Re: [expert] Cannot Mount / (root) via NFS
Jeremy Schaeffer wrote: > I did everything in the NFS Howto and looked over the NFS man pages and > nowhere do I find a solution. I get the same results on every machine. I > can mount any mount point other than / (root). Thanks!! When nfs was moved into the kernel (knfsd) it became impossible to mount a remote root directory, for security reasons, they said. After mounting, it also became impossible to see stuff beyond a remote mount point (kfm only shows a blank). The morals are: 1. No mounting of remote root directories. For a system backup (say) from a remote machine you must export and mount separately bin/ etc/ boot/ home/ opt/ root/ usr/ dev/ lib/ misc/ sbin/ var/ and tar from each to a separate tar file, which is much safer than just one huge tar file and avoids tryng to tar from /proc, /dev, or /mnt. Only the latest tar will successfully backup and restore /dev. 2. This new kernel nfs will not traverse over remote mount points, but you can mount an export located beyond or at the remote mount point, even if it involves a change of filesystem type, so there is no overall functional restriction. This means you have to set up exports and mount points and fstab entries explicitly for each remote file system directory or mounted mount point you want to mount as an export. This actually is much safer, although it leads to longer exports lists. To fix this was on the to-do list for kernel 2.2 - in kernel 2.4 this may be relaxed. An alternative for you might be to not use the kernel knfsd but use the older user-space nfs, if it is still distributed by Mandrake or you can obtain it. It is of course slower, but suffers from neither of these restrictions. -- Regards, Ron. [AU] Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.
Re: [expert] Update problems from 7.1 to 7.2
Thanks Guys. My intent was not to bask the Linux OS, I use it daily, more than the Gates alternative. I've worked on Unix for more than 16 years. In my terms, an update changes the release of the OS. If you are running one release over another, there is generally some innate understanding of what is going to replace what, and which configuration files have New Configuration values. New Releases of Software, generally accept what is in place and request additional configuration assistance, as required. My general understanding of the Unix Community is that there is some understanding of what is already installed and what has changed. I agree, Fresh Installations will always be faster. Updates on non-Gates-ware, is usually pain-free. You can accept the fact that the installation path is always the answer, I don't. In fact I believe that the Non-technical user which doesn't understand the difference between a Portmapper and Daemon, shouldn't. An if they were to attempt the update of their Linux-Mandrake 7.1 system to 7.2, that they should. And it should work, 100% of the time, or at least close to it. There will always be exceptions. I realize that there is a New Linux Portability team attempting to make the installation, configuration and upgrades of Linux as non-technical as possible. It would help if the installation/update software were able to determine General Features to make this team's implementation easier. One last thing, if Mandrakesoft had not intended the update of the Linux-Mandrake software releases with their software update function, then they shouldn't put it in writing in the manual. No I don't believe everything I see, but I do trust Linux Based software and distributors significantly more than Gates-ware supporters. Don't you? [expert] some 7.2 problems!
Hey all.. I have few more little bitty problems with 7.2 that I hope can be answered.. First, I was the one who posted a few days ago about the voodoo banshee card not installing right with 7.2 or RH 7 beta using Xfree 4.0. I never did solve it, but solved it by buying a new Matrox G400.. Not only did this FIX my problem, it also cured a long standing problem I've had since I started running Linux.. Memory use by X.. KDE in any distro would use ( according to top ) 75-79M worth of ram.. Gnome w/ e or sawmill, 91M.. I always figured this was just simply too much.. Well, under the G400, X use KDE 2.0 is a mere 47 M. So, not only did this card set up right, my system is much more snappy than I've ever had in Linux ( since the banshee is the only card I've owned since running linux ).. The G400 installed flawless in Linux, win of course, and BeOS, I simply *did nothing* .. :) Now, to the problems.. First, booting into runlevel 5, REGARDLESS OF WHAT WM I CHOOSE, Window Maker starts.. I have to exit it, then I get the mandrake or now helix-gnome login ( I added helix gnome ).. How do I fix this? Which leads me to question 2 and 2a.. :) When I DO get the Helix Gnome login, it DOESN'T CONTAIN GNOME.. ?? duh huh? ANy thoughts how to fix I would appreciate.. Now, the Mandrake GUI Login DID contain gnome, and I don't really care which one I use.. I saw this a while back and searched the mandrake archives but didn't find the answer.. How can I change the gui login from the helix-gnome one back to the mandrake with the penguins?? Thanks as always! Mandrake 7.2 looks nice, and I like KDE 2.0 quite a bit.. RE: [expert] pop-3
