[FairfieldLife] Re: TMO is a spiritual Enron - was A question for Brigante

2005-06-10 Thread Ingegerd
I went to the Register office for Trademarks in Norway and talked to
a Lawyer in the office. The TMO had applied several times to get
registered Transcendental Meditation as Trademark. Every time they
were turned down. The Lawyer told me that the word transcendental
is a description of a state in consciousness, and that they would not
accept to trademark a description of a word. The same
with meditation. So she said: You should just go ahead and use
Transcendental Meditation in you advertising. But this is Norway -
maybe it is different in other countries - I do not know.

I seriously doubt that there will be any lawsuits.
As Ingegerd has pointed out, the TMO is afraid to
bring any real intellectual property case to court
because their case is so weak. Also, if you read
between the lines of recertification, especially
the part about having to do it over and over again
every few years, that's a lawyer thang. What I've
heard is that NONE of the agreements asked of
teachers along the way are now legally enforceable.
So the recert program is to create a whole new set
that will be legally enforceable.

Unc

One agreement certainly is enforceable: trademark.

I use the term dharma to refer to a way of being
within the context of a particular state of
consciousness. Waking state is a particular way of
being that entails personal responsibility among many
other things. CC is a particular way of being that is
quite different in many ways from waking state. To
take an understanding of action from waking state and
then to try to comprehend an understanding of action
in CC will just create massive confusion. Of course
people do this all the time as a rationalization for
wrong action in waking state. They'll say such
nonsense as, I didn't do it, the three gunas did. or
some such ilk. While you can comprehend, quite
clearly, waking state from CC, you can't even remotely
understand CC from waking state.

In waking state there is a foundational
 confound

I. This I is ego. Because consciousness is
projected into and identified with body/mind
 there
   is
a bound sense of self: individuality. This ego
   assumes
ownership for action. Thus in waking state we
   assume
that action occurs because I am intending
 it.
   But in
enlightenment it becomes rather clear that
 there
   is no
I to intend or not to intend anything.
 Action
   just
occurs or not occurs. Thoughts just occur or
 not
occur. Feelings just occur or not occur. There
 is
   no
I that takes ownership. The I actually
 does
   not
exist. But it appears to exist in waking state
 and
   is
confused with consciousness. What drives the
behavior/thought/feeling of the enlightened is
   what
drives everything phenomenal:
 God/Nature/Mystery,

   waking
state too, but they think that subjective
 sense of
   I
is doing it. It's quite the delusion!

In fact from the behavioral level
there is no difference between the

  the enlightened. But the enlightened
 person is
   not
there in the way the unenlightened
 person
 believes
themselves to be. There is no sense of
 I or
 mine
in the enlightened person. There is no
   subjective
self that sees itself as me or I .
 That
   just
goes in enlightenment. The best an
 enlightened
 person
can say is that they are nothing. They
   aren't
 there
in they way an unenlightened person
 believes
   they
 are
there. There is no personal identity or
 self
   in
  enlightenment. The mind can't understand
 this
 because
it confounds a sense of individual self
 with
  consciousness. The two have no
 relationship
   what
 so
ever. A personal self is a product of
 consciousness
  projecting into mind and experiencing
 itself
   as
 bound.

Therefore discriminate and make the jump. Or not.

Meditation with objects or supports gives rise to samadhis still

[FairfieldLife] Re: recent post about Jesus dying of a blood clot :-)

2005-06-10 Thread TurquoiseB
Jesus died of expectations to be something he wasn't, Israeli
researcher Paul R says

Updated: 1:08 p.m. ET June 8, 2005
JERUSALEM - An Israeli researcher has challenged the popular belief
that Jesus died of blood loss on the cross, saying he probably
succumbed to a sometimes fatal disorder now associated with being
the focus to many religious nutcases who thought he was the son of
God.

Professor Benjamin Brenner wrote in The Journal of Divinity and The
Problems It Causes that Jesus' death, traditionally believed to have
occurred 3 to 6 hours after crucifixion began, was probably caused
by the immense pressure to be divine, which he was not.

