Re: [expert] Multiple Distros on One Harddrive
Seve, I agree with Henrik about the root and home partitions. I also have a small /boot partition for each distro. The older version of LILO couldn't boot above the 1024th cylinder, so it was necessary for me to install LILO into a small (20Mb) /boot partition that resided below the 1024th cylinder. I had a small /boot partitions for each of my varios Linux distros. I then setup a boot manager to give me the option to boot any of the installed OSes when the PC was booting. The current versions of LILO and GRUB support booting above the 1024th cylinder, so you will no longer need to create a /boot partition that resides below the 1024th cylinder. I suggest using one of the following boot managers so that you can chose from among the various installed OSes: a) LILO - text based and FREE b) GRUB - text based and FREE c) XOSL - graphical and FREE (www.xosl.org) --it's very nice-- d) BootMagic - graphical but costs money (www.powerquest.com) Hope that helps, Matt My installed OSes include: 1) Windows NT4 w/ SP6a 2) Windows 95 OSR2 3) Caldera eDesktop 2.4 4) Linux Mandrake 7.1 5) RedHat 6.1 From: Henrik Edlund [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Multiple Distros on One Harddrive Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 01:12:14 +0200 (CEST) On Fri, 28 Jul 2000, Sevatio Octavio wrote: I would like to be able to 'try' a distro while not affecting my original. Just a thought, Matt From: Benjamin Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Helios-Exp [EMAIL PROTECTED], newbie@linux-mandrake Subject: [expert] 7.1 -- 2-CD download mystery -- How? Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 01:24:48 -0500 Dear friends: Well, as it turns out, there seems to be NO WAY to download the new Mandrake 7.1 by FTP. Since 7.1 is on two CD rather than one CD, there is a pause during the download install that has completely stumped me (and probably others). I selected Custom, Normal for download and all of the categories (except for the extra "Documentation" category) for a total of 2.2 Gig or 764 packages. Each time (once from rpmfind a few days ago and today from metalab.unc.edu), I got precisely the same results: the download pauses on the file "kpppload", with nearly exactly half of the packages still waiting to be downloaded, and suddenly moves on to the next stage of install, namely, "Installing packages," "select your time zone,", "configure your printer," etc. etc. until you get the ironic message : Mandrake 7.1 successfully installed (which it most certainly is NOT, as you find out if you try to use it). Earlier tonight, a kind list member explained this mystery to us: the first CD stops precisely here at "kpppload" and asks you to insert the second CD. Well, that's fine and dandy if you have the CD's (I am still waiting for mine from LinuxLand). But what do you do if you are trying to download and install MDK 7.1 by FTP? I tried to download a minimal version (700 megs). Same problem. I then tried to download an even more minimal version without KDE, hoping to then return and upgrade and install KDE last. Again, same problem. In fact, it refused to let me install at all without installing KDE (where it once again stopped at precisely kpppload). In desperation, I decided to download Mandrake with KDE ONLY (300 Megs) and then build on that. No dice! Once again, with 3:20 to go and many packages left, it once again stopped at kpppload and proceeded to "finish" the rest of the installation process as if nothing had happened! So, how do the rest of you do it? What' the secret formula, folks? Thank you so much. If your drive is Western Digital or your motherboard is one of several chipsets made to accommodate the WD drive and its weird timing and the fact that it blows off the CRC, then you have a problem with hardware and will be bound by it to distros who use 386 code. That is the difference--Mandrake is pushing the envelope in the direction of rather exact conformance to specifications on the part of the hardware, while compiling to maximize processor performance, and a lot of sloppy hardware has been built assuming the laxity of the 386 code which is used in the dominant desktop system. Now those same folks are saying things like "we don't support linux" when they get tech calls. The "We don't support linux," answer is easy to give, apparently a lot easier than the redesign to build the drive or motherboard right the first time. Re: [expert] Partition Table
