Even gaming is getting closer! But yeah I have an unsupported USB
Lexmark X83 so have to go into windows for printing and scanning and
games, but all my mp3's are on an ext3 partition! There are more
choices for browsers, word processors, etc. on Linux. Cd burning even
now works thanks to the helpful and smart people on this list. :-)

I know this is a billing question, but was wondering if anyone has paid

I paid the 12th, figured it take a day or something but it still hasn't
shown up? Hmmm. I still have the transaction number and stuff, I'll

Re: [expert] Beta 3 - ISO buring problems

2002-03-02 Thread Brandon Dorman

I'm the guy that had the, "cd burning session from he**" as one list
member put it. I never got the cd's burnt, but I am going to buy
Mandrake 8.2 when it comes out. I have an old phillips 36610.
Approaching 3 years old, its a 2x2x4. Unfortunately I went to my bank
account and have a lot less money than I thought (I'm in college, my
monetary assets aren't over $1200, so $200 is quite significant.) It
does fine for most stuff, just takes a while.

Heh, I'm a freshman in college. Although I wasn't offended by the post,
I appreciate people looking out for the civility of this list. No one
wants to see too much BASHing on the list. Midterms have hit, all i
have time for is: eat, study, bathroom, study, class. Notice the
absence of sleep... pray for me :-) After spring break (which oddly
for me is next week) I will be back and attack this whole problem of
burning iso's with a vengeance. Plus i am sick today, probably because
of 9 hours of sleep over the past 48 hours... college life is awesome
except for the school part. (look how much i rambled just now... geez)

So bummer, looks like it is corrupt. Will have to rsync it sometime.
Yes, this is turning out to be the download from hell but at least im
learning techincally and about the mandrake community. i'd never tried

2002-02-24 Thread Brandon Dorman

I'll try doing it with the data tag, but here is the site i got my
original information off of.
http://linuxdocs.org/sln/cdcommands/

the pertinant section:
"
Writing an ISO to a CD-ROM using cdrecord

Assuming that all you want to do is create a CD based on the ISO 9660
file system standard, you can quickly burn the CD using the following
command:
cdrecord -v -pad speed=1 dev=0,0,0 src.iso

src.iso is the source filename of the ISO you are burning to the
CD-ROM."

hmm. I'll let you all know the results of
cdrecord -v speed=1 dev=0,1,0 -data mandrake_file.iso

Thanks.

2002-02-22 Thread Brandon Dorman

Hey guys,

Finally got beta 3 cd 1 and cd 2 downloaded! Joy of joys! However,
I've never burned an iso before in linux! I just now burnt both cd's
only to disover now that they are still on there as, ".iso" and aren't
bootable or anything! Bummer. (I'm assuming cd1 of even the mandrake
beta would be bootable, after all I'm sure they want to test the
installer as well. :-)) My cdrecord options look like this:
cdrecord -v -pad speed=1 dev=0,1,0 MandrakeLinux-8.2beta3-CD1.i586.iso

How can I modify it to "expand" the iso onto the cd and allow me to boot
from it as if I had bought it? Again, much thanks.

[expert] Re: rsync problem (was beta2 to beta3)

2002-02-21 Thread Brandon Dorman

Ok, I got to 515mb this time on Beta3 CD 1 and it failed. So I went to
your page. I got stuck when it says about "must start with a module,"
and I can't figure it out. Your explanation isn't the most clear,
sorry.

my command right now is:
rsync -a -vvv --progress
ftp.orst.edu::/pub/mandrake-iso/i586/MandrakeLinux-8.2beta3-CD1.i586.iso
MandrakeLinux-8.2beta3-CD1.i586.iso

Just for info, the full path of the iso is:
ftp://ftp.orst.edu/pub/mandrake-iso/i586/MandrakeLinux-8.2beta3-CD1.i586.iso

I am su when doing this. Any comments? thanks.

Right, my main thing is to get a feel of Mandrake. By using the newest
beta i can get a feel of how the 8.2 final will be before buying it.
Makes complete sense about the update utility for beta's, Cooker is much
like RH's rawhide right? The current version of the distro as it is
worked on, from what I saw from the mandrake website. But once you get
to a final distro is rsync what they use for keeping things in sync?

Yeah, this whole college ethernet thing has spoiled me. Now when I go
home its like, "wow, I can't believe I used to use this!" But hey, they
use Solaris. :-)

p.s. Thanks for the kind and informative answers. On the Red Hat list
it seems whenever someone says, "I'm coming from such and such a
distribution..." they first bash that distro then say why RH is
*better*. Nice not to see that here.

Great, thanks. On rsync, I've seen a ton of mention of it on the
K12LTSP listserv which I'm also a part of. I'll be doing that. thanks
guys, hopefully I'll be e-mailing you from Mandrake soon. :-)(not that I
hate RH, just want to try something new and the whole apt-get-like
capabilities of Mandrake's RPM installer sound great)

Well, the second cd quit downloading at 612 megabytes out of 648
possible, and wouldn't resume without losing it all, so I guess I
answered my own question. I'll start downloading Beta 3, should finish
it in 10 days... :-)

[expert] Beta2 to beta3

2002-02-21 Thread Brandon Dorman

Hello,

I've been a fan of Red Hat for almost three years, really diving into
it in the past 6 months (recompiled the 2.4.17 kernel, got my ide cd
burner working, sound card working now, almost got my printer working)
but recently have read some stuff that makes Mandrake sound very
attractive! So I started to download the beta iso's. This was a few
days ago. My campus' network connection has been very slow at times,
going from 100KB/S all the way down to 4KB/S. I am about done with CD2
and noticed that Beta3 has been released. Is there a utility like
up2date in RH that makes it pretty easy to upgrade once I've gotten it
installed? no matter what I'll probably buy the 8.2 boxed set if I like
it. But in the meantime I do like stability. :-) Thanks!