It is something your provider can only do. If you have a static IP address, the best thing to do is go to www.zoneedit.com and setup your own addresses. Then go to who you registered your domain with and change your domain to zoneedit's name servers. This way YOU have control of everything and you don't have to rely on scottsboro.org getting it right. This is what I did for my two domains. My LM box runs postfix for email and apache for http access. Now to find time to make me some web pages. I run my own DNS server for my local LAN. If you need help, let me know. You need some other user space utils, to share roots between boxes. Even I don't know if it is possible. "root on nfs" means that you can have a diskless client kitty that mounts its root from musha:/export/kitty_root, and hope mounts musha:/export/hope_root. That needs net and nfs on the kernel. And is the easy setup. Suppose you want to mount musha:/export/root_for_clients both in hope and kitty, a shared root is not directly possible, there are files that are not read-only and both clients try to write in them (/var mainly). And imagine both the clients and the server at the same time. So the I have seen a special setup tool (i think it includes kernel and user space tools) to build a cluster of diskless nodes. Re: [expert] pop-3
rharvey wrote: > > so do I need to setup a mx record on my linux box or have my provider set > this up correctly on their dns ? Robert - It looks like you have an MX record already. Your MX record points to a machine called "server1.rdcomputersolutions.net". The problem is that there is no A (address) record for server1.rdcomputersolutions.net. So when someone tries to send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED], their mail system first does an MX record lookup and finds out "to send e-mail to someone at rdcomputersolutions.net, you must send it to the machine server1.rdcomputersolutions.net". Then, it does an A record lookup on server1.rdcomputersolutions.net to get its IP address, but since there is no A record, the mail software can't get the IP address, so it can't send the mail. At this point, the simplest route is probably to ask the person handling your DNS to add an A record for server1.rdcomputersolutions.net or, if that's not the machine where you want your mail going, to change the MX record to point to the proper machine. - Jeff Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.
Re: [expert] pop-3
Your ISP (or whoever manages your domain's DNS) set's up the MX record. It's DNS level information. The MX tells a mail server where to send mail when an email is sent with out using a fully qualifed computer name. i.e. rdcomputersolutions.net specifies a domain, but not a particular computer. mail.rdcomputersolutions.net specifies an exact machine/server/computer. DNS provides the MX record so that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is a valid email address. Keep in mind that an email address is officially user@computer where computer is an exact pointer to a valid server. your MX record says that server1.rdcomputersolutions.net is the default computer to send mail to if a real computer name is not given. Currently, your DNS has no record of the IP for server1.rdcomputersolutions.net. However, your DNS does have a valid IP on record for mail.rdcomputersolutions.net which is the normal convention for a default mail server in a given domain. The *ISP* needs to either give server1.rdcomputersolutions.net a valid IP or change your domain's MX record to reflect mail.rdcomputersolutions.net which appears to point to your server. Until then, fix your loopback issue Bill has pointed out and set your email client to use [EMAIL PROTECTED] as a reply-to address. To fix your loopback problem, tell postfix that it should accept mail for rdcomputersolutions.net and mail.rdcomputersolutions.net (or server1.rdcomputersolutions.net if you choose to keep that as your server's name or both to be safe) So if I read Postfix's instuctions correctly (I use qmail or sendmail myself) you need in /etc/postfix/main.cf myorigin = $mydomain mydestination = $mydomain, $myhostname, localhost, localhost.localdomain alternatively (this should all be on one line, mail program may break it up) mydestination = rdcomputersolutions.net, mail.rdcomputersolutions.net, server1.rdcomputersolutions.net, localhost, localhost.localdomain The mydesitnation variable needs