[expert] Upgrading to X v4

2001-01-15 Thread Michael Leone

I'm interested in upgrading from my current 3.3.6 (which came with LM
7.2), and moving up to the latest X 4.0.2.

1. I'm using a Diamond Viper V770 video board (i.e., Rvia TNT2 chip).
I've heard both - that it doesn't work well (causes slow downs), and
that it works well. :-)

2. If I do decide to upgrade, am I correct in assuming that all I would
need to do is use Mandrake Update, and choose anything that says
"XFree", v4?

2a. Does Xconfigurator still work? Or has it been replaced with a
different config tool?

Rob!

I have been using xfce for several years as my main WM.

Click on the "pallette looking icon on the main-panel above
the "quit" button.
Click the XFce tab
Unclick the "Show subprocess diagnostic dialog"
Click "Apply" then "okay"

That "should" take care of it.

David,

Theres a cool little DOS like GUI on Mandrake called Taper. You start it from
a command line like this:

taper -T

My tape drive is SCSI so I use a command something like this;

taper -T st0

I'm not real sure exactly what the device name for a paralell port device
such as yours, but I'm sure the program info might be able to tell you a
little more about it.

To tell you the truth I much rather Sendmail over postfix. It's a much more

send and receive mail not provide for system security. Thats a job better

In my setup, pravda.tenzo.net is the linux box that the printer hp4050 is
connected to. As you can see, I'm stumbling a bit on syntax. I've tried
various permutations of your papd.conf, including:

hp4050:\
  :pr=lp:\
  :op=nobody:\
  :pd=/etc/atalk/ppds/hp4050.ppd:

This was the original papd.conf I used with Red Hat / lpr.

hp4050:hp4050@pravda:\
  :pr=lp:\
  :op=daemon:\
  :pd=/etc/atalk/ppds/hp4050.ppd

In both of the above cases, when I print from a Mac, I get the original error
messaage: "The document [doc_name] could not be printed. A connection was
made to the printer, but the printer is currently not responding to queries."
(MacOS Error -8993)

hp4050:hp4050@pravda:\
  :pr=|/usr/bin/lp -d hp4050:\
  :op=daemon:\
  :pd=/etc/atalk/ppds/hp4050.ppd

hp4050:\
  :pr=|/usr/bin/lp -d hp4050:\
  :op=daemon:\
  :pd=/etc/atalk/ppds/hp4050.ppd

In both these cases, the print job spools and then clears in the LaserJet
status window. It's as though it has spooled and gone to print, but never
does. No error on the Mac end.

I'm thinking it has to do with authentication but I don't know enough about
how that works. Would you have any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Which version of wu-ftpd? If you're using the updated version via
MandrakeUpdaet, please upgrade again if this is for any version of
Mandrake less than 7.2. The pam configuration files (/etc/pam.d/ftp)
are different between 7.2 and 7.1 and the 7.2 file was mistakenly used
in all of the updates instead of just the 7.2 update. This was
corrected today, so please try to update to the .6mdk for 6.x and
7.0/7.1 if that is what version of Mandrake you are using.

[expert] Xfce

2001-01-15 Thread rob

Greetings all,

I have recently been using Xfce as my window manager and am very happy with
its zip and economy of resource usage. However, I am starting to become
quite irritated with a recurring appearance of a box that pops up entitled:
Subprocess Diagnostic

The last message that appeared in this box was: "unknown child process 2904
died"

Just a few minutes ago, it popped up with: usr/bin/xfhelp:/usr/share/xfce=:No
such file or directory netscape-communicator:not running on display:0.0

[I was running Netscape at the time with no problems]

More typically though, this i the message I seem to be getting with an
irritating regularity: QObject::connect:No such signal KIO::DeleteJob::data
(KIO::job*, const QByteArray&)
QObject::connect:(sendername: 'job')
QOjbect:: connect:(receivername "unnamed')

If anyone has a clue as to what the above is all about and how to prevent
what is happening, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Rob

I'm having problems with wu-ftpd. When users attempt to login they get a

inetd is working but cannot hand off the task to wu-ftpd. I have installed the

but WHAT? and WHERE?

