That's the point...I get no messages,because MDK does stops installation

[expert] Modem speeds (slow kbps on dial in server)

2002-11-18 Thread David Stevenson
Hi All,

I have created a dial up account to my home system (MDK 8.2). I dial up
using my laptop to get/check email etc. Although reading the howtos and the
connection being very stable using AutoPPP, the laptop (Win2K) never reports
more than 28kbps, however, when I dial to my ISP directly the laptop gets
56kbps. So I am wondering if I am missing something on my MDK dial-in
server. All settings for the modem port speed are 115200 and the mgetty
speed for comm is also at 115200. I would like to get 56kbps on this dial up
link, so if anyone has got any experiance and could shed any light on this
slow connection I would be grateful.

David.

[expert] Firewalled packets are being filtered out

2002-11-18 Thread Christian Jul Jensen
Hi List

I've configured a webserver, which runs perfectly on it's own net. The
problem is that it's behind a firewall and everything that comes through
that firewall are being ignored by the server.

Must be some kind of spoof-protection. Because the packets get trapped by
rp_filter.

So I've disabled rp_filter, I've set all iptables rules to ACCEPT, and
I've tried lowering the security level with msec. Nothing changed. I've
used tcpdump to see what's going on, and I can see that packets coming
from a machine on the internal net, gets answers. But packets arriving
through the firewall arrives at the interface, but no answer is sent. So I
know for sure that the problem is at this machine.

I'm totally stuck, any help or hint would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [expert] Mailboxes size on Postfix

2002-11-18 Thread Tom
Jorge,
Find the "main.cf" file and add the following line to it:

message_size_limit =

and save it out. Then "reload" postfix to enable the new limit.

example:
   message_size_limit = 1000 for a 10 Meg limit

Adios!

Re: [expert] Mailboxes size on Postfix

2002-11-18 Thread Tom
Hello Jorge,

 I found additional info from the Postfix folks:

message_size_limit =(i.e. message_size_limit = 1000 for 10 Meg)

   is for message size limits.

mailbox_size_limit =(i.e. mailbox_size_limit = 10 for 1Gig)

   is for mailbox size limits.

I do know if webmin will allow you to change these, so you may have to hand
edit the "main.cf" file and add them. Don't forget to refresh Postfix after
altering the configuration.

Credit card charges are made in Euros even though the price quoted is in US $.

That means the cost varies a bit with the exchange rate.

My experience is that the difference is small (~1%).

Of course, but it does explain why amounts charged vary slightly from amounts
posted on the web site. Obviously this bothers some people.

I don't know an easy fix other than to route US payments through a US bank
for prices quoted in US dollars.

The alternative is to quote the exact Euros and put the approximate US price
in parentheses.

Re: [expert] LM 9.0 - Install Fails - SCSI Disks

2002-11-18 Thread Chris
Hi Albert,

I had a similar problem - the installation for MDK9 completely hangs in the
beginning when the AHA2940 is even just inserted - with no disk/CDROM
attached. At first I had a SCSI-CDROM, later changed to an IDE CDROM. I also
moved the controller to other PCI slots. Not until I completely removed the
2940 the installation went on and completed. I was recomended to use some
other boot img from the CD, but that one failed too.

Sorry, no solution - just confirmed that the 2940 seems to break the 9.0
installer.

[expert] Observations: (1) Strange behavior of top, (2) Slow system due to kmail with no indication on top

2002-11-18 Thread Randy Kramer
Sometimes I think it may be useful to someone to just post some
observations. I had occasion to reboot Mandrake 9.0 three times
lately:

(Incidental observation: two occasions were intentional -- wanted to see
if a reboot would restore my performance -- kmail seems to slow down
the system more and more the longer it runs -- don't see anything
suspicious on top (i.e., no excessive CPU usage, no excessive memory
usage), but if I shut down kmail, the whole system is more responsive,
system is still OK when I restart kmail, but over a few days, the
system just gets slower and slower. Third reboot was due to a power
failure longer than my UPS could ride out)

