(just for the record, so the problemcount can increment)
Also, when I finally got it to work (by installing w/o the
pcmcia card - yup, I had to do a cd-install), my orinoco silver
card hangs the kernel without emitting any recoveable logmessages
upon first use of the card. Pretty annoying. I haven't been able to try
other distributions, so I don't know if it is mdk-specific.

A linksys WUSB v2.5 will, perhaps also a v2.0. I goofed my first time and
bought a WUSB - it had been a while since it came out so I thought it likely
to be a v2.x though there was no indication whatsoever on the box. I lost
the receipt and was unable to take it back. a v1.5 will not work.

There are others, of course. I would suggest you take a look around the
linux-wlan-ng website: http://www.linux-wlan.org/index.html
Down the page is a table with a list of the working and not working devices
with the linux-wlan-ng drivers. There is an alcatel driver out there that
will work with some devices as well.

People always say this when they have a problem. First, you need to

I've had more than a problem. I'm not a big fan of Windows but at least you
can get it to install even if it doesn't have drivers for all of the hardware
(I was able to get the drivers after the install or shortly therafter). In
contrast, I can't get ML 9 to install on my server box - the box locks up
when I press enter to begin the install. It could be a hardware problem but
it's a real hassle having to remove the cover and start unplugging cards
every time I do an OS upgrade. I've had trouble with installing 7.2/8.1/8.2.
I don't remember my trouble with 7.2 but 8.1/8.2 gave me a kernel panic after
install because I had a SCSI HD and an IDE HD. I had to boot off a floppy and
modify LILO with hex addresses for bios settings for sda and hda. Let's face
reality, the average person isn't going to want to spend a day, let alone
weeks or even a month, to try to figure out why his/her hardware doesn't work
and they're definitely not going to mess with an OS that locks up their
computer when it freezes when they press enter to start an install. I
installed ML 9 on my laptop and I get occassional freezes (this began
happening after the install), also. The Mandrake website had a fix listed
(append=noacpi) and I'm trying that now. So far so good. But, I'm still
having problems with the wireless card losing it's config and I have to
execute iwconfig parameters to get it working again. And the surprising
thing is that the Netgear MA401 is suppose to be supported (it's listed in
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts). You see, the list goes on and on.

for you. They wouldn't even consider releasing the product without
windows drivers - usually multiple versions of windows.

That's no surprise when you consider the M$ market share.

 on
linux, you've GOT to plan ahead. Make sure you've got not only
comptatible hardware, but that you understand COMPLETELY what's soldered
 in your case.

That goes for any OS. But, the nice thing about Windows is that if it doesn't
have the drivers with the OS install package, the drivers are probably on the
CD that came with the hardware or it's available for d/l from the vendor
(which you probably should d/l before you start the install).

Unfortunately, I don't know everything. I'd pay for tech support but there
have been many times when I knew more than the tech support people. So, I'd
rather wait for an answer in a listserver or just replace my hardware with
something that does work. But, even though an HCL indicates that a device is
100% compatible, I've found that it isn't always so. My HP 660 and 692 are
suppose to be 100% compatible but I can't make either one print reliably on
Linux even though I installed hpijs 1.3 on my server box (which is currenlty
running ML 8.1).

As I've stated before, Linux has a long way to go before it becomes part of
the mainstream desktop community. I must say that I'm impressed with all the
improvements with Linux since the time I used Slackware 3.4.

But, I'm going to grin and bear it for a little while longer.

I'm glad to hear that someone was able to get it to work with the default ML

orinoco drivers (which didn't help, obviously, even though the PC booted up
with the new kernel). Anyway, I got it working with the help of iwconfig and
Linuxconf and MCC-NetworkInternet. Now, I have to figure out which file(s)
to store the config info so that it'll work on the next boot.

I hope that I will remember all this if I have to install or reinstall the OS.

BTW, why isn't there a .../pcmcia-3.x.x directory in ML 8.2 and 9.0 like
there was in ML 8.1? Also, according to the PCMCIA-HOWTO, there's suppose to
be a utility script called probe in a /cardmgr directory to help in
determining the PCIC - I can't find the utility or the directory. Actually I
did find a script named probe but it had something to do with NetCat.

With this kind of trouble, I can see why Linux hasn't made it into the
mainstream (as far as the desktop market goes).

Anyway, I'm using an MA401 wireless card right now on my thinkpad and it's

installed slackware 8.1 a couple of weeks ago to try it out and it worked
in there just as well. I used the same card in my old toshiba laptop.

Could it be that there is something else wrong? Maybe a bad card? I just
plug mine in to the pcmcia slot and boot the computer and do the install -
the card is recognized and it installs with no problem. Again, it's a
 Netgear MA401.

 Friday, [EMAIL PROTECTED] mused:
I've tried linux-wlan-ng-pre4/5/6 and I still can't get my wireless card
to work. It's a Netgear MA401. I followed the directions in the README
  file and added alias wlan0 prism2_cs to /etc/modules.conf but I can't get
the beast to work! The default install did not associate the card with
the AP even though the README file assured me that it would associate to
any nearby AP. lsmod shows that the drivers (prism2_cs and p80211) were
installed. After configuring the appropriate files in /etc/wlan plus
/etc/pcmcia/network.opts, the card still will not associate with the AP
even though I do have the correct SSID in the config files. Plus, the
nameserver info that I entered into /etc/pcmcia/network.opts never got
written to /etc/resolv.conf nor did wlan0 get configured with an IP
address. But, I was able to assign an IP address to wlan0 with Linuxconf
(I know, this isn't the right way to do it).

I tried to get the card to work using a file and with instructions, on
how to use the orinoco driver, that someone had provided and that didn't
  get it going either.

The card works when booted into Windows 2000.

So, I have to ask: why is it so difficult to get a wireless card to work
  under linux?

  Mandrake Linux 9.0.

This works for a Dlink 11meg card and I used I think linux-wlan-1.14.
This was a little while back and I now have a 22meg Dlink which has a
different chipset and not supported by Linux.

modprobe prism2_pci

wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable

wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=your APs SSID
authtype=opensystem

ifconfig wlan0 yourIP netmask yourNetmask broadcast
yourBroadcast

route add default gw yourGateway

At this point it should work but mine didnt.
I had to do a extra
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan start
then it would magically start working.

Hope that helps
