Maharishi himself said this. A reporter asked him how many followers he had
and he said, "None. Everyone follows his own experience."

And from what I've observed a movement sprung up around Ammachi she
didn't build it herself as Maharishi did. These organizations are good
for programs for the masses but not for one-on-one instruction.

True. My own anecdotal observation would be a guesstimate of over 50%
but possibly over even 80%.

I feel M.'s own characterization of himself not as the guru, but as a
doorkeeper to the tradition is an honest and poignant one--because
truly even if many did not remain with TM, he opened an important door
for a LOT of people. In that sense M. is a doorkeeper and a
world-catalyst.

Well I think that was always a problem, thus the dual sri's.

I think they are very similar, but in many ways (IMO) SSRS is more
compassionate and authentic. I look at both of them as just 'other
people on the path' not necessarily as enlightened--and indeed neither
has claimed such.

Since TM is not unique truly, in the ultimate sense it's manasika-japa
with a really nice checking routine; I know that many use, in essence,
the same method with similar or same results. IMO the major fault of TM
is that it does not fully address the obstacles individual seekers may
encounter. It also does not address those who may need to move beyond
mantra as a support or cannot work well with mantra period after a
certain point.

It's the individual that's important and that to the degree they can
simply observe and "be honest" with their own condition (body, energy
and mind-wise).

Sure. Never judge a man till you've walked a mile in his moccasins. None of
us could have accomplished what he did. But great accomplishments do not
absolve a man from being held accountable for his mistakes. People are still
talking about Nixon's mistakes AND accomplishments.

He is still younger than MMY was when he became famous. No telling what
he'll do. Amma is becoming more and more famous. 1/4 million people (or some
such number) from all over the world attended her 50th birthday celebration
a couple of years ago. Billy Graham is still getting interviewed on Larry
King. Is that any indication of his degree of enlightenment? No one outside
India ever heard of Guru Dev. Was that any indication of his? What does
Maharishi's behavior have to do with his fame (largely attributable to the
Beatles), and with his level of consciousness? So he made a big splash in
the late 60's through mid 70's and introduced us and many others to
meditation. We're all grateful for that. The world was ripe for such a thing
and if it hadn't been him it would have been another, but obviously it was
his role. I guess the point we're debating is "the others you
> mentioned are not in the same space, and can't be judged on their
> behavior when presented with the same issues, because they don't
> interact with the world on that level."

But I don't understand the point you're trying to make. Are you saying that
has fame excuses him from any mistakes he may have made?

Amma and SSRS are probably the biggest spiritual movements in India right
now. They both do much more charitable work than the TMO ever did (any
charitable work would be more). They're each going about it in their own
way. But regardless of that, having a big organization has no correlation
with whether or not one is enlightened. Behaving ethically and
compassionately may be more correlated, but who knows?

I don't claim to be able to discern the subtle influences of mantras, and of
course each individual would have his own
reaction/experience/interpretation, but when I switched, I noticed an
improvement. These days (a few years later) I transcend clearly in most
meditations and feel that I'm making wonderful progress on the spiritual
front, although mantra meditation isn't the only influence. I'm more
successful than ever business-wise (Never been a business hotshot but I'm
doing OK - plenty of clients), no one has died, etc. (allusion to OM in the
mantra).
