failed. I amended my
hosts file with a suitable entry and it work fine now.

Subject: [expert] Zope and Mandrake 7.1 default install.

So, how does one gain access to the Zope management
interface on an "out-of-the-box" install? (Mandrake
7.1) I've been experimenting with it as a package I
installed myself on other flavors of Linux. Yesterday
I installed a new Mandrake 7.1 box and selected zope
as on of the sets of packages. Now, the "zope"
process is running, and performing a
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/zope status" produces

zwatchdog (pid ) is running
zserver (pid ) is running

Connecting to "http://localhost:8080/manage" (ie.,
like in the default zope install) yields no results.
Connecting to "http://localhost" yields the default
Apache page.

So, how do I attach a browser session to zope?

Also, how do I find or modify the "root" password for
zope? It is set when zope is installed, but of
course, I didn't do the install, it was a Mandrake
package.

This seems to me like a Mandrake specific issue. I
could install it myself, but that seems like a waste
of effort if Mandrake has already done it, I just need
to know how to get at it. Unfortunately, searching
the Mandrake site and mailing list archive doesn't
give me any answers.

Any help would be appreciated.

[expert] Harddisk speed with UDMA66

Hi,

How is the ultimate harddisk performance with UDMA66? Although it
works fine with UDMA66,but the harddisk performance is
just like UDMA33 as below. The question is how to improve
the speed up to 20M/sec or so. My mainboard is Abit BP6

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

You can have a look at MandrakeUser.org, it has two page about hard

[expert] install X *after* Linux

2000-08-10 Thread Daniel Woods

On a test server here, X was not installed to begin with because of
disk space. Now I wanted to install X-windows and installed all the
X and Gnome rpms (after many other dependencies). When I use
startx, X-windows starts up but only gives me a terminal window.
What else do I need to do, or add to user directory, to get Gnome
up and running ?

Another thing, Xconfigurator found the on-board video card instead
of the Matrox one while pci probing. It would not allow me the choice
of changing it. Can this be changed ?

Thanks... Dan.

[expert] AGP vs PCI video cards

2000-08-10 Thread ibi

I currently have a Diamond Speedstar A-55 AGP video card that does NOT
perform under Linux. I can trade it for a Jaton/Trident Blaze chip. I've
seen Jaton supported on earlier distro's so I think it will
work--especially if I choose the PCI model.

I have a choice between a PCI or the AGP Jaton Blaze/8mb onboard. Should
the number of colors I can view be the same on both cards?

Does anyone on this list use this card?

Thanks for all your help, list.

[expert] samba problem with new disk

2000-08-10 Thread Patrick Erler

hallo MANDRAKE!

recently i added a new disk to my system (hdb).

i would like to share directories on that disk with samba like i do on
disk hda. but here comes the problem. it just don't work. i can see
the disk from the w2k-box but can't change into it.

al i get is

[2000/08/10 21:14:42, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(487)
Can't change directory to /mnt/data/quake3 (Permission denied)

in /var/log/samba/

the options, permissions and everything else of the new directories
are the same like ithe ones of the old directories...

an example:

the fstab reads:

/dev/hda1 / ext2 grpquota,usrquota 0 1
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/data ext2 grpquota,usrquota 0 0

the permissions:

directory in hda (first disk):

 1476284 drwxrwxr-x7 nobody inhouse 4096 Aug 10 20:42 transfer/

directory in hdb (new disk):

 588814 drwxrwxrwx4 nobody inhouse 4096 Aug 10 20:38 quake3/

 the smb.conf reads:

[transfer]
path = /share/transfer
writable = yes
force directory mode = 0770
create mode = 0770
force create mode = 0770
directory mode = 0770
force group = transfer
comment = achtung, jeder kann loeschen!
delete readonly = yes

[quake3]
path = /mnt/data/quake3
writable = yes
force directory mode = 755
force create mode = 755
public = yes

i log into as user pat of group inhouse..

for me it looks perfect...

btw, its samba 2.0.6...

i'm desperate

[expert] RPM content list before installing

2000-08-10 Thread Daniel Woods

When using .tar.gz or .tgz files, it is easy to see what the list
of files are. As well, you can easily untar it wherever you want.

I want to know how to do this with RPMs. I can't seem to find a
way to check the contents of an RPM or SRPM to determine *where*
it will try to install them. I want to see *what* is in the
package before I install it. The only way I can figure this out
is to install, and then do a query list (-ql), and then uninstall
if I don't like it.

Is the only way to install mdk-RPMs into /usr/local/ by using the
source RPMs ?

Thanks... Dan.

Those aren't ports, they're pid's. You have restarted inetd between
security checks, closing the one running at pid 448 and opening the one at
32668.