When I run a local port scan it shows port 21 up and running (again indicating

I have the older version of netatalk, but I had the same problem when
first using cups

To get it working the first thing that I did was create the following
file as /etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd This lets things that want to print to
lpd find something that simulates lpd

#
# cups-lpd -- print from mac
#

service printer
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = lp
server = /usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-lpd
}

then tweaked papd.conf to look like this to print on the "Basement"
printer attached to Homer

Basement:Basement@Homer:\
 :pr=|/usr/bin/lp -d Basement:\
 :op=daemon:\
 :pd=/etc/cups/ppd/Basement.ppd

Restarted xinetd, cups & atalk and everything worked OK. I assume that
you had a working papd & ppds configs previously. I did not need to
change mine

[expert] KDE 2.1 CVS 20010115 RPM's Available

2001-01-15 Thread Christopher Molnar

Hello,

I have just uploaded RPM's for KDE 2.1 CVS as of 2001-01-15. These RPM's are
available on any Mandrake-devel (cooker) mirror site. You can find a list of
the mirror sites on: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/cooker/. These RPM's are
for Mandrake 7.2 and Mandrake 7.1 users.

The files are in the Mandrake-devel/unsupported/i586/kde2.1 directory on
these mirrors. The files where placed on the master internal site at 20:11
EST (-05:00) so they may take a while to distribute. These will be the last
Mandrake 7.2 Update RPM's prior to Beta 2 (I'll be out of town).

Please report packaging bugs to me. All code and functionality related bugs
should go to: http://bugs.kde.org, or choose Help--> Report Bugs from any KDE
2 application.

These updates are not supported by Mandrake, which is why they are in the
unsupported directories.

Also, New England Business Services, LLC, at http://www.nebsllc.com , is
making a limited number of KDE 2.1 update CD's available to U.S. customers.
Advance ordering is required and the profit from these CD's helps defray the
expenses of creating and distributing updates.

If that doesn't work .. let me know .. and i'll send over all the settings I

it doesn't work. But, you can go to that directory, right click, create link
to application, change the name to konqueror and save it by exiting. Then
open that file with an editor and replace all the text with the text I gave
you and then save it. I just tried that and it works fine. Let me know if
that works. If not we'll get another work-around for you.

[expert] DRI direct sloow, how to debug/trace (please)?

2001-01-15 Thread Svante Signell

Hello list,

I've been trying for a while now to get my 3dfx Voodoo Banshee to work
in openGL mode together with X4/DRI and 2.2/2.4 kernels. Starting with
MDK 7.2 (X-4.0.1, kernel-2.2.17, glibc-2.1) and upgrading to the
cooker distribution (X-4.0.2, kernel 2.4.0/2.2.18, glibc-2.2) still
some games (such as UT) don't run fully HW accelerated :( For X-3.3.x
Glide was a usable alternative for those games supporting glide2x/3x.

The situation is as follows:

glxinfo reports direct rendering
gears: OK around 600 fps

Q3A: OK, no problem, using libGL.so.1,2 from Mesa-3.4
HG2: OK
Heretic 2: OK after full screen patch 1.06a
sof-demo: OK
descent3-demo: not OK
ut(436): not OK. The introductory video 'never' finishes. Sound hacks
on and off and video runs at normal speed, the suddenly slows down,
normal speed again, slows down, creeps Same when in game mode.
Since the Glide libraries in UT requires libglide.so.2 and this is not
supported in X4, this option is no alternative!?

The following list is what I'm suspecting to be problematic:

1. IRQ?
Both the sound card and the Banshee (AGP) card share the same
interrupt, 5. Earlier a 100MB Ethernet card was in the slot, _also_
sharing IRQ 5. Removing the NIC did not change anything, now the NIC
is on IRQ 3 and the slot with IRQ 5 occupies a pcTV card.