Here is the main observation -- after two of those boots, top performed
strangely -- once I started top, the first update of top showed low CPU
state usage (like 0.3% user, 0.7% system). The next update of top
(which I assume now counted top) showed state usage totalling 100% (or
almost) between user and system, and similarly on each subsequent
update. (I hadn't noticed that behavior with top before the first
reboot, but sometimes I'm not ready to trust my memory of behaviors
that I can't reconfirm.) Now, after the third reboot, behavior is back
to what I expect -- low state usage except when I do something that
makes it spike.

Wierd! (Am I running Windows by mistake??)

I'm not really / actively looking for a fix (at least for the top
behavior) -- if somebody knows why this occurs and has a simple fix,
I'd probably try it. I assume the kmail performance problem is
something that will be fixed in future versions of kde (whatever the
problem is).

I remember coming across a script that created a new initrd file, but now I

recompiled kernel because I need to load scsi drivers.

I had a similiar prob recently where a tiny cgi-script would take 100% CPU

with the bios APM off, it took about 3% for less then 2 seconds..

big difference..

  I've had exactly the same problem.
(just for the record, so the problemcount can increment)
Also, when I finally got it to work (by installing w/o the

card hangs the kernel without emitting any recoveable logmessages
upon first use of the card. Pretty annoying. I haven't been able to try
other distributions, so I don't know if it is mdk-specific.

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how cron/at work/cooperate...

How, for example, does cron determine that the scripts in
/etc/cron.daily need to be executed? Does it just do that at midnight?
Or does it know when 24 hours have passed since the last execution?

Also, I believe that, if the system is down when the execution should
take place, at takes over... When does the execution of the
/etc/cron.daily scripts take place in that case?

[expert] wireless problems

2002-11-18 Thread Vincent Danen
I know many people were having troubles with the wireless problems that
were caused by the initscripts update. I'd like to ask a few of you to
test a package out for me, to see if it corrects your problem. The
basic symptoms seem to be a dynamic IP; for myself, I use static IPs
and did not experience the problem, and others with similar setups did

An acceptable solution.

Otherwise, the pricing on the website is . . . deceptive.

Cronjobs are specified by /etc/crontab. On mandrakesystems (and others as
well) crontab is initially configured to run the scripts in fx. cron.daily
once every day.

The format of the file is:

minute hour day_of_month month weekday user action

so

22 4 * * 0 root run-parts /etc/cron.weekly

runs "run-parts /etc/cron.weekly" as root every monday (0) at 4:22 (am)

"at" simply runs a job at a specified time. Could be a script that checks
if cronjobs has been run. But usually if you have a system that is not up
all the time anacron takes care of the cronjobs

Re: [expert] initrd script

2002-11-18 Thread Thierry TERRIER
Hi,
You can use the mkinitrd script with the following syntax:
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-"version".img "version"
where "version" is kernel version like 2.2.19
You must have compiled and installed yours modules before
(/lib/module/"version")
best regards
Thierry

I remember coming across a script that created a new initrd file, but now I
don't know what it was. The documentation that describes creating an initrd
file describes how to write the script, but I remember that there is a
premade script somewhere. My machine needs an initrd file to run a
recompiled kernel because I need to load scsi drivers.

[expert] Re: Fetchmail 6.1.0-0.1mdk

2002-11-18 Thread Dean S. Messing

I currently have Fetchmail 6.1.0-0.1mdk running with no problems
although I also ran into the --configdump problem when I installed
it.

I don't remember the sequence of events that led to the problem but
I do remember that it boiled down to having a .fetchmailrc file
in the wrong place. It seems (but I may be mis-remembering) that
somehow I had a /.fetchmailrc which the fetchmail configuration GUI (or
fetchmail, itself) didn't like.

Deleting that file and then running the GUI to re-configure, solved
the problem. The key was to have /etc/fetchamilrc and no other config
files anywhere else.

