Why the pokes at the Democratic Party? They have been rediculously

 silence would necessarily be...).

So, if they are pretty ineffectual these days, which is obviously
the case, and the Republicans are in charge of the Presidency, the
Congress, and the Supreme Court, what's the problem with the
 Democrats?

Amy Sullivan of Washington Monthly has an eye-opening
article that rather neatly rebuts the notion that the
Democrats are floundering around and letting Bush get
away with stuff. Basically, she says the problem is
that the media aren't reporting what the Democrats are
doing, and she gives a bunch of examples:

http://tinyurl.com/zud3c

Excerpt:

If the unsung Democratic guerillas were ever to adopt a mascot, it
would have to be Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.). The 10-term
congresswoman from upstate New York is someone you don't hear about
very often because: a) she's a House Democrat, and the media only has
room for one of those, if that; and b) she's far too feisty and
interesting. In a different news world that actually covered
opposition parties, she'd be a media darling. Slaughter rarely bites
her tongue, and she doesn't mind turning the tables on reporters. At
age 76, she looks at least 15 years younger and has the energy of
someone 50 years her junior. When I met Slaughter at her top-floor
office in the Rayburn House Office Building to talk about why no one
knows what she's been doing, she was ready to vent.

There's this assumption that we're the Three Stooges over here,
bungling around, she said, rolling her eyes. I hear it all day and
all night. What's wrong with Democrats? she mimics. There's nothing
wrong with us! Slaughter herself has waged an ongoing—and largely
unnoticed—campaign to highlight the ways in which Republicans have
abused the legislative process, locking Democrats out completely and
awarding themselves unbridled power. She almost single-handedly
forced Republicans to back off on plans to tamper with the Ethics
Committee in order to give Tom DeLay a break. The problem she and her
colleagues run into over and over, Slaughter tells me, is
that nobody knows what we're doing up here because nobody ever
covers it. A perfect example occurred at the beginning of March.
Slaughter, who is a ranking member on the House Rules Committee,
released the report America for Sale: The Cost of Republican
Corruption, outlining all of the ways that congressional Republicans
have not only gamed the system, but created their own legislative
system. She followed it up a week later with a legislative package to
reform the House rules process, one of the major sources of GOP
power.

At a press conference to announce this reform package, Slaughter made
her case and then challenged the reporters present, daring them to
tell the story of how the Rules Committee had been hijacked.
Unsurprisingly, no one did. That is, until Republicans decided to
attack Slaughter's report, charging that it constituted campaign
activity and was therefore an unlawful use of her office. Once
journalists had a Republican angle to cover, it became a story,
although the substance of Slaughter's report and its accusations was
never mentioned.

It's a fairly long article, but if you want a
shorter version, Kevin Drum has a post about it
on his blog that hits the high spots:

http://tinyurl.com/jzdj7

Excerpt from Drum's post:

Democrats have actually been surprisingly united and effective over
the past year despite their minority status and the media's
insistence on pushing their favored storyline of Dems as hopelessly
divided and timid. The reality is that the sell-by date on that
storyline expired long ago.

Consider. Democrats successfully killed a Social Security
privatization plan that nearly everyone thought was a lock for
passage. Harry Reid forced the Intelligence Committee to investigate
prewar intelligence by shutting down the Senate. Nancy Pelosi worked
shrewdly with Jack Murtha to give him the maximum possible attention
for his pro-withdrawal message. (Yes, really.) George Miller single-
handedly forced George Bush to rescind his suspension of the Davis-
Bacon Act following Hurricane Katrina. And Chuck Schumer was the
driving force behind criticism of the Dubai port deal.

I've never said that, of course, as Barry knows.

Obviously this trick worked for Judy when other

Not to the contrary, sorry. As Barry knows, I've

In other words, folks, Barry is lying again.

Jim has a somewhat more grownup approach to
spiritual experience. When the subject comes
up, he just describes his. He doesn't categorize
them, he doesn't make a big deal about them, and
 he doesn't dwell on them.

He doesn't play dueling experiences, suggest that
his critics are criticizing him only because they
haven't had any spiritual experiences, or demand
that people describe their experiences or be
labeled as never having had any, either.

Jim isn't a phony like Barry.

Careful, Jim. You don't want to get on Barry's list
of people who argue about politics because they have
no spiritual experiences to report.