2. Sound card?
The sound card (on board) shares the same IRQ 5 with the Banshee
card. Unloading all sound drivers before starting X did not change
anything.

3. Memory/disk swapping?
For the problematic games more than 100 % of total memory (128 MB) is
used. If virtual memory is used swapping to disk slows down?? Also two
processes are running, is this normal (single CPU, 450MHz)?

4. AGP?
It it normal for the 4.0.2 Banshee driver not to use agpgart?

# /sbin/lsmod

ModuleSizeUsed by
tdfx 37360 2
agpgart 18960 0 [tdfx]
  |
not used??

Please, anyone give me a hint how to proceed the tracking down the
causes of problems. More info on request.

Thanks in advance,
Svante

[expert] Printing problem with Netatalk-1.5pre3-1 / CUPS

2001-01-15 Thread Michael O'Henly

Hi there...

Are there any significant issues with this version of Netatalk that would
make it preferable to fall back to an earlier release?

My network is a linux box with two Macs on an internal network (eth0) and a
cable internet connection (eth1). Connected locally to the linux box is an HP
LaserJet 4050. Previously, I have run netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.3-4 under Red
Hat 6.2, which allowed the two Macs to print to the 4050 with no problems.

I'm now using Mandrake 7.2 on the linux box and I've installed
Netatalk-1.5pre3-1. Some of the complicating factors are (1) that I'm running
a firewall, and (2) that I'm running CUPS (versus lpr under Red Hat).

When I print from either Mac (running different versions of MacOS, both of
which printed correctly using etatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.3-4), I get an error that
says, "The document [doc_name] could not be printed. A connection was made to
the printer, but the printer is currently not responding to queries." This is
MacOS Error -8993.

I definitely have connectivity -- i.e., I can ping both ways and the Macs can
get to the internet. I've temporarily taken down the firewall and this has
had no visible effect (plus I've added a rule which gives the two Macs full
access to the linux box when the firewall is running).

So I've concluded that this is a problem with my CUPS configuration and I'm
kinda dreading troubleshooting it.

If you have any experience with CUPS in a Mac/Linux environment , I'd be
really pleased to hear from you. (In the meantime, I'm going to remove this
version of Netatalk and install the older one.)

Cheers.

M.

I have found that sometimes (I have not looked as to why) that the

[expert] cups config

2001-01-15 Thread Bill Kenworthy

Hi,
can someone post the active parts of their cups configuration files - I
am particularly after cupsd.conf? In trying to get another linux
machine to print to mine using various graphical clients (kups etc), I
have managed to deny printing to everyone except root! After install,
at least I could print from a user on the same machine, but no others
would connect to it. What I am after is something that uses no
password/authorisation etc (behind firewall) for two machines. cups
seems a dead loss - way too complex and flaky compared to lpr - seems
designed for a large group of machines not a single desktop/small home
network!

Same here with Gnapster as of five minutes ago. I saw here that knapster was
still working, but that link is dead at freshmeat. gnome-napster has been killed

This was the problem. I had originally setup X to run at 24. However, I found a
new problem. A few of the DrakConf modules die here looking for Gtk.pm. Turns
out this is a Helix related issue. Helix replaced
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/Gtk.pm (and a few others) with
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/Gtk.pm thus killing a lot of the DrakConf modules.

I manually edited /etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and set the
default to 16 bpp. This gets tux* and Q3A up and running. However, I also added
a "1280x1024" res to the list for 8, 16, 24, and 32 bpp, but I don't get it -
10x7 is the max in X.

Once I figure these last couple of issues out I should be up and running.

Thanks!

I was wondering when someone else would experience this.

There is a problem with the supplied /etc/smb.conf file. Edit the file
and add the "-r" switch to the "print command =" line, which will force
cups to delete the file afterwards.

I'd been using GNOME for about eighteen months before switching to KDE a
month or so ago. There are still a lot of things I like about GNOME but KDE
strikes me as being much better orchestrated: things work seamlessly and very
economically.