In your case here is what I would suggest (as root) if you
want to run version 6.1.0:

At the Commandline:

  Dean S. Messing
  Display Algorithms & Visual Optimization Lab
  Information Systems Technologies Dept.
  Sharp Laboratories of America

0.  Do `service fetchmail stop'

1. Remove all vestiges of fetchmail by hand (i.e. rpm -e fetchmail),
being careful to first save your working /etc/fetchmailrc
some place safe.

2. Run `/etc/daily/slocate.cron' and wait until it is finished
(On your machine it may be in /etc/weekly.)

3. Do `locate -i fetchmail' and remove anything that comes up (other
than the saved config file) by hand.

4. Install the new fetchmail rpms (rpm -Uvh ...) or use `urpmi' or MCC
as you please.

5. Check to see if there is a /.fetchmailrc. If so remove it. (I
don't think you will find one but I may be wrong here.)

6. Move your saved (and working) fetchmailrc file
to `/etc/fetchmailrc'.

7. Finally, re-enable daemon startup at boot time and do
`service fetchmail start'.

 :: maybe this has been fixed in the latest version of Fetchmail,
 :: but i suspect that i may be missing a step needed when i update.
 ::
 :: yesterday, i checked the Update list in MCC
 :: & found 3 packages listed for Fetchmail 6.1.0-0.1mdk ,
 :: which i installed, replacing Fetchmail 5.9.12-1mdk .
 :: i left  ~/.fetchmailrc  unaltered.
 ::
 :: today, i found that no mail had been downloaded from my 2 ISP servers,
 :: but checking them directly ( ssh to one, KMail for the other),
 :: discovered that there were many messages waiting to be retrieved.
 ::
 :: i tried to run Fetchmailconf (6.1.0),
 :: but it failed to start with a reference to --configdump (IIRC).
 ::
 :: after i removed the 3 6.1.0 packages with MCC
 :: & re-installed the  3  5.9.10 packages from CD & rebooted,
 :: all is well again, incl a successful "test" with Fetchmailconf.
 ::
 :: was there something else i needed to do or did 6.1.0 have a bug?
 :: IIRC 6.1.2 appeared on Cooker today, but 6.1.0 is still in the Update list.

Re: [expert] Making device node

2002-11-18 Thread Dean S. Messing

If you are running "devfs" then you don't need to make the node by hand.
When the st.o driver is installed the nodes are created dynamically.

Try running `modprobe st' and then look in /dev to see if the device
nodes have been created. You should see something long the lines of:

  lr-xr-xr-x1 root root   31 Nov 18 11:26 st0 ->
scsi/host1/bus0/target1/lun0/mt
  lr-xr-xr-x1 root root   32 Nov 18 11:26 st0a ->
scsi/host1/bus0/target1/lun0/mta
  lr-xr-xr-x1 root root   32 Nov 18 11:26 st0l ->
scsi/host1/bus0/target1/lun0/mtl
  lr-xr-xr-x1 root root   32 Nov 18 11:26 st0m ->
scsi/host1/bus0/target1/lun0/mtm
  lr-xr-xr-x1 root root4 Nov 15 18:45

in /dev.

I presume you have also installed
the `mt-st-0.7-1mdk' for controlling your tape drive?

[expert] Dial-in ppp and Bastille

2002-11-18 Thread Tommy Wareing
I've got a dial-in ppp server running on my home server, which also
runs Bastille firewall.

Unfortunately, my default dial-out connection (which its unlikely to
use, as I've got broadband) is ppp0, and so is the incoming
connection. Obviously, with only one modem, only on of these can be
active as once, so this conflict doesn't cause any problem in
practice, until it comes to setting up the Bastille configuration.

I'd like to configure it so that the dial-in connection is treated as
an internal connection, but other ppp connections (ie. outgoing
connections) are treated as untrusted external interfaces.

So how do I tell the pppd daemon to give a specific name to one of the
connections (preferably the incoming one), which I can then pass on to
Bastille?

