The best way to test this is usu to look at the archive:

http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/

That way, you can tell w/o waiting for a response or getting it
yourself.

If only they'd fix rDNS for the one at 80.67.180.176, I'd be happier and
they would stop getting bounce messages from my server.

Dunno either

1. The Gods of the Verisign blackhole grabbed it.
2. Some router is freaking over the size of your sig.
3. It's your turn.
4. The are just getting the kinks worked out of the new servers.

4 is the most likely answer. The first 3 are there to hopefully get a
smile.

I had a couple on Monday that I would have expected to be caught, but
POPFilter continues to perform outstandingly well. Those sms ones
were still getting past kmail's pop filters up to the weekend, but
they seem to have stopped. That's about all, really

Ya, I received my "testing" message very quickly. Other posts either do not

Basically as follows:

1) Get/compile/install the latest module-init-tools, modutils and devfsd from
cooker.

2) Get 2.6.0-test1 from kernel.org

3) Compile said kernel (make menu|xconfig && make && make modules_install &&
make install) and fix the /boot symlinks so you can boot your old kernel if
you need to. I _didnt_ create an initrd (I compiled that out) cos you need a
new mkinitrd too for that.

4) Look at /etc/modprobe.conf and change any modules for their new names if
needed.

5) Reboot.

You may get some strangeness about modules, yet still have some loaded after
boot. This is (I think) down to the initscripts still looking at modules.conf
and getting confused by things (notably the usb drivers have changed)

Well, I was trying to answer the call for testing, but how can you test it if
it won't compile? As for fixing it, that is unfortunately beyond me from a
technical perspective, not that I wouldn't be willing to do it.

I suppose I could continue to confirm the problems and report bugs, or at
least scan the kernel ML to see if it is being addressed or has been fixed.

Re: [expert] Testing Kernel 2.6

2003-07-22 Thread Thierry Terrier
 Hi to all,
I'm coming to you with some news.
First I had to do a make modules_install to have /lib/module/2.6.0
present ...
but no modules won't be loaded as I said.
An initrd usage not help me.
I tried the updates of initrd, module... following
http://supermount-ng.sourceforge.net/mdk-25/
but a lot of dependencies broken stopped me (I'm on mdk9.0).

Next:
I had compiled kernel without modules support, with in line drivers for
video, keyboard, lan, chipset i810 (a minimal config)
It seems to have a problem with virtual console (mingettty ?). Keyboard
nunlock is operational.
I can have a kernel 2.6.0-test1 operational (without screen !!! on 3
lines with kernel loading displayed)
but all is ok from ssh / samba and seems to be working smooth.

Of course I haven't read all great FMs. ;-)

This nice preemptive kernel seems to be harder to get full operational ;-)
I'm impatient to play with nice priorities ...
Thanks to all
Have a nice day.
PS: I'm joining messages et tasks list
Yes, a lot has changed. You no longer need to do all of the make
arguments.
1) 'make config|menuconfig|xconfig|oldconfig' all still work the same.
2) 'make dep' and 'make clean' are no longer required, but you can use
'make clean' if you like.
3) 'make' will compile both the kernel and modules for you. If you
happen to have removed something (in menuconfig for example), you do
not have to run 'make dep' or 'make clean' or 'make distclean' or 'make
mrproper' at any point. Just running 'make' is enough.
4) 'make xconfig' is now using qt instead of the old way. It's really
nice.
5) 'make install' still does things the same way.
In short, the Makefiles and related scripts have undergone some major
rewrites. It works quite well now that the bugs seem to have been
squashed for the most part.

This is because a lot of the modules just flat don't compile because
they have bugs. Not much you can do unless you feel like fixing it
yourself. Linus always accepts patches ;-D

>else won't go. I also like the new interface a lot better. What are they
>going to do on a RedHat box that doesn't have libqt installed though? :-D

Chances are libqt is installed. The tricky point is the little hack
that makes it use libqt or libqt-mt (multithreaded). libqt-mt is what
Mandrake uses. I happened to catch that the first day it got released
by Roman and sent a fix in, but he didn't like it. He did it a
different way and it turns out that his way is much cleaner, so I'm
content with having notified him that some systems use a slightly
different appearance for qt.

>I'll keep working on it, but I really appreciate your clarification. I was

It's kind of a trust thing. You know they say that it's not necessary
any more. But your brain wants to do it the old way because the brain
knows that it used to work.

Hi Todd, good to see you around.

I have been playing around and I cannot get the modules to compile. The
kernel image goes fine, but the modules keep crapping out at some point.
Each time I go back into the config and fix, get past that spot and something
else won't go. I also like the new interface a lot better. What are they
going to do on a RedHat box that doesn't have libqt installed though? :-D

I'll keep working on it, but I really appreciate your clarification. I was
still doing some of those steps, and they are not necessary.

NFS and HD installs proved to be so easy I don't burn CD's any more. If
I ever keep a distro installed more than a month maybe I'll burn a #1 CD
for rescue purposes, but a rescue floppy seems adequate that even that
shouldn't be necessary.

Basically, either NFS or HD install you mount the #1 iso in order to
make a boot floppy from hd.img or network.img. Instructions to make the
floppy are in the readme in the iso / and /images (the directory with
the floppy boot images). Once you make it, boot from it. Most questions
are easy to answer, and if you can't supply the correct answer, reboot
to the old system, fix the problem, then boot the floppy again. It
shouldn't take more than 3-4 tries the first time. My first took me two.