Ha Ha! Barry or you can put me on any list you want. From my
previous perspective where I would notice and observe the
 contrast
of spiritual experiences, I would say I am constantly having
spiritual experiences these days. Most notably in my dreams,
 which
have become very clear. I'll have a desire when I am awake,
then
  act
it out in my dream, and then it goes away when I am awake
again.
Also can't hold onto desires like I used to. Its just
different.
Lost my fear of death and dying too. Don't get me wrong- I am
 very
happy being alive in this body and would like to continue this
 for
awhile, but realize that death (such a strange word, eh?)
isn't
really any different than this, here. Also don't notice much
difference between deep transcendence and right now. No big
deal-

its just that I used to crave a greater contrast in meditation
 and
notice it. Now I don't. What's up with that?

(says Jim, hastily reporting an experience so
Barry won't put him on the list)

No need. You see, Jim's never used that old

I certainly heard the we never discuss our experiences from TM
TBers but I never, ever got the impression that there was an
attitude of big nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean, know
what I mean accompanying it.

Be that as it may, if anyone wants a slew of wonderful experiences
to read, then pick up pretty much any book by Swami Muktananda
because he has no qualms about discussing his experiences which he
does extensively in most of his books.

I recommend Play of Consciousness as a starter...

Obviously this trick worked for Judy when other
TM teachers did it to her, so she's hoping it'll

question -- honestly -- and moves on. It's a role
model that someone who spends as much time posturing
as an honest person as Judy does might want to
 pay more attention to. :-)

 Here's what Barry said:

From my side, it's been so pleasant to *not* interface
with her that I'm going to continue with this little
experiment and continue to ignore her.

Exactly. Does anyone see the word forever in
that sentence? Does anyone even see it implied?

Did anyone notice that Judy did *NOT* apologize
for lying or making a misstatement? Not even when
it was made apparent that's what she was doing?

I *hoped* to ignore her. I still have that hope.
But I knew even when I said what I did above that I
would probably be unable to do so 100%. Judy is,
after all, such a treasuretrove of bullshit that
every so often one just *has* to comment on the
bullshit. :-)

Just as a contrast, since I posted that statement
above, Judy has written 18 posts that specifically
insulted me, called me a liar and other names, and
did their level best *TO* draw me back into a head-
to-head confrontation with her. I'd say I've done
pretty well to have ignored her as much as I have
done. :-)

I stand by what I wrote. Judy *USED* to be more
honest when it came to her own personal experiences
with higher states of consciousness. She was down-
right *OPEN* on a.m.t. about NEVER HAVING HAD ANY.

But here, faced with an audience that *has* had
such experiences, suddenly she's singing a different
tune, and *IMPLYING* that she's had experiences that
I think most of us here suspect she has not (or she
wouldn't say so many stupid things about them). So
I stand by my opinion -- she is intentionally LYING
(by omission) about her range of subjective experience,
and she knows she's lying about it.

Now, having made my point, back to ignoring her.

Judy really hates that...watch how many posts she
makes in the next few days trashing me. The more
I ignore her, the more posts she'll make to try to
lure me back in to the head-to-head argumentation
she lives for. (Just look at how many *other* posters
on FFL she's lured into that kind of head-to-head
confrontation in the time since I've been ignoring
her...a junkie's gotta have her arguments.) Mark my
words...I'll bet she makes at least 18 *more* posts
insulting me within the next week. :-) :-) :-)

No need. You see, Jim's never used that old
 tried-ant-true TM shuck-and-jive routine that
Judy uses when it comes to experiences.

Anybody remember Barry, a few days ago, vowing that
his ignoring me since mid-March was such a great
success that he'd decided he was going to ignore
me forever?

Anybody notice that Judy is lying here about
   what I said?

  Here's what Barry said:

From my side, it's been so pleasant to *not* interface
with her that I'm going to continue with this little
experiment and continue to ignore her.

Exactly. Does anyone see the word forever in
that sentence? Does anyone even see it implied?

Of course it's implied. You didn't qualify it in
any way with, e.g., for a while, for the next
month/year/decade.

Did anyone notice that Judy did *NOT* apologize
for lying or making a misstatement? Not even when
it was made apparent that's what she was doing?

