I've never understood the desire for a "download manager," except for
modem users. Whatever. I don't use Konq much, but I'd imagine that
right-clicking a link and choosing save-as would do the job.

It is the wrong order, type (the left hand side is expanded to the right
hand side)

norman.zhang: nzhang

I don't use the tcp socket but it seems correct so far. BTW, the tcp
socket needs authentication by default. Possibly you have to add the
port number of the lmtp server.

just like an rpm is nothing more than a cpio archive I guess. URPMI has
the advantages most heavily in assuring that dependencies are
maintained, rpms are signed, and verified. however if you've done all
the leg work. You know that all of the dependencies are met and that
the rpm matches your distro. You end up in the same place.

That sounds pretty much like a adore compromised system. After
reinstalling, the binaries have to be there. If you cant find them,
somthiong is hiding them.

Get chkrootkit, compile it, and run chkproc. I guess, you will get:
Siginvisible Adore found.

2003-11-06 Thread Rob Blomquist
In a previous email Dr. Monkeynoodle spake thusly:

"2 urpmi /the/rpm/you/got. "

Is there an advantage to "urpmi"-ing it rather than "rpm -ivh"-ing it?

It seems to me that urpmi is just a searching front end for rpm.

Fire away.

2003-11-06 Thread Rob Blomquist
Ok, so I want to DL the latest jre from Sun, and I finally make it to
http://www.java.com:80/en/download/manual.jsp

And I click on the link to download it. Kget opens and informs me of a
"malformed URL". So I open moz to the page and download it.

The same prblem kept cropping up when I was downloading bittorrent for the 9.2
Club fiasco. That's where I learned about just opening Moz and getting on
with life.

Is there any solution to the Kget problem that would allow me to use Konq with
confidence. It is my browser of choice.

[expert] Why does my sound not work?

My computer is silent

The mobo is an Intel D865GBF (www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bf). I am
using the onboard sound.

It works fine under Windows98SE.

I use Enlightenment, and I can enable sounds under E, but I don't hear

Rob,

The one thing I would try is to open it in IE or some browser that
does work. Then save the page(s) to disk. Then try it locally. If it
works locally it's some kind of messed up cgi, jsp or server side
include. If not then check the code for personal info and send the tgz
to the people at Moz and see if they have an answer.

Hi all. I've got a bt878 tuner (ATI TV wonder VE, also have an old STB
TV PCI bt848 with the same issues), soundblaster live 5.1, and 3com
cyclone ethernet card (eth0) on an Asus nforce2 board (A7N8X) with a
Geforce2mx. On board sound is disabled in the bios, on board ethernet is
running as eth1. If the tv tuner is not in use (i.e. I haven't started
xawtv or motv) everything's fine. A few seconds after I start up
motv/xawtv either the tv tuner, sound card or ethernet will stop
working. The tuner's image will freeze, the sound card will start
playing static or the ethernet just won't connect (I'm on broadband).
I'm running mandrake 9.1 with a kernel 2.4.21-0.25 with these parameters:

hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi noapic acpi=off pci=noacpi

Not sure if the pci=noapic does anything worthwhile, but my system is
completely useless without the acpi=off line.

Moving the card around seems to change which device goes dead, but no
matter where I put it one card will go dead. I've managed to get it to
the point where there are no IRQ conflicts but that didn't help. Right
now the tv card is sharing an irq with usb-ohci. My /proc/interrupts:

  CPU0
 0: 58151 XT-PIC timer
 1: 3942 XT-PIC keyboard
 2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
 5: 26 XT-PIC usb-ohci, bttv
 8: 1 XT-PIC rtc
10: 12102 XT-PIC ehci-hcd, eth1
11: 37089 XT-PIC eth0, EMU10K1
12: 49692 XT-PIC usb-ohci, nvidia
14: 22889 XT-PIC ide0
15:149 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
LOC: 58118
ERR: 20
MIS: 0

Reloading the driver doesn't help, only rebooting. I have no idea what
the cause/solution might be. Can someone with more hardware experience
give me some insight? Does anyone have this working on a simular set up?
Thanks again :).

You are correct, there is a free version. But the Real One player to use
with the Real One SuperPass is not the same. The free player cannot access
Real One SuperPass pay subscription content.

http://www.real.com/

My favorite radio station that streams on the net (200 miles from where I
live has a Real One stream, but there is no linux version of it. I have to
be happy with recorded events, and not the live feed any longer.

