One of the most formative movies of that era for me was Nevil Shute's "On The

I can still feel the poignancy of the characters in that film -- humans on

I never saw the movie but the book was a favourite. Long time since I read it,
but yes it was poignant and the last few people had pointless lives for sure. A
bitter blow at the end I remember, false hopes dashed...
I'm not alone in feeling that the film of "On The Beach" was important. Nobel
Prize winner Linus Pauling once said, "It may be that some years from now we
can look back and say that 'On the Beach' is the movie that saved the world."

That look interesting. I always liked post-apocalypse stuff but there isn't
all that much of it in popular culture. Some people find it morbid apparently.

One of my fave TV shows when I was growing up was the BBC's Survivors. A
really grim tale about a plague that wipes out 99% of humanity and the
survivors have to rebuild some sort of life. Great stuff with loads of corrupt
characters, packs of rabid dogs and everyone looked really grubby and starving
all the time. But they sort themselves out eventually.

The BBC remade it recently and it was very good but they only made 12 episodes
and got bored with it, which was a shame as it was shaping up to be rather
good. It featured a new virus that, unlike the original, didn't just spare
white, middle-class, stage school types.

Probably a box set somewhere, worth a look.

Earth Abides is a fine post-apocalypse novel if you're looking for another one.

I've been thinking about creating a TV series or movie called "10 AC". AC
stands for "After Computers". Being the arts/tech field I've been watching the
trends and the research. The series would be about society 10 years after an
EMP blast from the Sun renders most electronic useless. Not an original idea
by any means but it would still be a functioning society just people are happy
to not be "connected" so much. Two films that explore this are "Rover" where
you see the technology but it no longer works and "Automata" where there is
limited technology like no cellphones but pagers.

Sometimes I wonder about EMPs though because I recall helping my dad install
insulation back in the 1960s and it was fiberglass with foil lining. When I
drilled a hole through the wall in this 60's vintage house it had some foil
particles. So the whole house might be one big Faraday cage. And that would
also explain why my phone signal is weak in the house and 4 bars outside.

I should explain that the BD players were Ethernet only and I've long had a
CAT 5 cable going into the living room. Chromecasts are wifi only.

Maybe "Survivors" would been better if they had stuck to 6 or 8 episodes.

It was two 6 episode series a year apart. I thought they could have made more
for each one actually but it's probably expensive and for such a narrow
audience. It was pretty grim and it's bound to end in tears which puts people
off. They had some good ideas though.

When network execs ask for 13 then showrunners have a problem and start
padding episodes or have ones that don't really contribute to the running
storyline. I note that "Best Call Saul" is only 10 episodes and Vince
Gilligan is one of the few showrunners who can keep things going for 13
episodes. I watched Episode "Uno" last night on VUDU and they have a deal on
it plus the best picture but I'm being a "terrible librul" by getting it from a
Walmart owned company.

I don't know what the BBC is up to but both Netflix and Amazon have announced
that BBC is going to stop supplying titles. Perhaps they're starting their
only online streaming service in the US. Just what we need, more subscription
services. :-(

Haven't heard anything about that but they are always being encouraged to find
new revenue streams as it's only a matter of time before some government breaks
it all up and Murdoch takes over everything and I throw my dumb TV in the bin
and try and remember how to read. Probably for the best in the end...

Maybe "Survivors" would been better if they had stuck to 6 or 8
episodes. When network execs ask for 13 then showrunners have a problem
and start padding episodes or have ones that don't really contribute to
the running storyline. I note that "Best Call Saul" is only 10
episodes and Vince Gilligan is one of the few showrunners who can keep
things going for 13 episodes. I watched Episode "Uno" last night on
VUDU and they have a deal on it plus the best picture but I'm being a
"terrible librul" by getting it from a Walmart owned company.

I don't know what the BBC is up to but both Netflix and Amazon have
announced that BBC is going to stop supplying titles. Perhaps they're
starting their only online streaming service in the US. Just what we
need, more subscription services. :-(

One of my fave TV shows when I was growing up was the BBC's
/Survivors/. A really grim tale about a plague that wipes out 99% of
humanity and the survivors have to rebuild some sort of life. Great
stuff with loads of corrupt characters, packs of rabid dogs and
everyone looked really grubby and starving all the time. But they sort
themselves out eventually.

The BBC remade it recently and it was very good but they only made 12
episodes and got bored with it, which was a shame as it was shaping up
to be rather good. It featured a new virus that, unlike the original,
didn't just spare white, middle-class, stage school types.

Probably a box set somewhere, worth a look.

/Earth Abides/ is a fine post-apocalypse novel if you're looking for
another one.

I've been thinking about creating a TV series or movie called "10
AC". AC stands for "After Computers". Being the arts/tech field I've
been watching the trends and the research. The series would be about
society 10 years after an EMP blast from the Sun renders most
electronic useless. Not an original idea by any means but it would
still be a functioning society just people are happy to not be
"connected" so much. Two films that explore this are "Rover" where
you see the technology but it no longer works and "Automata" where
there is limited technology like no cellphones but pagers.

Sometimes I wonder about EMPs though because I recall helping my dad
install insulation back in the 1960s and it was fiberglass with foil
lining. When I drilled a hole through the wall in this 60's vintage
house it had some foil particles. So the whole house might be one big
Faraday cage. And that would also explain why my phone signal is weak
in the house and 4 bars outside.

I should explain that the BD players were Ethernet only and I've long
had a CAT 5 cable going into the living room. Chromecasts are wifi only.

The technology race is because people need to find something that
makes money. Leads to all kinds of crazy things. But it was kinda
fun to hangout at Google a week ago. There was a row of Chevy Spark
vehicles parked right behind where I parked.

Speaking of EMP, how about that blast in the Ukraine the other day?

There are lots of post-apocalyptic stories, movies and TV series. And
many like this one seem to be fond of middle ages, horse and buggy
scenarios. "Rover" didn't do that as some things still worked. However
my scenario could also be from people just burning out on tech and
walking away from it. Not very likely given how mind controlled the
masses are.

I've got a Hi-Fi amp that uses valves made in Russia in the cold war. They
were specially designed to resist EMP's! So at least I'll have music, except

I didn't hear about any EMP in Ukraine, sounds sinister but maybe the least of
their worries if Uncle Sam arm's the government against Putin's rebels.

Another big threat to our electrical is solar flares. they can be powerful
enough to wreck satellites and computers on Earth. We haven't had a really big
flare up since we started relying on electricity, I think there was one that
knocked out the telegraph system 1890 or thereabouts. Think of the chaos of the
stock market went down! But at least we'd know it was coming these days.

money. Leads to all kinds of crazy things. But it was kinda fun to
hangout at Google a week ago. There was a row of Chevy Spark vehicles
parked right behind where I parked.

Speaking of EMP, how about that blast in the Ukraine the other day?
People are reporting their electronics were knocked out.

Seems we're waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Secondly, apps add about $200 to a TV. The dumb TV was a blow-out or
loss leader at the local electronics candy store but is a damn good
set for the price.

I've never felt the need for "apps" on a TV, or on a phone come to
think of it.

I've got a really dumb TV and plug a Panasonic PVR in to watch stuff.
The old ways suit me, too much technology these days. It's like they
do things because they can not because it's a good idea. Or maybe some
people love and expect this stuff?
