[expert] urpmi: get summaries, etc
Hello, How can i search the names of rpms, and show the summary and description? If i urpmf, it appears to search more. What i'd like is a command line version of what rpmdrake does: once i get it open, it very nicely shows only packages with "nmh" (for example) in the name and i can quickly see the description and summary. It also, on the same page, shows the current version i have installed, if any. Is there a line (or lines) for urpm* that i can use? Otherwise I wonder why? I have used Partition magic 7.0 before I felt I was willing to risk diskdrake, but have not used it since. Unfortunately, unless PM 8 is more capable that PM 7 It does not recognize and partition other than ext2 FAT FAT32 and NTFS if you partitioned anything else, then you might have broken your Linux partitions irreparably :-( On the bright side I could be wrong. I have only ever made a new ext2fs partition with PM 7, but formatted it and everything else with whatever partitioning tool that came with the distro. Except Debian. It uses something that has some bug writeup from which I had a bit of trouble recovering, and that I never used again. I now use diskdrake exclusively. Hope I am wrong. [expert] e2fsck -b 8193 won't help!
Hello I was silly enough to use Partition Magic 8.0 to resize my entire linux hard disk (windows is in another hard disk). The resizing-moving went fine as far as Partition Magic 8.0 is concerned. On Xp I can see the contents of all linux partitions using explore2fs. I'm wondering if what is out on the servers is really 9.2 or is it a cooker snapshot? Also, there is a i586/misc/doc directory that looks like it has a configuration file for 9.2, but I can't figure out how to use it. Since it takes a long time to build the ISOs, trial and error becomes very frustrating. So, has anyone else tried building the ISOs with MakeCD? Joeb p.s. if/when I get this to work, with all of the wrinkles out, I'll post it to the twiki. Hi Joe; In this part of the development cycle cooker as frozen for release is 9.2, 9.2 is cooker to all intents and purposes. The script used to generate the ISOs is slightly different but the packages are basically the same. The only ISOs I've generated are from my "local cooker mirror" and are called "Cooker Download" after generation, but after install the boot splash identifies it as "9.2 Download edition." If you're impatient for the release you could try that, I don't know if it will work still since I did this before rsync started actually pulling new packages. In other words when cooker was still frozen. Have you run gendistrib yet? I believe that's used to clean the trees before building ISOs but I could be wrong. I'm sure there are notes about it on the TWiki (cooker). http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/CookerHowTo#Running_gendistrib There are links and mini how-tos from that page to MakeCD and other tidbits. The CDs I made, did boot, but I didn't try installing because of all of the dependency errors (most of them in apach2, but there were others, too, like gdm). My real reason to try was that I have a high speed connection from work, but not home. But the work connection does work with BitTorrent. So, I could ftp the 9.2 tree down and I thought I would build my own ISOs. Like I said, the process was pretty smooth (although lengthy) and I ended up with 8 CDs (I included contrib, too). But, with all of those dependency errors, I didn't want to risk screwing something up (my test linux box is temporarily in production). In reality, downloading the tree and running MakeCD was not significantly more work that ftp'ing ISOs. Oh well, the powerpack should be shipping in the next two weeks! [expert] Orinoco gold driver problems
I have been trying to get kismet, the wlan sniffer, to work with my orinoco gold. There are patches available for the orinoco driver that allows it to go into monitor mode. The thing is, all the sources indicate that the default driver version in the 2.4.21 kernel series was orinoco 0.13b. The patches available are for 0.13b or later. I check my mandrake 2.4.21 kernel orinoco driver and it is version 0.13a. Why is the mandrake kernel behind the curve with regards to orinoco drivers? I cannot get my kernel orinoco driver patched to permit it to go into monitor mode (I need monitor mode to try to detect a possible wireless ISP from a long distance via a parabolic antenna). I cannot patch the 0.13a orinoco driver with ANY available orinoco patch as they are all for more up-to-date driver versions. I have tried and it totally screws up the orinoco driver. Can anyone tell me how I could go about upgrading my kernel pcmcia orinoco driver WITHOUT having to resort to pcmcia-cs and rebuilding my kernel, etc? Is there no way to upgrade the kernel's orinoco driver and then patch it? praedor -- Faith is the very antithesis of reason, injudiciousness a critical component of spiritual devotion. --Krakauer Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Did anyone find an easy way to extract all the attachments from a mail directory? I thought I recalled someone asking something similar not too long ago, but my search powers were ineffective. I'm trying to clean up my hds some, I have a mbox (copied from maildir) with at least 5000 emails and over 1/2 have attachments, mostly jpg but some png and others. I need to save the attachments to a directory, but don't want to have to do it one by one. :P Is there an easy quick way to do this? thanks, -susan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] Gramofile and Splitting Tracks
Somebody scribbled about Re: [expert] Gramofile and Splitting Tracks >I have had the same prob before, some tapes have a bad sig/noise ratio >or use shorter gaps between songs (or as in the old Chicago soundtrack I >did recently, some songs had no gaps at all). Hmm. I haven't tried this with cassettes but if i remember, some tapes had a signal embedded in them - and i had a tape player years ago that had some kind of music skip feature in that it would seek to the next track. I hardly listen to anything other than cd's nowadays, though. But it brings up a thread on svlug i saw recently where people were discussing related things. Anyway, sox may be of use if you have the cassette .wav file -- there's apparently a 'silence' option that uses a threshold value and silences anything below that value. you might then have better luck in splitting the tracks. Anyway, it was years since i had a box that would do that music search thing, and it seemed to work well only on commercially-produced tapes. >My answer was to split the tracks manually, and I feathered the sound at >the end of each track down to 0 to make it sound better.. it worked IMHO it's better to do it in audacity since you can visualize