I don't think you will be able to set the ram parameter for v-ram in
your config file. It is commented out because it is for use when the
video card has dedicated ram on the card itself. If you have done all
you can do, to share 64MB in the bios, then you may be looking at a
hardware problem. Be as observant as possible in looking for extra video
setting in the bios. It looks like your bios is telling you one thing
about video ram allocation, and your OS is telling you something
different all together. Have you looked for a newer bios version that
you can flash. Check out mobo/bios home page. Maybe some extra info
there.

Good luck,

[expert] perm.local being ignored by msec?

2002-06-13 Thread David Guntner

Ok, I've read the information at

http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/msec.php

and saw the information regarding /etc/security/msec/perm.local. I've
created one, and put:

/home/* current 755

in it. Then I ran msec (I'm currently at level 3, BTW). When I look in my
syslog, it shows that it's reading parameters from perm.3, but no mention
of perm.local - also, /home/* directories are still set as mode 711. What
am I missing here to get msec to actually follow the instructions in
perm.local?

[expert] Triple boot system mounting problems

2002-06-13 Thread Mohammed Dakna

Hello,
 1) I have setup a triple boot system with WinMe(fat32),
Mandrake7.2(reiserfs)
and Mandrake8.2(reiserfs,ext2). I am using lilo to switch between the
  systems at boot.

Evrything is working fine. I only have the fololwing problem. I have
given within Mandarke8.2 partion mount points to the 7.2 partition
and WinMe all is mounted fine at boot. However within Mandarke7.2 I
only can mount the WinMe (fat32)partition and one Mandrake8.2
partition (ext2). Trying to mount the others (reiserfs) as:

  mount -t reiserfs /dev/hdb6 /82usr

  fails with the message:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb6,
or too many mounted file systems

Could any one tell me if there is a compatibilty problem between
the reifer FS in both mandrakes (7.2 and 8.2) and if there is a
  way to work arround this.

2) I am using the Ltools to reach from within WinMe the ext2 partition
since the Ltools were not able to read or write to reiser partions
is there another tool for that purpose on the web ?

Thanks

Dave, what is the "current" entry for in your perm.local? Do you want
every subdirectory of "/home" to have 755 perms? Not sure about that
wild card but you might try:

/home/* some_owner.some_group 755

or give path for all directories:

/home/directory1/ some_owner.some_group 755
/home/directory2/ some_owner.some_group 755
/home/directory3/ some_owner.some_group 755
etc, etc,

Example from my perm.local:

/home/cdburn/ root.cwoods 777
/home/exports/root.cwoods 777

Hey! It works.

Cheers,
drjung

I'm not positive, but I believe in order to change the permissions on a home
directory you have to change the default umask. Try adding the following to
the /etc/security/msec/level.local file:

 from mseclib import *
 set_user_umask(022)

Are you going to be able to do that? I thought kde3 required a later

Do any of you have suggestions for Linux software to be used

Hi,

#modprobe reiserfs and then mount ..
this does not work either. I guess it is due to the diffrent versio

2.4.x (using disk format 3.6) but i do not know any work around it.

Would ANY research be complete without photographic evidence? Surely no one

I've also found a local beach, where they have forgone the string all

I have this card. What does /etc/modules.conf say. Here is the line that
got mine working: alias sound-slot-0 opl3sa2
Where it says opl3sa2 it used to be something else, so I just changed
it. Then I ran modprobe opl3sa2. HTH.

RE: [expert] Triple boot system mounting problems

2002-06-13 Thread Tibbetts, Ric

The Linux 2.2.x series kernel does not support Reiserfs.
You would have to either patch the kernel, or more simply, update it with a
more current version.

Subject: [expert] Triple boot system mounting problems

Hello,
 1) I have setup a triple boot system with WinMe(fat32),
Mandrake7.2(reiserfs)
and Mandrake8.2(reiserfs,ext2).

