[expert] Memory usage Nvidia and Mandrake

2001-09-21 Thread Gabriel Gaston Infante Lopez

Hello Guys, If anybody, please can help me.
I have a dell inspiron 8000 with an nvidia GForce2Go (16Mb) only
running mandrake 8, I installed the drivers from nvidia's web
site. Everything looks fine. The problem I have is that the X
server is taking all the memory and my hard disk is trying to
escape from my computer. I saw, using top, that X is taking up
140% of the memory (I have 120MB). If I remove the glx module
from the memory X will use "only" 80%. I checked AGP, and I am
using nvidia's agp driver.
I will appreciate any help,

thanks very much.

RE: Fwd: Re: [expert] Virus protection...

2001-09-21 Thread Franki

ftp://ftp.antivirus.com/products/freetools/

is where you can get it from,, here are my instructions I posted on how to
do it all..

==

I have just swapped to trend viruscan for linux...

I thought I'd mention all the links and stuff, so that people can search the
archives here if they want to know how it is done.

Here is the url to download it,

ftp://ftp.antivirus.com/products/freetools/

(the address listed in the "openantivirus" readme didn't work for me, but
this one did...
download filescanlinux.tar (when you untar it, it has install instructions
and a pdf file)

If the scanner install gives you a message that it wont' install because you
don't have redhat release 6, (and you do have a modern linux)I got that
message with mandrake 7.2, edit /etc/issue (create it if you don't already
have one, go into /etc and type 'touch issue') and put the words "release 6"
in it somewhere, you can delete it after install. (thats how the install
program works out what version of linux you have) pretty lame method thinks
me, but its a good thing that its lame if you don't have redhat.

I have it working flawlessly on Mandrake and I don't think there would be
much problem getting it working on other distro's.

Here is the link to get the latest engine update, (the version I have now is
"Virus Scanner v3.1")

http://www.antivirus.com/download/engines/

Go to the Interscan viruswall table and look in the linux box.
download that tarball.

open the tarball, and copy the file in it into /etc/iscan, overwrite the
file of the same name that's in there.(it might not be a bad idea to backup
the old one in case there are problems.)

thats your engine updated to their latest version.

If for some reason the web manager pattern update feature doesn't work, (it
didn't for me, think its a isp problem, we have a strange proxy.,)
go here: http://www.antivirus.com/download/pattern.asp
choose the linux tarball and you have the latest pattern file.

Thats it,, This is a very comprhensive scanner for a freebie... much better
then the network associates vscan I was using before,,, (admitadly an old
version).

the web interface is an exceptional feature...

Thats it, I have yet to test this with all the virus's that I have on file
for that purpose, and I will post the results when I do, but I am quietly
confident. (I have since done this, and it passed ALL tests I threw at it...

ahh ... scanning yourself from the same box is *almost* irrelevant! You
need to do it from another box, preferably outside firewalls, ISP's etc
to actually see what is exposed to the world, rather just *open* to
itself. Whist free scans from grc.com and the like are windows biased,
they can at least confirm what your machine looks like to an outside
scanner as a confidence check.

I know about nmap. When you're not on a linux box and you need this
sort of tool (god forbid) , it's nice to know where to find it. Know

That will work if you are using a super-daemon like inetd or xinetd. However,
it won't close the ports that other servers are listening on.

If you have servers running that you only want localhost to have access to,
try using iptables to block them. For instance, let's say you have mysql
running and you don't want it visible on the network. Then do:

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 3306 -s ! 127.0.0.1 -j DROP

This says add (-A) to the INPUT table the rule that if a something arrives
whose protocol (-p) is tcp and whose destination port (--dport) is 3306 and
whose source (-s) IP is not (!) 127.0.0.1, then jump (-j) to the DROP table.
Obviously, the DROP table drops the packet on the floor.

[expert] LM 7.2 and rpmdrake

2001-09-21 Thread D. R. Evans

I don't know how this happened, but suddenly I can no longer install
rpms from my LM 7.2 installation CDs.

When I start rpmdrake I get a message that "RpmDrake was unable to find
any package. Please, check your installation. If you made an NFS
install, check the NFS directories are still correctly mounted".

AFAIK, I am not using NFS at all, and never have.

If I do a File | Preferences, the little graphical "media" box shows
up, but it's empty (it used to display the two CDs). Any attempt to add
the CDs via this dialogue box doesn't seem to do anything at all.

Any help greatly appreciated.

All,
Coming from the BSD world I can say that to "close" a port I would simply edit

[expert] Changing to security level 3 or 4 makes it impossible to change user passwords?!

2001-09-21 Thread Jon Leech

[I first sent this out on the 17th, but it seems to have been lost
to a power glitch at Mandrake - retrying.]

