Any interesting output when you run "gmplayer" from an xterm?

I have added a PLF source to my urpmi, and use primarily their RPMs:

mplayer-fonts-1.0-7mdk
mplayer-gui-0.90-10plf
mplayer-skins-1.3-3mdk
mplayer-0.90-10plf
mencoder-0.90-10plf
win32-codecs-1.4-1plf

I run KDE 3.05a on 9.0 with these RPMs, and mplayer (including the gui)
works fine here, FWIW. I particularly like the CornerMP skin ... :)

To add PLF to urpmi, see the http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon page.

I am still able to control mplayer functions from the cli, but the gui
is broken. For some reason, the gui "controller" will only display on my
#3 desktop, and even then only displays a part of itself . In other
words I only see about half of it. This happens with all of the skins I
have, and if I try to move the controller it becomes completely garbled.
I do not know where to look for the cure to this.

I ripped out the rpms using the gui software removal tool and went
through and deleted any thing else it left behind related to mplayer. I
downloaded the source from the mplayer site and compiled it and
installed it. Same behavior. The video window itself displays on
whichever desktop I'm using, and the videos seem to play fine. I can do
without the gui, but it was sure nice while it was working.

I'm running 9.0 KDE 3.01 and the latest nvidia drivers from nVidia's site

Thanks for your response.

I'll have to give it a try. Is it just a matter of putting in the correct
mime type (video/quicktime is handled by mplayer)? Or is there a "plugin"
needed?

Quicktime (*mov) seems to work OK. I pulled down a *mov file and it ran
fine with mplayer. At least I think it was a quicktime video. (FWIW -
*wmv worked fine in Mplayer, but not in xine (cooker).

Any idea as to where to look for the problem?

Cory,

Contribs are rpms that aren't officially in the distro and are
semi-supported by MDK in that they are actually packaged by the
community not by MDK's people. (Rough explanation... sorry for any
inaccuracy.) A good place to find info on mirrors and get the
instructions you'll need for adding them to urpmi is

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php (Yep plf to the rescue!)

just click in the box on the left choose your mirror and at the bottom
it will spit out the string you need to enter to make urpmi aware of
it. Contribs btw is the second one from the top.

It appears you need to add a 9.0 contrib/ source.

It's a directory on the Mandrake mirrors full of rpms. It is for
downloaders a source of software that is included in the commercial
pack. Not sure if there is a one-to-one correspondence but it is
software in addition to what is available on the 'gpl download edition'.
Some non-gpl stuff and some stuff excluded for space considerations.
This is stated at the plf site that you need to add the contrib source.
I used the same syntax as the plf urpmiefier gave for the plf source
but changed the name from plf to contrib, gave a url for the
contrib/RPMS directory, and gave 'with synthesis.hdlist2.cz' for the
hdlist location. You will see this file is included in the RPMS
directory. Funny thing, addmedia failed the first time but completed
the second try. I think it has to do with busy mirror or borderline
problems negotiating a login.

libdv.so.1 is not on my system.

The other 2 are, and are covered by:

libdv2-0.98-1mdk

Re: [expert] mplayer and software manager + a bit of a rant

2002-12-16 Thread David Robertson
I must sound like a broken record here but this is really getting me
down. I got fed up with all the difficulties installing software, being
unable to run mozilla as a user, my menus suddenly disappearing, that I
reinstalled LM 9.0 (again!)

This time, I didn't update during installation. Again, I added extra
software sources from the club's mirror lists, for contribs, club
contribs, commercial apps and PLF. These sources seemed to install OK in
urpmi and updating them doesn't give any errors.

So, I go to install some stuff - some programs, no problem. Some
programs (including mplayer again), I get the "everything already
installed" error. So I run "urpmi.update cdrom8" as suggested on the
errata page and that solves it sometimes, but not others. "urpmi.update
-a" doesn't help either, nor does "rpm --updatedb" I've managed to
install some stuff, but not others. I'm doing this on two computers and
the software I can get varies between the two. MPlayer won't install on
my laptop but will on my desktop. If I try to do it from a terminal, it
tells me that various files aren't available - but they are, 'cos I've
just downloaded them on my other computer from exactly the same sources.