Thanks

[expert] Lockups

2002-06-13 Thread Rob Gillen

Does anyone have a clue about why performing a stat() on a file would
cause it to lock up? I was getting some strange behavior from my system
in that my KDE Konsole would lock up sometimes when performing certain
operations such as find, ps, ls, stat, etc. -- basically anything that
touched certain files. So, I tried using the command 'strace ps -ef' to
find out what was hanging up the command, and discovered that the trace
locked up on a stat64() call. It was attempting to stat /dev/tty1 which
is a soft link to /dev/vc/1. If I tried to stat or even list any of the
tty* files, I got the same result. Note that this problem persists not
only in Konsole, but in any terminal, including the Linux virtual
consoles. It's a really strange problem, so any ideas to figure it out
would be great.

Nop. I'm working on that.
I have it working right now..(or something like that... ) with glibc 2.1
Shouldn't be any problem, if the c++ compiler works fine... it could compile
kde 3.0.1.
Let me tell you the story

I was looking for packages of kde3 that work with glibc 2.1 but the only
thing I found was some updates packages from Suse (for suse version 7.0 that
use glibc 2.1) that I install by hand in our cluster.

At this point I must say that it surprise me. Suse have kde v3.0.1 packages
for all the previous versions... that was very interesting. I mean... you
could be at the edge even if you have an old system.

I take this packages and open them with rpm2cpio and then use cpio to extract
the files so I don't mess the rpm database. and configure the rest by
hand.
A this point the cluster is a mess... some stuff build by hand, other
installed with rpm.
But right now I compile kdelibs and kdebase from the mdk packages.
twiking the specs and modifiying and deleting some buildrequires.
It's not very clean but here in Argentina "lo atamos con alambre" .

Is the DOS based program compiled or interpreted? If compiled, do you have
access to the source? That would make conversion to another Language under
Linuix easier.

But, there is another way. Run DOS under Linux (See FreeDOS on google) and
see if your DOS apps run in that environment.

[expert] pcmcia yenta_socket numbnuts

2002-06-13 Thread Praedor Tempus

Someone previously mentioned problems with wlan cards using the yenta_socket
driver. I have an orinoco gold in a PCI to PCMCIA adaptor in my desktop. I
am using the orinoco_cs driver and with it goes yenta. I asked how one
changes this so that i82365 is used instead of yenta and was told to edit the
/etc/sysconfig/pcmcia file and change the PCIC to i82365. I did this but
STILL yenta_socket is loaded. I have also done some looking elsewhere
(modules.conf and other likely files) but nowhere do I find any mention of
yenta_socket so I can pinpoint who the bastard file is that keeps loading it.

I changed the /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia entry but yenta STILL loads. How does
one get i82365 to load instead?!? I am having MAJOR difficulties getting a
"simple" adhoc connection going between my laptop and desktop. I have tried
everthing and anything, including naked dancing in the rain at night but
nothing NOTHING NOTHING will get them to talk. I am now down to hoping that
the messages in my /var/log/messages file about dev_watchdog (or whatever):
tx timeouts and my orinoco are behind the impossibility of getting my two
linux boxes talking AND I am blaming these tx timeouts on yenta_socket. I
want to try i82365 because it is my last, best hope of getting a %$@@(*!!
wireless connection going between my two systems.

I must say that this sort of ulcer-causing difficulty in setup is one of the
reasons that linux is WAY not ready for everyday people to use. I am not
everyday people but this level of impossibility is bad, bad, bad.

Help! Pleze!

Well..hm.. now you got me wondering!

sheesh... would just a "modprobe eth0" give me that info?

Or... is there another command to do it? I'm trying to learn CLI stuff
more & more so I can rely less on the GUI in case I ever get stuck... I
know I can use the Control centre...but thats not much of a learning
experience!

If I had to try to remember *i'm in windows ATM* I'd say it grabs the
3c90x driver.

I'll take a look and get back to you...offlist or on. your choice luv :)

[expert] which link to use?

I'm using the conexant driver fot their HSF modem in my Evo n115 compaq

I figure I need to link somehow /dev/modem to point to /dev/ttySHSF0. I
know of symlink-ing things, but I'm a little hesitant to try trial error.
which commands/options should I try to get this happening? which FM should

On or Off your choice. Might be better on, Someone might be able to

lsmod | more

you can read all the modules you have listed and see which one is/isn't
