[expert] 8.2 how to make supermount work?

2002-03-26 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

I was crasy enough to try to upgrade from rc1 to 8.2 (I said crasy because
all other attempts ended up in a full install). Fortunately everything
worked except for supermount. It is not working anymore. How can I fix that
manually?

Many thanks

Re: [expert] Irregular Mouse in 8.2

2002-03-28 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hi

I have the same problem. I have also complained about that when installing
8.0 on my PC. ctrl+alt+any other console is part of my daily routine!

Things can get worse when using two mice. I am running win4lin on display 2
with a ps2 mouse and KDE on display 1 with a serial mouse. Winlin2-ps2
mouse kills serial mouse on KDE. The only way to get the serial mouse
working is to shutdown win4lin.

[expert] X server is gone - font "fixed" not found

2000-11-18 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello
Could you someone help me to get X-server back? The error messages
I've got are:

1) Failure for servers telnet 974581593 localhost (I had to install 7.2
a couple of
times just because of this message)

2) Could not open default font 'fixed'

Please help me out; I can't stand installing 7.2 one more time. My 7.02
is running
since January without a problem; 7.2, on the other hand, is a nightmare.

Thanks a lot.

[expert] IP MASQ - Time out

2000-12-03 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello
I have just installed strong rules for ipchains on my linux box (7.2).
The internal network (NT) seems to be working fine but for some external
address I've got an error
message: request time out. I have also noticed that pinging the linux
server from the linux seever
itself returns: No buffer space available.

How can I figure out how it is going on?

Many thanks

[expert] Diald, kppp and Mandrake 7.2 - installation issue

2000-12-18 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello
I am trying to install diald with Mandrake 7.2 Kppp is running

I read diald Howto many times but to no avail. Could someone out

help me out?
I want to run diald (I got the latest mandrake rpm file .99.1) without
wrecking kppp and, if
possible, taking advantage of all scripts that I have already installed

Hello

That package is not broken. It is the exactly same one I have used on LM

What do you mean by update?

Many thanks

Uhm, you sure that you want to update this? Anyhow, it seems like rpm
thinks this package is broken.

[expert] Where did LM 8.1 hide /dev/sda4 (parallel zip)?

2001-12-20 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

My parallel zip worked just fine with LM 8.0. Unfortunatley I had to
upgrade my system to LM 8.1 (I want o to run multiple Xs). I said
unfortunately because LM 8.1 has lots of funny stuff (for instance, ps2
mouse -gpm - is a nightmare!).

I tried to issue the command moutn -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip2 but an error
message came out "no such device". LM 8.1 defined /dev/sda4 on fstab but
I've checked the dev dir and I couldn't find sda4 (though /dev/sda is
pointing the right place - cdrecord -scanbus confirms that my system has a
zip on 0,6,0).

How can I create /dev/sda4? Or how can I mount /dev/sda4?

Many thanks

Ed

Re: [expert] Where did LM 8.1 hide /dev/sda4 (parallel zip)?

2001-12-21 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

I have been using my zip drive with linux since Caldera 1.3 in 1999. All
zips have the fourth partition. I have to reformat the disk if I want an
ext2 (see mini-howto on zip). You can check that by issuing the command
fdisk /dev/sda and then list the partitions.

As for your questions, the answer is no because linux can't mount "the whole
disk". It is like trying to mount /dev/hda as /. One normally mounts
/dev/hda1 or /dev/hda2 or etc.

Many thanks

Ed

Re: [expert] Where did LM 8.1 hide /dev/sda4 (parallel zip)?

2001-12-23 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

The zip drive is working now. What I did was:

mknod b part1 8 1
mknod b part2 8 2
mknod b part3 8 3
mknod b part4 8 4

The number 8 comes from the block device created by mandrake.

Now I can mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip2 where /dev/sda4 is a soft link
to scsi/.../part4.

Thanks a lot.

[expert] SCSI Zip drive under 8.1

2002-01-17 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

I am trying to get a second zip drive to work my system (LM 8.1). The first
device is a parallel zip drive and works fine with ppa. The second one is
connected to scsi card, tekram 390-F. dmesg shows that 8.1 finds the scsi
card and the scsi zip but then the whole thing disappeared (that is, the
scsi2 host is detached). After that I can't find the scsi zip.

/dev/sda is the parallel zip. What could be the scsi drive?