I used to use Mandrake because it seemed easier than the other distros
and I then defected to debian because it was the only distro I was
capable of customising enough for a particular machine, which I no
longer have. I thought with 9.0 I'd give it another go but I'm about to
give up again: not because of particular issues or bugs but because it
just seems totally unpredictable. When I boot up tomorrow, what will be
Tuesday's error? And Monday's problems will probably have gone away.

I think I'll go to bed now because I'm getting really pd off!

Thanks to everyone who's tried to help - any further suggestions would
be appreciated.

Rant over and good night!

David

I've deleted the offending entry in /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg which seems to have solved

When a source is properly configured, there are three files per source.
If the souce is called "Main", then there will be:
  hdlist.Main.cz
  list.Main
  synthesis.hdlist.Main.cz

Willing to bet that you did the update process during the install, but
it didn't succeed all the way.

1) Look in /etc/urpmi/urpmi.conf. Is there a defined source for "Update
for Mandrake Linux 9.0 (ftp1u)"?
2) If yes, urpmi.update -a should have fixed it.
3) Since you said it didn't, most likely that source is not defined in

(ftpiu)' into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Updates for
Mandrake Linux 9.0 (ftpiu)]exists."

If the previous two points aren't it, I would look in sources management
of software manager whether these sources exist. I get such an error
for hd installs, recently, and have to add the sources manually. My
next suggestion would be to delete and re-add the broken sources.

This is a reinstall of LM 9.0 and I didn't have these problems before -
I can't think that I've done anything different, so any suggestions
would be gratefully received!

Thanks

David

[expert] mplayer in VESA mode ...

2002-11-30 Thread XI
Hi,
I have a mandrake9.0 and I use mplayer.
There is a bug when I use mplayer in vesa mode (this is for reading
movies without X, in text mode only): mplayer always segfault when I try
to use it in vesa mode (and it works with other modes)

The problem is easily reproductible, if you have a mdk9 and any vesion
of mplayer-0.9, just go in text mode only, and type mplayer -vo vesa

It segfaults on all mdk9 based systems I have tried.

I have done some investigations, and I found this:
~ It works with a mdk8.1 (and mdk8.2)
~ It's not compiler fault, I have tried rpm version of mplayer: it works
with mdk8.1 but not with mdk9
~ It's not kernel bug, I have tried kernel-2.4.8 from mdk8.1, I got the
same problem
~ It seems to be a glibc bug: I have tried glibc-2.2.4 from mdk8.1, and
it works!
~ The segfault occurs in file linux/lrmi.c of mplayer (assembler code
that I don't understand):
> #ifdef __PIC__
> asm volatile (
> "pushl %%ebx\n\t"
> "movl %2, %%ebx\n\t"
> "int $0x80\n\t"
> "popl %%ebx"
> : "=a" (r)
>  : "0" (113), "r" (vm));
> #else
> asm volatile (
> "int $0x80"
> : "=a" (r)
>  : "0" (113), "b" (vm));
> #endif

What I would like: I have tried to upgrade my glibc to the glibc-3.2.1,
but I can't get it working. So could someone with a glibc > 2.2.5 try
mplayer and tell me if there is still this bug?

Remarks, comments, ... are welcomed

Thanks,
			Xavier

Just for kicks, go ahead and install on Mandrake. The mplayer
developers are VERY childish about having to accept that they believe
gcc 2.96 is bad. On one install, I actually had to type something like
"gcc 2.96 is no good" or something to that effect; before it would let
me compile the program! Needless to say, it works just fine with gcc
2.96.

Re: [expert] MPlayer

Yes, because you are linking GPL to non-GPL code, which you *may* do for your
own use, becasue the GPL only comes into effect. However, distributing the
binary indicates you agree to the terms of the GPL, including the prohibition
against linking non-free code to GPL code. (at least that's my
understanding, take it with a *large* grain of salt) Anyway, this isn't a
Debian list, so I'll stop ranting about licenses now ;-)

License issues aside, the whole thing is optimized to a specific CPU at
compile time, so a binary version compiled on a Pentium III will choke and
die on an Athlon system, and vice versa.