Because the security check script does not have the ability to define
things that are allowed to be world writeable. Therefore it just warns
about anything that is. If anyone happens to have a patch, I'm sure Yoann
would like to see it :)

Basically to turn off all logging (not recommended!!!) just put:

logging {
category default { null; };
};

in your named.conf file. Logging is explained in great detail in
named documentation, specifically in
/usr/doc/bind-8.2.2P5/html/logging.html
( assuming you have the latest bind from Mandrake distro). Don't forget
to restart named daemon after changing config file.

If you don't use NIS the you don't need that package, otherwise this
package is required for proper functioning of NIS (Network Information
Service aka Yellow Pages).

Sorry, don't know answers to the rest of your questions.

Ok, I missed that one. Using 'rpm -qp package-mdk.i586.rpm' works.
And using 'rpm -qpR package-mdk.i586.rpm' gives me dependent files.
However, if a file is missing, how do you know what package to get ?

I was trying to upgrade to Netscape 4.74, I downloaded the files plus
RPM-*.rpm files from cooker list. Trying to install RPM-*, it wanted
libbz2.so.1 which I recall from this list was bzip-*.rpm. Got that but
then current version of ImageMagick-5_2_1-*.rpm complained. Got the
latest ImageMagick-5_2_2-*.rpm, uninstalled old version, tried to install
new one. It now complains about

[root@home /test]# rpm -Uvh ImageMagick-5_2_2-6mdk_i586.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
libdps.so.1 is needed by ImageMagick-5.2.2-6mdk
libdpstk.so.1 is needed by ImageMagick-5.2.2-6mdk
[root@home /test]# locate libdps.so.1
[root@home /test]#

I saw nothing like libdps-* or dps-* on cooker, so how do I know what
package is required to satisfy ImageMagick-5_2_2-6mdk_i586.rpm ?

Thanks... Dan.

Well, this is a VOLUNTEER list. Generally, if someone knows the answer to
your question (and is interested in divulging it) you get a response.
Otherwise tough luck. You already get more than you paid for.

Those are the OLD tools (ip_portfw and ip_autofw). Kernels 2.2.x use
IPCHAINS and the howto is correct because I used it to configure my firewall
at home. NOTE: the tools are changing again in 2.4.x supposedly for the

I know I read a MS document comparing RAID performance on UDMA66, among
other things. I believe it said that UDMA66 bandwidth is maxxed out between
2 and 3 IDE drives (assuming some RAID hardware in there). The secondary
issue is PCI bus speed at 33MHx/32bit is getting very weak for today's
systems.

RE: [expert] Auto Install

2000-08-10 Thread John Rundgren

Hey...Thanks a lot...That at least got the install running

But, after the disk partitioning, when it attempts to locate installable
packages, it just errors out with the following:

"Warning: Nothing found while parsing
/tmp/test-perl-install/var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.cdrom1.cz2 at pkgs.pm line 434"

And then it dumps you back to the disk partitioning. The file does exist
and is about 3.6 MB. There's also a symbolic link to this file in the /tmp
dir.

If you attempt to continue, you are then prompted to choose either Misc.
packages or individually select packages or both. If you attempt to
continue beyond that, you just get the error

"Warning: Illegal division by zero at install_steps_gtk.pm line 303"

After that you can't do anything except CTRL+C to kill the script.

Anything else you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

yeah, we are ;p

see mandrake.com/en/heliumlast.php3

Error scenario: g_auto_install segmentation faults

When: While running g_auto_install.

Why: The ld-linux dynamic loader changed in 7.1.

Solution: Copy this g_auto_install to /tmp, then mount the installation

CD-ROM to /mnt/cdrom and run ../perl /tmp/g_auto_install in the
directory
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/bin/perl-install. This will allow you to

properly generate the auto_inst.cfg.pl file for automatic installation.

Please note that the g_auto_install program is more for power users and
many
people will not have to worry about applying this patch to their own
system.

I get the list of the files that should be available for the install.
Output to a log file and viewing it shows

"929 files in archive, uncompression method is "bzip2 -d"
list of RPMs..."

And there is indeed 929 listings.

Thanks again...

one of my "have-to-have" programs is Rpmfind. When you have to satisfy a
dependency it will find the file for you. Such as

# rpmfind libdps.so.1

It will find the file you need and download it for you. You can check it out
here:

A download manager is usually implemented as a cheap any easy form of
"spy-ware" on Mac and Win platforms. they claim to be free, and bloat up
your operating system. I've had my suspicions that they probably track
your web-viewing habits, and such, as they tightly integrate with your
browser.

What a download manager is supposed to do is support the FTP/HTTP resume
functionalities. Generally, this is done to let users of lesser operating
systems avoid re-downloading a large file after a connection is
broken. They make it in a way to feel idiot-proof.

Wget, a perfectly free program for *nix does essentially the same thing,
but does not require X or a GUI. It also has no ads, banners, and the
such, as well as consuming a tiny fraction of the memory and CPU that
download managers for Win/Mac require.

