One of the reasons for MD5 values is to make sure the transfer of data or
iso is
successful. Did you check the MD5 values on the 98 box? Also Nero has a prob-
lem burning "track-at-once" so select "disc-at-once".
Use name brand CDRs not geneic no name stuff. And the last thing I can of
is if
your recorder doesn't support "Burnproof" slow down the burn rate then try
making
an iso off the burned CD it should be the same as the original.

I keep getting errors (Write error) after about 2 thirdsof the iso. I checked all 3 ISO files and get the same error. I tried 4different CD media, get the same error.Otherwise the Plextor works ok and I just copied a Mandrake 8.1 CD withthe same device and the same media and the same software without errors.Any idea?

Mike,
I downloaded matrix from yours (ftp), put it in /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/
and made it executable (chmod +x). But when I start xscreensaver I can't
select it because doesn't appear in the screensaver as selectable.

Do I need to do anything else?

Thanks in advance for your help..

For some reason, mandrake has chosen not to include xmatrix in their
xscreensaver package. I extracted it from another distro though, and its
on my ftp server if you want it.

ftp://ftp.holt-tech.net/pub/xmatrix

Once you get the package, drop it in your /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver
directory (assuming you have xscreensaver installed).

[expert] SuSE 7.3 Personal

2002-02-05 Thread Dwaine Felch

Well I found out why I had to buy Suse 7.3 instead of downloading trying
out first
before I buy that's because it's no good. During installation it locked
numerous times;
had to finish the install in safe mode just so I could get to the
desktop, it can't detect
monitors and is very buggy once up and running. No more Suse for me.

Redmond (Lycoris) and Redhat are close seconds so I don't buy. Mandrake
is what I
keep buying each and every time a PowerPack comes outs.

RE: [expert] low-level format

2002-02-04 Thread Dwaine Felch

Most hard drive manufactures provide a utilities disk downloadable for free;
on the drive is a program which will zero the drive which is the state it
was
when new. Low level formatting a IDE drive is very risky not cut and dry
like
SCSI, chances are a low level would ruin it for sure. If writing zeros
(erasing)
the drive doesn't fix its issues it probably is time to deep six it.

Some BIOSes allow you to initiate a low-level format via their setup
routine.
Otherwise, look for utilities on your hard drive manufacturer's web site.

and
Mandrake has a lot of catching up to do.

Do you have any other device on the second channel?

I.E. two hard drives?

Some hard IDE drives do not co-exist well with others.

Your Motherboard supports UDMA 100 speeds.

Are you REALLY using a UDMA cable instead of a standard IDE one?

Linux cranks the drive speed up, so you really need the extra shielding
on the cable.

Also try lowering the xfer rate on the drive. Drop it to 33. Does this
improve matters?

Hello:

I've problems performing copies from first IDE channel to second
one. After a few files copied the system freezes. I wonder if someone
else has found similar problems because i cannot find any configuration
error in the hardware.
The box is an AMD Athlon 1.2 build with a Soltek mainboard (VIA
Apollo KT266 series, South Bridge VT8233, North Bridge VT8366). I've
enable DMA in both disks; and the filesystem is reiserfs.

Any comment will be wellcome. Thank you.
