[expert] Problems with the 12/10/32a Plexwriter

2001-05-11 Thread Darryl Bleau

Hi everyone. Sorry if this is the wrong list to post to, I did a few
searches through the archives and it seemed like this would be the right
place. If I'm wrong let me know.

I've been fighting with having my 12/10/32a Plextor Plexwriter (IDE)
actually read cdrom's under mandrake 8.0. (Actually, I've had problems with
any 2.4 kernel distro, with the exception of slackware. I can install say
the old redhat and my plexwriter works fine, and as soon as I put in a 2.4
kernel it stops).

But, back to the mandrake situation. I only have the burner in my system,
no other drives. I install using the mandrake cd in that cdrom, and it
installs fine, but when mandrake comes up after being installed I can't use
the cdrom anymore. I've posted this as a question on mandrakeexpert.com but
can't get it working, so this maliing list is my last resort. Here is what
I posted on mandrakeexpert.com:

CD-ROM doesn`t work. I have three HD`s and one CD-ROM on a Asus CUSl2. The
cd-rom is a Plexwriter 12/10/32A, IDE. I booted and installed off this
cdrom. When Mandrake loads, it cannot access the cdrom. In a terminal if I
try to cd to /mnt/cdrom it says there is an I/O error. In the hardware part
of the control center it says I have two cdroms, one on /dev/hdc that is
ATAPI/IDE and one on /dev/scd0 that is SCSI.

And I've received a few replies and tried what was suggested, nothing
seemed to work. In the interest of brievety, here are the latest symptoms:

[root@terapro33-244 ide-scsi]# modprobe ide-scsi ; modprobe sr_mod
[root@terapro33-244 ide-scsi]# cd /mnt/cdrom

bash: cd: /mnt/cdrom: Input/output error

[root@terapro33-244 /root]# cd /proc/ide/ide1/
[root@terapro33-244 hdc]# ls -l
total 0
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 capacity
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 driver
-r 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 identify
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 media
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 model
-rw--- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:07 settings
[root@terapro33-244 hdc]# cd /proc/scsi
[root@terapro33-244 scsi]# ls -l
total 0
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 May 3 23:11 ide-scsi/
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:11 scsi
[root@terapro33-244 scsi]# cd ide-scsi/
[root@terapro33-244 ide-scsi]# ls -l
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 3 23:08 0

ANY help at all on this would be very helpful.. I've been a hardcore
slackware user since 2.x but I'm really liking this mandrake and I've made
burns of every 8.0 beta, hoping that my cdrom would work with the final
release, but to no avail.

Thanks!

Progress has been made. I noticed that things work much better when I
change the color depth on the video card to 16 bit.

Now the main issue is that the console intermittently gets whacked out
when I dynamically change physical resolution in X. This is to the
point where I see hacked up line segments of TV output still moving and
scattered about the screen and I can move the mouse, but absolutely
nothing more. (Can't even Ctrl+Alt+F8 or F10 out.) I have to remotely
log in and fix things from there. Seeing that previous foul ups before
I changed the color depth caused massive corruption leading up to a
kernel panic, I became paranoid and just went straight to rebooting as
opposed to just killing the offending processes. I was wondering if
other people have seen similar things or if I should start wondering if
something is fouled up on my machine.

[expert] Changing user's icon

Does anyone know how to change the user icon shown in the kdm screen (the one
that comes up by default if you boot directly into X)?

Re: [expert] Mandrake 8 vs 7.2 with mouse!

2001-05-11 Thread A. Rick Anderson

Well, the following steps finally did it:
1) downloaded 2.4.4 from: http://www.kernel.org/
2) Did a bunch of makes (suggestions from a variety of folks and sources)
a) make oldconfig (keeps the old values as defaults)
b) make dep
c) make bzImage
d) make modules
3) cp the bzImage to /boot. (this file is way down in
$KERNEL_UNZIP_DIR/arch/i386/boot. It is NOT the file 'vmlinux', which is
an executable that you will find in $KERNEL_UNZIP_DIR!!!)

at this point, the docs and lotsa folks said "run /sbin/lilo". Well, I did
just that it. In fact, I did it several times, and it wasn't doing me any
good. I even tried fixing the links so that they pointed to the new image
and then running lilo. It looked like it was working, but it wasn't.