Re: [expert] RPM content list before installing

2000-08-10 Thread Don

If you open KDE using startx and then in X-Windows, you can select the RPM file,
and a box will open allowing you to view the contents before you install the
RPM file. This also allows you to browse the already installed RPM's and
uninstall those that you don't want. Only problem is one can break his system
uninstalling required files. Of course you need to be logged in as root to
install the RPM files, but you can view the contents of the RPM file as a
regular user.

I have looked in the XFree68.0.log and I don't see any errors. I see a few
warnings on:

Option "power_saver" is not used
A whole bunch of modes that it didn't like

Cannot Shadow and accelerated frame buffer

Would any of these cause Xwindows not start? I didn't anything that could

I have see X die suddenly due to your resolution set to high, try dropping
the color and resolution down. Also if you look in /var/log/XFree86.log.
Xfree is pretty good at reporting errors. Also which version of X are you
trying to run that would help as well.

KFM is really not too bad, but on some occassions, I've seen it cause some
weirdness in my laptop. Perhaps on a system that has very few resources,
KDE wasn't meant to be too light on usage. Ever tried running KDE on 16 mb
of ram? I can tell you that is not a fun experience. But usually the KDE
problems are generated when starting something like Netscape, which sucks
up the other half of your ram.

For me, I like to do things cleanly, in the console, avoiding the use of X
whenever possible, as that allows the highest level of portability between
machines of differing hardware, including machines that X hates.

Enlightenment was sweet, but I eventually stopped using it, once again
because of resource usage. Call me paranoid, but every amount of CPU power
used on a laptop translates to lost battery life. Also, when wrestling
with limited space, a lightweight WM has it's advantages.

That's not too bad, but for me, I like to start most apps from the
terminal, and can do away with a "start" bar. This was not meant as a
flame to kde, but I really have very limited use for a start bar anyhow.

That doesn't sound too bad, but I've had bad interactions with Ncurses
stuff like mc, ssh, and telnet interacting inside konsole. Especially
stuff like running Linuxconf thru telnet/ssh from a remote machine. Then
again, I much prefer using vi anyhow, just when I forget the syntax to
things. I don't prefer to use Xterm too much, because as you noted that it
still takes up too much mem. Rxvt is much better, but then once in a while
for the heck of it, Eterm, but then the background makes it impossible to
read anything without shading it.

Sounds cool, but KDE2 still hates my laptop, I'm tired of reloading stuff
on here, as I have a Sony SuperSlim notebook where the CDROM is a messed
up PCMCIA card that the MDK installer has failed to work with since 7.1.

I used to think that these applets were cool, but they just increase my
desktop clutter too much, as screen size is an issue on a laptop. These
days, I just prefer Gkrellm running with XFCE, everything is nice and
stable. When Netscape crashes, I can tell, as the CPU meter on Gkrellm
turns red. When my battery is low, similar situation. I don't really need
a docked icon in the taskbar to tell me the same thing. In fact, Gkrellm
is usually behind a couple windows most of the time, since a larger
terminal is of more use to me.

Thanks Craig, as I said, I prefer the open source, terminal friendly
approach to this. I use ssh and screen extensively across 3 or 4 computers
daily, including a laptop. The thing is that a download manager for my
laptop is impractical, as it loses the net connection every time I keep
moving it, so it is much easier to use wget on my cable modem box :)

Also, I'm sick of those lying windows apps that claim to accelerate your
browsing, and "remember" your passwords, as I've had suspicions on those
too. Too bad that these apps had good ideas, but were just too closed
source, making spying more difficult to detect for the average user.

These were among my list of grievances for abandoning windows :)

How does what work? MandrakeUpdate? Pretty simple... you point it
to a site and it tells you what's available and lets you
download/install it. Like I said, I don't know if it (yet) will do
what the Helix updater does (it was written initially as a means to
download new updates for bad or vulnerable packages shipped in the
distro). I don't usually use MandrakeUpdate myself preferring to
just use rpm -Fvh * on my nfs mounted mirror.

I feel sure the original questioner was referring to the ability of
the Windows GetRight downloader to divide the file to be downloaded
into up to 10 (number is user-specified) contiguous equal chunks and
download them all in parallel, resulting in a single downloaded file,
but up to 10 times faster download.

No respondent has yet identified any Linux download software with

Just drop the RPM on to a kpackage window and click the File List
tab. Each file in the list will be green ticked or red crossed
depending on whether it is already installed or not.

I also read that Midnight Commander (mc) treats RPM files as
psuedo-directories which contain all the RPM component files.

10 times faster? Me thinks you are dreaming. Bandwidth is bandwidth, and
there's only so much. Whether you set up 10 simultaneous downloads or do
only one, you are going to get the file in the same period of time.

Get Right just makes sure you don't waste a lot of time if your download
craps out in the middle. It's basically a REST function for http file
transfers =)

FTP is still the way to go.

Actually one did, he simply didn't mention that particular feature:
Dowloader for X. An excerpt from the site's features list (found at
http://www.krasu.ru/soft/chuchelo/features.php3):

Ability to run without X interface
Ability to split file to separate parts (up to 10) and download all