Au contraire, dude.

I *hoped* to ignore her. I still have that hope.

Hope is not a plan.

But I knew even when I said what I did above that I
would probably be unable to do so 100%.

Oddly enough, you didn't say that. You led folks
to believe you'd kicked the habit for good.

But your unqualified statement didn't even last
a week--exactly as I predicted.

  Judy is,
after all, such a treasuretrove of bullshit that
every so often one just *has* to comment on the
 bullshit. :-)

Just as a contrast, since I posted that statement
above, Judy has written 18 posts that specifically
insulted me, called me a liar and other names, and
did their level best *TO* draw me back into a head-
 to-head confrontation with her.

No, I just expressed my opinon, as I always have
and always will. What Barry really means here
is that he was sorely *tempted* to be drawn in.

He didn't resist for very long, did he?

  I'd say I've done
pretty well to have ignored her as much as I have
 done. :-)

I stand by what I wrote. Judy *USED* to be more
honest when it came to her own personal experiences
with higher states of consciousness. She was down-
right *OPEN* on a.m.t. about NEVER HAVING HAD ANY.

I'll just point out again the absolute idiocy of
assuming that what someone reports of their
experiences at one particular point in time is
somehow the absolute limit and that they will
never experience anything more in the future.

If somebody were to make such a suggestion to Barry,
you'd hear his howls of scorn all the way to Vlodrop.

But here, faced with an audience that *has* had
such experiences, suddenly she's singing a different
tune, and *IMPLYING* that she's had experiences that
I think most of us here suspect she has not

Most people here aren't phonies, Barry. You really
need to bear that in mind when you attribute views
to others.

 (or she
wouldn't say so many stupid things about them).

snicker Such as what? You must have some things
in mind, Barry. Please cite them.

 So
I stand by my opinion -- she is intentionally LYING
(by omission) about her range of subjective experience,
and she knows she's lying about it.

Now, having made my point, back to ignoring her.

Uh-huh. I give it two weeks, max.

Every single time I've made such a prediction, it's
been borne out.

Judy really hates that...watch how many posts she
makes in the next few days trashing me. The more
I ignore her, the more posts she'll make to try to
lure me back in to the head-to-head argumentation
 she lives for.

No, I'll comment on your posts if and as I see fit,
as I always have.

Barry, you know this attempted intimidation tactic--
which you've used many times before--doesn't work
with me. Just a reminder of the definition of
insanity: doing the exact same thing over and over
again in the hope that the result will be different.

If you want me to stop criticizing your posts, there's
one thing you can do that will actually be effective:
stop being such a rank phony, and stop lying.

I know this is something people often say, but I can't say I agree with it. In
work

it, If the fool would persist in his folly, he would become wise.

I actually find her quite attractive myself.

  She's also
wonderfully vivacious and extremely articulate in
 the interviews I've seen.

Other than the press conference of the other day, I haven't seen her
interviewed. From what I've read, I think her politics are the most
horrible and most destructive.

By the way, concerning Drudge's choice of photos. Certainly, he
cherry-picked a most unattractive one purposely, I'll agree to
that. But, of course, he did it on purpose and he would probably be
the first to admit it.

I remember seeing him interviewed by Brian Lamb on C-SPAN a few
years ago when he was taking callers. One caller complained to him
that he thought his coverage of Israel was extremely biased.

Drudge's response? It was short and I think it summed up the power
that the internet holds for the individual. He replied: If you
don't like it, start your own website.

Of course, Drudge was just literally one guy -- himself -- sitting
in his appartment and was a news junkie. He started a website where
all he pretty much did was post links to stories that interested him
and he put on scoops that people sent him or that he fished out on
the internet. Not being a major news outlet he wasn't subject to
the usual verification rules or other rules of journalism so he put
alot of rumors -- many unsubstantiated and, it would turn out later,
wrong -- that major news outlets could never put out or would wait
until they got better confirmation before they would put out.

As the story goes, that's why Drudge got the Lewinsky story before
anybody 'cause Newsweek had it, was going to go with it, but was
waiting for more verification. Drudge had the luxury of not having
to wait, so he went with it and the rest is history.

They say that, today, most journalists and newsrooms in America are
ALL linked to Drudge and that his website is the #1 place where
jouranlists go to first for news.