Then I received a pointer from someone to
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/install/#1st ie, a very polite RTFM :-)
This set of docs pointed me indirectly to the Control Center -> Boot
Config, which allowed me to point lilo to the images I wanted to use
without having to manually figure out and fix /etc/lilo.conf.

It took a couple of reboots and playing around, but the last step was
making sure that the label for the new image was "linux" and that the video
was set to 'normal'. For some reason, it seemed to take two iterations
within the configuration tool to get this to stick. It kept wanting to
leave the video on '788'. I think that the trick to be sure and exit via
the buttons and menu items, not by using the x button in the upper right of
the window.

The BTL.
1) Download and unzip/untar the source from http://www.kernel.org/
2) As a minimum do 'make' steps a-c (see above). Find the bzImage in the
i386 directory and copy it to /boot.
3) Use the control center -> Boot Config to reset lilo and write the stuff
to your boot sector.

exit, reboot, it does some more configuration during reboot,
you are in business and both the track point and a PS/2 mouse work like a
champ.

BTW: Be very, very sure that you have an emergency recovery disk before
you start!!!

[expert] viewer for user-guide.ps or .mif

2001-05-11 Thread Bill Kenworthy

I am trying to read the user-guide.ps that comes with the berkely mpeg
tools. None of the postscript viewers on Mandrake 7.2 will read it (it
is postscript created with framemaker according to the header, a damaged
file according to xpdf, others ask if it is encrypted(doubtful!), but I
think it more likely an incompatible format) - has anyone had any
success? There is also a .mif version but I have no idea what reads

Re: [expert] LILO no longer works

2001-05-11 Thread Jay DeKing

I have had to boot Linux with a floppy ever since I was forced to
reformat my Win98 drive (hda1).

Before the unfortunate incident which precipitated the reformatting, I
had been using grub - very happily. Now, I have gone through
grub-install many times since then, which gives me a Stage1 Read Error
every time. I have also tried lilo (both graphical and command-line
methods) and klilo. Both of them give me screens full of 10 10 10 10 ...
ad infinitum.

Every time I look for an answer, I am always told the proper method for
installing GRUB and/or LILO. While I am thankful for the advice, I have
gone through both procedures, carefully, in letter-perfect fashion many,
many times, with precisely the same results every time.

My fstab, lilo.conf, and menu.lst have not changed since I had to
reformat; they should not need to, since the drives are configured
exactly the same way as they were when GRUB worked. The last time
somebody asked me to post my menu.lst file so they could see if anything
was wrong with it, I never heard another word about it. So, either there
was nothing interesting about it or I was forgotten.

Imagine my pleasure when I saw a new idea (Civileme's - see below)! I
tried it, and ... guess what? A screen full of 10 10 10 10 ... ad
infinitum. Sigh.

So, here is my menu.lst file again:

Re: [expert] Kernel 2.4.4 !

2001-05-11 Thread A. Rick Anderson

Following the directions in the README, I
make config
make dep
make bzImage
According to the README, you're supposed to replace the exisiting kernel
image with the new image. But the current image is simple a link to
vmlinuz in /boot. So I copied the new image to /boot/vmlinux-2.4.4 and
moved the link from linuz-2.3... to the new kernel image.

Now my machine won't boot off of the new kernel. Fortunately, I had my
recovery disk, but I obviously missed a step in there somewhere.