Konqueror is an absolute gem! It's the first application I've seen that
really breaks down the barriers between the desktop and the net by
transparent and intuitive.

I wish Eazel well but Konqueror rules on my desktop.

doesn't work with latest version of bonobo [stupid hard coded
dependency]. Eazel also have a really bad attitude on eazel services -
they review and let you downl;oad all sorts of apps, just as long as
they're nothing to do with QT/KDE. I think that's childish. GNOME people
use KDE apps. KDE people use GNOME apps.

I'm waiting for the release of Windows where the Start Menus is divided

Red Hat 6.2 are still more popular than 7 wil ever be, and will likely
remain so. Red Hat fucked up *royally* with version seven, and the
reputation of Linux as a whole is suffereing now that Red Hat have a
release thats binary incompatible with ALL other distributions.

Nobody has to stay with older distros apart from Red Hat users [like my

Totally. Glibc isn't the problem. Veryhting works fine with newer
versions of glibc. *Red Hat aren't using a new version of anything.
They're using a BETA version*. That's why everyone is annoyed.

That's already happened. I don't consider Mandrake to be Red Hat

test against Red Hat 6.2, comaptible with all other distributions ont he

No, Loki have updates the game since its original release quite
significantly. I think Loki do a brillaint job and have stacks of
resources on their site for helping you out. Try downloading the update

That's *really* unusual. The only games I know which don't run with X4

2001-01-15 Thread Bob [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I need to have a shell script (and/or CGI) be able to modify the
contents of an existing file (to which it has permission). Let's say
that somewhere in the file "test.conf", there is a line that says
"test=on". I would like to be able to change that one line to
"test=off" or "test=something else". I don't want anything else in the
file modified - stuff before or after this line.

How do I do it?

Bob

Re: [expert] (Dumb question time) to improve the yield from my sendmail

2001-01-15 Thread Andrew George

Hi
I think you did something gaga when you used it last time, Postfix delivers
to /var/spool/mail/ and I've never had a hassle with using pine
with it.
Tom's got a very good article on setting it up at Mandrake-User.org, theres
also a very nice howto on the Redhat site (which put me on to
sender-canonical maps). Most of the time it will work straight out of the box
and only need a bit of config tweaking.

FWIW, I haven't tried to boot Linux nor download music since around
Thanksgiving. I just cranked up Warpster for OS/2, and find no apparent

Sorry for the dumb questions.

I once tried postfix and I think I must have cocked it up
horribly.

It was the version from Mandrake 6.0 or 6.1 I think,
does the new version work better or did I schplum something
up when setting it all up?

What happened was, I noticed that pine and any other
e mail app would not be able to pick up e mail,
does the mail arrive in /var/spool/mail as in sendmail
or another folder and is it in the same plain text format?

Where might I have gibbled up the config for postfix,
as I would like to try it again and see if I can have a
little newer running system and make some improvements,
and what would be a safe way to migrate from sendmail
to postfix without losing any mails?

Many thanks for your patience.

[expert] What is XFree86-compat-3.3.6?

2001-01-15 Thread Praedor Tempus

I am presently downloading the XFree86-4.0.2-4mdk.src.rpm which I will build
and install in hopes that it will fix some problems with my current
4.0.2-1mdk. I see in the directory that there is an XFree86-compat-3.3.6 rpm
as well. I seem to recall building such a beast before - and as I recall, it
produces, essentially, a full 3.3.6 set of rpms. Installing them bumped my
XFree86 4.0.x setup off, running 3.3.6 instead.

Is this that same beast or is it REALLY a set of compat libs/apps, that will
not takeover from 4.0.2?

Re: [expert] port forwarding for email

2001-01-15 Thread Wayne Stout

Are you talking about local mail or outbound smtp mail?

If you want to forward local mail, it's not too difficult.