I was under the impression that you can change a primary partition to an extended partition in order to create voluminous logical partitions within that extended partition. I use PM5, and it looks like this is what PM5 does. Is this correct? I don't claim to be an expert on partitioning, Matt From: Charles Curley [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Expert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [expert] Partition Table Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 10:34:39 -0600 Since I have inadvertently caused a bit of a flap and some consternation, let's see if I can document how partitioning works on PCs. If anyone can fill in my question marks, or correct me, please do. Any one hard drive on a PC can have up to 63 partitions on it, not all of which can hold file systems. These come in three flavors: primary, extended and logical. This is Microsoft's terminology, so don't expect it to make sense. This scheme grew up, one could say, metastasized, over the years. The culprits include Microsoft, Digital Research and others. As I have just shown, it is confusing even to those who think they know what they are doing. At most one partition with a file system on it may be marked bootable. BIOS, boot loader (e.g. lilo, System Commander) and operating system limitations may prevent a marked partition from booting, however. Primary partitions are numbered from one to four only. Each may hold one and only one file system, of any type. There must be at least one primary partition on a hard drive. Due to limitations of Mess-DOS and Windows 9x, these operating systems are often placed on the first primary partition. Extended partitions may also be numbered from one to four. (I have never seen partition one made an extended partition, and have not done any experiments on the point, so I could be wrong about that.) Extended partitions are containers for logical partitions. As such they do not contain file systems themselves. The sum of primary and extended partitions may not be greater than four. Logical partitions are contained within extended partitions. I conjecture that you can have up to 16 (64 total possible partitions divided by 4 possible extended partitions) logical partitions to an extended partition, but have never tested this. Logical partitions may not overlap with other logical partitions Similarly, extended partitions may not overlap each other, nor may primary partitions overlap each other. Primary and extended partitions may not overlap each other. A logical partition must be wholly contained within one and only one extended partition. So the way to verify a partition table is: * Identify the primary and extended partitions, one through four. Check for overlaps between them. * Identify the logical partitions, 5 through 63 inclusive. Check for overlaps between them. Check that each partition is wholly contained within its extended partition. * Check that one and only one partition is bootable. Check that the boot loader will support that partition. That done, and with the high probability of corrections to come, let's see Laurent's original partition table looks like. Disk /dev/hda: 240 heads, 63 sectors, 1299 cylinders Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 bytes Device BootStart EndBlocks Id System /dev/hda1 1 277 2094088+ 6 FAT16 /dev/hda2 278 556 21092405 Extended /dev/hda3 * 557 563 52920 83 Linux /dev/hda4 564 1268 5329800 83 Linux /dev/hda5 278 556 2109208+ 7 HPFS/NTFS hda1 Primary. No overlaps. hda2 Extended. Does not overlap with any primary or extended partitions. hda3 Primary. No overlaps. hda4 Primary. No overlaps. hda5 Logical.Contained entirely within, and fills up entirely HDA2, and does not overlap any other partitions. OK, now that I have done all that, I see the mistake I made earlier. I incorrectly identified hda3 and hda4 as extended partitions when they are in fact primary partitions. Re: [expert] Partition Table
Norm, I agree. Using PM makes the hard work obsolete. If you don't use a nice partitioning program like PM, then you will have to use Linux fdisk and apply all the rationale previously mentioned in Laurent's E-mail. By all means, use PM if you have it. I haven't seen a more wonderful program. You can even copy the necessary files from the CD on to a diskette. This will save you from installing the files onto a Windows/DOS partition on your HD...it will save you from installing Windows/DOS at all (if you want to avoid the MS OS's). Just my $.02, Matt From: Norman Carver [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Norman Carver [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Partition Table Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 14:36:14 -0500 (CDT) Laurent: Well, I don't know about others but it sure was enlightening to me. Now I have to make a decision: Fiddle with the partition tables using partition magic to try and set things straight or reinstall the whole thing. I think I'll be going with option B. My swap space is too large and there are some other issues to contend with also. Oh well, that's what this whole thing is about. At least I'm not reinstalling for a stoopid reason. I don't know what your "other issues" are, but if you have access to PM, fixing your problem will require 5min of your time. Just queue up the 4-5 actions you need done and walk away from your machine for a while. Trivial to do. Also, you don't need to devote all of the currently unused space to swap, once you expand the extended partition you can create