I've just changed some of the security levels on one of my machines
running Mandrake 8.0 - from no security whatsoever while running inside
our corporate VPN, to 'msec 4' now that I'm running behind a Linksys NAT
router to a DSL line. I now find it impossible to change user account
passwords. I did try backing off to 'msec 3', but that didn't help.

passwd claims 'all authentication tokens updated successfully' when
run as root to change a user account's password (e.g. 'passwd
') - but no change occurs in the password file. In addition,
/var/log/auth.log shows a message like

   PAM_pwdb[#]: password for (login/UID) changed by (root/0)

So passwd appears to think it did something correctly - but as best
I can tell, it actually does nothing at all.

There are no problems changing *root*'s password, just user
passwords. In addition, attempts to change user passwords when su'ed to
that user simply fail:

  % passwd
  Changing password for
  (current) UNIX password:
passwd: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.

Is this perhaps something to do with PAM? /etc/pam.d/passwd looks like

  #%PAM-1.0
  auth required/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
  account required/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
  password required/lib/security/pam_cracklib.so retry=3
  password required/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so use_authtok nullok
shadow md5

But pam.d/passwd wasn't changed when I ran 'msec', anyway, so I'm
grabbing wildly for ideas. I tried rebuilding and debugging passwd, but
the problem seems to lie somewhere down inside the PAM libraries, which
are harder to rebuild and understand. I also tried removing the 'shadow'
keyword from the pam.d/passwd conf. file, since I'm not using shadow
passwords at present, but no change in behavior resulted.

Has anyone seen this behavior or know what's up? I searched in the
expert mail archives and on Google, but couldn't turn up a similar
problem report.

Thanks,
Jon

>
> Thanks,

Hmmm, well let's think about this a minute.

All booting is done from /boot.
Kernels that boot must be stored in /boot

kernels are numbered by version and build

like vmlinuz-2.2.19-10mdk
or
vmlinuz-2.4.8-24mdk
or
vmlinuz-2.4.3-20mdk

I have all three in my /boot. One boots RC1 on /dev/hda9, the others boot
8.0 on /dev/hda1.

Now modules

They exist in /lib/modules/2.2.19-10mdk, /lib/modules/2.4.3-20mdk on
/dev/hda1, and /lib/modules/2.4.8-24mdk on /dev/hda9

Now lilo has boot sections for each of these. Moreover there is a boot that
aims at vmlinuz and initrd.imd which are merely links and I can link it to
either one of the kernels booting with /dev/hda1 as / (I would have to
change the root= stanza to make that one boot from /dev/hda9)

OK I also have

initrd.img-2.4.8-24mdk
initrd.img-2.4.3-20mdk
initrd.img-2.2.19-10mdk

I made these or the installer made them. It is rather simple to do, but
required if for example one system uses ext2 and the other uses XFS. These
are the modules loaded without accessing / partition, which may not be
available.

So your problem reduces to moving the stuff you have compiled (as BzImage) to
the right named files, making up your own build numbers to guarantee
uniqueness. And of course to making the rightly named directories for
/lib/modules.

This is _please note this, you folks who upgraded the kernel_ the case. Many
kernels can coexist on your system, with different names, and the bootloader
or the symbolic links, give you access to _all_ of them. The moral is,
_never_ upgrade a kernel, always install it. It will _not_ replace the old
kernel on an install, and it _will_ on an update. Or worse, only part of it
will install and you have the interesting educational experience of booting
one kernel with the modules of another; I guarantee this will be an
eye-opener.

Re: [expert] compiling new kernel, keeping old kernel, how?

2001-09-21 Thread Al Niessner

You can modify these steps however you like, but if you do make sure you
understand the consequences.

1) edit /usr/src/linux/Makefile and change EXTRAVERSION to be what ever
you want like 'EXTRAVERSION = 24mdk-myversion'

2) 'cd /usr/src/linux'

3) 'cp .config my-configuration'

4) 'make mrproper'

5) 'cp my-configuration .config'

6) 'make menuconfig' then exit and save changes or use your favorite
make config.

7) 'make dep bzImage modules'

8) 'cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.9-24mdk-myversion'

9) 'make moudles_install' and they will get copied to
/lib/modules/2.4.9-24mdk-myversion

10) 'cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.4.9-24mdk-myversion'

11) point an entry in /etc/lilo.conf to the new kernel in /boot

12) 'lilo'

13) reboot and have fun.

Note: all the real work done is by setting the EXTRAVERSION in the
Makefile.

Re: [expert] closing ports

2001-09-21 Thread Asheesh Laroia

What ports in particular?

