On dual boot systems, Windows expects the hardware (BIOS) clock to be in
localtime not GMT (UTC not precicely the same thing anymore). So you have a
choice. Leave hwclock set to local time and live with it on the Linux side or
set the BIOS clock to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) and have the time always
be wrong under windows.

Download the kernel form source is one way.

Or get the updated rpm from the mandrake ftp site or one of its mirrors.

[expert] Mandrake 8.1, all updates, mod_frontpage and frontpage extensions.

2002-01-22 Thread Robin Cook

I have done a clean install of Mandrake 8.1 applied all the security
updates. I have the following apache rpms listed below installed and
have extracted fp40.linux.tar.gz in /usr/local.

After restarting apache httpd these are the last lines in
/var/log/httpd/error_log

[notice] Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.22 (Mandrake Linux/1.1mdk)
Frontpage/4.0.4.3 mod_ssl/2.8.5 OpenSSL/0.9.6b PHP/4.0.6
mod_gzip/1.3.19.1a configured -- resuming normal operations
[notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec)
[notice] Accept mutex: sysvsem (Default: sysvsem)

At this point I try to do an http publish to the server with Frontpage
2000 and I get a message saying that the frontpage extensions are not
installed and therefore does not support publishing via HTTP.

So I decided to run the fpsrvadm.exe in
/usr/local/frontpage/version4.0/bin.

Selected 1 for install
Selected 1 for apache_fp
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf for the apache config file (note had to merge
commonhttpd.conf into httpd.conf as it fpsrvadm.exe doesn't look in
other files.)
blank for muli-hosting
apache for UNIX username
apache for UNIX group
fpadm for the user to add to frontpage group "administrators"
put the password in for fpadm

Creating web http://red-dragon.in.eisd.net:8080
Chowning Content in service root web
Install Complete

I then do a restart on the apache web server.

I then try again to do an http publish to the server with Frontpage 2000
and I still get a message saying that the frontpage extensions are not
installed and therefore does not support publishing via HTTP.

I have also manually put frontpage web pages in the /var/www/html
directory to see if they would work and the frontpage exension items do
not work.

What have I missed that is causing the extensions not to be recognized?

AFAIK, the same way you would update any kernel - what exactly is the
question? (no sarcasm intended)
Are there any special circumstances? I wouldn't just blindly update the
kernel, especially if you already have a copy of 8.1 - why not just use
that? I would imagine that anything capable of running 8.0 could also
handle 8.1. Then again, if there's something specific that you need
support for, you might just recompile your existing kernel?

re-post with more info, k?

Re: [expert] mandrake 8.2

2002-01-22 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

I had no problem to install 8.0 and 8.1 on my celeron too. The video card
i810e gave some trouble as far as multiple sessions were required. It
didn't work at on 8.0 but works on 8.1 (one has to change XF86Config though)
without DRI.

I have tried to install fbdev developed by Antonino Daplas (nice guy!) but
it didn't work out as the mandrake kernel didn't accept the patches very
well. I am now running kernel2.17mdk that comes with a patch for i810fbdev
but I didn't figure out how to enable it. dmesg | grep framebuffer doesn't
show a thing which means that framebuffer is not there.

At least multiple sessions work with the normal i810.o drive. Not in the
conventional way but it works.

startx --:1 vt 08 didn't work but startx -- :1.0 does. Why?

I hope that 8.2 allows me to have framebuffer on my intel 810e.

Ed

Re: [expert] SSH

2002-01-22 Thread Jean-Christophe Berthon

> Having used VNC almost daily for a year I can offer the following.
TightVNC is the least bandwidth intensive. Available at tightvnc.com There
are clients for Windows, Linux, (linux builds on FreeBSD) and Mac. Viewing
Linux on windows is better than the other way around. Since Windows doesn't
multitask everyone winds up with the same desktop, and you tend to crash
windows (what a suprise) fairly easy. However if you are on windows and
viewing linux it rocks. It's useable down to a 56k connection but it feels
a lot like a 486 at 56k. Use a window manager like ice or fvvm for the best
results. KDE and Gnome are tooo graphicaly intesive for remote viewing.
However the apps from kde and gnome work well under ice or fvvm. If you go
regular VNC they even have a client for CE. It works as a viewer but its
not the fastest thing in the world.
>

I'm not using VNC (I'm using a commercial software - Exceed - to access a
remote Linux-box) It's not the same philosophy, but we remarked one thing
(just for information) :
Under KDE we have a bandwith used of 10kbytes emiting from the server. While
under Gnome this rise up to 350kbytes!!! Using other window manager, it
droped a bit for about 7-8kbytes... Maybe you'll have the same experience
via VNC

Lubos,

Thanks very much for your reply!