a swap partition and another linux partition that you can mount and use for some part of your file system. Or you can even expand your fat partition instead. Unless there is something seriously wrong with your linux install, I see no point in spending vastly more time to fix a rather simple problem. Of course, it is your time to do with as you please. However, let me again say that fixing your problem with PM is extremely trivial to do. Inside the extended partition you can create 4 16mb partitions for /boot which will keep all your boot files at the front of the disk. Then you can divide up whats left into four partitions for the rest of your system (/ files which is everything but /boot) You could do a lot of other variations with partitions, one of which is to create one partition for /home but that means that your login config files will always be the same for each flavor of linux. This is good for some, but if you want to play with different window managers and other stuff like different X servers (accelerated X), then do not try to keep a common /home partition. Also what are the models of each of the disks that you have. Both ide? Tom Kirk McElhearn wrote: I am getting a new 20 gig HD this week, to add to my 4.3 gig HD. Can I , say, have five 4 gig partitions, and put a different Linux on each one? If so, is there any special things to know when installing? I would ideally not want to use Lilo, but use a boot floppy for each different distribution. Will this work? Just so newbies don't get overly paranoid about internal modem... I use a 3COM/USR 56K Courier V.Everything internal modem. The modem uses jumpers to override the PnP features. After checking the hpt366 setup, I made a stab at installing mandrake 7.0 on it. During the install, man70 says that the udma66 is not completely compatible with linux and would I like to make a boot floppy to install with it. I did that, rebooted with the new install floppy but it was a no joy - system locked during install. The stock 7.0 install would not recognize the presence of the new drive either. Then I booted to the 2.3.51 smp kernel that I have working and it recognized the drive and allowed me to partition and format it. When I attempted to run hdparm on the drive I got the following error: with the -i option I got a dump of the drive data followed by this message: could not allocate sharedmem buf: invalid argument with the -tT options I got the same error message twice. It is to this issue I want to comment. The reason this list is so very successful is simple: Respect. Most of the old Linux heads.like Civileme and Ramon and Chamouel have been at this for a number of years. They have real jobs and a real life. They have nothing to prove and do not need, or have, to respond to questions they've answered fifty times previously, yet they do and graciously every day since I've been on the list. You say you are frustrated: Answers don't come fast enough; bugs aren't fixed instantly; Java causes Netscape to crash; the install doesn't go well and devices don't work. I wish I had your problems. I'm a newbie too and I am just as determined to escape winblows as anyone else on this list, but my problem is just a little different. An illness left me with a memory loss that is less than enviable. So while some of you are unhappy with the answers you get I'm delighted when I can remember what linuxconf does. When I am actually able to get into root and perform a simple function I am so happy I want to tell the world. Respect is the reason I've gotten this far. The folks who have helped me were just as considerate to me as they have been to you. They took the time to write careful explanations that I could grasp and put into action; and for that I will always be greatful. I urge all of us to temper our frustrations with kindness to each other, for if we do not we will have just one more list that no one can learn from and the old heads will not come to our rescue. You may not need me but I need you. Linux is not easy to learn under optimum condtions without a strong computing background. Let's be patient with our shortcomings and with each other. To those who disagree I ask you to flame me privately. Mandrake rocks and so does this list. I'm willing to work to keep it this way. Please join me. Pj [EMAIL PROTECTED] PJ, Right On You GO girl!!! What I'd like are the other freeware apps Precompiled for Mandrake in the -march=pentium manner. SuSE's releases do something similar in their base distrib as Mandrake does in it's powerpack. They have 3 CD's that contain the base distrib freeware apps (so it's like 1 base CD and 2 app CD's, 'cept that they are all mixed together into 3). Then they have a 4th CD that has "pay-ware" stuff on it -- demo versions of various products that you need to pay to get fully-operating versions, then a CD with documentation, and a 6th CD with source. All for about $60 Retail -- including a big fat manual that I think I looked at once while the install was running cuz I was bored. (I have more than one system counting work systems). So what I'm looking for are those "2-CD's worth" of extra apps/freeware. I also recently installed Corel in a VMware machine -- they really have a tiny/toy distrib. Re: [expert] install freeze problem