Quite powerful for one individual...and it's pretty much still a one-
man operation as I understand it (Maybe he's got one employee or
something like that).

I don't think Drudge likes her, so he used the most
unflattering

She's really a very attractive woman.

I actually find her quite attractive myself.

   She's also
wonderfully vivacious and extremely articulate in
  the interviews I've seen.

Other than the press conference of the other day, I haven't seen
her
interviewed. From what I've read, I think her politics are the
most
 horrible and most destructive.

By the way, concerning Drudge's choice of photos. Certainly, he
cherry-picked a most unattractive one purposely, I'll agree to
that. But, of course, he did it on purpose and he would probably
be
 the first to admit it.

He started a website
where
all he pretty much did was post links to stories that interested
him
and he put on scoops that people sent him or that he fished out
on
the internet. Not being a major news outlet he wasn't subject to
the usual verification rules or other rules of journalism so he put
alot of rumors -- many unsubstantiated and, it would turn out
later,
wrong -- that major news outlets could never put out or would wait
until they got better confirmation before they would put out.

Quite powerful for one individual...and it's pretty much still a
one-
man operation as I understand it (Maybe he's got one employee or
 something like that).

Yeah, plenty of nuts on both sides. Read a great article in the New
York magzine though, about how the Dems are targeting 6 seats in the
Senate I think it was to gain a majority. Hope they can pull it off.
Will be a miracle all around if that happens.

Right, Congress is lily-white on the Republican side
of the aisle.

On the Democratic side, there are 42 black representatives
and one Democratic senator.

Guess that's why you're not a Democrat, huh, Shemp?

Why is race the first thing that pops into your mind when you see
the photo that I posted, Judy?

I think that says alot more about you than anything.

I posted the photo that I did because the very fact that this
particular person is ALLOWED to be a member of the Democratic Party
says oodles about liberals: they are sympathetic to anti-semites and
racists.

Had Robert Byrd -- a white Democrat -- been in the news as of late,
I would have put his photo on there.

No, there was no caption.

In light of current events I thought the picture would speak for
itself.

I was wrong.

The point was: this is a picture of a racist and anti-semite and,
like former Klansman Robert Byrd, is a member of the Democratic

One person makes up an entire party when the other members of the

Do you honestly think the Democratic Party, weak and impotent as it

Where does the real responsibility currently lie for the mess that

Maybe they don't know it exists. And while one person can be representative of a group, they cannot make up a group on their own. Two entirely different things, Shemp.

Yes, from Georgia (elected in 2004 by 64 percent in
a majority white district; she'd already served 10

She's something of a fringe-left nutcase, and she's

Here's a fairly balanced piece on her antics from

She has something like a 95 percent ADA voting record,
and she has fought hard for many progressive causes
(pro-union, pro-education, pro-abortion rights, etc.).

The Capitol Hill police, it seems, have a history of
great difficulty recognizing her as a member of
Congress. She's currently embroiled in a dispute in
which she apparently smacked a Hill officer in the
chest after he grabbed her to stop her from entering
the building without passing through the metal
detector (members of Congress don't have to). They
say she doesn't wear her official pin.

Oh. Is she an elected representative?

Yes, from Georgia (elected in 2004 by 64 percent in
a majority white district; she'd already served 10
years in Congress but was defeated in 2002).

 She's something of a fringe-left nutcase, and she's
a favorite target of right-wingers like Shemp.
Google Cynthia McKinney and racist and you'll
see what kind of company Shemp keeps.

Here's a fairly balanced piece on her antics from
 Slate:

 http://www.slate.com/?id=2064530

She has something like a 95 percent ADA voting record,
and she has fought hard for many progressive causes
 (pro-union, pro-education, pro-abortion rights, etc.).

The Capitol Hill police, it seems, have a history of
great difficulty recognizing her as a member of
Congress. She's currently embroiled in a dispute in
which she apparently smacked a Hill officer in the
chest after he grabbed her to stop her from entering
the building without passing through the metal
detector (members of Congress don't have to). They
say she doesn't wear her official pin.

Actually it's not only they (the Capital Hill Police) that say she
didn't wear her offical pin; that's the one thing that McKinney
herself agrees with.

By the way, there is apparently a videotape of the whole incident
that hasn't yet been released. It will be interesting to see what's
in it.