to contain a comma separated list of all the computer names that this server should accept mail for. $mydomain and $myhostname appear to be place holders for the obvious values. To accept mail for mail.rdcomputersolutions.net, you need to add that to the mydestination line (or change your hostname to mail.rdcomputersolutions.net) Good luck, Woody rharvey wrote: > > so do I need to setup a mx record on my linux box or have my provider set > this up correctly on their dns ? > - Original Message - > From: "Bill Shirley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Saturday, November 04, 2000 6:52 PM > Subject: RE: [expert] pop-3 > > > You can look your mx record by using nslookup: > > > > [root@elmo msg]# nslookup -type=mx rdcomputersolutions.net > > Server: elmo.lan.shirleyfamily.net > > Address: 192.168.4.1 > > > > rdcomputersolutions.net preference = 10, mail exchanger = > > server1.rdcomputersolutions.net > > rdcomputersolutions.net nameserver = ns1.scottsboro.org > > rdcomputersolutions.net nameserver = ns2.scottsboro.org > > ns1.scottsboro.org internet address = 12.21.132.2 > > ns2.scottsboro.org internet address = 12.21.132.3 > > > > [root@elmo msg]# ping server1.rdcomputersolutions.net > > ping: unknown host server1.rdcomputersolutions.net > > > > [root@elmo msg]# ping rdcomputersolutions.net > > ping: unknown host rdcomputersolutions.net > > > > [root@elmo msg]# ping mail.rdcomputersolutions.net > > PING mail.rdcomputersolutions.net (12.21.134.137): 56 data bytes > > > > --- mail.rdcomputersolutions.net ping statistics --- > > 8 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss > > > > You have no IP address for your domain (rdcomputersolutions.net) > > or the host (server1.rdcomputersolutions.net) that your MX record > > is pointing to. Here are my results (Comments inter-sperced, Conclusion at the end): ### Begin mail Subject: Returned mail: Host unknown (Name server: server1.rdcomputersolutions.net.: no data known) Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2000 16:46:23 -0700 From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The original message was received at Sat, 4 Nov 2000 16:46:22 -0700 from woodchuck.linif.org [192.168.1.2] - The following addresses had permanent fatal errors - <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - Transcript of session follows - 550 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... Host unknown (Name server: server1.rdcomputersolutions.net.: no data known) ### End mail Now here is what's interesting, your MX is set to server1.rdcomputersolutions.net. Let's look at what DNS has to say about that: ### Start Results [woody@woody woody]$ nslookup Default Server: mikey.ida.net Address: 204.228.203.1 > set querytupe=MX > rdcomputersolutions.net Server: mikey.ida.net Address: 204.228.203.1 Non-authoritative answer: rdcomputersolutions.net preference = 10, mail exchanger = server1.rdcomputersolutions.net Authoritative answers can be found from: rdcomputersolutions.net nameserver = NS1.SCOTTSBORO.ORG rdcomputersolutions.net nameserver = NS2.SCOTTSBORO.ORG NS1.SCOTTSBORO.ORG internet address = 12.21.132.2 NS2.SCOTTSBORO.ORG internet address = 12.21.132.3 > exit [woody@woody woody]$ nslookup server1.rdcomputersolutions.net Server: mikey.ida.net Address: 204.228.203.1 *** mikey.ida.net can't find server1.rdcomputersolutions.net: Non-existent host/domain [woody@woody woody]$ ### End Results Usually the MX is set for mail.domain (mail.rdcomputersolutions.net in your case) Now notice what I found. (note: I was unable to traceroute or ping this address although I did successfully telnet to port 25 and 80 but there seemed to be no daemon(s) to accept my commands) ### Start Results [woody@woody woody]$ nslookup mail.rdcomputersolutions.net Server: mikey.ida.net Address: 204.228.203.1 Non-authoritative answer: Name:mail.rdcomputersolutions.net Address: 12.21.134.137 [woody@woody woody]$ ping mail.rdcomputersolutions.net PING mail.rdcomputersolutions.net (12.21.134.137) from 204.228.204.18 : 56(84) bytes of data. --- mail.rdcomputersolutions.net ping statistics --- 2 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss [woody@woody woody]$ ### End Results Conclusion: Your ISP (whoever does your DNS for rdcomputersolutions.net) needs to either adjust your mail exchanger (MX entry) to mail.rdcomputersolutions.net (assumes that is your server) or set the correct IP in your domain's DNS for server1.rdcomputersolutions.net. Personnaly, I would ask that they use mail.rdcomputersolutions.net and set it's IP to your mail server as that's standard Internet convention. If your ISP says it's setup correctly, send them a copy of my results. pop-3 is how you retrieve your mail from a server. "on demand" is fine for this and isn't causing your problem. You provide so little information about what you are trying to do, I doubt anyone will be able to help you. What is the mail server named? Are you using sendmail, postfix, etc.? Re: [expert] pop-3