Just a thought...you could try the following procedure that I used for my Promise Ultra66 card. The following procedure may allow MDK to see your PCI fasttrak device and allow the installatiion to proceed. I can't make any guarantees. I'm using MDK 7.0-2 and a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller card. If you want to do a fresh install of Linux onto a drive that's connected to a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller card, follow these steps: 1) Use a Linux boot disk to boot your system (if you don't have one yet, you can get one from http://www.toms.net/rb/) 2) At the Linux console prompt, type "cat /proc/pci" without the quotes. 3) This will spit out five I/O numbers for you (the ones that are not in brackets) 4) Label those I/O numbers a, b, c, d, e (the first is "a"; the second is "b"; etc.) 5) Now, restart your system and boot from the Linux installation CD 6) At the boot prompt, type "linux ide2=a,b+2 ide3=c,d+2" without the quotes. Be sure to substitute the actual I/O numbers for the "letters" shown above. The above worked for Linux Mandrake 7.0-2 (and 6.1). (and win2k) an adaptec 2940 with a seagate barracuda 50 (scsi) that i want to put linux on. however, when i boot from the mandrake iso cd (7.0-2) it freezes at the very beginning of the boot process after displaying a bit of info on "ide0" (which is the fasttrak66, which i know isnt supported in linux), now i dont need to access this from linux so i would just assume i could skip this detection and be ok. i tried using the boot paramter ide0=noprobe like this from the boot: prompt linux ide0=noprobe but it didnt do anything.. any help would be appreciated thanks. scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Basically, I have a fresh install of Linux on my box, got it all networked up. I can successfully display single windows, such as running xterm or kfm on my Windows machine (using a different X Window system on my Win machine - namely MI/X) but I cannot figure how to run KDE itself. Any luck? I am looking for what options to set in X-Win32 and what to type in Linux. Thanks Matt __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

[snip] ATAPI drives use the SCSI interface for access. Don't remove the IDE-SCSI translation. cdrecord can only write to the SCSI interface. Are your sound problems limited to Netscape? Are you able to play and ordinary wav file? Are you able to play a midi file? Re: [expert] Sound Blaster 64 AWE Problems
Just a thought... Possibly your /etc/isapnp.conf file is corrupt. You could rename your /etc/isapnp.conf file to /etc/isapnp.conf-backup. You could then reboot your PC (Linux shouldn't detect your PNP soundcard). You could then run sndconfig again. The sndconfig proggie will rebuild your /etc/isapnp.conf file. As the modules are loaded as it boots the card starts to buzz and does not stop. The only way to get it to stop is to edit anything having to do with sound out of /etc/conf.modules and reboot. After rebooting, I run sndconfig and the buzzing appears again as soon as the card is initalized. The card seems to be using the correct parameters according to the info panel in KDE (i.e. irq 5, dma low 1, dma high 5, mem at 220 and midi at 330.) Any Ideas? [expert] Hard drive optimisation for only 1 of my 2 HD's?
Hi everyone, I went to the List Archives, but keep getting the message that it is temporarily offline... I just installed Mandrake 7.0-2 yesterday...I was using 6.1 until then. (BTW - The graphical installer is the best I've seen yet...I've installed RH6.1, COL2.3, SuSE6.3, MDK7.0-2) While installing Mdk7, I told it to enable the "Hard drive optimisation." I have two hard drives connected to my PCI Promise Ultra66 IDE controller card. How do I enable the optimisations for only one hard drive (/dev/hde)? I believe I need to edit rc.sysinit, but I'm not sure what modifications need made. Thanks everyone, Matt Additional Info: /dev/hde = Quantum 18 GB hard drive (works great with optimisation) /dev/hdg = Western Digital 1.5 GB drive (very flaky - I need to disable optimisation for this drive because Linux can't even access the drive with the optimisations enabled) __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I had the same problem when I tried to apply a patch to the Mandrake 2.2.13pre?? kernel source. Mandrake ships a non-standard kernel source with their distribution, but the patches are expecting the standard kernel source that can be found on ftp.kernel.org To solve the problem, I: 1) broke the symbolic link "/usr/src/linux" 2) downloaded and installed the latest kernel source from ftp.kernel.org to a directory called "/usr/src/linux-2.2.??" 3) created a symbolic link "/usr/src/linux" that points to "/usr/src/linux-2.2.??"
