Re: [expert] TV Cards under Mandrake...

I have an AIW Radeon that I have never bothered to try
TV with on Mandrake 9.0. Any tips on how you got this
working for us other users? Perhaps you could post
your procedure here. Thanks.

RE: [expert] need help to configure X

2002-10-31 Thread Mike Morrell
Looks like the 1280x1024 mode is too high for your
monitor to handle. Try changing to lower res mode to
see if that helps (CTRL,ALT,-). Also, you are running
at 24bit color depth. Try 16bit to see if that helps.

(BTW thanks to others who have replied, too. I need

My most recent attempt was to re-run X Config from
 install, using the
detected SiS card but selecting XFree-3. This gives
 a screen that is now
very close to being usable. That is, I can click on
 everything, but the
display only takes up 2/3 of the screen, then the
 right 1/3 is a frizzy
repeat of part of the main display. Also, I get
 artifacts (mostly across
the top) and highlighted areas sometimes get
 blacked-out. It's hard to
describe; the point is it's not really usable,
 although I can at least
navigate my way through most of it. The first-time
 wizard was not usable,
however. (BTW, will I be able to run that later?)

Still can't figure out how to configure the card as
 vesa, as you suggested
yesterday, unless I do it as XFree-4 X server. I
can try that if you think
it might yield some clues. That will produce a log
 file with errors.

With the configuration above (detected SiS card and
 XFree-3), I don't get
any log file, presumably because X doesn't think
 there's anything wrong. I
am listing the XF86Config-4 and XF86Config files
 below. Please let me know
what you think, and if you can remember how to
 configure as generic vesa.
I'll be happy to keep trying different things as
 long as someone keeps
 responding. :-)

Also, I couldn't figure out where to turn off X, so
 that it will boot into
console mode instead of automatically starting X.
Is there an easy way to
 toggle that without re-running xconfig?

 Thanks again,
 Tim

Tim,

Try this to post your XF86config-4 file and xfree log
file.

1. put dos formated floppy in drive. I think that
supermount should mount it automatically. If not
manually mount it with mount -t vfat /dev/fd0
/mnt/floppy
2. cp /etc/X11/XF86config-4 /mnt/floppy
3. cd /var/log
4. ls
look for a file that starts with xfree or something
like that. not sure of file name for log file but
something close to this I think...
5. cp xfree /mnt/floppy
6. unmount floppy if needed.

Post those two files here.

 available under XFree-4.
I tried it anyway, and got the following errors:

I also tried choosing XFree-3 server SVGA, and got
 the error
  Config error /etc/X11/F86COnfig.test:10

I also booted into console mode and ran xf86config.
 I think I entered the
right numbers, but couldn't figure out how to get
 XFree-3 to run. Startx
seems to run XFree-4, and I get the same errors (no
 core pointer, etc.) as
when I tried to configure at install time.

Can anyone 'splain to me how to configure X to let
 me use the card
generically? This is frustrating, since I really
only need the same kind of
resolution that the install program has. Everything
 looks hunky-dory until
I configure X. How do I get X to use the same video
 mode as the
 installation program?

I found a framebuffer HOWTO that seems to list my
 card as VESA 2.0
compliant, but I don't understand how to use the
 info in the document to
make a xconfig file, or to pick the right arguments
 for startx.

I find that the VESA driver usually works on XFree4.x
on the unsupported cards. No acceleration though and
not sure if you can go bigger than 1024x768. You can
change your default boot OS by editing the
/etc/lilo.conf file. Change the line with
default=linux to default=windows or whatever the label
is for that partition. See the man page for lilo.conf.
Also, make sure you run lilo from the command prompt
after you edit the file to update the boot sector.
Hope this helps.

RE: [expert] Display messed up after install

2002-10-29 Thread Mike Morrell
I agree that XFree is still not as bullet proof as it
should be. This is probably mostly due to the lack of
card/chipset data from the video card makers as well
as just the pure difficulty in writing drivers. There
are lots of cards that are working well and I would
suggest to anyone that wants to try Linux that they
check into hardware support and stick with the most
popular mainstream hardware because that gets the most
attention from developers and testers. I know this
does not help you. Sorry. If you still need help and
you can manage a command line, I suggest that you post
your xfree log file here. Maybe we can give you some
hints.

As far as X is concerned, right now it's pretty much
 a disaster. I tried
all sorts of configurations, and I either get a test
 screen that doesn't
work, or I get an error message about no keyboard
 configured, or other
confusing error, and a suggestion that I should try
 to change some
 parameters.

Any attempt to select XFree3 resulted in suggestion
 to try some other
parameters. Same thing with attempt to select
 XFree4 with VESA. Just about
the only config that actually resulted in a test
screen was the one with my
 actual SiS card (as auto-detected)

 [emotional outburst on]
Apparently Xfree is still not ready for prime-time,
 which is a little
discouraging to me. This really isn't any easier
than it was 9 years ago.
From the mailing list and other linux-centric web
 sites that I've been
reading, I can tell that a lot of other people are
at least able to get the
desktop up and running. I really expected to get
 past this point before I
 started running into trouble. :-(
 [emotional outburst off]

Not sure where to turn at this point. I seem to
have a combination of bad X
support for my video card, and Mandrake
 X-configuration bugs. Probably I'll
have to wait until broadband becomes available in my
 area and try redhat or
else the next rev of mandrake. Maybe after a nap
 things will seem different
 and I'll try something else.