Here's my setup:
RH 6.2
Sendmail 8.9.3-20
Webmin 0.82-1

Bring up Webmin, go to the Servers tab, click on Sendmail. Under
Sendmail options, the first three listed options are for forwarding.
Since I only needed to forward local mail, I simply specified the name
of the server that I needed to forward to.

I would think that the other forwarding options would cover smtp mail as
well, but I personally have no experience with them.

Keep in mind that this is what worked for me, YMMV.

perfectly no complaints at all. If there really is no reason for this is there a way
to just supress the error message so I dont see it ?
Thank you, Chronos.

Well, as usual, there is more than one way to skin the cat.

One possiblity is to run Postfix (or sendmail) on the 'other machine'
(thus making it your mail server machine), then simply forward requests
for smtp from outside your internal network to that machine's smtp port
(25).

So, what you need to do is to set up ipchains to forward that port.
(See the many ipchains howtos for details) (assuming you are using
ipchains!)

Or, you could let the mail stop on your firewall, and have your
'other machine' transfer the mail over to itself periodically,
using a cron job or so forth

Or, just let everyone use the firewall to get email from using
pop or whatever.

neither.

Note: be sure that the color dep is 16 bit, the Voodoo acceleration

2001-01-15 Thread Praedor Tempus

True enough, but then 6.1, 6. 2, et al are "old" and not in stores. Linux
has moved on and it is bad business to expect that everyone will stay with
older distros simply to play your games. I would have thought that compiling
monolithic binaries would go a long way towards avoiding distro differences.
It is foolish to believe that everyone will stick with an old version of
glibc, for instance, and thus base a software package off this false premise.
If you want to avoid the problem, make it monolithic and avoid dynamic at
all costs.

Either Mandrake has drifted "too far" from Redhat, which tends to be the
distro most test against, or Loki is not keeping up with linux. It would
rather suck if one had to go to Redhat installs if one wants to play games.

Another nice thing...I DID manage to play the game for a while when I got it
- as root. I cannot recall if that was before or after I went from
XFree86-4.0.1 to 4.0.2 or not. Anyway, Loki has an update for heretic2 which
purports to fix some bugs. Upgrading your heretic2 binary, however, makes it
incompatible with any saved games you might have. You lose all of them, not
that it mattered much. Trying to start a new game either crashes the game or
wrecks X, requiring a restart of the X server.

> > Anyway, trying to run the game totally dicks up my X session.
>
> Do other OpenGL apps run? It sounds like your in software mode...

Yes. Unfortunately, the readme with the games indicate that they will not
work with hardware acceleration if you are using XFree86-4.0.x. I would
expect them to fix this soon as it will certainly become THE X server for all
quite soon. Surely it is just a recompile against the new xfree libs, etc?

[expert] KNode in KDE 2.1 screwy

2001-01-15 Thread Praedor Tempus

I find that EVERY time I try to use knode, it royally screws up KDE. I can
set it up fine, add a news server, etc, and I can download message headers OK
but the moment I try to view a message, KDE is wrecked and only a reboot
seems to get it back. I cannot start ANY KDE apps after this. Konsole, kap,
etc, etc...nothing KDE-related will work. Trying to do so produces error
messages about the DCOP server not finding any useable fonts in
.xsession-errors.

What I see as I start the reboot is a message indicating that a "could not
find default font 'fixed' " and that it couldn't find any usable fonts.

Of course this is bullcrap as all the fonts on my system are usable - it's
just that something about knode wrecks everything, having a problem with the
perfectly fine fonts on my system.

Here is my chkfontpath:
Current directories in font path:
1: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled
2: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
3: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
4: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled
5: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
6: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mdk
7: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont
8: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/pcf_drakfont:unscaled
9: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/msttfonts
10: /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1
11: /usr/share/fonts/ttf/western
12: /usr/share/fonts/ttf/decoratives

ALL of these paths contain valid, working fonts. ALL of them.
I fear messing with knode any more since everything I have tried to get it
configured to, hopefully, avoid this problem fails and I end up rebooting.