Hi Norman, my advice, from a not so expert linux user
is, DO NOT use telnet, it's very insecure for sending
info. Just work with ssh, it's a lot better. I've been
working on ssh from my work to my home, and it was no
trouble. If you want to install ssh, go to the

No, this machine is not the firewall itself, only a http-server. It's
packets coming through another firewall that are being filtered out. In
that case NAT shouldn't be necessary since it's not doing any
gatewaying/routing. Or am I wrong here...?

No, you're right, you don't have to do anything in the webserver, my question
wasn't right :) what I wanted to ask you is whether the NAT in the firewall is
configured OK.

Also, your firewall should allow to pass all packets with a connection already
established; for example, if your firewall were a Linux box with iptables you
should have something like that:

iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

A linksys WUSB v2.5 will, perhaps also a v2.0. I goofed my first time and
bought a WUSB - it had been a while since it came out so I thought it likely
to be a v2.x though there was no indication whatsoever on the box. I lost
the receipt and was unable to take it back. a v1.5 will not work.

There are others, of course. I would suggest you take a look around the
linux-wlan-ng website: http://www.linux-wlan.org/index.html
Down the page is a table with a list of the working and not working devices
with the linux-wlan-ng drivers. There is an alcatel driver out there that
will work with some devices as well.

I could be wrong here, but I think you may need to enable port
forwarding to pass requests for port 80 on the firewall to port 80 on
the webserver.

Try this (one line):

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i  -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT
--to-destination :80

Replace with your internet interface (ppp0/eth0, whatever)
Replace with the internal ip of your webserver.

Of course, if you have a public address on your web server and traffic
is going straight there, this mail is redundant :)

A simple EUREKA! will suffice, should this fix the problem :)

Kind regards,

John...

[expert] wireless problem

I'm new to the Mandrake mailing lists.

I've just seen the message from VINCENT DANEN in regard of a new version
of initscript to properly configure dynamic configuration of wireless
connexion. I've seen your message in the archive, but I can't reply to
you directly.

I'm in such a situation. I'm currently configured using Mandrake 9.0
from the CD ISO distribution. I tried to update from the new initscripts
available through MandrakeUpdate, but it make my wireless connexion
useless after update (it is working without making the update).

So I can help to try it if you which.

2002-11-18 Thread .
	Well, I do have some new parts installed in the system, but I'm pretty
sure this was happening before I installed the new hardware. I upgraded
the motherboard and CPU to an AMD XP 1600.

  memtest is reporting errors on tests 5 and 8, which the docs say
happen often with AMD XP CPU's and some cheap memory chips. I have a
PNY pc133 256MB chip and a Kingston pc133 256MB chip.  I would not
consider either of these "cheap" memory, and the problem exists with
both chips by themselves, as well as together. I suppose I could try to
find a different RAM chip, in case they are both bad (which I doubt).

  I have several IDE devices, so I tried unplugging all unnecessary
devices for getting to memtest, but the problem still existed. I'm
building a new system, so I grabbed the power supply out of it (which is
bigger), and plugged it up, but that didn't fix the problem either.

  I'm going to see if there's a bios upgrade for my motherboard, but
after that I don't know what to try. It seems like it's either the CPU
or the motherboard ... neither of which I can test individually.

  I'm going to make sure I'm patched to the latest rpms, but I thought

Sounds like a hardware prob to me. Install memtest and reboot to the

Hi David,

if you want 56k dialin connection to your server, your server will require a
digital modem and link to the exchange.
If you have a 56k modem hooked to a anologue (pots) line on you server you
cannot get any higher speed than 33.6k.
Read up on digital to anologue and analogue to digital conversions to find out
why.

Hi Brian. Thanks for the reply. Do you think it might be another of those
situations where its certain hardware combinations that are problematic? Like

So far, from v7.2 thru 8.2, Mandrake has been faultless with my SCSI setup.
