[expert] Abiword MDK-8.2

2002-03-27 Thread Fedneg

Hello:

I can't find Abiword in MDK-8.2 download version. I've tried to install
latest cooker *.src.rpm but compilation gives me errors. Finally, I
tried to install the rpm binaries from the project home page. Again got
errors: libpng.so.2 is needed.
Has someone got installed the latest version of Abiword in MDK-8.2?

[expert] Weel USB Mouse and Nautilus

2002-02-19 Thread Fedneg

Hello:

I'm using Mandrake 8.1 in an Athlon box with optical Logitech iFeel
Mouse (USB). The weel mouse works OK in ALL applications but Nautilus. I
did not care very much for a long but yesterday give a try to Mandrake

my Woody instalation I am wondering what's wrong in my Mandrake
instalations.
I send you my XF86Config-4 file, if it may help.

Thank you in advance.

Where is the Mac client for TighVNC? I just can find the UNIX, Windows
and java ones.

the other way around. Since Windows doesn't multitask everyone winds up with the
same desktop, and you tend to crash windows (what a suprise) fairly easy. However if
you are on windows and viewing linux it rocks. It's useable down to a 56k connection
but it feels a lot like a 486 at 56k. Use a window manager like ice or fvvm for the
best results. KDE and Gnome are tooo graphicaly intesive for remote viewing.
However the apps from kde and gnome work well under ice or fvvm. If you go regular
VNC they even have a client for CE. It works as a viewer but its not the fastest
thing in the world.

You need to be running an X server on your Windows machine and no,
Win2k does not come with one.

There are some commercial X servers for Windows, but I can't really

  servers for Windows.

What you probably need is to setup VNC... I know that you can get
Windows showing up on your Linux box this way, but not sure about vice
versa (I think it will work... I remember turning on and off the

Windows machine or my Linux machine I don't recall).

FYI (and this is more for others reading as I don't think this matters
much to you in particular), I just got an X server running on
MacOS/X... now all I need is to find an ssh client for MacOS/X and I
can run xchat on it by tunneling it from my Linux box (wOOp!).

[expert] Netatalk questions

2001-12-29 Thread Fedneg

Hello:

I've been using Netatalk in my Mandrake box for a few months and now a
few questions has arisen to me.

*First: I want to access my netatalk server from outside my local
network. The problem is that I'm using the interactive Bastille Firewall
where i have enabled port 548 (afpovertcp). This let me see the server
but don't let me log-on. Of course when i shutdown Bastille-Firewall
everything works fine. Do i need to enable any other port?

*Second: And more generic one. The netatalk service uses plain text for
authentification, so is there any possibility to increase security?
Maybe SSH? I could not find anything.

Merry Christmas

 hdc: 10X8X32, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
 hdd: SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-606F, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

You should also step BOTH drives down to UDMA 33 in the bios to avoid
problems. You must always go by the lowest denominator on an IDE
 channel.

It may be that the newer kernel is far more conservative with the IDE
devices which is why it seems more stable.

I would not trust this though and fix the problem and re-install
 Linux...

Improper motherboard voltage/AGP jumpers also will cause system freezing

I've pasted at the boton information of my system extracted with dmesg.
The video card is ATI Expert98 (mach64). There is no pci sound (I use
the onboard VIA8233 AC97 with Alsa packages).
I've tried also search the log messages for any error ( as Jose

Finaly I tested the 2.2.20 kernel with ext2 and the system seems
stable
as a rock, so the problem is with 2.4.x kernels and ext3 or reiserfs.

Hello:

I've compiled new kernel 2.4.6 in my MD 8.0 frequently #2, and now
I've lost supermount with all kernels (included 2.4.5-mdk). I used
supermount -i enable
but I can't get it back.
Any help?

PS: Someone knows where can I get supermount patch for 2.4.6 kernel.

Thanks for your information.

Did you choose to enable it in the config file?

http://www.geocities.com/alexismikhailov/supermount.htmlfound by searching for it at freshmeat.netHoyt

My problem is that after instaling the kernel compided by myself (as
I downloaded it
from kernel.org, with no patch) I've lost supermount to work with precompiled
kernels also.

PS: When I apply Supermount 0.5.3-2.4.0-diff to kernel-2.4.6 I get a lot
of errors, my be
this pacth only works with 2.4.0 kernel?

Re: [expert] 3 Hard-drive problems

had since I installed Mdk8. Sorry to post them all in the same message,
but I don't know whether or not they are related. What I
did during the installation was to change (all partitions but one) to
ReiserFS. But I did no repartitioning, just changed the FS from
Ext2. 1. The harddrive is very slow, compared to before. A
rough estimate is 3-5 times slower when reading from disk. This
is also true on fairly small files, which I expected to benefit
from using ReiserFS. 2. Using hdparm on the drive has no
perceptible change whatsoever. I have fiddled with all the ususal
settings to improve my disappointing performance, but with no
effect. Doesn't hdparm work with Reiserfs? 3. The size
of one of the partitions is incorrectly estimated by df. df says
this: used:
/dev/hda6
126M 80M 46M 64% /home but du -sh
/home says this: 52M /home There seems to be about 30M missing,
and this has been th case since installing. Could
someone help me shed some light on these issues?
TIA Jesper p.s. Here follows my /etc/fstab, if
useful: /dev/hda8 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 /dev/hda5
/boot ext2 noatime 1 2 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda6 /home reiserfs defaults 1 2 /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount
fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0 /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount
fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat
user,exec,umask=0,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /proc proc
defaults 0 0 /dev/hda7 swap swap defaults 0 0
Well, this is what I've done:

Installed MD 7.2 with Reiser (with my motherboaard,
Soltek SL-75DRV, the MD 8.0
with ext2 the
XWindows simply don't start after install).
With 7.2 everything works really fine.
Upgrate to 8.0 and use old kernel.
Here you have MD 8.0, Reiser, and
UDMA.

(cdrecord do not work with old
kernels)