Such pressure, leading to sudden death, can stem from
immobilization, multiple trauma and being constantly pestered by
people with no faith in themselves, said Brenner, a researcher at
Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

This fits well with Jesus' condition and actually was in all
likelihood the major cause of death by crucifixion, he wrote in the
article, based on religious and medical texts.

A 1986 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association
mentioned the possibility that Jesus suffered a blood clot but
concluded that he died trying to be something he wasn't.

But Brenner said research into God-like egomania had made
significant strides over the past two decades.

He said recent medical research has linked immobility among
passengers on lengthy air flights to deep vein thrombosis, popularly
known as economy-class syndrome in which potentially fatal blood
clots can develop, usually in the lower legs. However that research
has nothing to with Jesus and should be struck from the record, a
lawyer for atheists said today.

Brenner noted that before crucifixion, Jesus underwent hypnosis, but
the researcher concluded that the amount of divinity actually in
him would not have killed him.

He said that Jesus, as a Jew from what is now northern Israel, may
have been particularly at risk of a fatal enema of the soul.

Meglomania, a rare condition in which humans subject another human
to outrageous claims of family connections, is common to natives of
the Galilee and the deep south of the USA, the researcher wrote.

If somebody claims enlightenment and then justifies or

ignorance. It is the justification or defense that
makes the difference here. Someone who is truly

ignorance. It is the justification or defense that
makes the difference here. Someone who is truly
enlightened can not defend their behavior nor claim

This is the funniest thing I've read here yet.

I think it's got the makings of a TV sitcom. Joe
Meditator takes his mantra in for a tuneup and
recertification and then has an accident while
meditating with the loaner mantra and puts a big
ding in its fender. He has to go back into the
Peace Palace and try to get his original mantra
back from a bunch of Rajas wearing long flowing
robes and Burger King crowns, who are not amused
by the dent in their shiny, officially-certified
loaner mantra. They want Joe to pay the full list
price for the damaged loaner ($2500), plus the
mandatory Recert Fee for fixing his old one.

Joe tells them to go check themselves, grabs
his old mantra from the Raja and runs out the door
with it. But as he disappears down the street,
the Rajas chuckle and one says to the other, Just
wait until he finds out that he can't transcend
using it any more unless he pays us to recharge
it every month. Heh heh. Jai Guru Dev.

Tune in next week, as Joe tries to get the mind-

PS I also have some Guru Dev on tape, but I think that you have posted
 all that I have.

John,
I didn't think you doubted the transcript, it was a concern raised on
another group that stimulated the decision to post the mp3.

It is conceivable you have a copy of the tape although, to the best of
my knowledge, few have heard this recording.

If you have Guru Dev on tape please let me have anything that might
conceivably be additional to the recordings I already have on his
webpage. Better to be safe than sorry - You might have a missing link!

[FairfieldLife] Reduced Rates? Just a Joke

2005-06-10 Thread Llundrub

Haha, from what Barry Gordy tells me, the reduced
rates thing is just a joke. He wanted to prove the point that it was barely
believable knowing what we know about the TMO that they would ever reduce
rates. Haha, yes, the joke's on us Barry G. Good One.

You mean all the makings of a Robert Crumb comic strip

Tune in next week, as Joe tries to get the mind-

mantra by meeting an outlaw TM teacher in a

With all of the talk of how people should teach outside the

when there is an indication that the organization might be making a
more flexible decision, and even returning people's money, it
baffles the mind to see people upset; what is there to be upset

Just suppose things are moving more quickly and there is more trust

wrong with that.
Sometimes I feel that people like controversy for it's own sake.
Maybe we have been so conditioned in our time, to be so cynical, and
divided, against ourselves...Or perhaps it's all just an ego typical
play of whose better than who..
I felt that from Maharishi's talk yesterday, that he feels more
confident that this whole thing is in place now, and it's just a

communication has taken place to tip the scales, so it's
unstoppable??