[expert] problems after upgrade mandrake 9.0 to 9.2?

2003-11-06 Thread Vincent Chen
Hi, all

After upgrade to mandrake 9.2,I have several new
problems:

1. Since freeswan 2.x not working in my environment, I
installed mandrake 9.0 in another partition. Can I use
LILO installed in MBR from mandrake 9.2 to boot into
mandrake 9.0? I tried to duplicate 9.2 text segment
and change device, boot to 9.2 is ok but not 9.0. Is
there any working example?

2. I tried to restore a partition image which stored
in encrypted loop device. While running partimage
0.6.2 from mandrake 9.2 contrib pacakge, it complain
about not support encryption. Why it work under
mandrake 9.0?

3. Can I tell mandrake 9.2 which sound driver to use?
It prefer i810_audio but I like nvaudio. Everytime I
change setting in /etc/modules.conf, mandrake 9.2
change it back next reboot.

Thanks and to be continued...

[expert] Konq/Moz Crash during Web Browse.

2003-11-06 Thread Rob Blomquist
I have a Konq and Moz crash that really bugs me, unfortunately, I can't send
you the site as it is an Outlook Webmail site, and is password protected. So
don't even think about asking, as I am not giving my password out.

Here's the deal: if I attempt to respond to an email, the window containing
the email will crash. The main window is alive and well. Formerly, I have
been able to use this site with either Konq or Moz. The site uses both Java
and javascript to do its job. I have installed Kaffe to handle java requests,
as I have not found a jre for Mandrake available (man, am I lazy!).

I opened both from console, and only Konq gave me information:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] robbo]$ konqueror

What could I do to explore this crash, or is there enough of an answer here?

Re: [expert] Anyone connecting to WebDAV?

Hi,

This is how it is described in the readme file. This however does not
work. I get the following error:
/mnt/dav: invalid option -- u
ERROR: problem parsing cmdline args
This:

mount.davfs http://www.server.domain/dav /mnt/dav

Generates no error, but it causes /mnt/dav to generate this error:

# ls -l /mnt
ls: /mnt/dav: Permission denied

So, is anyone using davfs successfully?
Despite the docs, it looks like it wants just 'u', and 'p', rather than
'-u' and '-p':

Actually, I got the same results with no user or pass:

-rwxrw-r--1 500 50095 Nov 3 13:16 test.php*
mount.davfs apparently has a problem if access is limited. What I have
setup on the server side is the following:

Require valid-user

If I comment out the and lines, then I get
prompted for a password but the mounting still fails since I am yet to
find a way to pass the username. Not -u nor u seem to do the job.

If I completely comment this section out (which also means that the
share is open to everyone, something I cannot allow) the mount works
OK.

Now, if I was unable to mount the share anywhere else I would have
suspected a problem with my setup, but I have no problem mounting this
share from OS X.

What filesystem are you using? Versions of XFS have been known to trash
files, leaving them filled with zeros. This is at least for versions prior

I have created user nzhang and mailbox nzhang in cyrus. I also added

nzhang: norman.zhang

to /etc/postfix/aliases. I still can't receive mail in cyrus' inbox. BTW,
I'm using lmtp TCP sockets as per suggestion given in README.RPM. I changed

mailbox_transport = lmtp:$myhostname

Is this correct?

: Problem is that the normal PowerPack consists of 7 CDs but the clubbies
: were only offered the first 3 CDs. So in package selection you are able
: to select packages which are on the commercial apps CD in the PowerPack
: but not part of the download.

Why the deuce didn't they adjust the hdlist.cz files to match what
they provided to club members. I shelled out $120 specifically so I
could download the Powerpack stuff and be off and running. The least
Mandrake could have done for us "paying customers" is get the d/l
version correct instead of what appears to be a hack job. But I won't
go into that now.

: Simply speaking: You should not select any package which is in the

Right.

 : What can you do?
 :
: First you can have a look at the CDs with any filemanager, Linux or
: Windows, no matter. Look into the directories "RPMS" and list the files
: there. Then avoid typical commercial software in your package selection.

Ok, this helps. Thanks. It also confirms what I've learned
in goofing around with this.

Since I get the digest form of this list I have to wait some time to
see replies. Working into the wee hours last night I actually figured
some of this out on my own.

