[expert] KDE3+8.1=mess

2002-04-07 Thread Pierre Lagier

Hi,

Until recently I was an happy user running LM8.1 and KDE2 for a while on my
dual AMD Linux box. Yesterday I just tried to install KDE3 official and my
story starts here:

1. no problem to install everything from the official rpms, so far so good
2. first try to launch KDE3:
   - ksplach crashes
   - no more sounds
   - all menus empty - hey, sounds familiar...
   - about half of my desktop configured icons are corrupted
   - kcontrol does not work anymore
3. after a logout and trying to switch back to KDE2:
   - first login within KDE2, kdm crashes
   - second login is OK but some data files are corrupted - I am a quite
an experienced fox so I had a backup of my .kde and Desktop !
   - third login is OK, back to normal.
Good to see my stuff is still OK with KDE2 :-P
4. after running update-menus and trying again
   - still my splash screen crashes beautifully :-))
   - still no sounds :-(
   - menus are OK now
   - kcontrol is back
   - but... big mess with the fonts and the language set up - guess what...
I am french and so I like these little tiny symbols we put on top of e

Finally, after a couple of hours trying to build something usable I gave up.
I will stay with my good KDE2 on top of 8.1, I don't feel things are stable
enougth to invest in 8.2 and KDE3 - well, yes I wrote *invest* as I use Linux
in my office, just fair for my company to buy it isn't ?

Any clues about anything I missed or did wrong ???

Pierre.

Well, you could've tried to chuck out your .kde file in your home directory
before starting kde3 or if you're not too sure about that: create a new user
and start from there to take a look. If that works all
right.you've got a cleaning job to do :-)
You're not doing bad though, at the time upgrading from kde1 to kde2 left me
with a totally unusable Mandrake install.

2002-04-07 Thread Joseph Braddock

8.2 seems to be much more stable for me than 8.1 was (although 8.1 wasn't that bad
other than some devfs problems I had). As for KDE3.0, I used the texstar rpms and
they seem to work without problems (well, at least none that I found :) ) I should
add that I'm only running KDE 3.0 on my test machine (I run 8.2 on both my regular and
my test machine).

For everyone trying to get KDE 3.0 to work, I really question Why? Almost all of my
KDE apps are KDE2 specific and still use the KDE2 libs. So while it adds some nice
eye-candy, I'm not sure of the main benefit to using it on a normal production system
unless you are planning on testing and submitting bug reports to kde.org.

I think Mandrake made the right choice with sticking with a stable KDE2.2 in their 8.2
release, instead of trying to force fit a good, but not necessarily stable KDE3.0 in
the release. Almost always, .0 releases of anything tend to have more bugs.

Joe