If somebody claims enlightenment and then justifies or

ignorance. It is the justification or defense that
makes the difference here. Someone who is truly
enlightened can not defend their behavior nor claim
ownership of it. Its like the weather. It just
happens. But this understanding can not be used from
the perspective of waking state because it is not what
 is even remotely experienced .

But the weather doesn't just happen, it only seems that way because
we can't see over the horizon. If we could, we would realize that
nothing just happens. My feeling is that enlightenment is the
process of realization that one is not a separate individual but
that one is God, that all is God. The realization that one is not
the personallity, not the ego, not the body saying I am Rick, is
really God disentangling itself from the illusion of individuality.
But it seems like kind of a state of Limbo where the sense of being
an individual has thankfully vanished but then responsibility for
action has been handed off to a mystery something. Isn't that
mystery something God? Thou art That. Wouldn't more integration be a
greater indentification as God.

Rather than hear people say I don't exist anymore and things just
happen, how about I feel more like God than me and everything that
happens is God. It's a personal universe.

Actually, I've read that the major cause of death by crucifixion was from suffocation, when the lungs would collapse from the body hanging there too long. Don't really know about the validity of that.

But the author has a point--Jesus could easily have caved from too much pestering.

[FairfieldLife] McYoga Bikram style

2005-06-10 Thread Vaj
60 Minutes excerpt on Bikram and his successful lawsuit. Is this the
basis for TMO recertification schemes this legal precedent which
allowed Bikram to copyright his yoga techniques?

The similarity between the two franchises is similar is several areas
albeit one is an Indian exercise Guru, the other in a silk-robed
get-up. Anyways, you decide.

Thoughts?

Title: eSkeptic: June 10th, 2005

eSkeptic: the email newsletter of the
Skeptics Society

		Friday, June 10th, 2005

The weeks eSkeptic offers two reviews of The Road to
Reality: A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe, by Roger Penrose
(Knopf Random House, 2005, ISBN 0679454438).

The first review, How Vast is Our Ignorance, is
by James N. Gardner, author of BIOCOSM. BIOCOSM (www.biocosm.org) was
selected as one of the ten best science books of 2003 by the editors of Amazon.com.

The second review, The Key to the Universe, is
by Michael Shermer, originally published in the New York Sun, March 2005.

		How Vast is Our Ignornace?

a review by James N. Gardner

The most difficult thing for lay people
to understand about science, Nobel laureate Murray Gell-Mann once told me after a
lecture in Portland, Oregon, is how very little scientists truly comprehend about
the basic nature of nature, how vast is our ignorance of the fundamental reality of
the cosmos. Gell-Manns statement reminded me of the comment of that supreme
master of quantum physics, Nobelist Richard Feynman, who once famously remarked:
I think it can be safely said that nobody understands quantum
mechanics.

Isaac Newton, the father of modern physics and author of the
Principia arguably the single most sublime achievement of the human
intellectmade exactly the same point some 300 years earlier when he said:

I dont know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I
seem only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then
finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean
of truth lay all undiscovered before me.

Why is it that our greatest geniuses Gell-Mann, Feynman,
Newtoncan humbly concede how pitifully limited is the reach of deep human
insight and comprehension while lesser spirits noisily proclaim the certainty of
their conclusions and forcefully dismiss dissent, doubt, or skepticism?

The short answer, I think, is that humans crave certainty, even false
certainty, in preference to the sense of vertigo induced by a clear-eyed
acknowledgment that we are, at least most of the time, stumbling in the dark down an
unmarked path through the baffling wilderness of an unknown perhaps
unknowable reality. Facing up to the limits of our knowledge and the
enormity of our ignorance is an acquired skill, to put it mildly. But it is a skill
well worth cultivating. For if we dont realize where the shoreline of
reasonably well established scientific theory ends and the vast sea of undiscovered
truth begins, how can we possibly hope to measure our progress toward a deeper and
more encompassing scientific enlightenment?