I am sending this to the list, in case others are interested.

I do hope you get KHotKeys finished to include with kde 3.1.

I will probably wait until KDE 3.1 comes out on a distro that I can
successfully install (because of my lack of Linux prowess -- although I
am taking the Best Linux Training course now, and may get more
adventurous).

Indeed! what's the hurry. I don't know that I'm going to be in any great
hurry simply because 8.1 is the most stable installation I've had to date
since Mandrake 7.2. granted some of that is because since 7.1 I've gotten
much better with Linux and tend to screw things up less, but still, I've
noticed that 8.1 is quite solid and stable in comparison. And I thought 7.2
was very stable. and it was!

I'll likely get a copy of 8.2 when it comes out simply because I've got
every copy of Mandrake since 7.1 and I would hate to break up the family I'm
collecting. Mandrake sits proudly at my fingers reach while my old Redhat
CD's are gathering dust somewhere's...ya know? I can't recall just where I
_did_ put them.

O yeah! there they are... *he lifts the coffee mug to reveal RedHat 6.2

Hi,

Good to see that someone had a good experience with MDK 8.1 on a intel 810.
I for one had lots of issues with my CDROM not being recognised till I
downloaded the source for 2.4.17 and installed that by hand.

I think that devfsd should be optional till it is thoroughly tested. (I do
believe that it reduces the time required to mount and unmount drives, but I
might be wrong in my belief)

That did the trick, thanks a lot:)
There weren't any differences in the pcmcia.config files (both Slack and mdk
only excluded irq 4) so I just excluded irq 3 as well.
Result: modem worked fine but a lost interrupt on the cdrom.
After removing exclude irq 4 they both function well.

Some boards with the i810 chipset have a few problems, i think this
includes a series of dell laptops also. The problems are with the
onboard graphics, some machines cant use the fbdev based install, and
some hang when changing modes in X, i.e when testing resolution
settings. There is now a modified install routine specifically for this
chipset i believe.

I must say that is a very lucky install. Some people have had no end of
trouble with mdk 8.1 (and possibly 8.0, i forget) on the i810 boards.
When mdk 8.2/9 comes out, you should try the new installer and see if it
doesnt cause any unforseen problems with that board. For more info on
this i would recomend you talk to some of the guys on the cooker list.

If all you need to do is protect passwords etc. from being "in the clear" try scp or
sftp, they both are installed with a standard install and are invoked in a simular

Re: [expert] SSH

2002-01-22 Thread James Sparenberg

Having used VNC almost daily for a year I can offer the following. TightVNC is the
least bandwidth intensive. Available at tightvnc.com There are clients for Windows,
Linux, (linux builds on FreeBSD) and Mac. Viewing Linux on windows is better than the
other way around. Since Windows doesn't multitask everyone winds up with the same
desktop, and you tend to crash windows (what a suprise) fairly easy. However if you
are on windows and viewing linux it rocks. It's useable down to a 56k connection but
it feels a lot like a 486 at 56k. Use a window manager like ice or fvvm for the best
results. KDE and Gnome are tooo graphicaly intesive for remote viewing. However
the apps from kde and gnome work well under ice or fvvm. If you go regular VNC they
even have a client for CE. It works as a viewer but its not the fastest thing in the
world.