What is this default 'fixed' font that knode can't live without? Why is it
that magically, all the other fonts become invisable to KDE after using knode?

[expert] Tape drive Question(s)

2001-01-15 Thread David Boles

While going through some boxes of "old stuff" I came across an Iomega
parallel port Easy 800 tape drive and some old tapes. The tapes conform
to Travan (TR-1) format and QIC-80 format.

Is there any way to use this tape drive, with Linux, long enough to get
some files written with Iomega Windows 3.1 software? My son used this
drive to store some graphics files when he was in high school and I was
just wondering if I could retrieve them.

Where do I go, what do I read, what software do I need? Preferably
something GUI.

John - some wild guesses here:

I've seen vnc have trouble if you are hardcoding your

Do you have execute permission on ~/.vnc/xstartup?
Try using the full path to the window manager in xstartup.
It might be helpful if you included your ~/.vnc/xstartup file.

Re: [expert] to improve the yield from my sendmail

2001-01-15 Thread dmstark

How? Replace it with Postfix. I believe 7.2 COMES with postfix, and if not,
its easy to compile. Almost scary easy.

Really, sendmail contains so much legacy code that it's become a bloated,
insecure horrible horrible service. Postfix is MUCH faster (you should be
able to push a million email a day on that box of yours), and its easy to
configure. If you can configure apache, then you can do postfix.

That's my advice, anyway. If you feel compelled to keep sendmail for some
reason, well, good luck to you.

The "append=2" didn't work. So I uninstalled the kernel 2.4.0 RPMs; and
installed the latest 2.4.0-4 RPMs from Mandrake Update.
Worked fine; boots up properly and everything. The compile is a bit odd - I
get these unresolved errors, referencing PCMCIA, when I do a "make
modules_install".

Since I don't use PCMCIA (it's not a laptop), and have turned off all PCMCIA
options in the config, I ignored it and went on my merry way. :-)

It was a bit disconcerting, tho - not seeing the usual "Installing modules
under /lib/modules ... " statements.

End result - I'm running 2.4 now. Don't notice any difference between this
and my 2.2.17 yet, but

Oracle uses the old glibc libraries, and Redhat installs these old libraries
by default; in Mandrake, you need to install them yourself. Do a search on
google,
there are a few pages worth reading about "Oracle install mandrake"

[expert] ecasound and arts in kde2

Hi,
has anyone been able to use arts (Mandrake 7.2/kde2) and ecasound and
its arts i/o module as input? If I try and use arts as the input to
ecasound, it creates a 44 byte file only (wav header I presume). I need
to use a mixer to attenuate the output from kwintv to stop it distorting
due to overload on input to ecasound using /dev/dsp.

Mandrake 7.0.

> Mandrake 7.2 uses bind-8.2.2P5-12mdk and it's on the main install cd.

The installation of 8.2.2P5-12 would require the installation of all
the bind files.

Are they binary-only drivers? If you have source you need to recompile the
kernel with the source included in the source tree, and include it in the
config, probably with a "Yes" not a "module."

That's a udma 100 setting

Crappy drives outside of specs--sorry but it even happens with IBM despite
their care. Thus the drive advertises to the software that it can run
udma100 and the kernel tunes to that and times out because the tolerances of
the kernel are tighter than the drive. Mostly this is restricted to a few
brands, and works better with the running kernel than the install kernel.

And just because it reads OK on one speed test does not mean the drive is
running reliably. I wish there were better explanations, but we seem to be
more in the area of plumbing than of science here.

Also, most people do not check or develop a REGULAR schedule of cable
rotation (Put in new and throw away old) There's vibration and we are
counting on cheap plastic to maintain tight connections of metal to metal in
the insulation displacement configuration.

Naturally, in those short articles, I am asked to condense the full
explanations greatly, most users don't want to be bothered with that much
detail. Here you will find a much more thorough explanation:

As to why this works with Windows but not with Mandrake--remember windows has
no native ATA/100 drivers--They are by the interface
manufacturers and are far less efficient (read sloppier and m