And the computer doesn't hang there. I get this message just behind the
login prompt and it only looks like the computer hangs. You just type in
your login id just like this messages were not there at all. You hit
enter and get a passw prompt. You don't have to punch in ^C because after
the message is printed on stdout the causing program is finished anyway.
Also, if you look into /var/log/messages you'll see the same lines very
early during the bootup.

I have this on all 8.0 installations (several different pcs and a
Thinkpad).

You can boot off the install cdrom as a rescue disk and run it from
there, no need to screw around with the vfat partition.

I had the same problem with 8.0, and reinstalled several times. I ended
up reconverting everything back to ext2.

Are there any plans to include sgi's xfs or ibm's jfs in the future, both
seem to be more stable than reiserfs (especially with flaky disk drives)

Or do you also get the kernel panic message? Sorry for previous post--I

Actually, Benjamin, there should have been no need for ./configure, make,

appropriate sub-dir of /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/[i386, i486, i586, i686, k6, or

Ummm you need to do a minimal install 8.0 -NON REISER- Very tiny / partition

Then the following steps:

1. Get your 7.2 install CD and mount it and install reiserfs-utils from it
(rpm -e the reiserfs-progs from 8.0)

2. make your other partitions ext2 and format them

3. reboot to kernel 2.2.19

4. mkreiserfs on those partitions (/home, /usr, /var )

5. edit your /etc/fstab to add the partitons you have made as follows

/dev/hda7 /spvar reiserfs -notail 1 2
/dev/hda8 /spusr reiserfs -notail 1 2
/dev/hda9 /sphome reiserfs -notail 1 2

(numbers are an example--use your own)

6.  mount /spvar && cp -a /var/* /spvar && umount /spvar
 mount /spusr && cp -a /usr/* /spusr && umount /spusr
 mount /sphome && cp -a /home/* /sphome && umount /sphome

7. Edit the /etc/fstab again and take off the "sp" in the mount points

8. Now do the following

mv /var /oldvar && mkdir /var && mount /var
mv /usr /oldusr && mkdir /usr && mount /usr
mv /home /oldhome && mkdir /home && mount /home

9. Test it to make sure it works. Then

rm -r /oldhome -f && rm -r /oldvar -f && rm -r /oldusr -f

The reason you have difficulty now is that the version of reiserfs supplied
with 8.0 does NOT work with 2.2 kernel, only the older version does.

you can use "defaults" instead of "-notail" and save some space but you will
take a performance hit. Once a reiser partition has been mounted -notail it
must always be mounted that way because the mount option describes a
fundamental difference in the way files are stored.

[expert] REBUILT RPM Mystery -- Solved!

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Todd and friends:

My thanks to Todd Flinders for figuring this out. He was right on
target.

My rebuilt rpm, that is, rebuilt from source rpm, is in
/usr/src/RPM/BUILD!

But it isn't an rpm, but rather requires the usual ./configure, make,
make install installation.

Fabulous!

Thanks again.

[expert] 2.2.19 & mdk8

2001-05-11 Thread Joan Tur

Hi!

I have to install 2.2.19 under mdk 8 in order to use my ethernet card
(no support for it under 2.4.x kernels). I've installed
kernel-2.2.19-10mdk and made a:

mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.19-10mdk.img 2.2.19-10mdk

and pointed lilo.conf to use /boot/vmlinuz-2.2 and
/boot/initrd-2.2.19-10mdk.img (and run lilo). I get the following error
after reboot:

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
[] Loading module /lib/reiserfs.o
Invalid session number or type of track
reiserfs_read_super: can't find a reiserfs filesystem on dev 03:08
reiserfs_read_super: try to find super block in old location
reiserfs_read_super: can't find a reiserfs filesystem on dev 03:08
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:08

Partitions are: 20MB /boot, / and /home (/ and /home are reiserfs; /boot
is ext2)...

Thanks in advance! ;)

[expert] Can't install Mandrake 8.0?? (Uable to mount root fs...)

2001-05-11 Thread Alen Salamun

Hi!