the parts that are the gaps between the songs. I was planning on splitting up one big mp3 of a full album i had, but then later saw that soneone had posted the same album on usenet, with the songs split :). >Franki -- David E. This reminds me of a guy I once tried to show how to work on a computer. I showed him to start a program using the "start" command in a DOS-window (that was on Windows). It took me a long time to explain to him the difference between the menu and his computer. He thought that what is not on the menu or showing as icon on his desktop is just not there. You still have all these programs (terminal, console, mcc and all others), they just don't show up on the menu. There's no catch at all. You just should read up a bit about the command line. Or, if you are using KDE, read up on KDE which gives you a perfect mini command line to start applications which are not on the menu. You don't know which word to type for to start a terminal? No problem, read up on how to find files, i.e. locate, slocate, which,... There's no catch anywhere, just a lack of reading. If you are a newbie you just have to do a bit of reading to get a basic understanding of your system. If you have used the system for some time and you don't know about all this, you have started playing Bach compositions on your piano without doing the finger training part. Sooner or later it'll come back to you. This is not a kind of newbie bashing, it's just a reminder on the importance to learn the basics. wobo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] 9.2 strange one
Hi , just installed 9.2 well sorta !st attempt tried the upgrade...looked good, but kept throwing errors when loading the modules for the network card, tried different cards too .. 2nd attempt,, this time I installed and did'nt format my home dir. looked good but no matter what could run an app that was OK on 9.1 no digital audio input. So reconfigured the sound card and rebooted, then got something very strange as gnome started got loads of screens up with "no entry" signs on all much bigger than the main window. Went into console mode and deleted everything in my home dir that stated with ".g". Restarted X and got the first time wizard :)) got to the end of that and guess what More damn terms with no entry sins and icons that looked like scrolled paper behind them. And if you click on them a blue patch appears under them for a short time. No I hav'nt been on the wacky backy.. so its now reinstall after ftping files to another machine and hope lightning wont strike twice in the same place. The MD5 checksums were ok on the downloads. [expert] Building ISOs with MakCD
I've downloaded the 9.2 tree and I am attempting to build the ISO images with MakeCD. Using the commands in the README.MakeCD, the ISOs are all created, but there are a lot packages that give dependency errors and are left out. Also, I notice that the descriptions for the ISOs all refer to Cooker-Download 1 (2,3,4,etc). Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

There was a problem with automount in 9.0. This is by memory but someone else will have a better fix. Gary. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[expert] NFS Unmounting problem
Dear All, Recently, I've installed mdk 9.0 on a system to act as a server. I've selected samba-server and samba-winbind, too. I've installed mdk for several times and in those cases just I've selected general options(not by selecting indivitual packets and tools). for exapmle, by selecting Network server, LSB, Development,... radio-boxs, not by clicking the " individual". Anyway, In indivitual election, samba-server, by defalut, is selected but samba-winbind not. The installaiotn is ok but the problem is: When I reboot or shut down my system, After killing and ending all daemons and servers, I always receive this error message: Unmounting NFS file system: Can not MOUNTPROG RPC: RPC: Program not registered. umount2: Device or resource busy... umount: /net: device is busy... And system is going to be HANGED!!! By pressing ^C, I've received this message: " There is no active interface or server in this run level.. to kill" I've taken a look in Control Center, I've seen that in Samba status field, and in import tab, there is an entry: NFS/net{As mount point} pid:178 Anyway, I could not solve the problem. So, pleaser help me. Regards, = Kaveh Gh. Email : [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! I hope that it'll be done in the next couple of days. I'll check back and see if it is and if not, I'll make the addition when I get my account straightened out. Here is the text that I would probably put in. ---cut--- Mandrake 9.1: If you have a NEC CDR-3000A cdrom drive or get the following error with the command: cdrecord -scanbus Cdrecord 2.0 (i586-mandrake-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling Linux sg driver version: 3.1.24 Using libscg version 'schily-0.7' scsibus0: 0,0,0 0) 'YAMAHA ' 'CRW-F1E ' '1.0b' Removable CD-ROM cdrecord: Warning: controller returns wrong size for CD capabilities page. 0,1,0 1) 'NEC ' 'CD-ROM DRIVE:28D' '3.03' Removable CD-ROM This error message refers to the drive following it. You will probably have difficulties doing a direct CD to CD copy as well. You can try to upgrade the firmware of the drive. This works with some didn't work this NEC. If after you upgrade the firmware and you still get this message, you have two options. 1) Rewrite or wait for a fix parts of the cdrecord package and possibly parts of the kernel. 2) Install a CDROM drive that works. I opted for number 2. I didn't have this problem with the hardware in MDK 9.0 and it hasn't been tested with MDK 9.2. This is caused by buggy/non-standard firmware for the CDROM drive. ---cut--- If you want you can put this in the Twiki or I can try to figure it out and put it in on Monday or Tuesday when I have more time. Re: [expert] question on VPN's
Hi James, Just something that I nearly forgot, since your about to play around with IPSEC.. It's about module bug in the IPSEC and Mandrake 9.1 hopefully it's fixed in Mandrake 9.2 O.K. it's a work around, from a post I spotted some time ago, and it does work. --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-04-10 22:23 --- Confirmed bug still exists in kernel 2.4.21-0.15mdk. I didn't fancy recompiling the kernel so I made a workaround. *) Make a backup of the original module: cd /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.XXmdk/kernel/net/ipsec/ cp -a ipsec.o.gz ipsec.o.gz.bkp *) gunzip ipsec.o.gz *) vi -b ipsec.o (edit in binary mode) Search for the string gcc2. Replace with gcc3. Write back the file. *) gzip -9 ipsec.o The modified kernel module should now load fine, e.g. with: service ipsec restart Cheers Mark Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