So, for example, on CD1 I find the file `pkg-9.2-FiveStar-i586.idx'
which has nice entries like:

 MandrakeLinux9.2-Sources-1 tetex-doc-2.0.2-10mdk.i586

Well, tetex-doc is one of the items I selecteded---hardly a commercial
application. But "Sources-1" is not one of the three CDs provided to
Silver club members. Thanks Mandrake! (Why "tetex-doc" is considered
a "Source file" I have no idea. It looks like someone said "hey,
there's some space left over here on the Sources-1 CD so lets just put
some of the leftovers there. ½-:))

I know, I know. I could go over to the ftp site and download it by hand.
Let's not go there. :-)

My memory may be failing me but, as I recall, when I did that it just

That's what I'm in the process of trying to do now.
I'm struggling with "urpmi" on the commandline but I'll get it
eventually. In fact just to force the issue I gave the
urpmi database a frontal lobotomy with `urpmi.removemedia -a'.

So now I _must_ learn how to work urpmi!

I didn't know that `ezurpmi' was working for 9.2. The big red

say otherwise. I'll check it out.

Couldn't agree more. I love (sic) that Mozilla offers a "pop up counter".

[expert] Anyone connecting to WebDAV?

2003-11-06 Thread Schwartz Avi
Hi,

Using 9.2. Installed davfs and now I am trying to mount a WebDAV
share. I am trying the following:

mount.davfs http://www.server.domain/dav /mnt/dav -u username -p
password

This is how it is described in the readme file. This however does not
work. I get the following error:

/mnt/dav: invalid option -- u
ERROR: problem parsing cmdline args
This:

mount.davfs http://www.server.domain/dav /mnt/dav

Generates no error, but it causes /mnt/dav to generate this error:

# ls -l /mnt
ls: /mnt/dav: Permission denied
total 3
dr-xr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 Sep 26 04:31 cdrom/
drwxrwxrwx0 root root0 Nov 6 09:32 floppy/
So, is anyone using davfs successfully?

Thanks,
Avi

No, it is not that bad at all.

http://www.mail-abuse.org/cgi-bin/lookup?198.144.206.157
lists the IP as open relay. So the Messages have been delivered by
localhost. But it is not the MTA that is missconfigured, but the
Web/Proxy Server.

Either a Squid or a Apache mod_proxy, I guess.

This question got me curious so I went to CNN to look. I found that you can't
view any of the videos if you run any "Pop-Up blockers." Or if you don't have
"Real One Pass." Whatever that is...

They appear to be in Real One format but I'll never know 'cause I'm damned if
I'll let pop-ups happen anywhere.

I recently saw something really simple and evil :-) It was a ten minute
cron job that compared timestamps of a few files like /etc/password and
/etc/shadow with copies of them that were placed in a hidden directory.
If the compare failed, the machine would wall that you'd tripped it up
with a code message -- admins would realize their mistake, crackers
would know something was wrong but wouldn't know what. Sixty seconds
later, shutdown -h now :-)

configured by mandrake as "proxy:unix:passwd.byname $alias_maps". I
didn't know it. So it should be modified to blank if you want mail for

The 9.2 tree has also had an update to contrib directory as well.

No, Your MTA (usualy postfix) does not know anything of the data stored
in cyrus. By default postfix only knows addresses from users stored in
the local user base (unix users) and the aliased addresses.

If nzhang is not a local user and not listed as an alias, postfix
rejects the mail.
Not really, it depends on configuration. Since with cyrus it's possible
to have mailboxes unrelated to local users, normally postfix passes
whatever it doesn't recognize to cyrus (and if you want "single message
store", i.e. a single copy is stored is the same message is for multiple
recipients this has to be done even before alias expansion).
In fact, I don't even know how to configure postfix to check for local
users (using mailbox_transport = lmtp:).
Now, if it were possible for postfix to open the lmtp connection just
after if has received the RCPT TO: to check that the cyrus mailbox
exists, and reject it directly if it doesn't instead of trying to bounce
it later, that would be interesting.

[expert] Mandrake as a PDC, with Samba and OpenLDAP

2003-11-06 Thread Jason Williams
Good morning everyone.

I'll get right to it. Im looking for information about the stability,
security and performance of using Mandrake as a Primary Domain controller,
running Samba (would like to use 3.0) and OpenLDAP 2.1.22.

