The .gif to .xpm conversion you speak of.. does it work equally well in all
window managers?

Thanks,

If you take any .gif file and reduce it to 64x64 and change
it to an .xpm, you can then use it as a KDE icon.

And you can use xv to convert gif or bmp files to xpm format.

 Gil,
Adding Icons to the desktop in Linux (KDE) isn't much more difficult.
To add an icon to the desktop, you will need to do the following:
 1. right click on the desktop and select NEW option.
 2. from the NEW popup list, select the type of shortcut you want. (if its
an
application shortcut, or a folder short cut ..etc.)
 3. plug in the properties and your set.

To add something to the panel you goto the main menu and then to the
PANEL MENU and then select add application. The rest is self explanatory.

Icon. Why, and how do you add icons to the bottom. I want my Konsole start
ICON for instance and my calculator and all the rest.
"K" - "Panel" - "Add Application" - select whatever u want..

For that matter, how do you add icons to the desktop. In Windows you just
find the file executable and make a shortcut. It is usually Very easy to
find because the name is almost always the name of the application. Is there
a similar thing here and if so, how do I find out what the name of the
 programs I want might be.

I have noticed that in 7.0 I could just right click and say new applicaiton
on the desktop.. but in 7.1, right click shows just "folder".. so all i can
add is folder.

But I found another way to add icons to the desktop..
"k" -
"disk navigator" - "Desktop" - "Open Folder".

once kfm opens the folder, right click and u'll be able add anything to the
desktop now.

Its a little ugly to add applciations.. when u say new-application, it
pops up a dialog.. which omething like application.kdelink . you have to
make sure that u keep the .kdelink suffix!.. thats rediculous on part of
KDE.. so if ui want xmms, type xmms.kdelink and then the link will show
"xmms".. and then go through the other menus and add the correct executable
and set the icon.

Create a folder called, say, NewApps. Open the folder. Now you can
create an icon-link for an application, within the folder. Then move
the app to the Desktop. I don't know why the procedure was changed.

KDE gets what it presents with the right-click | New
menu from...~/.kde/Templates. This is one of those
standard aspects of KDE that Mandrake for some reason
modified or broke (depending on your point of view)
in 7.1, which I still fine very annoying.

On the other hand, it still works fine for non-root
users on one of the identical machines and installs
that I did...and luckily this is the machine I use.
Of course, why it functions on one and not the other
is still a mystery (the machines are identical, and
the installs were identical except for choice of XFree
version--though both are now running the same version).

Re: [expert] More version 7.1 problems

2000-07-20 Thread Simon Robertson

Hey Sarang,

Your not the only one disappointed in 7.1. Out of two computers in the house,
a laptop and a desktop, the laptop had no sound and the desktop just did not get
the X server running due to incompatability with a listed video card. Also out
of a number of other desktops at a linux group I go to weekly, a lot more
failures came from various installations and upgrades.

Looking at 7.1 from the laptop, I ask the question, why did they not improve
what they already had in 7.0 and not start from scratch?
Where was menu editor?
Why did they not install a search engine for K-menu with the tree setup
they also installed, it took a minute or two to find something (ie.kpackage) if
you happen to forget where it is? (Compare this to 7.0)
Why get rid of Application, Device, etc. from desktop mouse right-click?

Basically you would think with a newer version you could install on any prior
installable computer plus any new ones unknown to the prior version. But NO! not
with Mandrake 7.1 or is it (7.1(Beta)). No it should be called 7.1(Failure).