What am I doing wrong?

Re: [expert] mandrake 8.2

2002-01-22 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

I had no problem to install 8.0 and 8.1 on my celeron too. The video card
i810e gave some trouble as far as multiple sessions were required. It
didn't work at on 8.0 but works on 8.1 (one has to change XF86Config though)
without DRI.

I have tried to install fbdev developed by Antonino Daplas (nice guy!) but
it didn't work out as the mandrake kernel didn't accept the patches very
well. I am now running kernel2.17mdk that comes with a patch for i810fbdev
but I didn't figure out how to enable it. dmesg | grep framebuffer doesn't
show a thing which means that framebuffer is not there.

At least multiple sessions work with the normal i810.o drive. Not in the
conventional way but it works.

startx --:1 vt 08 didn't work but startx -- :1.0 does. Why?

I hope that 8.2 allows me to have framebuffer on my intel 810e.

Ed

[expert] Roadrunner and Mandrake 8.1? Some problems!

2002-02-13 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

Although I have no problem to use netscape, kmail, ftp and other network
programmes with roadruuner, there is a couple of things that don't work:

a) ping - it doesn't work. Why?
b) Why does dhpcd changes the computer name from localhost to Computer?
This wrecks my samba. Is there a way out here?

Many thanks

Re: [expert] DVD (newbie) full screen

2002-02-21 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

Thanks a lot for all help.

I can now watch DVD movies on my linux box (not illegally as far as I could
understand). The movie I've rent was on widescreen (cinemascope) not in the
whole screen. I guess if it were it would be distorted. Anyway I came to
know that ogle doesn't implement the "wholescreen" I am talking about.
PowerDvD that comes with the DvD drive couldn't get the "wholescreen" too. I
can't be sure if there is an option on PowerDvd to get it since my windows
won't work anymore (It doesn't even boot).

Thanks

[expert] Help! No lilo - no nothing!

2002-03-03 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

I have installed linux Mandrake on my notebook. The installation went fine

lilo. I have Windows Xp Home Edition and Mandrake 8.2beta (don't call me

I can run LM 8.2 if I use the boot diskette (it didn't skip this step).
LM 8.2 is running ok. I can't run Xp since I have no boot diskette for the OS.

How can I fix lilo so as to have a dual boot?

My notebook is Sony VAIO.

Re: [expert] Help! No lilo - no nothing! (odd solution)

2002-03-04 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello

Thanks for the help.

a) I did install lilo at least a dozen times (playing compact. lba, linear,
menu etc.).

b) I managed to get the menu at boot time by removing the batttery and
putting it back again. Yes, somehow SONY doesn't like changes on lilo, so by
removing any kind of power suppy from the notebook SONY's "memory" is lost
and lilo changes are accepted.

The only problem is something funny characters just before the word boot:. I
have nmo idea what causes that.

Many thanks

[expert] Is there a list of bugs for 7.2 beta 3?

2000-10-18 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello
I am running 7.2 beta 3 on my pc. I noticed that KDE
is not working as it should. Is there a place where I can find the
bugs for this new release? Is there a list for discussing problems
with 7.2?

Thanks a lot.

Eduardo

[expert] How to compile a kernel with the same options of the default one?

2000-10-19 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello
I want to test kernel 2.4.0 but, at the same, I want to compile with
the same options of
a standard mandrake 7.0 kernel. Is it possible? If so, how?

Many thanks

[expert] VMware and turning on DGA mode

2000-11-03 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello
It has been suggested that my question on dga with vmware should be
posted to
this list, os here it is:

I need to turn the option DGA on in XF86Config so as to use vmware.
Would someone know how to do it? I checked XF86Config and there is
nothing there relating to dga. The video card is an old Cirrus Logic
5465 and my pc is
running 7.2.

Many thanks

Eduardo

[expert] VMware and Mandrake 7.2 blues - Please help me out!

2000-11-11 Thread Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes

Hello
I have installed vmware 2.0.3 under Mandrake 7.2. Unfortunately things
went as I though they would be:
1) NO DGA modes even after checking, rechecking if the line omit dga is
commented out on XF86Config. Is there anything else I can do?
2) The parallel zip stops working as soon as vmware is on.
3) All printouts sent from the host get stuck.

If you have a similar experience or a solution, please let me know.

Many thanks

Eduardo