I have installed Mandrake 8.0 on DOZEN machines so far no problem. But on on
this particular one it won't install!
It is a rackmount Intel machine with normal IDE disk! No scsi, radi...

No matter if I boot from CD, Floppy, do text or graphics install, do NET or
CDROM installlNothing helps, always same result!

I get:

Cannot open root device "" 08:05
...
Kernel panic: Unable to mount root fs

It seems like it can't mount the ram drivers it created!?

Bye, Alen

[expert] Forcing 2.2.19 to be installed?

Hallo!

Is there any way to force kernel 2.2.19 to be installed instead of
2.4.3 ??

Thanks! ;)

Re: [expert] Mandrake 8 vs 7.2 with mouse!

2001-05-11 Thread A. Rick Anderson

An approach taken by Turgut Kalfaoglu, posted here earlier, was to download
and recompile the original kernel. I'm downloading the 2.4.4 kernel now,
so we will see how it goes. According to Turgut , the directions made it a
piece of cake and now everything is working just fine.

[expert] REBUILT RPM Bermuda Triangle Mystery -- Where is it?

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I just rebuild a Red Hat source rpm on LM 8.0. What I find curious is
that a) I am not sure it was a success and b) if it was a success, where
is the new rebuilt Mandrake RPM file?

Here is the data:

1) RPM --REBUILD BK2SITE.XXX.SRC.RPM. Does the data show this rebuilding
to be a success? If so, please see section 2 below. I know that rebuilt
rpms should be in /usr/src/... (See data for that below). Well, they are
nowhere in sight. I would appreciate if you could take a look below and
help me interpret the data. Actually, interpret it. As an ordinary user,
I can't tell if it is a success.

I rebuilt a program called bk2site:

[root@sher07 sher]# rpm --rebuild bk2site-1.1.6-1.src.rpm

[expert] How do you upgrade postgres from 7.0.? to 7.1.1

2001-05-11 Thread Laurent Duperval

Hi,

Mandrake 8.0 comes with postgresql 7.0. I want to upgrade it to 7.1.1 using
the MDK tools. How do you do that? Yes, I could always go to rpmfind.net and
download all the rpms and install them. But I'm more interested in doing it
thru the Software Manager or something. For the time being, the only
packages I can see with SM ore the postgres 7.0 files. How do I ask it to
got on the 'net to find me versions of 7.1.x?

Thanks,

L

I had the same problem. I have edited /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XftConfig and there
I have removed all Asian font-entries, now kde works again with antialiasing.

[expert] rc.firewall.... rules

2001-05-11 Thread Alen Salamun

Hi!

I think there should be first flush of all rules in rc.firewall...that is
made by drakgw! If I wish to restart network suppose I get duplicated rules
in iptables and if I only wich to restart firewall rules ofcourse same
happens.

There should be

iptables -F INPUT
iptables -F OUTPUT
iptables -F FORWARD
iptables -F -t nat

in the start (when kernel is 2.4)! Don't you think so?

Well, jre is refering to java (Java Runtime

Ok. I hereby propose that at least one developer at Mandrake be given
a functional keyboard and a PS/2 mouse that works so that we have at
least one person there who realizes that disabling something because
YOUR hardware is broken is not a solution

No real flame intended, but it does sound pretty lame. (The least they could

I get this message 100% of the time (booting up into the console). Ctrl-C

[expert] LM 8.0 "halt" bug -- Fortin's Solution

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friens:

Thanks to the great troubleshooting efforts of Pierre Fortin, we have a
new "halt" file to replace the /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt file IN CASE YOU
HAVE HAD A PROBLEM SHUTTING DOWN YOUR SYSTEM.

If your shutdown works fine, i.e. without any error messages, with all
OK check marks and ending properly with all filesystems unmounted
("System halted"), then skip this. This bug may or may not affect all LM
8.0 users. It was a serious problem for me. So, it may affect your
system, too. My system consists of an AMD K6-2, 400 MHz, 128 megs of RAM
and LM 8.0.