Robert, Do not confuse POP-3 with SMTP. POP-3 is a way to RETRIEVE mail only. When you send mail, you utilize SMTP. It sounds like the most likely explanation is independent of all of the above though. Either your SMTP options in your E-mail program are incorrect (i.e.: an invalid SMTP host) or the DNS server (that the SMTP server you connect to to send mail) can not correctly resolve the domain of your mail host that is the final delivery point. The (traveling) life of an E-mail - Sender's mail client sends mail (SMTP) to it's listed SMTP host. The SMTP host then decides if the user is local: Yes, Skip to Drop step No, Pass mail on Pass mail onto server that holds the desired recipient (again utilizing SMTP) Drop mail into recipient's mailbox Recipient checks for mail (POP-3) - As for on-demand POP-3, that is controlled by the inetd daemon. When a request to the POP-3 port is received, inetd calls the POP-3 server program which then processes the actual request (to retrieve user's mail). The same goes for IMAP if you choose to *retrieve* your mail that way. Summary: your POP-3 settings on your server should not have anything to do with your server's ability to receive mail. Look either at your sending e-mail program's SMTP setting and/or check that your server's DNS entry is current and correct. Re: [expert] Xfree 4.0.1 problem
You're right, acceleration only works in 16bpp modes on the voodoo3. I get the same results with both Mandrake's X server and 3dfx's. Both give me blue and yellow dotted lines across the screen. Disabling hardware acceleration gets rid of the lines, but I'd rather keep acceleration enabled. Re: [expert] LM 7.2 Installation Fails at mkbootdisk/install boot loader
I don't know why the installation is failing, but the big problem I see is that you do not have a kernel image in your boot directory. You should have at least 1 kernel image there. There is also no System.map. Maybe during install you are de-selecting all the Kernel images options ?? On Sat, 04 Nov 2000 13:03:11 Tony K. I've also got a HPT-366 on a BE6 and one IBM hard drive. I can't help you with the first problem but I initially got the same error as you you did on your second attempt. The problem was I had installed with the hard drive optimisation option on. Installing with it off resulted in no problems. Afterwards you can turn on DMA etc with hdparm and I am not having any problems so far. -- P.bone email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.
[expert] Playing MIDI files
Can anyone help here? I'm running LM7.1 + W98. I'm reconciled to having to go across to W98 for recording, as that's where the sequencer (Sound Studio Gold) lives, and I like using it, quite apart from not having found a decent sequencer for linux. Also, if I'm recording, I generally have 3-4 hour sessions, so changing OS is no particular hassle. BUT, it would be nice to be able to replay thru Linux. kmidi will only replay thru my synth, which is no use because I want the (AWE64) soundcard. kmid, I just can't get any sense from. I tried using winamp thru wine, but it won't play MIDI files - it will in windows. (Winamp will play mp3 files thru linux, so something's working) Ronnie Whipp Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.
[expert] LM 7.2 Installation Fails at mkbootdisk/install boot loader
Attempted to install from a freshly made CD-ROM (ISO image) but all attempts fail in the following sequence: - Create a boot disk: I place a freshly formatted (DOS/FAT 1.44MB in A Drive) diskette in the drive and ask it to create the boot disk. It doesn't appear to even access the floppy drive (no access light indication) and immediately results in the message "An error occurred. mkbootdisk failed." I try the other options for creating the boot disk that the installation program tries but they too result in the same problem. I then go to the next step. - Install boot loader: As soon as this sequence starts the system responds with the message "An error occurred. Can't use an undefined value as a HASH reference." I briefly see a LILO type message fly past in the bottom 'help area' of the installation screens but it is so quick that I can't actually read it. The installation then thinks everything is fine and carries on to where it ejects the CD-ROM and then reboots which results in the following message "Loading Linux. Boot sector signature not found." Mounting the disk in BeOS I can see that the /boot directory looks like this: $ cd boot $ ls -alg total 15 dr-xr-xr-x 3 baronusers1024 Nov 4 05:24 . dr-xr-xr-x 20 baronusers1024 Nov 4 05:37 .. -r--r--r-- 1 baronusers6132 Oct 3 05:18 boot-menu.b -r--r--r-- 1 baronusers4380 Oct 3 05:18 boot-text.b lr-xr-xr-x 1 baronusers 0 Nov 4 05:24 boot.b -> boot-menu.b -r--r--r-- 1 baronusers 612 Oct 3 05:18 chain.b dr-xr-xr-x 2 baronusers1024 Nov 4 05:24 grub -r--r--r-- 1 baronusers 640 Oct 3 05:18 os2_d.b My image file: -rw--- 1 baronusers680378368 Oct 30 18:40 Mandrake72-inst.iso I have downloaded and burned two CD-ROMs (from different ftp sites) now of the ISO image and neither have worked. This image came from: biglinux.tccw.wku.edu Please note that I have installed numerous Linux systems on this machine included 7.1 in exactly the same manner and this is the first time I have seen this type of problem. [expert] Cannot Mount / (root) via NFS