Hi list,

I have, at home, a old PII 300, mobo from zida (Tomato), with 2
USBs that I've never tested. Now I got a USB mouse and when I connect it
I got that from 'dmesg':

usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.259 $ time 17:30:17 Sep 23 2001
usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled

I've even got my Voodoo TVout worked! TV card too. Full divx videos and
so on. Now only USB is missing to make system complete (at least by now
:). Perhaps I must say that in Winblows 2k it didn't worked either, but,
actually, I don't care about winblows.

Many thanks in advance for any help or suggestion.

I see you're running postfix... you might get a clue by checking your
logs for delivery failure (to you) and/or adding "policy" to the default
notify_classes:
# Notifying postmaster
notify_classes =
resource
software
policy
This will send a message to your postmaster account (make sure it's
aliased) for each failure... helps debug the problems... I also use it
to see if my rules are too tight...

Since your messages are being replied to, it would imply that you are not
getting what the others on the list get... I had this problem previously
and kept complaining to Mandrake about their DNS setup. I finally "fixed"
the problem by creating a file (/etc/postfix/my_remotes.hash):
mandrakeclub.com OK
mandrakeforum.com OK
mandrakesoft.com OK
mandrake.org OK

and adding this to /etc/postfix/main.cf in "smtpd_sender_restrictions":
hash:/etc/postfix/my_remotes.hash

Don't forget run "postmap" on any new hash files and "postfix reload".

This is NOT the proper fix; but it gets around the problem for now... if
I start seeing spam sneaking though this "hole", it'll get shutdown in a
NY minute...

Depending on your rules, you may have to find the best location in the
list... In case it helps, my configs are at
http://pfortin.com/Linux/PostFix (see bottom of that page)...

HTH,
Pierre

I have been noticing that some messages don't make it from either my
home address, or my work address. It's indescriminate as to where I send
it from. Thus confirming my suspision that the problem is originating on
the Mandrake side.

Nothing. I've sent copies of e-Mail that didn't make it the first time,
and they show up the second.

Oh yeah. I've been having some strange occurances on my home domain
lately, but I find that I have more failed messages from work, than from
home.

Again, in my case, it's not limited to just my home address.

Are ya'll getting bounced mails or delivery failures? I run postfix and was
unable to post for a while. Postfix would give me mail delivery failures and
lots of "Unable to send for the last 4 hours, still trying" messages.

My problem appeared/appears to be a two-fold problem. First, my domain
wasn't acceptable to the mandrake (or kde) mailservers - a dns problem that I
fixed. Second, it depends on which ISP I use. Purdue doesn't give a rat's
that I have my own mailserver. That mail gets through fine. ISPWest, my

[expert] testing for system events. like iptables and ppp0

2002-02-05 Thread Franki

Howdy peoples.

I want to write a shell (or perl) script to test if ppp0 is up or not, and
if it isn't to restart ppp0

so for instance:

if (ppp0 ne "up")# This is the bit I am unsure of...
{
ifdown ppp0;
ifup ppp0;
}
else {
exit;
}

I get disconnected once a month by my ISP (I have a permanent dialup
connection) when they restart their router.

So I have two questions.. concerning the snippit of perl above, how do I
test for the condition of ppp0 and test for the result so I can have a
"true" or "false" result and have the if statement proceed accordingly.

I would rather do this with a shell script I can run from crontab so in
that case, I'd use the if/fi if statement, but the process is much the same.

The other problem I have, is that when I get disconnected from their end, I
get something weird happening to the modem..
ATZ should rest it, but it doesn't appear to. (its a hanes compatable 56K
KTX Modem (based on a Rockwell chipset)
Does anyone know of a way to reset the modem without having to manually turn
it on and off? (The box is not local so I can't do that..)

Also, I want to tinker with my firewall, I have a nimda/code red bocker
script that adds offending hosts to my ipchains or tables rules, and keeps a
record of the IP's blocked so it doesn't keep adding them.. I want to set it
up so that if the firewall is restarted (and the rules wiped as a result)
the blocked file (which is the old list of blocked IP's, is wiped,
rm /var/tmp/blocked and then recreated, touch /var/tmp/blocked but I need a
way to test if the IPs in the old blocked file are no longer in the ipchains
rules.. (if they are not, the blocked file should get wiped and start again.
if they are, nothing need be done.) any tips anyone???

Any tips would be much appreciated.

kindest regards

Frank

Thanks. I don' know who mentioned this but I'm not running imwheel so I
guess that explains why it doesn't work. I'm looking thru the manpage to
figure out how imwheel works. It looks like it needs to be started manually.
Is that correct or am I missing something else? I don't see an imwheel
script in the rc.d directory. Does X start imwheel automagically? Or do I
need to specify a special module?

You don't have to wait to upgrade to use your wheel mouse, it doesn't depend on the
distro version. You just have to configure them right, I used my wheel mouse with LM8.0
You need st like:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
# Option "Device""/dev/input/mice"
Option "Device""/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Buttons" "3"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "SendCoreEvents""true"
EndSection

in your XF86Config-4, the key-line is : Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
and then you need to configure your apps to work with a wheel, eg netscape doesn't run
out of the box with the wheel, mozilla and any gtk-app do though.

My wheel mouse works with some browsers (opera, netscape) and I can always use
it a third mouse button (VERY important under X).
I didn't do any special configuration for it it was recognized by the
Xconfigurator.