Theo Brinkman wrote:
> Let me get this straight.

Theo,

Good luck! These things are very difficult to get straight. I
subscribe to at least one mailing list that discusses these type of
issues. AFAICT, there are licenses (and combinations of licensed
packages) that allow you to build binaries for yourself but not for
distribution. (And one variation is a package that includes original
(source?) code and a series of patches -- you (as a user) can apply the
patches, but the software cannot be distributed with the patches
applied.)

Aside: The maillist I subscribe to is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Its primary purpose is for discussion of licenses that have been
submitted for approval as OSI certified licenses. By lurking on the
list, I've learned quite a few things (I think). (What I'm trying to
say is that questions on some of the things I mention in the first
paragraph might be considered partially off-topic if the discussion is
not focused on a license submitted for approval -- they have suggested
other maillists for those type discussions, but I don't recall what they
were.)

Hope this helps,
Randy Kramer

Let me get this straight.

1) The mplayer developers are developing software which uses various
libraries with incompatible licenses.
2) They claim the files are allowed to exist in the same project in
*source* form.
3) They also claim that distributing (or even *building*) the project
results in you violating some of those licenses.
4) They tell you to go ahead and download it and build it.
5) They apparently don't think their project violates any of those
licenses even though (by their own admission) they must have violated
these licenses hundreds of times during the development cycle.

I hate to be a spoilsport, but according to the mplayer website, distributing
binary packages of mplayer is illegal due to some sort of license
incompatibility in the libraries. It's also highly optimized for
cpu-specific MMX/SSE/3Dnow instructions, so it's probably better to compile
yourself anyway. Look at the bottom half of

gcc-2.96 is said to not compile correctly mmx code! do u need more evidence?

plz! have a look at this:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/gcc-2.96-3.0.html
and this:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/users_against_developers.html
and this again:
http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-2.96.html

and u'll know what is gcc-2.96! so don't complain anymore about it.

bye
jipe

PS: egcs is avaible on mandrake CDs. use it instead of gcc-2.96.. or dld a
2.95 release from ftp://ftp.gnu.org

You could either try installing gcc 3.0.2 from Mandrake Cooker or disabling
the part that is giving you problems to compile. In my case I had to say
'--disable-dshow' (NO DirectShow) and I got it to compile.

After some compiling problems I could install finally the CVS version. I do
not know if I would have made it with version MPlayer 0.50 + gcc 3.02.

Good luck.

i use mplayer compiled from cvs. last update yesterday
on this version --enable-gui is the right option.
maybe on other versions it can be different... just edit configure to know
that or type first ./configure --help

[expert] mplayer error

2001-11-25 Thread skidley

I am trying to compile mplayer on mdk 8.1, I'm using gcc-3.0-3.0.2-1mdk
from the cooker. I get this error when compiling:

I wonder has anyone else had similar errors and how to fix it. Do I need
another package or something?

to have gui installed, run configure in this way:
./configure --enable-gui

to install skins:
cd ~/.mplayer
mkdir Skin if it doesn't exist
cd Skin
tar xvfz .tar.gz

u can too unzip fonts in font directory

to run mplayer with gui type gmplayer or mplayer -gui
the skin will be "default"
to run with another skin just add: -skin "name of the skin"
u can too edit ~/.mplayer/config and specify your prefered skin

don't forget to install divx4linux from projectmayo. it allowes u to use the
-vc odivx or -vc divx4 options

last i compile it from cvs with gcc-2.95.3 and it runs fine.

I finally got it working (with no GUI yet).

I installed gcc3.0-3.02 RPMs series from Mandrake Cooker. I also had to
disable DirectShow when compiling MPlayer:

./configure --disable-dshow

And now I can play AVIs on my linux box.

Thanks.
