Re: [expert] Cant boot fm HDD

2001-08-29 Thread Bruce E.Harris

I got it fixed, and now have boot win95 and MK 7.2 on my laptop and bootable
fm the HDD. I have to use Ontrack and delete it, but that was not very clear
how to or what to delete. Under the advanced options, I found remove Dyanmic
Overlay. Then I formated the HDD, installed win95 then MK. Work great now.

Thanks for the pointers.

there is one way to zap out anything on mbr or before
it:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdx count=10

usually, when a disk partition is corrupted or the MBR
is messed up, you clear up the first sectors of the
disk. its gonna be like a newly unformatted disk right
after doing that command. it also efficiently deletes
SystemPartitions (about 10 MB) created by Compaq,
Dell, etc.

Re: [expert] Cant boot fm HDD

2001-08-26 Thread Bruce E. Harris

Well that explains a lot. This is what happened. I got a new IBM 10GB ide
drive for my laptop and Ontrack was included. I tried to install Solaris 8.0
and that was a complete bust. I was able to load win95 on it once, booting fm
the hdd, then wiped out win95 while installing MK 7.2. In th end I had MK 7.2
booting fm the hdd, and one empty 3gb partition that I could not load win95
on no matter what. Then ran ontrack again loaded MK 7.2 on the whole thing.
With every attempt Disk Drake would warn me it could not see the partition,
and do I want to continue. Well I did using Reister FS and got kernel panics
and wouldnt boot. Somehow I got MK reloaded using ext2 file system but cant
boot fm the hdd now--but it boots, and I have no wasted hdd space. This beast
takes hours to load, and I really dread another attempt. Probably just going
to live with the floppy boot--might tackle this later.

Thanks for the help.

fdisk will not do a clean format in this situation.
The Ontrack software operates on the same principle as EZ-Drive
and creates a "special" protected sector on the hd prior to the MBR
and no amount of formatting will remove it.
The only manner in which it may be removed is by uninstalling it.

You can then fdisk /MBR and format the hd with the utility of your
choice including the Mandrake installation.

Bruce,

Were you ever able to ever get a clean, pristine, and formated harddive
with fdisk? By this, I mean no kind of data, includine no boot records
(MBR), on your harddive. Could you ever get to this state of affairs
using fdisk? And, if you did, why could you not then install Mandrake?
How far into the installation process did you get, and what was the
actual error you received from Mandrake. You could live with a floppy
or, if you want, you might be able to learn how to correct this
situation. The problem with hardware software, such as Ontrack, is that
it can become corrupted, and your entire harddrive's content gets
dooshed.

Just some thoughts shared,

I have reinstalled MK 7.2 at least 8 times, because disk drake could not see
my partitons, On track was the only way I could figure out to get access to
the disk. I did tr fdisk too.

Guess I will live with booting fm a floppy.

This has to do with what "Ontrack" software has done to your harddive,
and is not a Linux problem per se. I do not use Ontrack but have seen
many kinds of this disk formating/partitioning software that gets
installed with a new harddive. I think the only way around your problem
would be in un-install the Ontrack software, manually take care of disk
formating and partitioning by using Mandrake tools. If you are dual
booting, there is always the old dos standby for this kind of thing,
fdisk. Yes, you are right if you are thinking that this means a
re-install for Mandrakeski.

[expert] Cant boot fm HDD

2001-08-26 Thread Bruce E.Harris

I have MK 7.2 install on my IBM Thinkpad 385XD (I gave up on MK8 for it since
I could never get the eraser head mouse to work). I upgraded the HDD to a
10GB one and had a devil of a time installing. Something went wrong and after
reboot I would get a kernel panic and lockup. After many reinstalls I tried
OnTrack Disk Manager and was able to install MK 7.2 and it works great. But I
have to boot fm floppy, if I try a HDD boot I get this error:

"Error 1 loading OS. This may be due to a virus.
1. Shutdown.
2. Boot from floppy
3. Run ONTRACK Disk Manager
4. Select "Upgrade" option from Main Menu"

I am afraid if I do that I will loss MK and have to reload, yet again. I
checked /etc/lilo.conf, and it looks ok. I ran lilo, but this error persists.
Any suggestions?

TIA

Bruce
