[expert] KDEPIM-2.2.2 w/o libpng3?

2002-02-11 Thread Michael Leone

Hi. I was wondering if anyone had a copy of kdepim-2.2.2-1 built w/o
libpng3? I have KDE 2.2.2, from Texstar, but he doesn't provide kdepim.
And the one in Cooker wants libpng3, which I can't seem to install,
since it seems to conflict with many other things.

No USB in 8.1? I have my Visor Prism working fine under 8.1, syncing
with Evolution 1.0.2. The actual USB device does not appear unless the

Re: [expert] Motherboards - again

2002-02-11 Thread Norman

Hi,
I picked up your input to the motherboards thread and wondered
how you got everything to work using your K7S5A board.
I haven't got the plug and lead for the onboard video and bought
an nvidia Geforce2 mx 200 card. this works but above 800x600
the display is bigger than the screen area. which is not what I wanted.
tThe NIC is seen but I cannot get it configured and bought a PCI card.
I am activelly trying to get this to work properly at present with a thread on this
newsgroup and an email to Mandrake support.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [expert] how to make insmod permanent

2002-02-11 Thread Praedor Tempus

You are wanting to use a scsci driver, yes? Perhaps someone else could get
in and address/confirm this?..I believe that a scsi parameter must be passed
to the kernel via the "append=" entry (in lilo.conf) besides adding an alias
to modules.conf. I would assume that since simply adding the alias to the
modules.conf doesn't do it, that passing a scsi-related append statement is
called for. I must do this to get my CDRW to work (IDE).

Re: [expert] Totally lost here

2002-02-11 Thread Praedor Tempus

Bah! Sound problems continue. I finally got alsa to actually work with my
laptop's Solo1 card but there are still artsd/KDE problems with sound.
After the initial fix and bootup, sound worked fine. On all subsequent
bootups sound fails upon loading KDE with a bunch of messages:

"MCOP authority file is wrong size (just starting?)"

"Soundserver warning message:
Can't register Arts::Midimanager" (repeated 2 times)

and

"Soundserver warning message:
_useRemote without prior_copyRemote() - this might fail sometimes" (repeated
11 times)

The end result is no sound in KDE until I open up kcontrol and restart artsd.
>From there, sound works until the next reboot. I once deleted all my
"temporary" mcop-/ksocket- entries in /tmp and deleted all the .DCOP* and
related entries in my home directory and rebooted. Sound worked fine then
but on the next reboot, same old errors and the need to manually restart
artsd.

Anyone have a clue? I'd like to dispense with this problem once and for all
and stop manually restarting artsd every time I login.

[expert] Can't play audio CDs - Mdk8.1

2002-02-11 Thread D. D. Brierton

My sound card seems to be configured correctly - I can play MP3s in
Nautilus and XMMS, and both GNOME and Sawfish sound events are working
correctly. However, if I put an audio CD in the CD drive and attempt to
play it either with Grip or with the CD Player applet then I hear no
sound, even though the CD is spinning and the track time counter is
turning in both apps. I have checked that the CD volume isn't at zero or
muted in the Audio Mixer.

I had been having enormous problems with devfs in Mandrake 8.1, and I
have just disabled it. Audio CD playback wasn't working before or after
disabling devfs however. I suspect that it didn't work before because
devfs is pants, and isn't working now because some crucial symbolic link
or device file is missing from /dev. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm using a simple analog cable connection between my CD-ROM drive and
my soundcard. (Playing audio CDs worked on this machine with Mdk7.x.)

I can send anyone detailed listings of /dev but at the moment I'm not
sure what to look for.

One final thing: having disabled devfs everything else is working fine,
and so I think that this must be one of those "make this symbolic link
to that" type issues, or a "check the permissions on this" one. I did
read over everything I could find at MandrakeUser, MandrakeForum and
MandrakeExpert, but nothing helped.

TIA, Darren

rtl8139 can be confusing. The old driver was named as such and there is
still much out there referencing same. The driver to use is actualy 8139too
as Lee suggested as it's the current incarnation, and it works, unlike it's
predicessor which didn't work all that well.

Oh, just to make something clear, I've not even tried Battlenet with Diablo 2:
LOD...I've only used it on a LAN, with 2 Windoze boxes. Hope I didn't mislead
ya there.

I've not gotten Starcraft to work with Battlenet (although I read that its
supposed to be possible) or across my LAN. I think this is because Starcraft
uses IPX, and Diablo 2 uses Tcp/ip. Its my understanding that getting net-
working going with Starcraft is gonna be worked on as well (by Transgaming).

BTW, if you don't mind, what version/release/chapter of Baldurs Gate did you
get to work?

Thanks much! ;-)

Have you looked in your home directory (skippi). Do an ls -al | less
and look for directories named Mail or mail -- then check them out. I
have experimented with mail (fetchmail, postfix, Elm, Pine, etc.) and I
have stuff in each of these directories, but can't tell you which
programs put them there (Mandrake 7.2). I also have a symbolic link
from /var/mail to /var/spool/mail, with other stuff in there.

Since you are running fetchmail as skippi, my guess is you'd find your
mail somewhere under your home directory.

AFAIK, you don't need both of these -- they both perform basically the
same functions. This could be part of the problem. On the other hand,
postfix actually has some commands (links) named sendmail so that
programs that send email by calling sendmail will work under postfix,
but I don't believe you should see both of these starting.

Which do you intend to run, postfix or sendmail? (I keep hearing that
postfix is easier to configure -- since I don't have either running
successfully, I can't confirm this.)

duron 900 or more on a KT133A motherboard..

quite zippy and really very good value..

although the Celerons are now gettin pretty good to.
All new Celerons over 1.2 gig now have double sized L2 cache...
which makes them very close to PIII's in performance. in fact the only
difference between a PIII and a celeron at that sort of speed is the buss
speed. (133 for PIII 100 for celeron) so they are very close..

Celerons used to be crap compared to Durons, but they are a good deal too
now.

Subject: [expert] Motherboards - again

The recent discussions of motherboards has raised a question with me.
There is always lots of chat about the mid to upper end mobos, but what
about the lower end?

If I were to put together a budget box, that could still run Linux, and
be useable, what mobos would you experts recommend?
This is really just a curiosity question. Not everyone can afford to
build a box based on the Soyo Dragon+, they may want something resulting
in a box half that price.

So drag out your calculators, and lets see what can be built on budget
hardware (must be current stuff. No 486 boxes).

Thanks!