Some ports are controlled by a program called xinetd, a "superserver";
others are controlled by one specific program.

Example: SSH is controlled by the OpenSSH program, but telnet is part of
the xinetd superserver.

Try this command (as root):

netstat --listening --program

It should show you a list of what programs are listening on what port. It
will give you names instead of numbers (i.e., "ssh" instead of "22").
Give it the --numeric option if you want numbers rather than names.

Please reply with the output of that command. Unlike Windows, Linux
actually has reasons to have ports open - any Mandrake machine can be
logged into remotely (and securely) by using the SSH protocol, for
example.

Ask for more of an explanation if you need one.

Re: [expert] compiling new kernel, keeping old kernel, how?

2001-09-21 Thread ddcharles

Hi,

Thanks, but as I said in my original posting, I have no problem with LILO,
or adding OSs to LILO. What I AM having a problem with is figuring out
how to compile/install a kernel so that I can keep all the mods/deps from
my current kernel, AND those from the new kernel, in 2 SEPERATE places (if
it is possible).

Thanks,
David Charles

There is a soldered-in EPROM to manage the I2C Bus, possibly integrated into
a larger chip or package. It is not flashable from the board, but somehow
lm_sensors finds a way to overwrite it with garbage. Once this happens, the
laptop simply stops working, and nothing short of a motherboard replacement
will remedy the situation.

IBM has apparently known of this since mid 2000.

You can also work properly by using the kernel22-2.2.19-10mdk.i586.rpm as
your kernel.   It is safer anyway.  I dread the day when someone forces an
install of lm_utils onto an IBM notebook and checks battery power, cause his
next act will be a factory return for a new motherboard.  At least we, unlike
the others, keep it unloaded by default so you have to track it down to load
and execute, and destroy your notebook.

Then the kernel sources aren't installed.

Install them and start reading up on kernel compilation.

Well.. I assume that it loads the kernel because once I boot up into linux
again, it says 2.4.9 at the boot prompt (I go to command mode)

Well, the problem is I'm obviously not configuring it properly (obvious if
you look at the boot process after kernel upgrade). Last time I tried it..
I get a fs error (I assume file system?) on all the /hda* from linux. Then,
once I finally actually get INTO linux, I have no internet access. I
finally got internet access, but not after having to live with some ins?
error (possibly insmod.. I can't remember off hand now)

So basically I'm not configuring the kernels properly. That would be the
problem :)

[expert] PPC Installation, DrakX and boot loader

2001-09-21 Thread Dirk Hoppe

Hello,

Please excuse me that I post to this list, but there are not many LM PPC
users yet.
I try to install LM 8.0 on PPC G4 433 MHz. I used the graphic installer
DrakX and everything went fine until I reached the last but one point:
building the boot loader. When I try to build it I get the error message:

Installation of bootloader failed. Error: hmount: /dev/hdb10:not a Macintosh
HFS volume (Invalid argument) ybin:An error occured trying to access
/dev/hdb10 as HFS

The Linux volumes are /dev/hdb11 for / /dev/hdb12 for swap and /dev/hdb13.
The MacOS volumes are /dev/hdb9 for MacOS X and /dev/hda9 for MacOS 9.2.1.

So the installer tries to take a non HFS volume to put the boot loader on
and I didn´t find a way to change the volume in the graphic installer. I
don´t want to do an 'install-text' install, because I´m new to Linux and
there isn´t much documentation for the PowerPC machines. I only have some
experience with NetBSD on mac68k, but that´s different.
I hope someone can help me.

Thanks in advance!
Dirk

[expert] Telnet not working after upgrade of Apache and php

2001-09-21 Thread Stephen Kitchener

Hi,

I don't know if this is related but after I upgraded to the latest
apache (3.1.20), telnet no longer works. This is because xinetd isn't
running. I have tried to start the demon but nothing happens, no error,
nothing written in /var/log/messages

It's Very stange, This is stopping users from loggin in, ssh works, but
I am fighting some users and still they insist on using telnet. I know I
should be getting them to use ssh, but.

So the question really is, why isn't xinetd starting and why isn't it
complaining at all.

Can someone help please.

RE: [expert] multiple mailservers on one machine

2001-09-21 Thread Franki

you will have to be careful however depending on the MTA's you are refering
too..

Sendmail, qmail and postfix all have a sendmail binary (for compatability),
and if one overwrites the sendmail of the other.. that can cause big
probs...

This should not be a problem.

You just have to configure the services to listen on the desired
interface / ip-address.

for services that are run from xinet.d you must use the
bind or interface keyword in the config file. man xinetd.conf will tell you
more.

For "standalone" servers you have to check their config files