Hi! I cannot seen to find anyone that can answer why I cannot mount / (root) via NFS on Mandrake 7.0/7.1. I have three 7.0 Machines, one with a 2.2.16 kernel , one with a recompiled kernel with CONFIG_ROOT_NFS turned on, one with the stock kernel and a 7.1 with the stock kernel. None of them let me mount / , I get (logged in as root) mount -t nfs musha:/ /mnt/misc mount: musha:/ failed, reason given by server: Permission denied I can mount any other dir, for example: (on machine hoffen ) mount -t nfs musha:/mnt/cdrom /mnt/misc or mount -t nfs musha:/usr/local /mnt/misc works fine, exports (on musha) looks like: / hoffen(rw,no_root_squash) hope(rw,no_root_squash) kitty(rw,no_root_squash) /mnt/cdrom hoffen(ro,no_root_squash) hope(ro,no_root_squash) kitty(ro,no_root_squash) /usr/local hoffen(rw,no_root_squash) hope(rw,no_root_squash) kitty(rw,no_root_squash) hoffen, hope, musha, and kitty are my machine names I did everything in the NFS Howto and looked over the NFS man pages and nowhere do I find a solution. I get the same results on every machine. I can mount any mount point other than / (root). Thanks!! Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

I'm not stupid...and maybe this is a bug. But why the hell won't this work? I am running 7.2 w/KDE. I have used the menu editor to modify the "shortcut" to load nmapfe as follows: /usr/bin/kdesu -s /usr/bin/nmapfe If I type this in at a command prompt I get prompted for root's password, which is what I want. But when I put the same command line in the menu nmapfe runs as the user I am logged on as. This is getting annoying. Because of this the framebuffer kernel is not installed on the system. This XFree86-server package will correct the problem and should be installed in the following manner: - Install 7.1 on your computer if you have not already done so. If you choose the recommended install method, you will have to reset the computer near the end because the X server will automatically be tested. - Restart the computer in runlevel 3 (text mode). - Uninstall the XFree86-glide-module if it is installed (it will be if you chose recommended install) by using: rpm -e XFree86-glide-module - Install the XFree86-server-4.0.1-26mdk.i586.rpm package listed below by using: rpm -Uvh XFree86-server-4.0.1-26mdk.i586.rpm - Execute /usr/sbin/XFdrake as root and select the resolution and color depth you wish to use. Do not perform a configuration test. Select whether you want to use the X server at startup or not. - Change to the /etc/X11 directory by using: cd /etc/X11 - You must redo the symbolic link for the installed X server by using: ln -sf ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X - You may then start the X server by using: startx Please verify these md5 checksums of the updates prior to upgrading to ensure the integrity of the downloaded package. You can do this by running the md5sum program on the downloaded package by using "md5sum package.rpm". You can download the updates directly from: ftp://ftp.linux.tucows.com/pub/distributions/Mandrake/Mandrake/updates ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrake/updates Or try one of the other mirrors listed at: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3. Updated packages are available in the "updates/[ver]/RPMS/" directory. For example, if you are looking for an updated RPM package for Linux-Mandrake 7.2, look for it in "updates/7.2/RPMS/". Updated source RPMs are available as well, but you generally do not need to download them. [expert] Two questions about cups
Hi! I have problems with network printing with cups. First I tried to configure samba for cups According to the cups manual, all I had to do is to ensure the print line in smb.conf is printing = cups. Well, my win machine doesn't complain, but I neither get anything output from my printer! In the /var/log/cups/errors file, I can see that printer jobs are started from the win machine, but nothing happens. Then I tried to configure another Linux box to print out using the cups server. I tried both as anonymous and with login, but the server refused to print from the other host. From the server machine itself, all prints fine, but printing from the network is hard. Please help!
