Re: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
I would think that any cat that collapsed after a blood draw would immediately get a transfusion as a matter of course. Perhaps I missed something coming in late to this topic though I have a huge 18 pound cat now, I'm seriously thinking of putting him on the emergency cat blood donor list for our local emergency clinic, he has the body weight needed to be a good strong donor. Re: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
Hi. With a hematocrit of 9.6, if you want the chance to treat her I think you need to get her a transfusion. That value is very low, and if it goes lower she will not make it. A transfusion can buy you days or weeks to get other treatments going. Tell your vet that several of the cats on this list serve who are FeLV+ and had hematocrits almost that low turned around with epogen. With a hematocrit that low she is close to losing the fight, so what could possibly be the downside of trying the Epogen? If she says they can get reactions to it, that is not usual and when it does happen it is normally months into the treatment and reverses when the treatment is stopped. At this point, I do not see what you have to lose. The other thing that has seemed to help is putting 800 micrograms of folic acid in the cat's food. And definitely, absolutely steroids-- preferably a pretty high dose of prednisone or dexamethasone to start. The combination of Epogen and a high dose of prednisone brought Belinda's Bailey from something like a hematocrit of 15 all the way up to 40. I would get her on Epogen right away, and steroids, and if your vet will not try it I would go to another vet, preferably a board-certified internist. An internist could probably also give you more idea what might be causing this, and if lymphoma is likely. Lymphoma can get other treatments. My Simon, when he had anemia, had his hematocrit go up from 11 to 30 pretty quickly from chemotherapy and steroids. He lived about 2 months, with some very good weeks, after that, then died of a hemolytic reaction that made his hematocrit plunge too quickly to have a response. Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2006 17:00:06 -0700 First thing is to determine what is causing the anemia, giving doxy even when hemobart isn't found is a good idea, hemo is VERY hard to detect and the doxy will almost always take care of it and won't hurt Chelsea if she doesn't have hemo but will save her life if she does. Blood transfusions, and epogen depending onwhat is causing the anemia can really help. Also vitamin B complex and folic acid are needed to build blood. Prednisolone can help if it is similar to what Bailey has.

Hi Amy, I sent you some info for hopeful placement ideas for the felv+ cats of dead owner. if you dont' receive it, let me know. or at least i hope i sent it correctly... barbara Lowe From: Amy Wilkins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: 2 FeLV+ Kittens Need Home - Please Read To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I'm writing about 2 male white kittens in Rochester, NY that desperately need a home. I just got a call from a woman about her son who died suddenly and unexpectedly. I don't know the details but I know he had 2 kittens that he loved dearly. He adopted them at 6 weeks old from our local humane society and a few weeks later they both tested positive for leukemia. He had fallen in love with them and decided to keep them, so they have been in a loving home since September. Now that the son has passed, the poor boys have no home. The family called about taking them to our humane society and they said they would euthanize them. The family is devastated and just wants to find a home for these 2 cats. I am pregnant and have lost my job because of being so sick and there is just no way I can add 2 more to my batch right now. I have been in bed sick for the past 18 weeks and can't even think about introducing 2 cats right now. I feel awful for this family and for these cats that are so sweet and full of life. I know it is a long shot but can anybody take them? I would help set up transport to get them to a new home. Amy Weygandt Woof Wagon www.woofwagon.com
Re: I'm back for a while again
Thanks guys, for the WB! My kitties are all doing well (I did have 6 housecats when I left, right? Miranda, Doobie, Tigger, Mythic, Bones, and Pinky?, plus one feralish guy I couldn't adopt out, Little Guy?). Things have changed since I left last time though! I'm now the happy caretaker of a mostly (75%) FIV+ group of feral cats. They are a colony from a cemetery in NJ that was being renovated, and the cats "had to go" so I took them to save them from euthanasia. Currently, I have 5 from that group, but 4 more will be coming up in a few weeks (I'm getting them as they are trapped, vetted, and brought up). I had 6, but one died already. I not sure what happened to her, but it's not unlikely that I would lose one or two from the stress of moving a colony. It's a BAD thing to do to ferals, and not recommended, but it was that or be killed, so I took the risk. Her name was Harmony, and she was a calico. There wasn't anything I could have done, of course, she was wild, and I didn't ever see her to know anything was wrong, I just found her dead on a shelf in their storage room (they can come and go as they like). The rest of them are all looking good and have settled in (and Little Guy is SO happy to have friends now!). I also have a new rescue name, I'm now called Little Cheetah Cat Rescue, and I re-did my website (I'm still not officially non-profit at this point). I have an adoption page now, etc. I have one rescue up for adoption now, his name is Zack, and he's an FIV+ boy, with pretty black spots on a grey ticked coat, about 5 years old (owner surrender). A real sweetie. I'm also getting a GREEK cat in at the end of the month or sometime next month, that was almost killed by being strangled with some wire. He got away though, and the wire grew into his neck, and had to be surgically removed (the wonderful vet donated his services, several hours of delicate surgery). Anyways, I'm trying to raise funds to get him to America, and once I do, I am sure with his sad story, he will be adopted quickly. He can't be turned back out to fend for himself after all he's been through, it just doesn't seem right to me (and he might get back into the hands of his abuser). You can see all my adoptables on my adoption page, in my sig. OH, and there's one aggressive feral in the colony that I really need to place as someone's outdoor cat (as the only outdoor cat), as he's mean to the others in the colony, so if anyone has room for a not too friendly orange and white male, he's FIV+, healthy, and all he needs is someone to feed him, put water out, and give him a doghouse or a crawlspace to get shelter in. His name is Rusty. He promises not to be much of a bother, and in return for a place to live he will keep all the rodents out of your house and yard! he's available to anyone in New England, or to anyone that can make the drive to pick him up. (pending an approved adoption application, of course) Ok, that's about everything on my end... what has been going on for you guys? No lack of email here, right? Anyways, my condolences to everyone that has lost a baby while I was away, and hi to any newbies that have joined in that period. I'm Jenn, but probably, I know, not the only one (I'm going to change my name, but am undecided on what to change it to at this point). If anyone in the North-eastern USA in the "New England" states has FELV+ or FIV+ cats up for adoption, I'd be happy to put them up on my NE adoption listing pages. I currently have one cat up for adoption here now, in rescue. He's a very sweet FIV+ boy, who gets along GREAT with kids and dogs, but has never seen another cat until he came here, and is just not so sure he cares for them (I think he thinks he's a dog). SO, if anyone in NE wants a GREAT FIV+ boy, healthy as can be, sweet, loving, even-tempered, good with kids and BIG dogs (his buddy was over 100lbs rotty/shepherd), send them my way. Re: "Slight" positive
Absolutely - that test has many more false positives than negatives, as I understand. Retest with an Elisa, somewhere else. Then if that's positive, do the out-of-office IFA. Different vet's a great idea... Gloria On Apr 15, 2006, at 7:02 PM, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Faulty test? Bad laboratory procedures? Could be any number of things, all the way from your vet got lab samples mixed up, to the testing kit was defective, to it's possible your breeder isn't god and can't control everything all the time, to maybe your breeder wasn't so reputable after all. OR, if your cat has ever been boarded or spent any time in a place other than your own home, she might have been infected there (highly unlikely unless you boarded her at a VERY nasty place where they let boarders interact). Anyways, there's lots of reasons HOW it COULD have happened, however unlikely. BUT, chances are, it's just a bad test result. Wait a month, go to a DIFFERENT vet (one that might have newer or a different batch of test kits). Then, if THAT comes back positive, have blood drawn and send off for an IFA, done at a large lab, not in house at the vet's office. Jenn