[expert] Strange behavior of a tulip clone NIC

2002-01-22 Thread Molotov

Hello

I would like to know if anybody has an idea on this:
I'm using a Netgear FA310TX NIC card (PCI), bought a few months ago. I
think the chip is from LiteOn, a Tulip clone.
I tried to make it work on a Debian system, with no success (tried the
ng-tulip.o module, v0.89k, and the latest tulip.o). When I switched to
Mandrake8.1, I had the same problem with tulip.o 0.9.14: insmod OK,
ifconfig OK, able to ping my IP from myself, but unable to reach any
computer on my lan, including the gateway.
It is now working, and the only thing I remember having done is...
sndconfig for my old AWE32 ISA.
I have no idea on how the sound card thing could have an impact on the
NIC card, but at this time I don't see another direction. Can somebody
shed some light on this ?
TIA
Regards

François

It might help to have a look at the "include port" lines as well. If
those lines exclude the ioports normally reserved for serial ports 1-4
then we may have an explanation. The only thing that occurs to me in
regard to 3rd party kernels is that there may be other floppy images on
CDs 2 and 3. Good luck with the install

Well actually Slack was still installed. The only exclude mentioned in
config.opts is irq 4 for the first built in serial port..

I copied the the relevant config files to a floppy and started re-installing
mdk7.2. Interesting to see if and which diffs there are. It'l take a while
with the p133 though:)

After that's worked out I'l be giving 8.1 a try. On installing 8.1 with
'expert' option the first demand is about optional 3rd party kernels on
specific floppys.
I'm not quite in the clear as to exactly which floppies are meant and how to
acquire them.

[expert] how to control SCSI disks spin down ?

2002-01-22 Thread Laurent CREPET

Hi, All,

hdparm is a great tool to control my IDE HD. I'm able
to set the spin down timeout, so the disk automatically
standby after 30 minutes.

But I have also 3 SCSI disks, one running at 1 and
not permanently used. Is there any other tool or kernel
patch available to control the spin down timeout (and
other options) of the SCSI disks ?

Most of hdparm functions are dedicated to IDE drives.

[expert] MDK8.1: make module err: undeclared variable

2002-01-22 Thread Michael Patschull

Hello out there!

probably the problem will be located in front of the screen
but I can't see what I have no plan what to do anymore:

I installed Mandrake 8.1 (kernel 2.4.8-26) and tried to build
a new kernel. Make bzImage was comiled OK, but when making
modules make exited with error: `boot_cpu_data_R65dda927'
undeclared (first use in this function) in function
`get_pgd_fast', `free_pgd_fast', `pte_alloc_one_fast',`vmalloc'
and `pte_free_fast'.

When I included the module which had this error in the kernel
(e.g. ISDN) I got the same error on the next module to compile.
I tried on a different machine...and got the same error!
Next I downloaded the mandrake-updates and tried kernel
2.4.8-34 ...and I still had the same resault !!!

I attached the output of make modules (makemod.out) and my
kernel configuration (newkernel.sav).
My system is a Pentium 233MMX with HX-chipset, 256MB RAM and
two disks at Promise ATA-100 Controller running as a software
RAID-1.

It would be great if someone new how to solve this problem
cause I reached a dead end. I had Mandrake running for years
now and it was always fine, but 8.1 seems not to like my
machine (can't go back to 8.0 cause I got install errors due
to the Promise-Controller (hardisks not found).

Thanks for your time and help!

Regards,
Michael

Assuming you have Mandrake installed, we need to get the resource
conflict handled. In /etc/pcmcia/config.opts you should see "exclude
irq 4", "exclude irq 3", "exclude port 0x2f8-0x2ff", and "exclude port
0x3f8-0x3ff". That should prevent the pcmcia card from getting
resources the serial ports need.

Well actually I'm not having any problems with the pcmcia slots. They work
fine with Mandrake, even the cdrom-card and the xircom-network card
simultaniously (which gave win98 quircks).
The gsm I use now (alas, the one with the pcmcia got stolen) has a dierct
connection to the serial port with an internal hardmodem in the phone, making
it defacto an external modem. Using the 'Hayes' standard protocoll works fine
under with Slackware but doesn't give the response it should with Mandrake.
It probably is a resource conflict, but I can't find the difference in the
use of them tween Mdk and Slack at a first check. That's why I'm asking, it's
fairly time consuming re-installing again and again so I want to check as
much as possible beforehand.

In regards to Mdk8.1 install, I got a working install using the 'vgalo
expert' option but the result was s-l-o-w due to the 'overweight' kernel.
Using the second disk for an alternative kernel doesn't work straight out due
to the pcmcia cdrom needing a boot-floppy.
There are various ways to get around this methinks but as long as I don't get
the modem going it's not worth trying. It's the essential tool in my case
when I'm 'on the road' (actually rivers and canals) to keep in touch with my
home-network.