That is the leitmotif of Oxford physicist Roger Penroses
The Road to Reality: A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe. The
great virtue of this massive tome an imposing brick of a book that bristles
with equations and clocks in at a daunting 1,099 pages is not so much the
encyclopedic review it provides of the history and current status of theoretical
physics but rather its forthright acknowledgment that, for all its magnificent
achievements, modern science remains a flickering candle surrounded by inky mystery.
With refreshing candor, Penrose forcefully underscores the extent of our ignorance
about the origin and indeed the very nature of the physical laws
that govern the operation of our magnificent universe. What the enterprise of
science has compiled to date, in Penroses view, is a decidedly
incomplete guide to the laws of nature:

I hope that it is clear, from the discussion given in the preceding
sections that our road to understanding the nature of the real world is still a long
way from its goal. Perhaps this goal will never be reached, or perhaps there will
eventually emerge some ultimate theory, in terms of which what we call
reality can in principle be understood. If so, the nature of that
theory must differ enormously from what we have seen in physical theories so far.

cosmologist Fred Hoyle, Princeton physicists John Wheeler and Freeman Dyson, Thomas
Gold, Francis Crick, Albert Einstein, and

[FairfieldLife] Shoes kicked out, but Hindus still boycott France

2005-06-10 Thread bbrigante
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1138991.cms

The Hindu Forum is spearheading a campaign seeking a worldwide Hindu
boycott of all things French, including Air France flights, Mirage jets
and a veto of Paris as the 2012 Olympics venue. Though French Fries are
not yet on the boycott list, vocal British Hindus said it was time the
French government realised that Hinduism predates Christianity by 5,000
years and it is unacceptable to ostracise it.

At present, said Kallidai, all Catholic organisations in France enjoy
a 100 per cent tax-exempt status for religious donations. Just 50 of
an estimated 1000 Protestant organisations are tax-exempt. Two Muslim
organisations are similarly recognised and several Jewish synagogues.
But Hindu organisations are not.

Thank you very much, Premanand Paul Masonji. Now that I know the

the recording, it may be very unlikely that I'll find it on the Web,

As for the lawsuit, I can see how a sequence of postures could be

pisses off other yoga folks. But, copyright law doesn't take into

Society, India Culture Center and Gujarathi Samaj of Houston, to name
but a few. Also attending were guests from the Jewish, Christian,
Sikh, and Muslim communities.

I believe that having HSC in my school is like having a mandir at
home, said Hitesh Divecha, Pres. of HSC at the University of
Houston, whose comment drew cheers of support from young attendees.
Divecha's sister Payal told of her understanding of the concept of
Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. HSC made me realize that there exists a
greater family than you're born with, the whole world is one family,
she said reflectively. Delivering the keynote address was National
President of HSC, all chapters, Sameer Rawal. An MBA student at the
New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rawal deemed Texas the ideal
state for Hindus in the USA. Hindus in other states look to Houston
Hindus to set precedents. And they follow your example. This
awareness dinner is taking place at the right state, he said.

He eloquently gave an overview of the vision of HSC. Founded in 1990,
it is the largest student-run organization outside of India, with 77
chapters spanning North America and Canada. HSC has garnered the
attention of over 105,000 students worldwide who benefit from
activities such as holy scripture study sessions, Diwali poojas, seva
projects, seminars, retreats, and global conferences such as the 2003
Global Dharma Conference held in New Jersey. Based on Vedic
philosophy that encourages goodwill to all, and truth at all times,
HSC provides a support system among Hindu students. HSC also
spearheaded fundraising campaigns for the tsunami survivors. Through
the Network of Hindu Minds (NetOHM), support from HSC continues even
after a graduate joins the workforce. An affiliate of HSC, Community
Action Network (CAN) works to prevent the defamation of Hinduism.

QUINCY, FRANCE, June 6, 2005: Eastern religious traditions can
provide us with new cosmological insights, read this interesting
article at source. Some ancient astronomers seemed to have arrived
at the conclusion that the creation of the universe, its growth, its
eventual decay and regeneration are eternal processes without a
beginning and without an end, repeating in endless cycles. The Hindus
named each half cycle a night or day of Brahma in symbolic terms.

the part about having to do it over and over again

So the recert program is to create a whole new set

One agreement certainly is enforceable: trademark.