I originally was going to use FreeBSD 4.9 as our platform of choice, but
found out that FreeBSD 4.x does not have support for nsswitch, which as
most of you know, is essential for using LDAP as the authentication
mechanism on the PDC.

FreeBSD is still a possibility, but I would like to explore Mandrake as well.
I should Mention that Red Hat is not an option. Never liked Red Hat and
never will. Gentoo is not an option either. Debian, although very solid,
lacks updated packages.

With that in mind, i've narrowed down my decision between Mandrake and FreeBSD.

I was hoping to get some feedback from any other people here who are
currently using Mandrake as a PDC with Samba and LDAP. I would be very
grateful if anyone would care to share their thoughts, suggestions,
disappointments etc. with me.

Im trying to find out:
Stability:
Security:
Performance.
Our network is currently 40 users, but that will indeed grow to at least 80
by the end of next year.
The machine:

If you've been running cooker between 9.1 and 9.2, what's to stop you
running cooker between 9.2 and Mandrake XP? cooker is unstable
and requests a good citizen effort to help with debugging. If you're
okay with those, go with cooker. If not, stay on 9.2 and wait for the
release, then debug that. cutting edge == buggy.

most likely there's a hard drive deleting stuff on the drive. I'd bet

True enough, but there are many reasons for choosing a piece of
software. Security is one of them and an important one, but if it was
your only criteria you'd be on OpenBSD instead of Mandrake :-)

Switching mailers entails starting the learning curve over. Maybe David
will find qmail easier to understand and configure than postfix and the
learning curve will be worth it... or maybe he'll burn a day working
with it before deciding that he should have stuck with postfix in the
first place or gone to exim. (No, sendmail is not an option).
Architecture, license, support community, and ease of
installation/management have to be considered along with security track
record.

I installed Mandrake 9.1 a while back and have used Cooker sources over
time such that I pretty much have a 9.2 system running.

My question is...should I continue to use Cooker sources for updating or
migrate over to 9.2 sources? I want to keep the system rather cutting
edge as far as packages go, but it has been inferred from others that
Cooker is no longer the way to go.

that's my advice. Depending on the amount/urgency of email, I don't
think this is a good time to be investigating other mailer packages, but
if you've got the time go for it. I'd recommend Exim over Qmail though,
as licensing is important to me, but qmail is a good mailer.

I'd also recommend joining the postfix mailing list and asking for help.

You'll need modelines for all the resolutions you want to run for that

[expert] programms disapearing..

2003-11-06 Thread Vtucatz elPunishar
hi everybody,

strange thing are happening on my box.
i'm running mdk 9.1.

i wanted to reboot about an hour ago, because i the system had problem with
starting new applications (a java app with gui, or the software installer).
while shutting down, the "logout" box of KDE didn't contain any letters but
only
box-shaped characters.

i then halted the system.
after booting, it didn't start an X server...
i've foudn out so far that things like drakconf, smb and XFree86 (the binary
in
/usr/X11R6/bin) are suddenly missing...

how could such a thing happen?
i sure didn't do anything like deleting this stuff.
could missing dependencies have such dire consequences ? i doubt it, but.. ?

and i didn't force an install that had missing dependencies... the only
thing i can
remember is having installed libpng-1..something over/or replacing linpng3.
but that was several reboots ago and the system still worked fine.

is there a linux virus deleting random stuff on the drive?

please help!
thanks in advance

Geesh. Disable ftp at least, if you disable no other service. If you don't
do remote X at all, disable X service as well.

Are you serving a webpage locally? Disable http and perhaps https.

I have the following nmap output:
PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcpopen ssh
25/tcpopen smtp
631/tcp open ipp
1241/tcp open nessus
6000/tcp open X11
1/tcp open snet-sensor-mgmt

I run my own postfix mailserver for me, myself, and I. It is not a relay (and
as others have indicated, it doesn't quite look like yours is really).

I could disable X11 and nessusd I suppose as though I do the occassional
remote X thing and sometimes use nessus against those who scan me (I like to
light up their "warning lights" if they have any such thing to let them know
that their target is on to them), it is rare.

Basically, do you actually NEED the services you are running? Any that are
not really used/needed, turn them off.