On the other hand, if you have a problem with shutdown, try Fortin's
modified version of "halt."

This new "halt" file also takes into consideration any supermount you
might have in /etc/fstab (usually /mnt/cdrom, /mnt/floppy and /mnt/zip)

The problem seems to have something to do with LM 8.0's /boot partition.
This may involve a kernel bug, according to Fortin.

Before you do anything, rename the halt file that's on your system (just
in case) as follows:

[init.d]#mv halt halt.old

WHERE TO GET THE NEW HALT FILE:

You can get the new "halt" file at:

http://www.pfortin.com/

(bottom of page)

First, cd to /etc/rc.d/init.d/

To save it, hold the SHIFT key while clicking on the "halt" link and
choose Save as. The file name will appear in your browser.

After saving it, open up a console or xterm and copy the file as
follows:

[home/user]#cp halt /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt

Now, you MUST change the permissions on the file as follows:

[init.d]#chmod 755 halt

Or, from your home directory:

[user/home]#chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt

(Either way will work)

NOW REBOOT to allow the new changes to take effect. Ignore any error
messages at this point.

After you reboot to the console (runlevel 3) or directly to your GUI
(KDE, Gnome, etc), insert a zip cartridge into your zip drive, a floppy
into your floppy drive and a CD into your cd drive (yes, all
simultaneously). Now, test the new "halt" script by shutting down your
system with:

#shutdown -h now

The shutdown should be perfect with all green OK and you should be able
to see the new script unmount each partition INDIVIDUALLY:

DEBUG: Unmounting /home OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /zip OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /floppy OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /cdrom OK
DEBUG: Unmounting /boot OK

etc.

The script should end with either just the last line above ("Unmounting
/boot OK") or else with

"System halted"

or with

"Power down."

Now, be sure you remove your floppy (if your floppy is, as usual, the
first drive indicated in your BIOS).

Fortin's "halt" script should also work better with rebooting your
system (Cnt+Alt+Del or "shutdown -r now"). Automatica rebooting on my
system does not always work. The majority of times it does. But
sometimes it doesn't. That is, on occasion, it hangs on "Please stand by
while Linux reboots...

Fortin's "halt" script doesn't fully solve the reboot issue. However,
when you manually power down and then power up and reboot, you should
have a perfect reboot without any error messages (all green check marks,
no "cleanly unmounted, check forced" messages which need to be fixed
(with red check marks). Instead, you should see "/hda1 clean" ("hda1" is
my /boot partition).

The same thing happens after a proper shutdown. When you power up, your
bootup should be perfect with all green check marks and "hda1 clean" (or
whatever your /boot partition is called). That's how you can tell that
the new "halt" script is working properly.

All the best.

[expert] LM 8.0 -- WINBOND/SMSC IO detection error in console

2001-05-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Occasionally when I boot up to the console (runlevel 3), I see the
following strange message on the screen:

sher07 login: Winbond Super-IO detection now testing ports 3F0, 370,
250, 4E, 2E, SMSC Super -IO detection now testing Ports 2F0, 370.

I then have to type CntRL-C to return to my usual logon screen with the
prompt, so I can log INTO KDE with startx.

This doesn't happen all the time but most of the time. I can't see any
clear pattern as to when it happens and when it doesn't except to say
that I have a similar problem with reboot: sometimes Cnt+Alt+Del (or
shutdown -r now) will result in an automatic reboot. But sometimes it
hangs on "Stand by while Linux tries to reboot...". I can't perceive any
pattern here either. And I don't know if they are connected.

I have been told that I should use some sort of hardware diagnostic tool
to troubleshoot this problem. By the way, I have never had this problem
on any earlier version of Linux-Mandrake.

I would really appreciate help from one of the experts on our list.

Thank you in advance.