Hard to prove. She doesn't wear her official pin,
apparently, so she's almost inviting it. On the
other hand, you wonder whether the same thing would
happen with a white congresswoman (or man, for that
matter). Somehow I have the sense the police would
have a lot less trouble recognizing the person, with
or without a pin.

I think she is threatening a lawsuit against the
officer who grabbed her, however.

Sal, Capitol Hill police do have trouble recognizing her
because she frequently changes her hairstyle and general appearance and
frequently doesn't wear her congressional id badge. There have been about 5
times in the past that they have had to stop her to identify
her.

Actually I did, and here's a good example of what I found:

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney: April 20th Statement for Peace

We come here today from the four corners of this nation.

We are blacks and whites, Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans; Christians, Muslims, and Jews; gay, lesbian, and straight; immigrants and native-born Americans; rich and poor.

Here today are representatives of all sections of society: students, union members . . .

union members on strike . . .

homeless veterans . . .

and everyday warriors on the battlefield for justice.

But despite all our differences, we are here today . . . one community with one thing in common: a desire to see the restoration of the true ideals of America.

Sure sounds like a racist to me--no wonder Shemp doesn't like her.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Don't everyone's clothes fluctuate on, say, a daily basis? Make-up too. And it's pretty unlikely that she would either gain or lose weight so quickly that someone would have trouble recognizing her. The few pictures of her that I recall seeing all look pretty consistent.

Actually it's not only they (the Capital Hill Police) that say she
didn't wear her offical pin; that's the one thing that McKinney
 herself agrees with.

By the way, there is apparently a videotape of the whole incident
that hasn't yet been released. It will be interesting to see what's
 in it.

The upshot of all this is that there's at least one elected Democratic
member of COngress who may qualify in many people's minds as
a nutcase.

Of course, as we all know, there are no nutcases on the Republican side
of Congress...

Careful, Jim. You don't want to get on Barry's list
of people who argue about politics because they have
no spiritual experiences to report.

If one is reporting spiritual experiences as mine, the
experiences
 are at best trivial.

Yeah, I agree. Speaking for myself, the attribution of the
experiences as 'mine' is used as convention, in order to be
understood. Nonetheless, the experiences are experienced as trivial.
You are correct.

Having a list of such ones claiming their individual
specialness
 is kind of funny.

Again, speaking only for myself, I agree. Definitely kind of funny.

Where does the real responsibility currently lie for the
mess
that every sector of the country is in?

Careful, Jim. You don't want to get on Barry's list
of people who argue about politics because they have
   no spiritual experiences to report.

Ha Ha! Barry or you can put me on any list you want. From my
previous perspective where I would notice and observe the
contrast
of spiritual experiences, I would say I am constantly having
spiritual experiences these days. Most notably in my dreams,
which
have become very clear. I'll have a desire when I am awake, then
 act
it out in my dream, and then it goes away when I am awake again.
Also can't hold onto desires like I used to. Its just different.
Lost my fear of death and dying too. Don't get me wrong- I am
very
happy being alive in this body and would like to continue this
for
awhile, but realize that death (such a strange word, eh?) isn't
really any different than this, here. Also don't notice much
difference between deep transcendence and right now. No big deal-

its just that I used to crave a greater contrast in meditation
and
notice it. Now I don't. What's up with that?

(says Jim, hastily reporting an experience so
Barry won't put him on the list)

No need. You see, Jim's never used that old
tried-ant-true TM shuck-and-jive routine that
Judy uses when it comes to experiences.

You know the one. Someone asks, Have you
personally had experiences of enlightenment?

And the TM TB says, We never discucss our
experiences, with a big nudge, nudge, wink,
wink, know what I mean, know what I mean? :-)

Obviously this trick worked for Judy when other
TM teachers did it to her, so she's hoping it'll
work when she does it here (despite her own
words to the contrary that remain on the record).

Jim has a somewhat more grownup approach to
spiritual experience. When the subject comes
up, he just describes his. He doesn't categorize
them, he doesn't make a big deal about them, and
he doesn't dwell on them. He just deals with the
question -- honestly -- and moves on. It's a role
model that someone who spends as much time posturing
as an honest person as Judy does might want to
pay more attention to. :-)