Install the "tree" RPM (which provides the tree console app), it's ideal
for this; it's recursive by default. For a directories-only listing:

tree -d [dir]

To include hidden files, as well as regular files:

tree -A [dir]

I purchased the CDs from Mandrake and await their arrival before I do
anything. I COULD download the isos at work, transfer the files to my
desktop (crossover cable) and burn the CDs but part of me wants to wait for
the official CDs. I am hoping that the final release CDs that I get will
contain fixes/updates that were available shortly after the release online of
9.2.

Is this wasted hope? Will the official, public release be no different than
the already available distro online or will it contain updates/fixes? I have
downloaded all the current update rpms so that they would be available as
needed immediately after install but if I could just go with the official CDs
then I could free up a lot of HDD space and delete the rpms.

I have borked my main.cf file in the past, not to the point of turning my

I don't have specific info about your particular RAID controller, but my
understanding is that regular ATAPI devices like DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, etc. will
NOT work from a RAID controller. Only hard drives. You might want to move
the DVD/CD devices to a regular IDE controller and put only hard drives on
the RAID controller.

[expert] glxinfo crashes; and solution.

2003-11-06 Thread Turgut Kalfaoglu

This morning, after doing an RPM -U of xine and its libraries, I noticed
that kwrite would not work, nor would glxinfo ; it crashed at startup.
I noticed that /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1 ->  libGLwrapper?? something.
I had the CVS-copy of DRI XFree86, so I did a make install, and I have the
utilities back working; that is, direct writes enabled, glxinfo working,
etc.

I just wondered why my libGL got pointed to that "wrapper" whatever it
was.. now I see that /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1 -> libGL.so.1.2

PS: Xine is excellent :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the CTRL-ALT-[keypad-minus] (got it
enabled), but it didn't do anything the resoultion. I had to config through
control center. Is there some trick to activating this particular keyboard

No, Your MTA (usualy postfix) does not know anything of the data stored
in cyrus. By default postfix only knows addresses from users stored in
the local user base (unix users) and the aliased addresses.

If nzhang is not a local user and not listed as an alias, postfix
rejects the mail.

"R" means "recursive" so it lists all dirs and their subdirs
"h" - human-readable sizes, e.g. 10K, 1.5M
"l" - full list (permissions, sizes etc.)

Hi David,

Maybe my behaviour is a bit unmannered but I have ran some tests against your
IP, to help you fix your box (We are talking about m206-157.dsl.tsoft.com,
aren't we?)

Your postfix says:

554 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Relay access denied.

Seems ok.

Portscanner Nmap says:

Port State Service
21/tcp openftp
22/tcp openssh
25/tcp opensmtp
80/tcp openhttp
111/tcpopensunrpc
135/tcpfilteredloc-srv

138/tcpfilterednetbios-dgm

445/tcpfilteredmicrosoft-ds
631/tcpopenipp
642/tcpopenunknown
6000/tcp openX11

Do these ports corresond to the services that you want to offer? Otherwise,
shield them off. Do you know how to work with shorewall to accomplish that?

Good luck,
Stefan.

Personally I've had zero trouble installing qmail and zero trouble
administering qmail. Most of the complaints I've seen about qmail in my
own work experience have come from people that don't really know what
they are doing, or are too lazy to tackle a learning curve.

The fact is that postfix is not as secure as qmail. This isn't a matter
that's up for arguability, it's a matter that is an established fact
based on bugtraq archives. I've been monitoring the bugtraq mailing
list for over 5 years now and I have consistently seen postfix security
problems come up over and over again. Qmail, on the other hand, has to
have made some kind of Guiness World record for NO security breaches or
problems; ever. There have been problems with some of the patches that
people have submitted, but there have never been any security problems
with the core programs that were authored by Dan Bernstein. I
personally have never seen a program with this kind of security record.

I know about the rivalry between postfix and qmail on the newsgroups.
Based on the information I have gained over the last 5 years, postfix
has had security problems and qmail has not. Qmail has a pristine
operating history and postfix does not. It's just that simple.

My advice, which again will look like a cop-out, but in actuality is
very serious, is that you switch to qmail. Vincent Danen, rpmhelp.net
LX
No doubt about it, Qmail is a good package...

but postfix is pretty good also and it might be worth finding out what
the problem is...

I have postfix setup here to process the mail for about 9 domains (and
counting) and I've not had a prob with open relay..
In fact my email log report shows about 30 odd failed relay attempts a
day...
